Hunting the WI firearms opener on public land. The setup is on a small hardwood island surrounded by wet ground. After a windy and uneventful opening day, the weather was perfect the next morning. 20 degrees and no wind allowed for crunchy ground and fantastic hearing across the marsh. I hunted out of a hang on tree stand about 16 feet up, in a tree that I picked out in the dark that morning (hence why there's a branch right above my head. I couldn't set the stand any lower due to another branch).
this is quite possibly the best audio ive ever heard. Good job!
I really enjoyed that video! I wish I could hear the deer coming like you! It must be the areas I hunt but it’s very rare for me to ever hear a deer. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Congrats on the doe. That was an awesome setup. Watching your videos has me thinking outside the box for my pressured ohio public lands.
You’re one of the only left handed hunter I’ve seen in a while I’m right hands but shoot like I’m left handed
Love the Vertigo Grey camo!!
great video and great strategy! hunting only public land all my life its always a good feeling when a plan comes together and you connect with a nice deer.
Nice Savage you got there, love that cam pattern
Great video Garrett. Congrats!
Way to go!! That's awesome. What a beautiful day to be out deer hunting
very clear and crisp videos. thanks for sharing.
Good Job! Those Rode Microphones are awesome!!!!
hey DIY....always like your stuff...keep it coming
Love that sound of the unaware deer approaching.
I love it when I hear ice breaking, especially where I hunt because I know it's deer. No man in his right mind would try to walk through the swamp I hunt haha
Always enjoy your videos, you keep it real - that's exactly what is needed across the board for hunt films. Nicely done.
Thanks! I enjoy your videos as well.
Lefties rule! Great video, and great deer. Congrats, bro.
Great job. I've been watching your videos lately, they're great. keep it up!

+hoshnasi Sony FDR-AX100 and Rode Videomic Pro R.
Awesome Footage!
+PKD OUT Thanks! I really like your short film.
Where do you hunt? We kinda switch between Adams County and Mountain, WI. Hunted in Wild Rose a few times as well. Deer population was up 40% this year. Good thing considering all the winter kill we've had the past few years. Really windy this year though, and second day was so windy that not many deer were moving around (Only one person in our group saw a flash of a tail. Opening day everyone saw something and that when all the kills took place. Busy first day). Out of our group of 7 we got 3 bucks and 2 does this year. I didn't see anything personally, although there is a HUGE buck I've been tracking the past couple years where I usually put my ladder stand. This year he came up behind me and couldn't have been more than 50 yards from me. I never saw him but I sure as hell heard him. He is king of the woods and he knows it, and gives no fucks making a bunch of racket moving around. When I got out of my stand near dark, I found a huge fresh scrape right around where I heard on the path to my stand, close to my stand behind me and out of my firing view. It wasnt but an hour old. Bastard was toying with me. He left some prints in the scrape and boy lemme tell you... This is a big ass deer. Huge toe spread and massive scrapes. Friggin Bambi's grandpa hanging out back in there. I'm going up for another 2 weekends and I'm hoping to see him. After 2 years of tracking him I'm hoping to finally get lucky.
awesome hunting bro.. keep it up
Nice video as always. I noticed you're not using your rock climbing harness with the connection point up front, but what appears to be a standard treestand harness with the connection point on the back? Why the switch?
+varnco I picked up the HSS harness this year because the city hunts wouldn't let me use the rock harness. The rock harness works really well with my SitDrag saddle setup. I tied on a dump pouch for carrying my ropes and keep the D loops of the SitDrag loosely tied to the harness. So essentially, if I'm hunting with the Lone Wolf hang on, it's easier to just grab the HSS harness than unrig the rock harness from the SitDrag setup. I've been about 50/50 so far on public. Half of the hunts I use the hang on and HSS harness. The other half of the hunts I use the rock harness/SitDrag with the saddle platform.
Very cool video!! Clean kill!
hey that was a good hunt i know how it is to try and pull it off on video, it's hard!!!!!!, good work (:
what county did u hunt in? i hunted in Pierce
imVanitys America
WHERE ARE ALL MY WISCONSINITES
Right here
That's an nice doe bud keep up the good work
Nice video and good shooting! 👊
Great vid as always. What rifle are you shooting? Digging the Kryptek highlander pattern on it. It would match my Obsession bow perfectly haha.
+flinginairos Savage Axis 30-06. I did the camo with spray paint and a kryptek stencil kit from ebay.
Where in Wisconsin? Awesome video!
Congrats brown it's down. Don't see a lot of lefty shooters
Nice video.
You've done a great job. Do you always 'meep' at your deer or only if they're moving?
+Bill Mello Only if they're moving. I didn't really have to with the rifle but it's a habit from bowhunting and makes for an easier shot.
Great video. Is that the predator camo ambush jacket? I've yet to find something that keeps me warm late season bow hunting. I would be interested in your opinion. Thanks and keep it up!
+Leif Birnbaum No this is an old Native Species jacket (discontinued sub brand of Scent Lok) with the Vertigo Gray pattern. I'm actually selling it to someone just starting out and have a First Lite Woodbury in Fusion camo on order.
+DIY Sportsman I chose the Woodbury over the Sanctuary because it should get me through more of the season than the sanctuary, and I can layer underneath. I am using the Sanctuary bibs in this video. They're pretty nice.
I noticed that you weren't using your fourth arrow camera arm. Do you like the one in the video better?
+Chris Powell I was using the Fourth Arrow arm in the video. I covered it in Stealth Strips so it's camoed.
10-4 Thanks for the reply.
Were the deer as loud in person as they were on camera? Nice work GP!
+Matthew Osten Yes, it was so crisp and quiet that morning. I could here people talking in normal voices hundreds of yards away. Great weather to be in the woods!
I shot an 8 in rusk today
Good stuff
Are you not using the rock climbing harness anymore?
812 Media I use the rock harness with my saddle setup, and the standard harness for the hang on. It got to be too much adding and removing the dump pouch and paracord loops from the harness every time I wanted to switch from saddle to hang on. I already had the regular harness, so I just decided to wear them separately.
What part of Wisconsin do you hunt? Im also in Wisconsin about 30 minutes south east of Green Bay. Good vid by the way.
Martin Scheuer Jr. He mentioned Homstead in Western Wisconsin
Nice spot
DIYSPORTSMAN when do you know when to make that mauh noise?
+Mega Mang As soon as the deer is at a good angle and stepping into an opening, and I'm ready to shoot.
shoot wish I new that earlier, I missed my 1st deer today. Thanks though and keep them vids coming
its lovely
That's some fine eating, congrats!
good spot
Hey I'm just starting out recording my hunts and all i have is a GoPro what camera do you use and what would you recommend???? please get back to me
+James Sarsfield I am using a Sony FDR-AX100. It's tough to recommend a single camera without more knowledge about price/goals, etc.
DIY Sportsman thanks
If you're not sure if a piece of state land in Mn allows hunting how do you find that info out?
+Mark Fossum the MN DNR has an interactive map showing all of the WMAs. You can hunt on certain state or national forests, outlined by the regulations, National Wildlife Refuges (which you can find through the Fish and Wildlife Service or Google search). They also have some Scenic Riverway land along the St Croix river. Some counties allow you to hunt on tax forfeited land (you'd have to research the specific county) or might have special Conservatories. I might be forgetting some but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
DIY Sportsman Thank you a lot! Love your page. Great info and good feedback.
man that day was cold
We got nothing like this in Florida, no Doves season only bucks, we have to go into a lottery to be able to hunt most WMA's due to a limited Quota Hunts, I so far I purchased my hunting Lic, WMA's permits, Turkeys permits ext, and I haven't be awarded a single Quota permit for hunting, you can only take like 1-2 deer per year if you are lucky to and they allow you, hogs are the only ones and they are mostly nocturnal, what a shame...
Ruben Garcia meanwhile pythons eat them at free will....yeah nice system in Florida.
May I ask how long this took?
Nice job. I just shot a doe yesterday.
looks like we have ourselves another animal activist idiot.
Great Video what rifle and caliber did you use ?
+Guitar Dave Savage Axis 30-06
Awesome hunt! Two questions. What was that material you covered your carabiners with? Second why were you hooked into that metal devise as opposed to the prusik knot?
+MasterGhilieman I covered the carabiners with Stealth Strips. This is the same tether that I use for my saddle, which has both a metal ascender and a prusik. Only one is needed to clip into for the safety harness. Often I'll clip into both carabiners just for the extra safety factor, though I'm putting together a dedicated tether that I can use just for this harness.
Thanks man. Always pick up a few ideas from your videos!
What kind of rope, sizes and lengths did you use for the safety strap? They are like 25-30 bucks at basspro and I figure i could make a better one myself or even 2 for that price.
I bought 100ft of climbing rope and I made 3 lines for 35 bucks.
P Edwards For the rope on mine I used Bluewater Assaultline 7/16". I think around 11 feet, but you could get by with less. The knots take up a lot of rope. For my prusik cord I used Petzl Vector 8mm rescue cord but any rope advertised as a prusik cord would work. They are designed to handle friction better.
Wow nice
U guys hunt on Sunday too??
Yes, you can hunt every day from season open to season end during the 9-day rifle in WI.
Hey man. Im just starting out and i would like to make some hunting videos... the camera i get has to be around $320 or less... any recommendations?
I also have a gopro btw
Is this in central wi?
Not asking for details but Can I ask what county this was in?
Aaron Cousins America
Was in western Wisconsin he Mentioned Homestead
Did you stay in the stand all day? ab what time did you shoot the deer?
+First Bite Bassin' I sat all day Saturday, then these came in about an hour or so after sunrise on Sunday if I remember right.
ahh okay thanks man! nice kill!
What county is this in
Is that a Sony AX100 video camera you using?
Jack Beans Yes it is. I just bought it this fall and have been pretty pleased so far. I'm filming everything in 4k for the extra ability to crop during editing.
How close to a house were you.Had to bw close.
+newyota1 Probably around 1/4 mile according to the map.
That is a good mic!
What Rifle are you using?
Savage axis 30-06
Are you a left handed shooter ?
Yes.
Nice video...must not be too deep in the woods since I can hear dogs barking.
MegaYangman ig it was a dog drive bc that was public land , I think
The dog must be very close lol
awesome
is that a lefty rifle? i feel your pain lol
what kinda stand doesnt look like your lone wolf!
+Michael Meyer Lone Wolf Assault.
DIY Sportsman I was hunting in Door County Wisconsin and I only saw one buck and it was the biggest one I have seen it right and front of me about 15 ft or so but I couldn't get a go shot at him but I got a buck the youth hunt this year
Meat in the freezer! Wisconsin hunter myself, our group went 4 for 9 with 3 bucks.
Bullets and BJJ Yeah our group got 3 bucks as well. We had two doe tags in our group as well, and filled those. Derr population is up 40% this year.
What does "4 for 9" mean?
Just wondering what part of WI are you in?
+The Weekend Homestead Western part of the state.
DIY Sportsman county atleast with my name im guessing you can get near where I am located
we are up in the Hayward WI area
No rock climbing harness?!
+TopwaterblZt 247 Not on this hunt. These days I'm either hunting out of a New Tribe saddle or using the standard harness in the Lone Wolf.
i rifle hunted for the first time. i usually archery hunt and it was the first day. didnt see anything.
Keyes and Nebbins yeah I'm gonna go rifle hunting next year cause I'll be 11
Be careful with your Safety Harness...
U can't hunt on Sunday can u ?? Go back to the beginning and Liston closely
+Outdoorsman 35 You can hunt on Sundays in Wisconsin. I think there only something like 11 states that don't allow it in some capacity.
In the past some communities in Michigan prohibit hunting on Sunday, but I think they're relaxing some of those rules due to limitations of time for full time employment.
Yea, they're actually considering that here in Maine allowing us to hunt on Sundays. Too bad our State biologists too stupid to realize that are deer management is hurting. I wish they would consider doing a point limit and stop giving up doe tags for a while. They say it's healthy but I've never seen or heard so minimal in all the years I've hunted.
Outdoorsman 35 you can
@@rickydilemma6044 I also hunt maine, take 3 weeks off to due so bc of the concerns you mentioned and many others. It can be boring at times going weeks with out seeing a good buck. Good luck
I love deer hunting pics if you can can you send me some deer hunting pics please I love too look at them and keep them on my phone
what gun are you useing
Tennessee Bow-hunter Savage Axis in 30-06.
DIY Sportsman nice doe as well
nice
The dog barking you don’t hear that in most hunting videos
Samantha Jennings on public lands they echo through the valleys in Western Wisconsin. You might have a small isolated farm tucked in the hills. And dogs barks from these farms may bounce off the valley walls....sounds closer than they sometimes are. Deer here get use to the sound, and doesn't seem to bother them.
Meat in the Freezer Baby!!!!!! Nice Video and Excellent Sound Quality. "crash crash crash" hahaha they were loud. She looks Very nice and Yummy!!
Does Wisconsin have huge bucks?
Alec Lemieux More Boone and Crockett entries than any other state since 2010.
Hi my name is Kevin I'm 15 years old
The deers were a couple, you should not kill it...
