This video saved me a lot of time and effort but there are some things i can add.
I was able to ease the alternator out of the bottom w/o taking off the fans on the radiator. If you push back the a/c unit and take the alternator out pulley first pulling it dwn after you loosen it you can squeeze by the lower radiator hose. If u like you can take the hose off but i didn't. With a little pressure it came out and went back up the same way saving me a lot more time amd effort of removing those fans

Best tutorial I have seen so far. Even though most say you don't need to do it I am glad you showed the fan shroud removal. I need to remove that because my drivers side fan is loose and rattles. Do you know if there is a nut on the front that I can tighten for the fan? It feels like there is but until I pull the whole thing off I wont know for sure.
I appreciate the way you show the location of the bolts and give tips to remove them.
By the way you should post this as infiniti I-30 as well.Thx

Thanks for creating this video it was a big help a friend of mine and myself were able to replace my alternator on my 95 maxima this weekend. You do have to drop the AC compressor but we were actually able to wiggle the alternator out without removing the radiator fan shroud. Also like you said in the video make sure you do get the proper amp alternator for you vehicle mine was a 110 amp even though it had a U.S. emissions sticker and not the California State emissions. After looking at a 125 amp alternator in comparison to the 110 amp you can definitely tell the mounting brackets are different.
Thanks again for this helpful video

The California type alternator has serial number LR1110-709. If you can't find the part number on the alternator, take the alternator to your local part store. The California type & non-California type have slightly different housings. You can match up the housing at the part store and buy the correct part. Cheers.

I just took my alternator off and it was easy after watching this video. I'm so happy that I followed your instructions because it seems that there are different ways that Nissan made the bolts. I'm not sure about this but I watched other videos and saw different bolts and nuts holding the alternator. I took my alternator off through the bottom. I was having trouble taking it off from the top. I was scrubbing my radiator when I tried to take it off from the top. I'm sure I could have taken it from the top but I was frightened that I was harming my radiator. It came out of the bottom in a flash. I read on a Nissan help site that you should take out the radiator to take it out from the top. I'm not a professional and I am certainly not as good as you are. So my comments are just me wondering about the subject. I saw in your video that you didn't have a problem at all pulling that alternator out. I am so thankful for your excellent video. I can't thank you enough!!!

Our radiator seemed to be a different standard to yours as we could remove the fan unit pretty easy without removing the top radiator hose. We still couldn't seem to remove the alternator, so we removed the bracket that is the upper fixing of the alternator to the engine block, dropped the A/C unit down and back and managed to squeeze the alternator out through the wheel arch. Don't know how you managed to do this on your own and your camera work in tight spaces is impressive. Thanks!

Just did this yesterday August 30, 2013. Took me 6 hours cause its my first time doing this.
    Great video. Perfect.
If i may add i found that i did not had to remove the top coolant hose as i had the battery out and could tilt and shift the fans out.
All in in this video is perfect.

Thank You so much. You have saved me a lot of headaches. Also, you can do this with out opening the cooling system. the "fins" on the side of the cooling fans come off (all you do is tilt them out at the top and pull up), then you can simply jockey the fans out towards the passenger side. other than that, your video is Awesome. I love your camera work. very clear and concise.

Hi MIke. If you test & charge the battery, and the results look good, you can keep the battery you have. If the battery doesn't hold a charge, then go ahead and replace it. (Your local auto part store will test your battery often for free.) Nothing is needed to adjust the alternator. Just give yourself enough time to complete the job.

You can cut the bands on that hose clamp with just some clippers. If you push down on the top of the bolt it will bend away from the hose and give you enough room to fit them in. Big time saver.

Fantastic tutorial! It really helped us to swap out the alternator today and everything is working well again for just the price of a new alternator and some coolant and a day of cursing! The bolts were about as hard as in the video but it was the electrical connectors which were a bitch. The secondary wiring (a sensor?) to the alternator we couldn't get off in situ and we disconnected it at the other 2 ends and dragged it out still attached to the alternator.

Hi Gods. Sorry for the late reply. Your comment did not end up in my inbox. There really isn't any trick. If you can't remove the electrical tab, try - very gently - using long needle nose pliers and gently squeezing the plastic tab. You have to be really careful if you try this technique but it will work.

Hi Gladimir. Did you buy the correct alternator? There are two types; California type and non-California. The new alternator fits where the old alternator was located. And yes, you need the end point of where the long bolt is screwed in to. Take a look on my facebook page. I'll insert a diagram showing the two bolts.

Couldn't say for sure how hot the pulley gets under load, but you can check the belt deflection. If you didn't buy a new belt, the range is 4.2-4.6mm (if your car has A/C) and applying 22ft lbs.

I just replaced mine yesterday. '98 infinity I30. You didnt have to remove the shroud and take it out the top. You almost had it ready to take out from the wheel well. All you needed to do was disconnect the wire to the AC pump and let it drop all the way down. The alternator will practically fall out once it is pulled from its sitting position......
I can't imagine the '97 being any different. Same method works for 2000 as well.

Unfortunately, you can't remove the alternator unless you lower the a/c compressor. You'll find out when you do the job. It's very tight. In regards to the radiator, just take your time because it's a very tight squeeze. You can definitely damage the radiator if you aren't careful.

If I remember correctly, they're mostly 14mm sizes. However, you'll come across 10mm and 13mm as well. Just bring a hand full of sizes and you'll be fine. You may be able to pull the alternator off without removing the fan. However, this vehicle had a California spec alternator which has a larger housing.

The long bolt on the underside of the alternator, is it reverse-threaded or does it have regular threads. I have been pushing and whacking the wrench with a hammer but it wont budge. Erick Ornelas Start by installing a new belt and test the alternator. If you're getting good voltage you're in good shape. Regarding your question if it is a similar process, the motor in your car is different. However, the principle stays the same. Disconnect the connector, remove the bolts that hold the alternator to the motor and install a new one. Good luck

I only need to replace the pulley. Do you know where I could find one? I'm not sure about the type or anything about it. At this point, I'm thinking my best bet would be to go to a junkyard and find one to pull a part off of.

Hi David. Your correct. Your best bet is finding one at a junkyard. Good luck! Cheers

I will have one on ebay, I use this alternator for an 87 subaru (1994 maxima -not 1997) but pulley is the same.

Sorry, man, I already took care of it. You're a bit late; I would have loved to have had this a while ago, though.

If this is your first time doing this kind of job I would say give yourself three hours to be on the safe side.

I have a question. How did you remove the bolt holding the alternator. I am currently removing my old one but the bolt will not come all the way out. It gets stuck on the frame of the car and wont come all the way out. Pls Help!!!

erik wynn I'm assuming you mean the long bolt? I did this years ago so I don't remember precisely how I removed it but if you're having a tough time I would remove the top bolt as well that way you can move the alternator with your hand and by adjusting the angle the bolt will come out.

CarsNToys Thanks for your help. Unfortunately I had to drop the whole engine to pull the bolt out. Didn't want to but i did.

So heres my problem im trying to replace my alternator but for whatever reason the electrical connection (which u skip and pre loosen) seems to be completely different from the rest of the push clip release sensors. I cannot push it in i cant pull the tab forward either and i feel like im going to break it. how do i get that sensor off the alternator?

My nephew has lost the bolts to his alternator and we can not find any information on the size of the bolts so we can replace them. If anyone has this info would you please post it. Thanks so much.
