    Arthur Mercante is one the best referees ever in boxing he is impartial and unbiased says the fght was dead evem going into the fifteenth round. Norton's corner told hm, he had the fight won, he had it in his vest pocket and not to take an unncessary chances. Norton then coasted in the fifteenth round, the pivotal round of the fight, allowed Ali to take the play away from him for at two minutes and fifteen seconds. Norton then came on in the last forty seconds but was too late and not eough to overcome his deficit for the first two minutes, Norton lost the last round and thus ;lost the fight, just as what happened in the second fight. when Alt took the last round there.

      Mercante actually had Ali ahead going into the 15th round. His final score was 8-6-1, meaning that before the 15th round it would have been 7-6-1 on his scorecard.

    I’ve scored this fight several times over the years, and I’ve never once had Ali winning the fight. Per the last time I scored it, I had it 145-140 (10-5) for Norton.
    Both guys got in their share of swing rounds, and I could’ve plausibly had the fight scored as close as 143-142 (8-7) for Norton. Ali definitely had his moments when he was able to dance, jab, and land quick straight rights, but overall Norton landed the cleaner, harder, more effective, more telling blows throughout the fight. He got in on numerous occasions to land hard rights up top as well as some good body blows. His defense was on point too as he ducked, blocked, caught, and swatted punches away with his cross-armed defense.
    Ali himself even admitted he lost!

    • @Mr.Be.Realistic
      @Mr.Be.Realistic 10 дней назад

      But the question is did Ken Norton land more punches than Ali landed? I don’t think he did and in my opinion the that lands the most punches and gets hit the least should always win the fight.
      Because if you go by who lands the hardest punches then most of the time it’s no need for the 2 fighters to fight because you already know who is going to land the hardest punches.
      We know that George Forman is always going to land harder punches than his opponents.
      We know that Mike Tyson is always going to land harder punches than his opponent before they step in the ring. So in my opinion the name of the game is hit and not get hit and the fighter that landed the most punches should always win.

    • @corytclark
      @corytclark 10 дней назад +1

      @@Mr.Be.Realistic it’s not about who lands more.
      I mean don’t get me wrong, if 1 guy lands 500 punches and the other guy only lands 50, there’s a good chance I’m going with the guy who landed 500 punches.
      But that scenario aside, it’s not about who lands more. And it’s not so much about who’s a harder puncher either. For me, my biggest scoring criteria is clean and effective punching….who’s landing the clearer, cleaner shots? Whose shots are more effective? Are his shots backing up or staggering his opponent? Are they snapping his head back? Those are the biggest things that I look for

    • @corytclark
      @corytclark 10 дней назад

      @@Mr.Be.Realistic and to answer your question, yes, Norton DID land more punches than Ali; 82 more punches, to be exact. Sure Ali was busier than Norton, but Ken was landing the harder, more effective shots, he was landing more often, and he was much more accurate.

    • @Demonizer5134
      @Demonizer5134 10 дней назад +2

      A lot of Norton's shots landed either on Ali's elbows or his gloves. Ali had masterful defense throughout most of the fight. Ali landed more clean, stiff jabs and crosses, and even some solid uppercuts from time to time as well.

    • @corytclark
      @corytclark 10 дней назад

      @@Demonizer5134 yeah I’m sure Ali blocked a lot of shots….not every shot lands. The shots that WERE landing by Norton, however, were harder, cleaner, and clearer than Ali’s shots.
      Norton too put on a decent defensive display as well. With his unique stance and cross-armed guard, he was able to duck, slip, block, and catch a lot of Ali’s shot. That’s why Norton had a significantly higher connect percentage.

  • @josephrobinson5452

    Ken couldn't match hand speed with Ali and that put Ali out in front in this fight. I also noticed that when Ali started dancing, Ken wasn't able to get in the fight at all. Ali boxed his way to a win and did a great job out boxing Ken.

Kenny himself wrote a great piece about how and why he won this fight in his opinion, it is included in Taschen’s great “ALI” book, a must-have for any fight fan. He makes good arguments though I have it closer than him. Norton sure did more damage to Ali than vice versa, and Ali knew it. But he won on the judge’s scorecards, and that appeared to be enough reason to keep the Ali show with all his associates moving along.
