Man the last conversation between Lincoln and Sal is some of the best writing and well preformed acting I have ever seen in a video game. Its somehow the perfect balance of stone cold and heart wrenching. Two very very broken men and sworn enemies just enjoying one last drink before the end of their war.

      Agreed.
I think the genius of it really stems from the (somewhat over-romanticized) idea we have about the mafia. Move on a made man, you’re dead. Move on a man’s family, you’re dead. Move on a superior, you’re dead.
And the ending plays into that idea, instead of depicting these people as absolutely amoral and powerhungry mustache-twirling villains, both Sal and Lincoln play by the rules.
Sal was the “big bad” until he fucked over someone he shouldn’t have. And it’s good to see an antagonist that realizes they’d fucked up. In a dog-eat-dog world, there’s always a bigger dog and Sal had his reasons - with those reasons gone (killed) there was no point in fighting.

And the variety of them was great too. Faster Baby had a Blaxpolitation-inspired stick it to the man theme, Stones Unturned was a conspiracy-themed pure action one and Sign of the Times was actual horror.
I already enjoyed Mafia III despite the repetition, but the DLCs truly elevated that game to one of my favorites. Hope they can match that level with the upcoming game.

The problem with Mafia 3 is how the developers had to jump many hoops to develop it from:
    - Translating the engine from Czech to English
    - Developing new technologies alongside the game
    - Take2 suddenly jumping in and only giving them 2 years to develop it
    - Development hell that landed the project on Hangar 13's doorstep

Not sure why older games with game mechanics like that are so rare these days. I loved decorating my mansion. I do wish the Tiger was actually in the game and it could follow you around. Yes some of the tasks were repetitive I agree but the game is built on some rock solid mechanics. The writing in the cutscenes is truly excellent and compelling. One thing I noticed is that the scenes playing after the capos are killed varies by the order you do them. Sal will always call Galante after the first one is dead, but it still makes a difference. I chose Tommy first leading to one of the most humanizing scenes for Sal and Giorgi, where it's made very clear how much Tommy's dead affects Sal. In another version Giorgi will be up the moon after having killed Olivia with Sal trying to calm him and bring him back to the facts. The killer always appears after the second capo, where Sal will tell him about the dead capo. And the third? It's always Sal and Giorgi angrily panickin with the capo being mentioned on the side as yet another set back to endure.
I don't mind Maguire never meeting Lincoln. In fact I even like the idea of Maguire being obsessed with this case, while Lincoln doesn't even know about him. The scene, where he is paranoid about hearing Lincoln's ghost in his attic adds to this and becomes weirdly funny. "Oh no, Lincoln is haunting me now!" "Haunting who?". It also fits, because Lincoln was done with his rampage once Maguire finally got in his tail. It's only a shame that Nicki appears in just one documentary cutscene. I wish there were more of those to see how she interprets things so long after they happened and how it affected her view of Lincoln.
I also like the detail of Vito not only being the best underboss for New Bordeaux to take over, but also being the most professionell one. He had been leading racket slong enough to be experienced. He is also much more patient than the other two. While Cassandra and Burke will practically scream and demand more territory after not getting one twice, Vito will chalk it up to "yeah, yeah I'm the carpetbagger from Empire Bay" and expect it the third time. Additionally during cutscenes he always acts proper and professional and keeps his cool. In short: I like Vito's protrayal here. He let go of his hotheadedness and became a proper Empire Bay gangster, who knows how the game works.
The world feels very underutilized unfortunetaly. I remember being in the bayou once, capturing a racist shop owner and practically dragged him out of his shop, walking to the water. He just despawned. Whilst carrying him. It was... a bummer. New Bourdeaux has all the things that could make it memorable as a game world. The inherent racism and classism in the police as shown in their response time differences and how they ALWAYS seem to keep an eye on Lincoln if he is close. Segregation affecting where Lincoln can go. Delray Hollow suffering from the effects of a hurricane and no one caring. The 60s atmosphere and news broadcasts, including Remi Duvall's radio show. It's there. But you barely see it and that's a shame.
Something I liked to do was to show up with the same car when commiting some crime. I usually picked the upper middle class car, painted it yellow (I didn't want to change the colour of Lincolns story car, it wouldn't fit with his character) and always used that whenever I started wrecking rackets. I liked this idea of making it a calling card of sorts. Gangsters nervously whispering about that damn yellow car that always appears before hell gets loose, maybe even crapping their pants once it stops in front of THEIR racket.
Apologies for the long comment, but I wanted to air out some thoughts about this. I liked the game and didn't find it as repetetitive as it was often said. The gunplay feels very good, which makes it easier to deal with the racket system being almost the entire game. Great video, keep it up. :)

*And here's the kicker, at one point they DID fix the achievements by 1.09, but when they released the next Gen upgrade for the game, it actually made the game worse, not only performance wise but also undid some of stuff the earlier patches fixed, and once again the achievements were broken AGAIN, and for some reason they never bothered to fix them again.*
*They're not impossible to get, but you have to do them without exiting the game, crashing, or turning off your console, or else the in game counter resets and breaks the achievements, sometimes requiring you to new game all over again. I always liked how the order in which you killed off the underbosses would show off different cutscenes, or how you could leave Marcano to end everything himself if you didn’t want to throw him out of the window (which also has different animations based on where you attack him). As for the ending and how to choose a certain underboss to rule, it would depend both on loyalty and the amount of money the underboss makes by the end of the game if I remember correctly.

The game drags a little here and there but the thing that really got me through it was the characters Lincoln, Donavan and of course Vito returning. I just really dug their journeys and dialogue between each other throughout the story.
Also, was I only one who thought Steppenwolf’s song - desperation was put in this game to relate to Lincoln’s story specifically? I always had to listen to it every time it came on when driving. It just fits so damn well.

i think the first cutscene with giorgi and lincoln proves that at least from lincoln's side he really thought of him as a friend as he has the same smile he had with ellis and sammy. circumstantial sure but the whole vibe was really one of genuine friendship built through being youth shitheadary. and i think the canon ending is the rule together one, based on what maguire says at the beggining, the fact that lincoln was a "new breed of mobster". If all lincoln did was go on his revenge rampage he wouldnt be called a mobster, more like a rambo figure. Also the "new breed" part seems to also indicate that he ruled withouth the usual way of doing things for the mob, like how sal was refferenced to killing anyone he deemed a threat wether real or imagined, which, coincidentally is what donovan proposes at the end with killing the underbosses "to be sure" thus really being little difference between how lincoln would have handled himself opposed to sal. The whole maguire being adamant that despite his current standing lincoln is a murderer also implies that people viewed him positively/favorably womething which wouldnt make sense if he walked away. Also the documentary is made sometimes in the 2000's at the very least, 40 years after the events and centers little on anything else than lincolns actions, giving it an expose kinda feeling, something which again, wouldnt be neccesary if the sole thing he would be remembered by would be his rampage in the 60's. You dont need to prove that someone isnt who they present themselves as IF the only info you got on them is they killed hundreds and dismantled the mob in new bordeaux, even withouth clear evidence it would still be an educated guess. Plus the whole going away ending seems to be more bitter than sweet as he still loses contact with father james, as one way postcards do not represent any meaningful way of communication, and he eventually goes back to being involved in a criminal organization, one that would be even more bloody than the mob. And the whole losing sight of his morals is hypocritical in my opinion as during the game you can clearly see there are different ways to do crime, meaning prostitution bad yes i agree but prostitution through getting people intentionally addicted to heroin worse and lets not forget the slave auctions. Point is even if he wouldnt get involved himself in that, whatever criminal activity already proved itself profitable will be one people will always try to recreate again and again.

Maguire did say that Lincoln was given a bad hand in life, but that doesn't excuse him from all the mayhem he caused in the city. I don't think he's corrupt, more like a proudful guy who couldn't not accept that a black man destroyed the Italian mob and pretty much rebrand it to his own way.
Kind of like Frank Lucas, a real gangster who operated without impunity because the law and the other mob families underestimated him for the color of his skin around 1960 to 1970 the same time period that mafia 3 takes place.

One of the more interesting things is that Sal will call Leo three different ways depending on which capo goes down first, same goes for his reach out for the drug dealer and his last stand. I find the Tommy version of the last stand to be the one that feels most canon as he cares little for Olivia, not as much for Lou, but Tommy is the one he cares for the most, trying to get him to be the one legit Marcano out there, but Tommy says no and goes to Havana instead.

The game had so much potential. I had a lot of fun with it, but after a certain point it just became repetitive as hell.
And as Black Southerner (Texan🤠🇨🇱) one thing that bugged me throughout the whole game was that they got white people's accents right but not black people's. Black folks in South Louisiana have such a unique, distinct accent that's immediately recognizable but they decided to give everyone a black Mississippi accent. Every time I heard a super deep rural Mississippi drawl, I had to remind myself that New Bordeaux, LA is not New Orleans, LA and suspend my disbelief.

Yes, it's repetitive AF, and the gameplay loop is fully experienced after 2 hours.
But the basics of that loop, the shooting and the driving (especially if set on simulation) are so well done that have the power to carry you all the way to the end.
I didn't care that the objectives were repetitive, but just having to drive all the way there feeling like Steve McQueen in Bullit, and shooting my way through enemies like Jonh Wick was more than enough to sing 50+ hours into this game and complete it.

    • @TheDiner50
      @TheDiner50 17 дней назад

For all the flaws of Mafia 3? And there are many. Mafia 3 has one thing going for it. Got it installed and boot it up and play only say 1h at a time. Spanning the game over months removes the repetitive issue. And with so many parts being shallow and unfinished? It makes it rather easy to quickly get in and then quit for a week.
And I have one more rule when playing Mafia 3. I play it like Mafia 1. Only my pistol can be carried concealed. And try and avoid silencers or upgrades of any sort. Only really taking the mandatory and aim accuracy upgrades. Not even bulletproof tires.
By forcing myself to carry two handed weapons around? With limited ammo? Like it sucks that you can not drop weapons as you want to on the ground. Yet, I manage to force myself to pick up weapons on the ground. If I want a shotgun going into combat? Then Licon is going to carry that shotgun to the car -> Driver over there, get out, and walk with a shotgun around the public. And try and avoid running everywhere. Or 'speed run' everything. Taking my sweet time. Crossing the map and doing multiple districts at the same time. Try and keep some sense of traffic laws. And yet going completely speed daemon and using the car as a weapon too. Limit the amount of vehicle calls, etc, etc, etc.

I have mixed views of this game. Driving was decent, shooting was too basic and gameplay loop was almost as bad as Ubisoft games. But the story, characters and voice acting were super good. The onyl character I didn't like was Cassandra. She was too whiney, played the race card when I didn't give her territory she wanted, constantly talked down to Lincoln and just an overall annoyance. Other than that the rest of the characters were amazing. I just wish the gameplay was as good as the story and dialogue was. It nailed a realistic depiction of being black in the 1960s south. It felt nature and real and not forced like a lot of modern games write it. The music is of course amazing as well. Though I mainly liked listening to the talk and news on the radio referencing real life historic events and stuff. I loved the radio in Mafia 2 and how it mentioned they discovered unfiltered cigs were bad and how they believed a filter would be safe, how a home TV became a thing and had 5 channels to watch. I always enjoyed things like that. I'd give the game a hard 7. Maybe realistically a 6.5. Wish the gameplay was more like an improved mafia 2 type thing.

I played Mafia III for the first time earlier this year and generally had a good time, the core gameplay is very solid, but I feel that the game's best aspects are diluted by the racket system.
The DLC shines in part because the three stories completely do away with the filler content and provide tight, focused experiences that go straight to the point and play to the game's strengths. That and the second DLC has more Donovan, what more could you ask for but more time seeing him and Lincoln interact together?

I’m just going to say it. The district takeover system was fun and creative. Yes it could be repetitive but it never felt monotonous. The satisfying gameplay and soundtrack was enough for it to stay fun all the way through for me. I thought it was satisfying and immersive to methodically take over each district from Marciano slowly and deliberately as the story unfolds. I also liked the freedom you had in making choices that actually would have consequences later on, as well as the ability to take them in any order you’d prefer from the start of the game. I never understood the hate that it got. Maybe I’m alone in this but I thought it blended very well with the story.

I recall playing the game day 01 and I enjoyed the story overall. Loved the setting and how unafraid it was to be true to the setting with even having a disclaimer before beginning the game. My biggest issue was how the racket missions and loyalty missions were essentially the same with all 3 subordinates. The worst part is how you can do them at your own pace without having to trigger the mission and then the story will still make you do it again regardless if you already did it so it felt monotonous. They should have had territory take overs story locked and side content with members of each gang you work with to further develop the gang and their reasoning of why they are even there.

the gunplay wasn't very classy like in mafia 2 for example
the game apparently felt like far cry, very repetitive with a great story potential
mafia was supposed to be our gem, our videogame heritage and don't get me wrong, it still is
but Mafia III was quite a let down localized voice acting for our native language was missing and not representing the lifestyle of a mafioso enough in the eyes of series veterans
but it's nice that someone enjoys something that most hated on and puts a brighter light on it
    take care, fuzzy

I understand that this game upset a lot of people for being either not too Mafia enough or for the repetitive gameplay and I accepted that but when you look past all that you can really see where this game shines, the story is great along with its setting and music, just top notch and the voice acting? Who ever was in charge for the VA in this and Mafia Definitive Edition deserves huge raise it’s very well done. That’s being said they coulda more by adding linear missions but keeping the side missions cause the gameplay is still satisfying, more things to do outside the story and added a few more things like multiple saves, fast travel cause the map is kinda big and a new game plus for better replay ability but overall it’s an enjoyable game if you can get passed the flaws.

Mafia 3 somewhat reminds me of Outer Worlds - OW was frankly a pain in the arse in it's first level (Emerald Vale) and so grindy that you just stopped, ignoring the rest of the missions and frankly the wider story. Mafia 3 has a great story... if you cut out all the annoying parts of taking over districts which amount to "go here, destroy this", while the boss fights were generally well written and engaging from invading a hotel, to blowing up a quarry and slaughtering the KKK.
It's a shame how often developers pad things out with meaningless content just to claim "We've XXX hours of gameplay", it's the real world equivalent of Preston Garvey saying "I've heard about another settlement that needs your help".
