Where Engage Has Three Houses Beat

  • There have been a plethora of videos about how Fire Emblem: Three Houses is better than Engage in every conceivable way. I love both games, but all's fair in anime chess war.
    I'm Emblem Moth, I create casual-friendly builds and examine games from the character angle, especially Fire Emblem Engage, Three Houses, and Three Hopes.

    You know, I didn't think about it before but you're right. One of my biggest frustrations on my first playthrough was that I could tell I was missing something with the characters I recruited because they'd make comments or do things with their opponents that completely misaligned with my understanding (Felix especially, since a lot of his VW supports are pretty jokey). And then when I'd see how their personality or dynamic is on another playthrough, I couldn't help but feel like I did the first one entirely wrong.
    Houses absolutely would have benefitted by spending more time on characters and having moments where we could see or really understand them more, especially outside of the lord and retainers.

    • @EmblemMoth
      @EmblemMoth  2 месяца назад +7

      Oh man Felix is a BIG victim of the mismatched supports. He has a few really good ones that lay out exactly who he is, and then a ton that go "you know he's super serious right? right? well here's a contrast!" when yeah... there's no way to know how serious a character he is if you recruit him out of Lions first thing. This is how I ended up having to redo the first half of my CF run after realizing the character I recruited would be miserable LOL

    The talk about the direction of the supports kind of reminded of how Marianne and Sylvain are handled.
    Starting with Marianne I'd argue that all of her supports aside from Hilda's are great at showing her character development as well as symbolism of her Crest which ties to the Devil Arcana. But the problem many people have is that certain supports make her character regress out of nowhere. It really feels like Marianne's supports were made in some kind of order in mind, where for example reading her Ignatz A support after other As might make her come as having her character development regress, especially if you watched her Byleth A which I'd say should be watched last (even though you're realistically going to get that one first) because this is the support where Marianne is at the end of her character's journey.
    As for Sylvain it's just honestly baffling to me how little focus Koei put on his character. Most of his supports end at B which in a lot of cases makes them feel insignificant or cut short prematurely. This also results in him having one of the lowest amounts of A supports in the game, add to that the fact that he has very low amount of screentime in actual story, hell Cyril has more screentime post-timeskip than Sylvain does and you have a character that feels underdeveloped and largely unexplored.
    This is really why I liked Engage for having less supports. It let IS stay focused with the themes that they wanted to convey with their characters as well as giving them more or less equal presence with all non-Alear base game characters having similar amount of supports which all end with A

    • @EmblemMoth
      @EmblemMoth  Месяц назад +2

      Yeah I feel like the mandatory "have a support with everyone in the house" made for a lot of fluff supports that didn't add anything to the character or made them seem like they were a different person. IIRC like half of Ingrid's in-house supports are about whether or not she likes makeup, when she has the potential to be a very complicated character. Sylvain is one of my all-time faves and yeah you really have to dig to figure out what makes him tick, for a character presented so badly outright, you have to WANT to see him in good faith to ever get a good view of him.

      really disagree with your take on Sylvain support(and b support), him only having a lot of B actually help show that while he have plenty of connection with people(in 3house he have the most amount of support before bernadetta got another 1 from dlc) they're all shallow and he only let a selected few to know his 'real' side, it's a subtle way to show his personality and a mechanic I would like to come back

    I must say that’s a pretty good video and you raise very interesting points. Personally I felt pretty much the same : Engage’s character introduction are very good at showing all the different traits of the characters : the same thing could be said about Alcryst and Ivy. In Alcryst we can see his protectiveness + his low self and esteem at work and Ivy, how she hides behind a mask, an essential part of her character and of Elusia

    • @EmblemMoth
      @EmblemMoth  Месяц назад +3

      Oh for sure, Alcryst also benefits hugely from the injury over permadeath feature because him being the only one who challenges Ivy's inclusion says a lot about himself and Diamant both. And Hortensia is the kind of character I'd 100% have written off if she hadn't had some really incredible main story scenes before ever being recruited.

    I kinda wish people start liking engage in the same way as fates conquest after the engage discourse content milking. Seriously most of video essays are so dishonest picking at the most low hanging fruit things possible for views. Usually just side stepping the gameplay talk and nit-picking early game character support without the context of the mid game to late game ones.

  • @NetherTamer

    Honestly, I couldn't agree more with the character introductions. Three Houses took forever to find out basic information about characters, a big example for me is Raphael, who I only found out had a little sister after playing all three routes and playing a route in three hopes. Sure, a few of his supports mention her but I feel like it should've been one of the first things mentioned and would've made me care more for his character at the start. Engage gives you the basics of each character and allows you to decide which one you want to see more of which I like, an example for me is Citrinne, who didn't take long whatsoever to show that she was out of touch with how common folk treated normal things like presents.
    However, overall I found myself liking and caring for Three Houses' characters a lot more, even after just one playthrough (which for me was Silver Snow) I was invested in characters like Ferdinand and Bernadetta. Whereas in Engage I only fully cared for a few characters like Rosado and Ivy. This may be because I put more time into the three houses supports but at the same time, Engage's early supports were pretty bad (imo) and so they never made me want to go further with them outside a few characters.

    • @EmblemMoth
      @EmblemMoth  Месяц назад +2

      Yeah a lot of the "non-main" house characters are the biggest victims of this, it kills me! There's a ton of favoritism in 3H's character focus, which isn't bad on its own but definitely exacerbates the 8 characters introduced together issue.
      Engage also does have the flaw of the Fell Xenologue DLC being REALLY good and saying a lot about the characters, when some of that additional depth could've been better served finding a way into the main story.

    I don't know if 3H does this, and you won't have seen it in-game yourself since you say you play without permadeath, but one thing I really like about Engage from a story or characterization perspective is that it acknowledges when you lose characters in the exploration sections after each map. If you field both Chloe and Louis, for example, and lose one of them, the other will have dialogue about it. This is also true for Pandreo and Panette, so it isn't limited to retainer characters who both serve the same lord.

    As for who would get along, don't let Yunaka and Claude in the same room, that either ends wonderfully or terribly. I think Seteth and Vander or Mauvier would be good friends! Vander probably more so, but I think Seteth would respect Mauvier for trying to make up for his past actions. And I absolutely think Hilda and Rosado would get along (maybe Hortensia too, but I admit I didn't unlock many of her supports, so idk her that well), and cinnamon rolls Veyle and Flayn would probably make quick friends! I honestly liked both games very much. From characters you like to characters thwt annoy you but you want to do all of their supports.Three Houses was my first ever game on the switch, and I especially loved the romance part ( and I don't choose just one character to romance in one playthrough ( I make multiple saves for one house for before the final fight for the game, where we get to choose who we give the ring to in the end of the game ). Then, I do a new game+ and the whole thing over with a new house. That's just how I am, I gotta get all endings possible for the current route. Even did the same for the new characters from the Cindered Shadows DLC ( still couldn't beat Alefric to this day ( need help ) as well as the Xenolouge DLC from Engage ( was halfway through with the dlc, but was having trouble with getting my Alear out ( I named her Cassie, after me ( I didn't have Celica's ring at that point of time in the main game since I was close to before my character finding out about her true parentage ) and I might need help with that boss battle as well. Anyway, I love both games very much! Especially since Clanne's english voice actor is the voice actor for Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia! Though, I do hear/read that some of Engage's romances aren't as good as other companions from the same game. Some are more platonic than others. Which kinda stinks ( I know why for Velye ), but still! I don't really know, I haven't finished the game yet ( I don't really mind spoilers at all, but if you want to be respectful to others, then please use the #spoiler). Sorry for such a long comment!

    I am one of the people who would vouch 3Houses supports over Engage's because of how much variety you can get in 3Houses if you really go looking for it. One of my favorite support chains of a character I am not a huge fan of because how she is flanderized by her severe persecution complex and trauma is Bernadetta's support with Alois. It can definitely be frustrating for people to find some supports that really shine through the other supports that are like: someone talks to Bernie. Bernie gets scared and panics. Bernie runs away in fear. Rinse and repeat. And I agree that characters in routes out of their house don't really gel as well, with the exception of Mercedes. But one thing that a majority of Engage's supports suffered for me was that their main structure is overreliant on the anime trope each character represented. However, there is one support which comes to mind with Alcryst and his brother that makes my blood boil. Instead of showing that there is something Alcryst can do better, it paints Diamant as capable of being better even at the weapon Alcryst excels in.
    As much as I don't like Engage's story, Chapter 10 and 11 did the greatest service towards the Brodian siblings while doing the biggest disservice to Alear as a character by making them act excruciatingly optimistic and nonchalant about the situation they brought everyone in. And frankly this was where the game had potential and squandered it with Solm and the infamous "doodad drawer". I will admit that the permadeath was not handled the best in Houses as cutscenes, where your in-house units had died, were very awkward to look at as they felt incomplete. Engage dealt with that better by keeping the Royals alive in that regard even if they fell in battle.
    While I don't completely agree with the points you raised, I can acknowledge there are some areas where Engage handled itself better. Plus, despite my comment on my indifference on the supports, some supports really hit a home run, such as all of Mauvier's supports, Alcryst and Celine, and Zelkov and Yunaka to name a few. I just prefer the format of Three Houses a bit more, but I would lie if I said there are no absolute stinker supports in Three Houses or that some felt samey or ludicrous in concept.
    But yeah, both have their pluses and minuses and thrive in their own merits while plummeting from their own negatives. It's a matter of perspective and what you like more in writing style.

    While Three Houses is my favorite game of all time, I really cannot justify TWSITD, unit intros, and the some of the plot inconsistencies / unfinished areas. I don’t personally have an issue about Three Houses’ “zero to hero” progression with units or the sheer amount of units and supports. I believe that the devs tried to build these mechanics around the idea of multiple playthroughs to piece together the whole story, and I personally loved the the writing of most supports. Despite this, it did hurt some of the immediate characterization you would otherwise get from units like Pandreo. Both games are great in their own right, but Engage’s cast just felt like a bit of a shock coming off of how serious Three Houses could get, which hurt first impressions of the characters. There’s nothing wrong with the levity or the more simple story, for me it just got really cheesy in some areas like the “I am the Fire Emblem” scene, or with the all the silly C supports.

    Supports are not story they are world building. There is overlap but good world building enhances the story by giving context to the actions of characters and places but are not necessary to understand the story itself. If the audience needs to know the information for the plot to make since then it becomes story and needs to be put in a place where the audience is guaranteed to see it so the audience can understand what’s happening in the plot. Supports are not necessary to understand what is happening in the plot they can however help explain how characters react to what is happening in the plot, therefore they are world building not story.
    As for the character intro’s. You are not defending the story your defending the map design and and game play. Forcing a unit/ability deployment on a map that shows off how the unit/ability is best used is a common strategy game teaching method it does not flesh out the story. Being forced to use a character you find out is a crit machine does not further the plot. It might get you more invested in them as a character, but if that character is not relevant to the story, as it’s being told, the author can’t really use that emotional investment in that character to get you to care about what’s actually happening in the plot.
    Spoilers
    I felt more emotion at Jerlt’s death than I did in the entirety of engages plot twists and character deaths. Demitri’s arc in house was similar. Engages story was hollow and childishly predictable, while 3h is rich with emotional and cathartic moments.
    Let’s compare and contrast I went in to both games blind. Veil and Alear’s familial bond are Veil’s mind control I called instantly at their meeting and her first mention of waking up in unusual places. You want to know what I did not call the identity of the flame emperor or their relationship to Dimitri. How about we compare the emotions felt when both of the mc parents died. I saw both of these deaths coming but I straight up laughed and Alear’s mom’s death while a got misty eyed and Jerlt’s death.

    I’m not sure how anyone can believe that not only is Engage better written holistically compared to Three Houses, but better than the “older games”, those being every single game in the series as Engage is the newest.
    I would say that’s unfair to you, but the term “old fire emblem” can refer to the first 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, and “any that isn’t the current game” depending on who you’re talking to.
    Like, every single critique you’ve seen? All of them?
    Three houses has better worldbuilding, better stakes, a more emotionally compelling narrative, better pacing in the cutscenes despite engage being better polished, and the characters are more developed. On top of that, the ost for 3H is better, and while Engage looks FAR better, the artstyle is considered worse by most people, although I think they’re both bad personally. Not even the defense that engage’s story is “not meant to be taken seriously” fits as Engage desperately tries to be serious and it just simply wasn’t taken seriously.
    For your 3 main points, I do genuinely agree with your first and partially for your second. Although the 2nd is only arguing against 3 Houses and not for Engage as 3H was the outlier in those regards, but even then it’s not like that point holds any water in 3H itself. Why would you need an introductory chapter for the gameplay of each unit when the whole point of 3 Houses was that you could make any unit anything? (except for gender locked classes, which returned for some reason) and for your 3rd point…
    Why should supports be signaled at all?? Both Engage and 3H have too many supports to see in 1 playthrough. At least 3H has 4 routes to justify seeing the other supports. Engage’s characters are barely characters besides arguably Hortensia but why would you need to signal supports at all when both games could’ve just… had less supports? We don’t need a Macbeth’s worth of Lorenz dialogue.
    Also, 3H does a fine job signaling supports. First off, the game literally separates units into 4 distinct groups, and the game constantly reminds you of how the characters connect to one another. Dimitri and Dedue are extremely close. Dimitri, Felix, Sylvain, and Ingrid were childhood friends. Felix constantly complains about Dimitri now.
    Linhardt and Caspar are often bouncing off eachother, Hilda and Marianne too. Catherine and Shamir are framed together and even have a sidequest mechanically framing the 2 as friendly rivals
    You went out of the way to find a hidden gem for 3H’s supports and pretending it was a writing mistake when supports have been the most well telegraphed in 3H since arguably Path of Radiance, if not ever.
    Engage’s characters were also written to die, 99% of fire emblem characters are. They just have less dialogue to feel out of place in. Engage having introductory chapters is nothing new and 3H not having them doesn’t matter as it wouldn’t fit the gameplay.
    And engage signaling supports better doesn’t really matter as 3H’s structure inevitably leads you to seeing more supports, as well as having better written supports on average.
    I struggle believing anyone can prefer Engage’s writing over 3H unless they really hate silent self-insert avatars but love regular self-insert avatars, think that morally grey characters in a game with split campaigns is somehow bad writing, or is just trying to go against the grain.
    People keep saying 3H and some of the older games have better stories because they do. No hate but the defenses you made are either inapplicable or shallow at best.
    Here’s hoping the FE4 remake comes out soon so all of us stop talking about both of these games and inevitably get into arguments about it instead

      @@FairyAngelBel How am I disingenuous? How is what I said untruthful? What you brought up is literally just an opinion I said. This video unnecessarily condescending and a little bit disingenuous itself, although I'd chock that up to poor examples given and not trying to lie. You just agree with it, I imagine. If you believe I'm wrong, address my arguments and not my tone.
      The most you could say is that I treated my opinions on subjective media quality as facts, but this video does the same thing, and most people do that in general... It's just how people talk. If you want to disagree with my points, go ahead, I'm open to it. I want to understand why people think Engage's writing is not just good, but better than both 3 Houses and most FE games in general. Otherwise, why even write this comment?
      "you're wrong because you're mean for asking why people like something you don't think is good" even though the person I'm responding to is also doing the same thing but from the defensive point of view? Like, no, its fine. I'm not hurting the creator's feelings, and if I did I'd probably feel bad, but then I'm not sure why they made such a evocative and argumentative video in the first place without being able to take similarly framed counterarguments.

      @@foggy8298 i am specifically referring to the bit where you said « I have problem believing you like Engage’s writing over 3H’s unless you dislike Byleth, morally grey characters or is a contrarian »
      That is incredibly disingenuous and unnecessary.
      This is the equivalent of saying « you only like 3H because you only played 3H or it was your first game »
      I didn’t wait until Engage came out to dislike 3H’s writing and find it too flawed to my taste.
      If you want a genuine answer : Engage’s simplier plot makes it more focused and cohesive than 3H who is much too ambitious for its own good.

      @@FairyAngelBel I looked at your channel and you seem to be much more attached to this game than even the creator of this video so I'm sorry if you personally felt like my comment was being too dismissive.
      I'm matching the tone of the creator of this video going "I just stopped listening to their arguments because they're literally all wrong" yknow
      I stand by what I said but what I said was genuine, not pointless insults. I don't really understand the appeal in Engage's characters or story and I don't comprehend the arguments made in favor of it, especially in comparison to many of the fire emblem games that came before
      I would be willing to listen, but this video does a poor job in both arguing against 3 Houses, as well as arguing for Engage imo.

      @@zaicotec1 exactly what you said. Engage feels like a diluted and overly simplistic more commercial entry point for new FE players who know nothing about the series or have no attachment or commitment in learning how to play. It’s simple and very easy to just jump in. I think 3H feels more immersive. The gameplay, characters, story, everything gets too complex but that’s the beauty and for a FE fan, we appreciate discovering such a rich world. So I understand how maybe 3H doesn’t seem so appealing for so many people. But only those willing to get invested.just to understand the whole story you need to ply the game 4 times. That’s a lot and honestly I’d only do it for very few titles. I didn’t even do it for 3H. I poured around 2,000 hours into the game completing it as much as I could, getting every support, high ranks, skills, but only played base 3 routes, never got to Silver Snow (church route) and still I’m wanting to go back and play it so eagerly. I got so engaged with my students and can’t wait to see them in battle again and create my team from the beginning. As far as Engage goes, it feels too linear. Second time I played it it just felt like a harder difficulty, but more optimized route than the first time. But everything was exactly the same, just better exp investment, resource distribution, character dedication, I already knew who was good and how to get them going, emblems, weapons, etc they need to be efficient, and who was a bad unit to avoid them at all cost. I found it too superficial, limited and not as customizable. It’s hard not to use Pegasus knight knight and levin sword mounted Anna since they’re so good, sustainable, low maintenance, and you get them right away. As for 3H you have so many options on each route. SO MANY. And honestly, anyone is viable since customization is so easy to do. Last thing, as a completionist, there’s something so annoying about the Engage limited resources. Money is so scarce and SP is SOOOOO hard to get. You can barely unlock a really good skill and a bunch of kinda good ones for each character unless you super train them. I wish there was a NG+ where you could keep some levels or investments from previous play through. It’s just too slow, annoying and impossible to get a sense of fully completing the game or getting fully optimized units before the final map. Hope that makes sense. Not saying Engage is bad. In fact, I agree so much with this video. Engage is great at A LOT, I just would never play it again. What do you think after that? Would love to hear from you now! :)

    One thing I'd have brought up kyself is that Alear is voiced. I personally really don't care for Alear (shocking, I know) but I'll take a bland or even an unlikable character anytime over the vacuum that is Byleth. Having Byleth be silent in 3H was such a bizzare decision to me and the game suffers so much for it.

    • @EmblemMoth
      @EmblemMoth  Месяц назад +2

      That's so fair, I do get that a lot of people don't like Byleth as a result, I'm just a big Byleth fan and think that working within the silent protagonist constraints they did a good job letting Byleth be a little weirdo LOL. I like Alear a lot too but I think the games that have come out including Byleth since (Hopes AND Engage) have shown that Byleth had a well-defined character even without putting words to it.

    I've never really understood where the praise for Engage's battle-system comes from. Break alone made every battle feel like a massive chore, and while yes, I probably shouldn't leave units in range of enemies with weapon triangle advantage, all break really did was slow everything down as I either had more enemies to kill next Player Phase, or moved more slowly through the map to avoid being broken, while being able to break enemies in turn rarely ever came into use. Meanwhile, the level-scaling on skirmishes felt unfairly punishing, especially when supports build so immensely slowly, making it difficult to actually _learn_ more about the characters I'm using. Sure, you got meals and Somniel activities, but even then, the supports are still slow, especially compared to Three Houses, which gives you several weeks of downtime, more acitivities per day, _and_ has those activities actively contribute to helping build your units' skills and abilities. The Emblem Rings as well just felt like a mechanic I'd rather do without, especially since anyone who isn't wearing a ring -- especially common after a certain chapter strips you down to your skivvies -- _always_ feels like they're going to be weaker than the enemies. Especially true for the early-game units who join with very little SP to build skills, compared to middle-game juggernauts like Kagetsu and Pandreo who seem custom-built just to replace the units you've already poured investment into, down to having a significantly larger starting SP pool. Keeping class-diversity isn't much better, since just about anyone can still become a Wyvern Lord like Three Houses, except for the unneccessarily grindy aspects of Engage holding everyone back by how much SP they have, or Sommie turds the player has, making it harder to even _build_ them for certain classes besides their own.
    Three Houses wasn't perfect, but at least it wasn't as tedious as Engage or its battle-system was for me, which isn't to mention the issue with writing, especially in the character-department, where the characters are one of Fire Emblem's biggest selling points.
