That vintage electric is a treasure! We've had a lot of conversations about erasers over the years (that's one reason why we don't get invited to parties that often). We still know a couple of artists who call Artgums "bread erasers", and a few who still have a stash of old fashioned typewriter erasers, the pencils with an abrasive eraser core and a brush on the end. If you find that the paper surface has been altered too much after erasing, an agate burnisher can compress and smooth a rough passage enough that it won't stand out too much from the rest of the page, and even accept more drawing media.

    • @ssavaart

Haha. I love it. I remember the ones with the brushes on the other end.
Also. I looked for Large Marge on your site, but sadly she wasn’t available anymore.
Thank you for having all the others. ❤️

What is the shelf life of an eraser? 🙋 I still have not one but two of those Staedtler eraser pencils with a brush at the end, all in baby blue colour. They are indeed very abrasive (probably too dry, since they are from the 80s). My father used a typewriter and had many of those very thin hexagonal erasers with a little hole in the middle. They were probably made in the 50s. All part of a collection I was unaware I was forming. Hope I continue to be invited to parties 🤭 nevertheless.

@@berolinastrassmann Erasers can dry out and lose the components that make them pliable ("plasticizers") but we think storage conditions can play a factor. Typewriter erasers were always almost too abrasive for use in artistic drawing, but in a desperate moment, when nothing else works, it's nice to have the "nuclear option"

I didn’t know electric erasers could get as big as Marge! I personally just use cheap eraser caps from the dollar store. The triangle shape lets me erase fine details if needed, but usually since I ink and color my drawings I just need something to erase my light pencil marks under the outlines. I don’t draw with just pencil anymore, but if I did I’d probably want an electric eraser too

My favorite erasers of all time were some cat erasers my sister got me in middle school.. I never used them but one day a girl I had a crush on borrowed one and used it and I liked her too much to get mad about it and she was like “woah.. that’s a smooth eraser! Can I keep this?” and I tried it… it was better than the expensive art erasers and the perfect blend of smooth, sticky, and soft.
My sister bought me a bunch more so I could actually use them and I used them sparingly for years!
Still the best erasers I’ve ever used and I’ve never been able to find them again… i can’t remember the brand name and I’ve tried a bunch.. it sucks.

Idk if you'll see this, but thank you for inspiring me to just throw stuff on the canvas whether I think it'll be good or not, to not be afraid to just kinda see what happens and be ok with making something I don't love. It's helped free me from the paralysis of perfectionism and I've finished two small practice paintings that I've been able to give away to friends who genuinely actually liked them! (': they weren't fantastic but they're my first two attempts at gouache in the first place so I'm telling myself to go easy on the criticism 😅 and I'm definitely learning things for next time lol like I'm afraid of highlights and shadows aaaand that gouache needs a binder on these canvases or it cracks heh but ya know, that's ok! Art Gum is used for shading a lot, because it leaves a gray powder dark shade when it's done a erasing.

After a quick glance I didn’t see anyone recommending erasers. So I’m gonna throw out my favorite, mono brand eraser! I personally love the black one. For some reason I feel as if it doesn’t smear the lead around as much as the white one. But I would use any Mono brand eraser over all others! I love them a lot!

When i was in an artclub, our teacher was very against erasers and we only had kneaded erasers.
i worked with charcoal a lot, but regardless, kneaded erasers are great to fidget with. maybe better as a fidget than a eraser for me lol
    now i use markers anyway.

My favorite back-of-pencil eraser has gotta be the Black Ticonderogas, but for a block, I've fallen in love with the Sakura Arch Foam Black. It's a thinner eraser, good mostly for smaller areas or use in a classroom, but it's probably the most easy on the hand eraser I've used. Has a nice perforated sleeve to make peeling it off as the eraser shortens easier too.
I got mine hunting around on JetPens but I'm sure they're other places too.

Do More left-handed Art,I'd like to see you practice that since it'll give you more flexibility for your Art and let you have a bit more freedom of what you choose, trust me on this because I try and practice and I get better each time, you should try it!
You did once say that art isn't art because of its quality but it's the storytelling that makes art,Art

Hey Scot, you might not see this but your missing a key eraser that I loved. Those tiny cute animal erasers you’d see at the pound shop if your lucky, they’re not that good, but my god did I love them. Tbh I think I just liked that they came as wee tigers and dolphins and other random animals. I just want to know if it’s just me that liked them/knows what I’m talking about

You forgot to add those clic erasers into the arsenal. You know the ones that are white and slide in & out of a plastic tube with a switch and make that zipper clicking sound as they retract and extend. Nice for tight spots and refillable and not too messy.
