Same, I was like "Yeah Ottokar, kick Rudolph's ass, this is your fucking game" and then when the routing began everything came crashing down. Even before they showed the icon, I knew Ottokar wasn't making it out alive.
Why not? Infantry is slow compared to cavalry. If you want to keep that advantage infantry might be a liability. Back then, infantry was also less well trained. Someone had to guard the camp (which is a bit easier than attacking thousands of trained knights). When facing trained knights they would face horrible casualties.
To be honest since the death of Charlemagne every single german emperor has been weak to some degree (even the most powerful of them all, Charles Quint, still had troubles managing the whole thing despite being the ruler of half of Europe, there was never something equivalent to the absolutism you could find in France or Russia where the regime was centralized). The goal of the structure was more to keep a balance between duchies and little kingdoms in central Europe and occasionally contain a neighbor (mostly France). In the meantime by the late 1400s England and France were already done with this feudal organization and had created the proto-modern state. France slowly ate the HRE for 1000 years (beginning after Charlemagne), only after Napoléon disbanded the HRE the germans (under prussian banner) finally unified and completely reverse the military dynamic with the french but by that time Europe was already in decline and Russia/USA were on the rise.

@Stavros S. Winning was a dick move from Rudolf? The reason Rudolf got elected as Holy Roman Emperor in the first place was because Ottokar not only held the only official kingdom within the empire (Bohemia) but also two medium sized duchies in Austria and Styria. Ottokar got too powerful too quickly and Rudolf defeated him to restore the balance of power within the empire.

It is said Ulrich von Kapellen actually apologised to his troops for executing such an "unchivalrous" maneuver, but this might be just myth.
Were there any reasons to bend the knee earlier, while Ottokar had been in control of such a large territory? Bohemian rebellion was, obviously, a problem, but surely having far bigger tax and manpower pool offered better chances to deal with the emperor and rebellion at the same time, rather than face Rudolph using vanilla Bohemian army later on. Any missing details here? I imagine rebellion was not a coincidence - and if core lands could resent their monarch so much, perhaps Rudolph was also able to convince local elites in non-Bohemian lands to abandon Ottokar?
Otokar had to make sure there was no chance of noble uprising/civil war in his core lands(Bohemia, Moravia). He wasnt ready at first as his power wasnt consolidated enough in the new teritories. It took him two years to get ready as mentioned and although with less resources his chances were higher then...
Záviš of Falkenstein specifically. He kept suspiciously good relations with Rudolf when he served as a de facto ruler of Czech lands after death of Ottokar II. It's not proven but it seems plausible that he was in league with Rudolf even earlier. Strong crown means weaker nobles which the nobles understandably disliked.

Please don't stop posting!!!!! Every week I look at your channel for new content xD thanks for the uploads !
It took him two years to get ready as mentioned and although with less resources his chances were higher then...
the uprising was not a coincidence. Rudolf planned it.
I do not know why he did not mention it there
Correct. It appears that Rudolph managed to bribe or otherwise convince several nobles to abandon Ottokar.
Really nice of you to insert a czech dialogue bubble for Ottokar.
Can you make a video about the Siege of Belgrade (1456)?
I have been at the site of the battle. I have friends in Jedenspeigen und Dürnkrut. The castle is still there in Jedenspeigen and there's a Medieval festival each year because of the battle and it is awesome.

The Battle of Manzikert
I hail from Czech republic, so that little fraze "Budeš toho litovat Rudolfe!" is very apreciated :D
Fun fact: Ottokar's son and Rodolf's daughter got married.

This one had normal jaw. But only because he didnt have time yet to breed so many kids that they inbreed.

No wait, Avengers 4 trailer released today, that was quicker.
Great video, the HRE gets so little exposure on youtube while it was an astonishingly and interesting construct.
Few mistakes used with Google translate: "Budeš toho litovat RudolfE" (E is important here, bcs of Czech language) and also kokoti is written with I not Y. But even then very good video!

Thanks for including bohemian history!
holy shit theres literally my homevillage in this. yay i guess
My ancestors were fro Tabor.
@@jeanfish7 Tabor in the South of Bohemia? I'd say that's a great honor to have the ancestors from there. The city itself was formed in 1420 by the Hussites, it was something like "holy" land for them. It was inhabited by many great warriors at that time. Still one my favourite parts of our history.

if this battle ended differently, all of history would be different.
there most probably being a Czech dominance in the HRE and thus removing German dominance, thus leading to no WW1 (and WW2).
we would most probably have different wars to replace these in our timeline... basically a completely different world.
and none of us would be alive.
Love it when Baz has a new video, never disappointing.

FastMover CZ yes, at Battle of Domažlice. That broke a spirit of some and shortly whole crusade was running away from Czech lands without any major fight.

I bet this tradition was started by the infantry.
"We are not worthy, you knights should be fighting and claiming the glory for yourselves"
Its more of a matter of pride in their duty as defenders of the kingdom, seeing as shameful the infantry doing most of their work for them

Do siege of Acre 1291!
This was the battle that put the Habsburgs in charge of Austria. It’s possible that this was the battle that insured that Austria would exist as a country today.

At least it's a king, not the Emperor. :P
Actually...They didnt.
The Pope created that title. So hes calling them Romans.

You should cover the Battle of Benevento, 1266 AD. It was a pretty pivotal point for the history of Italy (prevented unification under Manfred of Hohenstaufen) and Byzantium (forced the emperor to refocus his efforts from Anatolia to the Balkans, indirectly leading to the rise of the Ottomans). It might have also had effects on Ottokar, as, after Benevento, Manfred's relative Conradin, Duke of Swabia, decided to embark on an ill-fated expedition to Italy where he was killed, causing Swabia to splinter. :)
