jimthecarguy is a better man than I am. I loved working on my 73 240Z. An alternator is a snap as with everything else but replacing an alternator on a 2011 Nissan Maxima or anything else? Forget about it. This video convinced me not to even try. You can't see anything in the newer car models let alone reach anything. Thanks Jim, It helped.

Just replaced mine thanks to your video. 98 Infinity I30. Once I dropped the compressor the alternator practically fell out the wheel well :) It is amazing that the manual says to remove the fan shroud and take it out the top, worst method possible.
Btw, I recommend having long needle nose pliers for pulling the electrical connector off. I spent a full 30 minutes just doing this part lol. Because, or course, I didnt have those pliers.....
Now all I have to do is replace the rest of the car and I am good to go.
Thanks Jim for putting up this video.

All things considered this is one of the best videos I've ever seen on you tube regrding my 4th Gen Maxima. No BS sound track of annoying music, good camera work with no useless angles off subject and pretty good Clear narration. Having done this job 2x in the same 2 days at one time I would only add that had you named off the size of the bolt heads and maybe tool that' best ie 12mm Deep Socket, 14mm box end wrench etc it would have made this even better. I already know from putting a defective rebuilt in after being stranded in the desert for 6days having to do it all again that everything is either a 12mm or 14mm with a 10mm here and there. I must say you made it look easy but i recall it was a BITCH like everything else I've had to fix like the water pump which is a real fun experience if your hands are bigger than a hamsters. Thanks for showing me the tensioner did not have to come out. I did remove it and it was a bitch to hold the bolt that goes thru the idler pulley in the correct position while re installing it. Also the through-bolt for the alternator was hell for me. Maybe it was the exposure after 6 days in the dirt without and facilities or running water lol

Thanks alot man! This will help i'm about to take my alternator out of my nissan maxima '98. The only thing I couldn't see was how you took off the drive belt. Did you loosen the tensioner at the top first or just undo the side bolt? It was also very helpful that you explained where the bolts are on the compressor and that the cooling fan doesn't need to come out!

  • @demetriusjohnson3677

I have a 07 Maxima and I broke the torque bolt getting it to release the tension. Now I got to replace that and try to get the alternator bolt loose without stripping it. Can I go from the back and loosen the bolt? Do I have to drop the compressor as well?

Dealer dude, I'm not sure but the i30 and the Maxima if in the 1996-2000 model year range should be the same. If it's different it's those F'kng Nissan Engineers still hold a grudge, I swear this car is proof they never forgave our psychopathic military power structure for dropping the nukes. But that;s another topic . Oh yeh just call parts at the Nissan dealer and they can tell you if the max fits the i30 unless they wanna be dicks. Infiniti will likely cost you more for same

Hey BTW and FYI Don't do what I did 2 yrs ago and think "i'll deal with the leaking valve cover afterwards"...That's what I did and now the oil killed it so I've been on foot for a week. The front bank VC leaks right into the connector and voltage regulator. It's $56 bucks for a gasket kit. This time Im buying it and AT LEAST do the one side...Which leads me to this question for Jim: the bank against the firewall under the intake...scale of 1-10 how much grief to replace that VC gasket?

It HAS TO spin freely. BUT the 14mm nut must be tight. If the pulley locks up after having been removed it means you put the spacer(s), washer(s) back in the wrong order. 12mm as I recall. It's ALL 12/14mm at the alt. In fact with few exception 10-12-14mm covers 90% of fasteners on the engine external until you get to the suspension/chassis. Video made it look like it fell out on it's own. I had a bitch of a time getting the alternator aligned , holding it there and the through bolt back in when replacing it.

Just finished replacing my alternator on 02 Maxima. I removed the radiator and cooling fans to see if it was easier, since that is what the manual instructed to do. I can now say that I see no reason to removing them, it is much easier to follow this video and it saves time. It took me about 5 hours with a break for lunch. That long bold on the back gave me the biggest problem. Thank You for posting this video. You are a true master mechanic and I will be following you now.

The steal bushings on each side of the replacement unit may need to moved slightly by a rap witha hammer. You can;t see that the struggle is this while your blind and fighting to line it up. And don't put it in backwards, it doesn't end well.
