I use 20lb superbraid. I think it would be difficult to use mono as it is too thick. The water is over 100ft deep here and there is often quite a current running. I cast out and let the lure get to the bottom letting line out. It takes about 1 minute to drop to the bottom.
i use 20lb mainline and a 5ft trace of 25lb flourocarbon and can lift pollack of 3lb straight up and onto the rocks on my 11ft 6 bass rod, anything bigger i'll use a drop net unless your fishing near the water level where you can grab it
what breaking strain does you're line need to be to catch Pollock of the shore.

I use 20lb super braid and a 2ft 40lb trace of fluorocarbon leader. 40lb is overkill but is more resistant to nicks off barnacles, sharp rocks etc.

There used to be PROPER fish like seatrout and salmon around Skye.
The commercial nets and especially the salmon farms have destroyed most of that.
