    Hunting the WI firearms opener on public land. The setup is on a small hardwood island surrounded by wet ground. After a windy and uneventful opening day, the weather was perfect the next morning. 20 degrees and no wind allowed for crunchy ground and fantastic hearing across the marsh. I hunted out of a hang on tree stand about 16 feet up, in a tree that I picked out in the dark that morning (hence why there's a branch right above my head. I couldn't set the stand any lower due to another branch).

    Where do you hunt? We kinda switch between Adams County and Mountain, WI. Hunted in Wild Rose a few times as well. Deer population was up 40% this year. Good thing considering all the winter kill we've had the past few years. Really windy this year though, and second day was so windy that not many deer were moving around (Only one person in our group saw a flash of a tail. Opening day everyone saw something and that when all the kills took place. Busy first day). Out of our group of 7 we got 3 bucks and 2 does this year. I didn't see anything personally, although there is a HUGE buck I've been tracking the past couple years where I usually put my ladder stand. This year he came up behind me and couldn't have been more than 50 yards from me. I never saw him but I sure as hell heard him. He is king of the woods and he knows it, and gives no fucks making a bunch of racket moving around. When I got out of my stand near dark, I found a huge fresh scrape right around where I heard on the path to my stand, close to my stand behind me and out of my firing view. It wasnt but an hour old. Bastard was toying with me. He left some prints in the scrape and boy lemme tell you... This is a big ass deer. Huge toe spread and massive scrapes. Friggin Bambi's grandpa hanging out back in there. I'm going up for another 2 weekends and I'm hoping to see him. After 2 years of tracking him I'm hoping to finally get lucky.

    Nice video as always. I noticed you're not using your rock climbing harness with the connection point up front, but what appears to be a standard treestand harness with the connection point on the back? Why the switch?

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  7 лет назад

      +varnco I picked up the HSS harness this year because the city hunts wouldn't let me use the rock harness. The rock harness works really well with my SitDrag saddle setup. I tied on a dump pouch for carrying my ropes and keep the D loops of the SitDrag loosely tied to the harness. So essentially, if I'm hunting with the Lone Wolf hang on, it's easier to just grab the HSS harness than unrig the rock harness from the SitDrag setup. I've been about 50/50 so far on public. Half of the hunts I use the hang on and HSS harness. The other half of the hunts I use the rock harness/SitDrag with the saddle platform.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  7 лет назад +1

      +Leif Birnbaum No this is an old Native Species jacket (discontinued sub brand of Scent Lok) with the Vertigo Gray pattern. I'm actually selling it to someone just starting out and have a First Lite Woodbury in Fusion camo on order.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  7 лет назад +1

      +DIY Sportsman I chose the Woodbury over the Sanctuary because it should get me through more of the season than the sanctuary, and I can layer underneath. I am using the Sanctuary bibs in this video. They're pretty nice.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  7 лет назад

      812 Media I use the rock harness with my saddle setup, and the standard harness for the hang on. It got to be too much adding and removing the dump pouch and paracord loops from the harness every time I wanted to switch from saddle to hang on. I already had the regular harness, so I just decided to wear them separately.

    If you're not sure if a piece of state land in Mn allows hunting how do you find that info out?

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  7 лет назад

      +Mark Fossum the MN DNR has an interactive map showing all of the WMAs. You can hunt on certain state or national forests, outlined by the regulations, National Wildlife Refuges (which you can find through the Fish and Wildlife Service or Google search). They also have some Scenic Riverway land along the St Croix river. Some counties allow you to hunt on tax forfeited land (you'd have to research the specific county) or might have special Conservatories. I might be forgetting some but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

    We got nothing like this in Florida, no Doves season only bucks, we have to go into a lottery to be able to hunt most WMA's due to a limited Quota Hunts, I so far I purchased my hunting Lic, WMA's permits, Turkeys permits ext, and I haven't be awarded a single Quota permit for hunting, you can only take like 1-2 deer per year if you are lucky to and they allow you, hogs are the only ones and they are mostly nocturnal, what a shame...

    Awesome hunt! Two questions. What was that material you covered your carabiners with? Second why were you hooked into that metal devise as opposed to the prusik knot?

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  7 лет назад +1

      +MasterGhilieman I covered the carabiners with Stealth Strips. This is the same tether that I use for my saddle, which has both a metal ascender and a prusik. Only one is needed to clip into for the safety harness. Often I'll clip into both carabiners just for the extra safety factor, though I'm putting together a dedicated tether that I can use just for this harness.

      What kind of rope, sizes and lengths did you use for the safety strap? They are like 25-30 bucks at basspro and I figure i could make a better one myself or even 2 for that price.

    • @MasterGhilieman
      @MasterGhilieman 7 лет назад

      I bought 100ft of climbing rope and I made 3 lines for 35 bucks.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  7 лет назад

      P Edwards For the rope on mine I used Bluewater Assaultline 7/16". I think around 11 feet, but you could get by with less. The knots take up a lot of rope. For my prusik cord I used Petzl Vector 8mm rescue cord but any rope advertised as a prusik cord would work. They are designed to handle friction better.

      +Outdoorsman 35 You can hunt on Sundays in Wisconsin. I think there only something like 11 states that don't allow it in some capacity.

      In the past some communities in Michigan prohibit hunting on Sunday, but I think they're relaxing some of those rules due to limitations of time for full time employment.

      Yea, they're actually considering that here in Maine allowing us to hunt on Sundays. Too bad our State biologists too stupid to realize that are deer management is hurting. I wish they would consider doing a point limit and stop giving up doe tags for a while. They say it's healthy but I've never seen or heard so minimal in all the years I've hunted.

      Samantha Jennings on public lands they echo through the valleys in Western Wisconsin. You might have a small isolated farm tucked in the hills. And dogs barks from these farms may bounce off the valley walls....sounds closer than they sometimes are. Deer here get use to the sound, and doesn't seem to bother them.
