It's just pure 100% good vibes and I freaking love it, was stuck in my head for days when I listened to it for the 2nd or so time. So damn catchy
It’s the best track on the album
I don't really understand his gripe about it sounding like an extended dance mix for a 12'' vinyl record. It's a great groove that takes you on a wild trip. I've definitely had some fun zoning out to it and losing my sense of time. I wish Kevin did more with the outro actually, like at his Tiny Desk home concert.
Best track on the album for me by far. Sometimes when it stretches past the 3 minute mark, I’ll just restart it because that bass groove is like ecstasy for my ears

Genuinely baffled how you could call any of this album's production "muddy" over and over again.
The production is incredible.
I know this is late, but "muddy" is a subjective impression of a production choice that neither good nor bad. Good production CAN be muddy.
He likes more gritty productions like death grips
I call it FAT TONES.
He's not comparing it to you he is comparing it to what it could be, which whatever perfect is, would be very difficult to get. The production is washed/muddy, that does not mean it is not incredible production, it was what kevin chose, sh*t tons of phase and stereo delay, you'd think someone with a music tag would get that lol

An 8-minute rant about how you wanna surgically implant Kevin Parker's hair onto your bald head isn't a review, Anthony.
Last time I checked Anthony wasn’t the final say of what’s good or not. Chill bro 😂

this album is great. Some of y’all need to let it breathe a bit before judging it so harshly. I came into thinking no way it’ll beat Currents. gave it a couple listens and now I can’t stop playing it. It’s a solid piece of work.
Agreed!
Expectations were too high but it’s to be expected since it was almost 5 years and the previous 3 were so consistently good
yes
My thoughts exactly. Only thing correct in the reveiw is that on track is an absolute belter. Reminds me how no-one talks about The Moment off Currents, but both are amazing pieces on respective albums
It took me like a year almost. I love this album now. Honestly.
Actually this album is a grower. I felt pretty meh about it when it came out, but it grew on me in the last 2 months when I gave it a chance again. Honestly one of my favorite albums in indie this year
i could not agree more
Agreed, although I wouldn't call it indie. Definitely some kind of alternative pop tho
Tame Impala isn't Indie
bruh said indie💀 gtfo
“I don’t expect people to be on the journey with me the whole way. I expect people to get on the train and get off the next station. It sounds like I don’t care about my fans, but in a way, I’d be slightly disappointed if everyone that liked the first album liked every album after that. It’s one of those things that just has to happen. I think it was Marilyn Manson that said, ‘I don’t make albums for my fans. I make them for a new audience.’” - Kevin Parker
That kinda makes me feel better about not liking this and currents as much as the first two.
Yeah, that quote basically sums up why I respect this album even if it's not really a sound I'm that into. While Kevin has moved on somewhat from the kind of music I prefer, I still respect him as an artist and get what he's doing.
And that new audience is mainstream.. Not attacking, just pointing out the obvious.
So basically admitting to pandering. Gotcha, no wonder it was shit.
a really PC way of saying he sold out.
I understand that Kevin is Australian but I don't think your jokes about "this album being a bushfire" were really necessary.
He apparently actually lost most of his gear when an airbnb he was in burned down as a result of the fires
@@coversine479 ok

Anthony-I’ve bought over 100 ridge wallets. Please release my family; I’d like to see them again.
6/10 because Kevin didn’t have a song about Ridge Wallets huh??

Lonerism: the perfect daytime album
Currents: the perfect night album
woah
never thought about it like this but it's so true
magiccoupons idk slow rush i kinda like bumping daily during the day
it's the opposite tbh. Lonerism ends with "sun's coming up now I guess it's over" while Currents opens up with "I can hear an alarm, must be morning"
Saska gorty true but I’m talking about sonically not lyrically. If you listen to the albums you can tell a difference in atmosphere and the album covers define their sound too (Lonerism being daytime in Luxembourg gardens or wherever and Currents being dark purple outer space kinda vibe)
Slow Rush: The perfect unconscious album
I don’t think I’ve respectfully disagreed with a review more.

@@AnActualYeti in my opinion these album needs to bee listening more then ones to understand the genius of it!
@@linusspielberger6775 yes, seriously. The album as a while grew on me over time the more I listened to it
@Suz Cruz Yes I agree. He's a critic. so he's entitled to have an opinion that may differ without calling him names. People are so childish. Fantano is simply doing what he does. And that's why we're all here. In droves. Because we all want to know what he thinks. We want his opinion. Done.
"feed the whole god damn thing through a phaser" is step 1 in the Tame Impala instruction manual.
roryhensen
Well, you definitely forgot about the songwriting and arrangements.
Trillion tons of flanger and other effects are not enough to like a track, if melodically it’s really bland and mediocre.
In the previous records (especially Lonerism) it was always about the right balance. You can take away the effects and you’ll have great tunes anyway.
The album is fine though, just not as good as previous albums
He uses a flanger way more than he uses a phaser but ok
😂😂😂
tincho ...uh that’s literally what an album is supposed to do...
On a real, i think Anthony rushed this review, at least thats what it feels like. When i first listened to the Album i wasn't very impressed but after the first listen i couldn't get certain melodies, drums and lyrics out of my head, i found myself constantly coming back to this album and i have come to really like it. Definitely a grower type of album. 8/10 from me.
To be honest after a couple of listen, i completely fell in love with the record. From start to finish.
No, his experience was personal to him and he gave us his thoughts of it. How did he "rush" the review? He gives albums lots of listens ya know.
@@nootnootmyboot10 I get what you mean but Tame Impala's music is music that grows on you the more you listen and i think if Fantano made this video a week later he would've enjoyed this album more, i don't think he gave it enough time for it to grow on him. Maybe it didn't grow on him but most people who listen to Tame Impala would agree with what i said.
@@AntRounis You literally don't know if he would like it more since it is a personal experience to him. He gave it enough listens, I mean he listens to albums for a living, so I pretty sure he made up his mind.
@@nootnootmyboot10 Dude i get it, but what im saying is that if he waited longer he COULD HAVE liked the album more, just like i and many others did. I thought the album was very average at first but a few weeks after it's release i thought it was amazing because it grew on me.
I think melon missed the part of the Glimmer banter where he said "no, not really" about cranking the bass and kick up... He was making the opposite point 🤔
Also it's from a podcast, not the studio
Yeah that pissed me off lmao
Like bruh did you listen to the album once? How'd you not catch that?
I think it's important to recognise that he's saying the production is guilty of employing that philosophy. While he clearly missed that the people in the audio were making fun of that sentiment, it really doesn't have any bearing on his opinion. Really we're just talkin the difference between him saying "You said this is good but you did it and it's bad" and him saying "You guys said this is bad and yet you did it anyway". Hopefully that makes sense.
@@juseteam I def get that too
@@Radioactive_exe it is a little odd, I don't see how you hear that twice and still mishear it but whatever, its a small detail, and besides too much bass isn't the album's core problem IMO, just starts to sound a lil samey, regardless of if the track is decent or not. I'm sure by now Melon knows what was being said and it doesn't really change all that much
"On Track" also hit it hard with me as well, when the snare finally comes in midway through the song I couldn't stop myself from smiling. Easily best track. Also, during the phone conversation at the beginning of Glimmer, the words "nah not really" are clearly audible at the end which means turning up the bass and kick drum is not the way Anthony!
Edit:
Thanks for the replies everyone, didn't expect this kind of response. Side note if you're not enjoying the new stuff as much I just discovered the Dee Dee Dums and Tame Impala's unreleased tracks. A quick search on youtube will net a lot of new song listening time. I've always been into their Psych Blues Rock side more anyways
On track struck a chord with me the most too with both the instrumental and message. Drums are sick on that track.

ya he did the same with Donald Glover's latest album as well... I bet one of his speaker connections is mouldy or something, because I don't know what he's hearing.
do you really think a big-name music critic wouldn't be so meticulous in making sure they have the best music listening equipment lol, it's how he's effectively critical in the first place cause he doesn't have to listen to an album 50 fucking times because the speakers he uses are dogshit

@@lnlonelyness6021 I can’t agree with this
This is so true. Most artists today mix and engineer sounds for headphones and sound channels. This dude listens on speakers and vinyl-players as far as I know. So, it's obvious he doesn't understand it's intricacies.
Okay honestly TSR isn't anything _too_ special compared to Kevin's other work imo, but I was shocked to see Tomorrow's Dust as your worst track. Damn...
I personally think Tomorrow's Dust is one of the most pleasing song on the album
It was a major letdown in my opinion. I loved the instrumentals when he teased them on the preview, and I honestly thought that it would be my favorite game impala song when it released, but Kevin’s vocals just weren’t good on this track and it kinda ruined it
I loved that track, is my favourite I think, is the one that resembles the most to the Innerspeaker era to my ears.
i don’t even remember what it sounds like
To be fair, it's his "least favorite", and there's a pretty considerable difference between that and "worst"
I watch Anthony Fantano because I enjoy hearing his takes, despite the fact that I tend to disagree a lot, but people seem to put way too much damn stock into his opinion. The dude gave Currents, probably my favorite Tame Impala album, a seven when I thought it was a nine....doesn't mean the dude is right and doesn't mean I'm pissed because he didn't agree with me.
chicken stock and beef stock are good but Anthony is only able to do vegetable stock cuz of his head
thegoodbrother246 most people understand that most of the time, it’s not okay tho when he states his opinions as facts when they aren’t, for example in some videos he’ll say things like “if you think that [insert opinion here] you’re obviously just [insert unnecessary insult here]
travis la flame that's not the only problem. I'm surprised that he actually went into the lyrics this time around, he doesn't always do that, which makes for incomplete reviews. But most importantly, he tends to compare the album he's reviewing to older records only because those records were made by a band that he's more familiar with. It's like as soon as he notices some similarities, he just goes like "nah, that other band did it better" right away, even when it's not true. It makes me wonder if he thought that listening to the album a couple more times would have been a waste of his time, only because he knows similar artists. Case in point, he said that The Slow Rush gets repetitive, and it is no MGMT. Dude...Little Dark Age starts off with two good songs, and then it gets repetitive as well, especially in the second half...
Depends on how you see it.
For example Currents could be a 9 in comparison to the other Tame Impala albums but if you compare it with other albums like RAM from Daft Punk that got an 8,7 makes perfectly scence.
And you might think that 8 is low for an album like RAM and it should be a 10(so then it would make again scence to give Currents a 9) but 8 sound right if you think that 10 have only legendary albums like LZIV and DSOTM.
thegoodbrother246 And it doesn’t mean you’re right either, forgot to mention that one as well

In the lyrics for the podcast soundbite in Glimmer, the guy says 'It's like nah, not really'. I respectfully disagree with this review, but c'mon man you gotta look at the lyrics whilst you listen to each song.
I agree as a reviewer you should look at the lyrics at some point during your listening, possibly a second listen through. for me, the slow rush is nearly a masterpiece. even though kevin has some obvious lyrical weaknesses, the songs are so personal and you can tell these songs mean so much. the album is so meticulously crafted and has so much attention to detail. every breath on this album is placed at exactly the right spot and the production is absurd. every song was a journey for me. tsr feels like kevin's magnum opus so far. he knows exactly what he needs to do in everything he creates and does everything possible to make sure every song is perfect. i'd give it a 9/10
I feel the same! I feel like this album slightly holds over currents for me just because every song just slows into the next, it makes me want to listen to it from start to finish. It plays around the concept of time and I feel like I get a better sense of Kevin’s life through this album. A+ for consistent storytelling and A+ for the amazing production
I love Tame Impala but I am slightly disappointed. Overall I find it unexciting, and maybe a bit too clinical and unadventurous. This being said the album does have some serious strong points, just not as mind-blowing as Lonerism or as addictive as Currents.
Yes, yes. Thank you. Also look into the lyrics these are actually some of his best, his lyrics have grown more personal and catchy
Bruh y’all haven’t heard a masterpiece in your life huh
@@ianprescott7924 Music is subjective?
Dude lost me at “I’m glad patience didn’t make the album” bruhhhhhhh
Patience would have fit perfectly with the themes and made more sense on this album than Glimmer
I feel you on this. I was actually shocked Kevin left out that. Although I've always kinda felt Patience belonged on a different TI record honestly... didn't feel like sonically it belonged on THIS record.
Got the album. Couldn't find Patience. Came as a total surprise.
Glimmer is a transitional piece kind of like Nangs. Still wish patience ended up on the record, maybe it will happen on the B side.
@@WWIflyingace62 I mean you could always just add patience to the album tracklist if you own the files electronically

Melon called "Is It True" "It Is True" in case you needed an idea of how little he probably actually listened to this record. I mean come on, it's the main line in the chorus (which is catchy af).
vaguely listened and straight away listed 1547 flaws. typical critic

He's never been a huge fan of Tame Impala and didn't exactly have a glowing review of Currents so this isn't really that surprising tbh.
As someone who really liked currents i agreed with pretty much all of melon's criticisms here... appreciated the sadder more personal themes but aside from that and a few highlights the album just felt underwhelming imo
Innerspeaker and Lonerism are two of my favorite albums ever, Currents and Slow Rush simply do not compare.
Agree with Number 9, Currents is my favourite of Kevin’s (I can respect the critical acclaim for Lonerism but I just enjoy currents more) but I thought The Slow Rush was a bit disappointing
He gave currents a 7. What are you going on about?
bentley230 concur
Damn I really thought this would have gotten at least an 8
Why lmao
It's not even that good lol
a bit disappointing tbh don’t get me wrong it’s a good album but not worth waiting 5 years tbh :/
Really? I was definitely expecting something like this. I was disappointed at first too, although I will admit this album has already grown on me a lot.
youcantcme2 Yeah, and if it was amazing you’d probably be saying that the album is overrated af 🤦🏻♂️
Confirmed: Melon is jealous of Kevin's majestic long hair.

no longer voting for Bernie after this review, melon.

What was the point of it? I know Kevin added it in because he liked the way they were talking
What was the point?
Enlighten us then?
@@terrysilvester4720 have you even heard what they said? they were joking about boosting the bass to make the kick and bass sound better... not really.
The album is about more than texture and genre. I'm sure when Kevin was making it he wasn't concerned with making the craziest psych record ever. He takes a theme and explores it thoroughly and creates a few parallels from front to back. Wouldn't call that redundant.
yea no part of it is redundant, especially when comparing to many HipHop albums melon has ranked higher. His legitimate goal is glorifying “underground” albums and tearing down stuff that is in any way “mainstream” or “popular with fans”. At some point you’ve gotta realize that this is a lyrical, instrumental masterpiece.
6 is the age of my daughter. The daughter you kidnapped. Give her back antknee!
I’ve concluded that every time an album receives a score of 6, it is actually a masterpiece.
Case in point, MGMT's self-titled. What a godly album.
Absolutely!
Today is the second birthday of this album. This album is a hell of grower. I was kinda underwhelmed at first when I heard it two years ago, But now it's one of my favorite albums of all time. One of the reasons it ages so well for me is the concept itself being about the passage of time and all. Everytime you listen to it, it makes you look back at your life and everything that has happened since it came out and it just makes the lyrics hit so much harder than they rightfully should. And One More Hour is the perfect ending and it just elevates the whole thing to a new emotional level.
I really loved the album when it came out, I was really getting into Tame Impala and it was a dark time for me and all of us. Two years later, I still love Breathe Deeper, Instant Destiny, Is It True, and Glimmer. Many of the other tracks I find good, but they don’t hit like they did back in 2020 for me. This album still has good memories for me and it always will
So you only like it cuz of its concept
Two and a half years later and I'm still incredibly underwhelmed.
Yes I'm Changing and New Person Same Old Mistakes have the same message as the album and still hit infinitely harder after all those years.
The disgust in his voice when he said ‘disco influenced’ 😤
Kevin sure did love The Beegees.
I noticed that too. Helps put in perspective why he doesn’t like Patience and tsr
Zachariah You could say Glimmer is a perfect 80s house sound. He’s missing the difference between that and disco.
Love the different vibes all the songs give off
I'm not sure how you heard that audio snippet from Glimmer and didn't realize it was a joke at 6:15.
"It's like, 'Oh, bass. Cool. You know how you make the bass better? Crank the bass up. You know how to make the kick drum better? Just crank the bass up.' And it's like, 'No, not really.'"
Also, I was hoping to hear your thoughts on the new mix for Borderline on the album since it underwent some pretty significant changes and I know the mixing was part of your issue with the single version.
I think he just skipped Borderline while listening to the whole album since he had already listened to the single version.
He completely missed the point of On Track.. thought it was about getting up and dusting yourself off after bad things happen? It’s obviously about convincing yourself that your life and where you are in life is on track. Also thought the beginning of glimmer was serious? He wanted to give it a shitty review and it’s obvious he listened to it once or twice tops

Songwriting underneath is so so on this record IMO
Almost every detail of the songs was perfect, but the songs themselves weren't
He said in interviews he had to rush (no pun intended) to get the album out because he only spent a few months working on it
I find myself consistently disagreeing with Melon on almost every album he reviews. Everything he loves I hate and everything I hate he loves. From the first few songs I knew The Slow Rush was gold

@@NeverSaySandwich1 That's the song that introduced me to Tame Impala! I think they could have put Patience in place of One More Hour.
Tbf it was a bit. The album itself is phenomenal
Anthony, why do you keep forgetting to take off your shoes before entering the house? Mom said you won’t be welcomed back unless you change that kind of behavior.
I thought lonerism and currents were the bee's tits in their respective genres, but The Slow Rush feels like it may be both overdeveloped and underdeveloped at the same time. Still some great bangers, but it definitely has nowhere near the variance or punchiness of Kevin's last two albums.
The bee's tits... God help me.

It's really strange because I don't know of many artists/bands that have this kind of divide among the fans when it comes to their best album.
Hold up Melon, so the thing that makes this Tame Impala record stand out from the other one is introspection?? That’s like the key ingredient of every one of Kevin’s songs
