Huge fan of Sheryl Crow's music, but I'm guessing this version works only for someone who has never heard the Jackson Browne original. I'm going there now to hear Jesse Ed Davis play some of the finest electric guitar ever recorded.
Often state originals can't be improved upon. I seem to gravitate back to the Originals. Sheryl Crow has always been one of my favorites, and very easy on the eyes, [ha, I used eyes?] but she sacrificed this song. Absolutely no one should dabble around or change the original song. There are a few that cover some original songs that actually do the songs Justice, but few and far between.
great VOICE 🙌 and performance 📣🎵🎵🎵🎵🎸
she gave it a new swing...refreshing :D I love the original, but you can't ignore that she is extremely competent when doing versions...
jackson browne called he wants his song back
Well, I like both versions!
Sheryl...I am your biggest fan, I love it when you RE-MAKE music,,,,you always give it a new sound by doing it YOUR WAY!!! GREAT JOB!!! And after dealing with your breast cancer, it is a perfect song for your battles. Keep Well.
Thank you for posting.
Jackson Browne's live rendition of DME is a hard rocking ear candy masterpiece - just fantastic. Not down w/ Crow's interpretation of this amazing tune.
Even though this song was sung and promoted as rock to bring attention to the first album and to help sell the first album, it could have been sung without the rock sound and often is , but not just as ear candy. Please go back to Raphael Falzarano's excellent explanation on this YT site with lyrics, about this unusual song. Yes, Jackson still plays it as rock with his hard thumping , hand thumping piano and can wring a lot out of this complex song, but I'd like you to know just how complex it is. And as you said , it is a masterpiece.
I enjoy this 6/8 time version. I LVOE LVOE LVOE the concept of Sheryl Crow.
BangTidy little Rocker Babe. mm mm MM.
I wonder what the Exact Duplicate Cover Aficionados would say if Sheryl's version were the original version, and Jackson Browne were to come out with his cover?
When Browne wrote this, the lyrics were about a guy who tries to get help, but is doomed because it's too late. His record company thought it was too much of a downer, so Browne made it into a story about a guy who has gone through a lot in life and comes to accept his fate.
JACKSON BROWNE
"Doctor My Eyes"
Doctor, my eyes have seen the years
And the slow parade of fears without crying
Now I want to understand
I have done all that I could
To see the evil and the good without hiding
You must help me if you can
Doctor, my eyes
Tell me what is wrong
Was I unwise to leave them open for so long
'Cause I have wandered through this world
And as each moment has unfurled
I've been waiting to awaken from these dreams
People go just where there will
I never noticed them until I got this feeling
That it's later than it seems
Doctor, my eyes
Tell me what you see
I hear their cries
Just say if it's too late for me
Doctor, my eyes
Cannot see the sky
Is this the prize for having learned how not to cry
Sorry I just found this Rapheal , do you know the original lyrics ? Thanks for all your input , obviously from the comments some people know nothing about the background of this song , so it's good to know and share. "These Day's" written at age 16 was also considered a downer when the lyrics said "I don't know if I'll see another highway".That was deleted on his recording, but sometimes he sings it in concert. Also, this is not his only song about redemption and salvation that Jackson Browne wrote . Think " You're Bright Baby Blues", what an overlooked song.
Thanks for the lyrics. Got the original lyrics?
JACKSON BROWN SHERYL U ROCK LADY FER' SURE
Yes, this song is by Jackson Browne. Please disregard my previous incorrect response :-)
I like artists bringing back the old tunes but she should have left the upbeat tempo as it is. Jackson Browne is rolling his eyes, I betcha.
She did the same thing in a duet with Jackson on "Love Hurts" , on YT. Not good, but a great song on Jackson's part.
is the song his work?
i dont have a squat of her news in my country.
could u be kind to answer me?
Was 21st Jan 2009 the date of this show? Looks like her 2008 drummer (don't know his name), so I guess it is.
wow Ive only ever heard the Jackson 5 verson of this song until now. Never heard it sang like this before. Great version :)
Please get educated on the song.
I adore Sheryl. She's a monster talent - writer, singer player. But this version of the song is abysmal.
@rickdangerwood - no, this was during the primaries... well before the general election.
sounds like every band member is on their own time. tough to kill a phenomenal song, but they did. and not in a good way.
Call it Cheryl Crow. Sorry Cheryl.
Good try for sure, but not a fan of people messing with the arrangements of classic hits.
My sentiments exactly, I always say, You can't improve on perfection, so this song goes back to Jackson Brown.
That was a cheezy...
I like Sheryl... but I don't like her treatment of this great song..... You don't mess with a classic.
I didn't know Peter Jackson played drums
I love ya Sheryl Crow, but....nah. It just doesn't draw the same emotion for me as the original.
I really like artists putting their own style in to covers, but this one is a thumbs down. She could do a dozen other covers and make them sound the same as this.
Some songs should never be covered. This is one of them.I love Sheryl, but this is a monstrosity.
Exactly.
Y'all sexist. She's the best.
Have you heard the Garth Brooks' Cover? I may be bias but honestly i near prefer his version.
I agree. one of those songs that doesn't need to be touched
Didn't really do it for me. Doesn't really works as a doo-wop song.
Jackson does it much better. Not bad Sheryl.
Sorry! I don't like this version. You killed it. Jackson Brown does a powerful version of the revised song..WOW!
Get off the stage!
sounds like a cat crying, Jackson Brown is sooo much better
Not a good rendition.
A
