- Bob Saget tragically passed away on January 9th, 2022 at the age of 65. Although the cause of death was initially a mystery after he was found unresponsive in his hotel bed, autopsy results were released one month later. They revealed a subdural hematoma, a blood clot that forms between the surface of the brain and the dura, its protective covering. Follow along as I explain the details of Bob Saget's tragic death, explain the causes and treatments of subdural hematoma, and offer an interpretation of the tragic events surrounding his death.

Last week My 78yr old dad lost his balance and fell down….hitting his head on the concrete. Because of Bob Saget’s story, I rushed him to the ER even though he said he felt fine. The CT Scan revealed a very small Subdural Hematoma. After a night in the hospital for observation, he was sent home. It’s been a week since his fall and the huge bump on his head has gone down and he continues to be ok. 🙏🏽 Always take head injuries seriously 👍🏽

Ok after reading a ton of these comments i now will throw my hat into the ring. First let me tell u i am a retired nurse. I was working in the ER one night when a victim of a car wreck was brought in. A trk had crashed head on into his car doing at least 60 mph according to the police. His head had struck the rear view mirror. The force broke off the mirror and ran the stem of it into his forehead. The xrays of his skull seem pretty close to what has been described as Bob Sagets. He had an almost perfect round hole that spread out in cracks to the back of his head.His head did hold together . His injury was just the opposite of Sagets as it was front to back not back to front. Trust me, this man was in no condition to get in bed and go nite ,nite ! He was DOA. We tried resuscitation but he was gone. The EMTs said he was barely alive when they got to him but died just as they reached the hospital. So i wld think that unless be fell from a 10 story floor and then got up and went to his room to lie down for a while ,or he fell backwards at about 50 mph, something else happened to him . There is my two cents . For what its worth!! Thank you to those who read this to the end !
The only difference is bob had (separate) cracks. Different areas were hit separately, Bob was beaten

I saw the autopsy report from the ME with detailed images. He hit the back of his head on a hard surface (blunt trauma) and suffered a fracture which also resulted in a subdural hematoma. Then what happened due to physics/momentum is his head bounced back in the opposite direction and hit another hard surface causing what's caused a "countercoup" injury/fracture (a fracture 180 degrees to the original fracture), along with other injuries including the orbital fractures and the two black eyes. He may have lost consciousness and regained consciousness making his way to his back where he died. This all very likely occured in the bathroom amidst the hard tiled surfaces. So yes, it is very possible and does happen. Also, there was no bleeding with Mr. Saget, it was all internal. These are two completely different cases you are comparing... NOT similar.
Someone killed Bob. Was it due to a gambling debt? An offended mob boss? A hooker who tried to roll him? Whatever it was, people found on their back nice and neat with one arm to their side and another across their chest have been put in that position. This wasn't an accident.

I was shoved out of a moving vehicle by a convicted murderer on the run working where he shouldn't have been. I was a campground customer . broke my C1 shoved it up sideways under skull huge hematoma hit bumpy assault bounced like a rag doll the more I tried to stop it more I seemed to hit pavement my periocardonal sac was choking out my heart which was loosen from wall bubble on optic nerve from blow tec ligiments shred Ed up one side down other. point is saget had 1by1gash at what appear way high on back of head. had to be blood he had racoons eyes .... and no sign of. trama later investigation then???? b. s.

If there were no signs of forced entry or foul play other than the injury he sustained, they have nothing to go on so they probably had to rule it accidental. I would hope they looked at hotel footage to see if anyone entered his room or intercepted him upon walking up to his room. If they did that and saw nothing, I’m not sure what else they can do. It probably helps the family to know what happened and have closure too. I’m sorry about what happened to you.

He had multiple skull fractures. His death should be investigated, not "explained away". The cameras in the Ritz-Carlton should be reviewed. Unless he told the family or someone else about a fall that he suffered, this is a mystery. Fell? Fell on what? Too many unanswered questions.

When the news first broke of Mr. Saget's passing, we were told that he had just finished doing a 2 hour show.
Then, he called his wife talked with her on the phone for approximately 1or 1/2 hours. With the Supteminal Hematoma how was he able to do all of these things?
How long, usually, is it for a person with this serious life threatening condition?
With this new information, a "Timeline" needs to be established.
Also, an eyewitness said his skin was very yellow which would be jaundice.

Bc he was in his bed..fully clothed, on top of covers, if he did that in the bathroom that’s where he would’ve been found, not the bed. So he was definitely already IN BED
My moms family friend that lived around the block had alcoholism, fell, hit her head and died. I never understood why, but a subdural hematoma seems to be why. Thanks for explaining!

It’s worse when drunk people fall because they aren’t coordinated and aren’t able to break their falls. I learned this fun fact after reading about unfortunate cases of drunken fist fights turning deadly sometimes even after one punch. Then the guy who threw the punch gets charged with murder.
He didn't just bump the back of his head, his skull was cracked from the back and the front and he had brain bleed on both sides of his brain, this is very strange and the police saying he bumped his head when his injury goes way beyond a bumped head.

She fell out ON STAGE and hit the back of her head hard enough to cause skull fractures. In her case it was the vaccine that caused it. But the same thing could have happened to bob. He could have literally just woken up on his back and not known what happened, and went to his room to gather himself. The brain bleed could have caused him to have reduced cognition and he felt tired also as a result, so he laid down not knowing what danger he was in and died.
It is unlikely an are adults skulls more prone to fractures? Because my kids always get bumps and bruises on their heads from rough playing and bump their heads but nothing serious

Your skull can crack in several places when hit from the back. It's like an egg shell. If he slipped in the shower this could have easily happened. Also, note they did find two drugs in his system. It's in the report.
32 year career as RN with 25 in ICU here. It's so sad that something like this happens. We always talk about patient education but I've always felt we as health care people need to go a step further.... PUBLIC education! Such injuries like this are a perfect example. Mr. Saget's injuries himself and developed pain/headache. Like most people he likely thought I'll just lay down take a nap and feel better when I wake up. So sorry for his loss and condolences to his family!

I hope you have time to briefly answer a question I’ve been thinking about: in Sweden the amount of gun-related deaths are increasing so I’ve been wondering, what exactly is happening to the human brain to make a person die instantly when a gunshot is aimed towards the head? Thank you for amazing content!
I like the topic but I think that question is too broad...What caliber of bullet will matter a ton for example. Also you have to consider which area of the brain is being hit, to just say the entire brain is too broad. Did it go enter and exit the skull? Did it not exit and stay lodged? What part of the brain got hit? You'd need a case specific example to go off of. If you get shot with a .50 cal, you aren't going to have a head... it will be a red puff of mist. If you get shot with a .45,.357, 3.08 or 7.62 you aren't gonna look good maybe lose a chunk of your face. If you get hit with something like a 5.56 or a 9mm you will likely still die but maybe the casket might be able to remain open. There are a lot of variable to consider when looking at gun related head injuries and based on a question as broad as yours I would say that a bullet can destroy and entire head like a pumpkin (see videos of .50 cals) or can rip parts of your face off and go clean through your head. In all those cases your brain is like a watermelon and the bullet is ripping through that. Some people survive shooting themselves in the head with a 9mm. But even then I would still suggest grabbing a specific case to use as a reference point to due how many variables can become involved.
How do we know that the hit to his head was the result of an unwitnessed fall and not an assault?
How likely is it that a sober, 65-year-old with no known neurological issue will randomly fall hard enough to cause a lethal head trauma, then get up and go to bed?
I have hit my head hard enough to require medical attention. If these head traumas were hard enough to be lethal without medical attention, I'm not sure. But I am sure I would not have been able to get up on my own and go to bed after each accident.(I've hit my head hard enough to need medical attention 5 times, every time as a child under 16 and once in a car at age 18).
If Saget was assaulted, perhaps in his room, whoever committed the assault could have put him into bed, removed any evidence they had been there and left long before the time Saget was due to check out and would be checked on.

I’ve hit my head multiple times over my life, too. Including some severe car accidents.
And have suffered a cracked skull from a severe fall from a concrete platform, onto concrete steps, when my head (& body) slammed backwards onto them.
Don’t know how long I was ‘out’, as I was alone. But after the initial shock wore a bit, I was able to ever so slowly get up, get to a phone, talk w/someone who was busy, so didn’t want to bother them....then slowly walk outside to sit, thinking I would be OK, in a bit.
After IDK how much more time, I somehow managed to drive the 3 miles home, not able to lean back at all.
I then took a shower & when the water hit my head, I was stunned into more reality. Looking down, I saw the tub of blood & knew I had to get to the hospital.
Again I called a friend, who left immediately to come take me. It was a holiday weekend & the ER was full. All my friend had to do was turn me around slowly to show my back, that was now soaked in blood. They couldn’t get me to a room fast enough.
And after I knew all this, I realized why a very crowded ER room went silent when we stood at the desk.
Yes, I had other major injuries that had them in wonder how I ever did what I did. But when you’re in shock, your brain shuts down in areas to ‘survival mode’, & ppl are able to do ‘what’s necessary.’ Things they’d otherwise never be able to.
I had no medical ins, which is why I didn’t call an ambulance & was trying to avoid the ER.
I also have always had a very high pain tolerance.
I took a long time to heal from that. Especially my brain, that took the longest.
I believe the initial reports, that said he was found face down, on the floor of his room. That was carpeted....

Weekend getaway, I wasn't paying attention and walked full force into a low-hanging branch. Whiplashed my neck (second whiplash in a couple of years, as I had had a car accident prior to this), knocked me to the ground; most of the impact was to my hip and elbow. I was more worried about my hip than anything, but could walk, so just went back to the motel.
I had some new vague, weird symptoms that I couldn't explain. Weakness. Tremors. Cramping. I couldn't explain them, so didn't seek help.
A year later, nothing was better; my memory was shot. My thinking was cloudy. My vision was disturbed. My balance was GONE.
Turns out that I had a birth defect in my skull, of which I was unaware, at 55 years old. A Chiari Malformation.
When my neck snapped back, the narrowed opening of my skull PINCHED MY BRAINSTEM. Could see the crimp mark on an MRI.
I ended up having a decompression, to create more space for my spinal cord/ brain stem, to relieve the excess CSF pressure in my head.
That helped a great deal, but a year out, I still have some symptoms, I just manage them better.
So YEAH, a "minor injury" can be a huge deal without your knowledge, and people DO just crawl into bed, thinking that they'll get checked out tomorrow if it's still a problem.
@@sonneversets3530 I read that he was found laying fully clothed on his bed. Since they say no one entered his room before him or exited after this incident, I have a theory. What if he took the stairs to his room and fell in the stairwell. Hit his head and just continued on to his room. However, since there is now a report of catastrophic injuries, don’t think that’s possible. I would like to know what floor the room was on and if someone could have snuck in from a balcony. This mystery will probably never get solved.

It should add up. I have a friend who works at a Ski resort and he could tell you that it's happened many times. They actually found two drugs in his system that could also explain it. Might have had a seizure.

According to the autopsy, Mr Saget had scalp lacerations and a fractured skull. His upper and lower eyelids showed trauma, consistent with a skull fracture. The Medical Examiner also noted that Mr. Saget was taking prescribed Klonopin, had an enlarged heart and atherosclerosis in his arteries.
He had taken some of these new experimental drugs that are known to cause myocarditis & pericarditis in some. It is possible that taking this drug & it’s ‘boosters’, could very well be a contributing factor to all of this.

That points to 2 possibilities:
1. Suicide by hanging and a fall.

Years ago I was leaning back in my chair asleep and I fell back and hit the back of my head, I was immediately knocked out and later woke up in a dark room with doctors outside of room. A few days later they let me out of the hospital and said I didn’t need any rehabilitation which is interesting to say the least, Always remember to protect your head because it’s the only one you got 😇👍🏾

not a theory, as former officer, no offence but that doesn't mean anything in this situation, as you weren't trained to analyze post mortem bodies and their traumas (with the given information of the scene as well). If you said you were a trainer Medical Examiner, now that would mean something. This is not your expertise.

As a former Home Health Aide, I have had to assist clients into and out of tubs/showers so as to prevent serious accidents that can also cause blunt traumas to the head. I believe as large and tall as he is, I think he fell forward possibly hitting his head on the showerhead knocking him backwards in the shower then temporarily passed out, got back up but didn't realize how severe his accident was and just went got in the bed. There is a video where Mr. Saget predicted from his on mouth that he would be found in dead bed; so he may have had unwitnessed accidents in the shower before and said nothing about them.
so it takes a certain amount of force to cause this injiury. how common is it that a person would hit their head with this amount of force and not seek medical attention?

The actress Natasha Richardson died because she fell backwards during a skiing instruction incident. She hit the back of her head. She acted embarrassed and laughed it off. Witnesses said she felt tired later and went to lie down. They found she had died in her sleep due to brain bleed. So its not unheard of. I am suspicious about this one though.

This was very informative, it also help me to understand the autopsy process a bit better when this skull cap is replaced and held together with appropriate 3 small nuts and bolts. Usually the brain is not put back into the skull because the brain become more like a grey gelatin matter and could very easily leak out after the skull cap is replaced and the skin layer is closed.
Thanks for this. My father experienced a subdural hematoma in 2004. He survived it thanks to multiple surgeries at a large Dallas hospital. He died of a rare form of lymphoma in 2010, after a 2006 diagnosis. He was almost 82. We don’t know what injury caused his hematoma but I understand they can occasionally occur spontaneously in geriatric patients. I have always been curious if he had undiagnosed lymphoma at the time of the brain incident, and whether this may have increased the likelihood of the sdh.

1) It is a normal human response to severe pain to want to curl into a ball and go to sleep. So finding Mr. Saget in bed is no great surprise.
2) Consider just *how many* times you have seen someone receive a blow to the head that renders them unconscious, in movies and television shows, over the course of your life. More than likely in the thousands, if not more than that. Because of the way it is presented to us, without any followup as to the physical consequences, we consider it as simply "being knocked out", and think no more of it. But a significant portion of those blows to the head, were they real and not merely simulated and glossed over, would likely have resulted in subdural hematoma, or at least severe concussion. Small wonder, then, that we see boxers, football and hockey players coming down with significant brain damage over their careers. Severe blows to the head are simply dangerous, no matter how much someone is paying you.
when I was 18 I passed out , fell in my bathroom and hit the back of my head on a porcelain bath tub . My mother found me having a seizure …I then started throwing up immediately ..and suffered amnesia . I was admitted into the hospital for about a week with severe dizzy/room spinning episodes. They gave me multiple tests including EEG , woke me up every 2 hours etc.. I never had any skull fractures , just a really good size painful bump on the back of my head …so my question is …how on earth does someone suffer that extreme of a head injury with skull fractures ,without vomiting, seizure or severe room spinning? The doctor in this video says there was no signs of foul Play and no signs of trauma. That is bs. Other doctors have said the severity of the skull fracture on the back of his head and the fractures on the front of his head were actually more severe than you would expect to see from falling and hitting your head on the tile floor, the corner of a nightstand, etc.
Why can't you understand? This doctor is saying there were no signs of trauma. Since when is severe skull fracturing not considered caused by a trauma. So the op is correct, swelling does not cause skull fractures. Only an impact of enough severity can cause such injury. Maybe he fell and broke his head on the tile floor. Other medical experts have said even that would not cause the severity of the trauma. But this doctor is saying there was no evidence of trauma!
I think it's the common falling backward from 30 feet in the air that cracked the rear of his skull, then standing up and falling face first and breaking his eye sockets. Bob realized how tired he was from the show he had performed and got into bed and laid very still in the center of it until he woke up dead.

I am a mostly retired physician who specializes in Addiction and Occupational Medicine. However, initially I wanted to train in Pathology and still love that specialty. Causes of death still intrigue me. Saget's autopsy carefully used phrases like "no illicit drugs" or alcohol were involved. Yet Saget still may have taken a prescribed sleeping pill or sedative at bedtime. This could have caused drowsiness and led to his slip and fall. A cascade of events then tragically led to his demise. The late Natasha Richardson suffered a head injury--followed by the "lucid interval" where she rejected medical help. At some point a coma ensues and the victim is too obtunded to respond and save themselves.

I wonder what he hit his head on. Did he fall un the bathroom, maybe the shower? He had to have hit it hard enough to daze him. I took a good whack to the head about a week ago. It felt like it was bleeding so I put my hand up to it but no blood so I started getting worried that it was bleeding inside. I was afraid to go to sleep because I was thinking of Bob Saget. I'm fine of course but you just never know. It is still sore to the touch a week later so I hit it pretty good. I've always been told I was hard headed. The outlet posted the autopsy report, which said Saget suffered multiple fractures stretching from the back to the front of the skull and along the eye sockets. It also revealed there was bleeding across both sides of his brain. The Daily Mail cited one report in which a doctor said the injuries in the autopsy appeared consistent with a blow to the skull with a baseball bat or falling 20 to 30 feet.
So obviously, according to this doctor that is either irrelevant or false. It's really really bothering me that he does not address the actual injury that caused the subdural hematoma. Everybody is just glossing over the cause of the injury. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

I had a subdural hematoma when I was 5 months old in 1967. I recently turned 55 and have had no long-term effects. I've always wondered how the procedure was done and now I know. I don't think I have any titanium screws in my head so I wonder how they closed the skull flap on babies back in 1967. I have 2 scars just above my hairline that still hurt if I hit them with a hair brush.
So what is the working theory as to how he suffered a blow severe enough to cause the hemotoma? He was in his hotel room and was sober. What if someone wacked him hard with a blunt object that caused no external damage, but caused his hemotoma? How have the authorities ruled this out? it sounded from the autopsy as though he landed on his face... again, how does one accomplish this when stone sober? The police must have some sort of theory, or maybe they just don't care.

So both orbital sockets fractures on the back and temple of head. I don't think that is possible from a fall at ground level. Im no dr but listening to other drs.
one of the meds he was prescribed included the prescription for seizures among other things, I am not sure if he was prone to seizures but if he was walking in the hotel room had a seizure he could have hit his head numerous times, come out of it and then gone to bed. If you ever see someone having a seizure hold their head off the floor

My 80 year old dad died after being airlifted to a a major hospital. He had 10 brain bleeds going but no current fall. He was on blood thinners. His cause if death was subdues hematoma due to blunt force injury but his fall had been long enough to have no head bruising. He died 36 hours after being admitted to hospital. He was too severe to successfully recover from surgery.

Question about performing the surgery to remove the hematomas. You mentioned that they will replace the bone flap with titanium plates and metal screws. Do they need to make these plates custom for the exact size of the patient? If so, how do they cast them and ship them to the operating room quickly enough to be used for emergency surgeries?
OR nurse here. While I think they can somehow make a artificial skull, i don’t think that can be done in an emergency. I believe the surgeon is referring to using plates and screws to put the skull back in place after surgery. They are very, very small screws! The plates are not typically custom made. We have have many different shapes and sizes available.

This is a really good. Thank you for addressing this, because I feel like not enough people realize how dangerous it can be to hit the head - especially in the way that he did. The number of patients I’ve seen (not a neurosurgeon, a DOC ARNP - we see this injury A LOT in jails) who hit the back of the head, laid down, and had a negative outcome is unfortunately high. Awareness of the potential dangers of this type of head injury, even when you think you’re fine or are just embarrassed and wants to lay down and forget it, is so impossible to quantify, but damn would it reduce the number of unnecessary head injury deaths would significantly decline.

I read that he was on the 9th floor. Did he take the stairs and fall there? He was a tall guy. With him having COVID, he may have had POTS. He is the 3rd comedian who has had a fall with a head injury (see Heather McDonald's interview with Dr. Drew).

I'm an RN and was really shocked to hear it was some sort of trauma to the head. I have taken care of many patients with sudden brain bleeds or slight bumps that resulted in a subdural. But they were almost always on a blood thinner or had a coagulopathy of some kind. 65 is young for such a thing, IMO. He had to be on aspirin or a prescribed anti coagulant. Poor Bob. I hope he just went to sleep and peacefully passed.
