When women and children young and old use to waite till early hours of the morning thrilled to watch the most charismatic the one and only Muhammad Ali fight👌
I was 26 years-old, and I'll never forget this fight, or any of Ali's fights. He loved talking trash because he knew it would draw crowds of people wanting to see him get beat. Ali was probably the best thing to ever happen to boxing, and he helped save it because it really was dying. Man, Ali and his mouth injected new life into the sport like you'd never know unless you were there. Ali was also the greatest showman boxing has ever had or will have. He was a gentleman out of the ring, and performed many good deeds he didn't want known. For example, he heard on the news that a nursing home had burned down and people had no place to go. He told his manager to send them a check to build a new home for them, but he didn't want the public to know about it.
I met Check Wepner at a Golden Gloves event at an Armory in Elizabeth, NJ. He might have been a dirty fighter and a bleeder, but he was a gentleman out of the ring.
Marciano never lost. Greatest UNDEFEATED Boxer of all time. Joe Lewis...better than Ali....defended his Title 22 consecutive times....Also had his career inturrupted by WW2.....Ali lost to a cocaine addict named Leon Spinks. I'd rank Ali 5th best Heavyweight......Jack Johnson....circa 1910 was better.
I would definitely disqualify for hitting behind the head and more. Ali was damaged for life. All this hits are irreversible and a slow but for sure damage any brain. RIP Champ
The Rocky story somewhat parallels the story of Joe Frazier. Frazier worked in a meat warehouse in Philadelphia. His experience there hefting around sides of beef is credited with helping build up his strength to it eventual level.
I took my wheelchair bound brother to a book signing in Oxford where Ali was promoting his book, he was in a bad way at the time - they both were! My brother had no idea what he was there for. even though he was suffering, Ali stood up and shook my brother’s hand and gave him his book, such a beautiful memory of two beautiful people.
The fight that inspired Sly Stallone to write the Rocky movie...It's not about how hard you can hit but about how hard you get hit and get back up again or to those words.
The ref kept warning Ali about hitting Wepner in the back of the head but not Wepner when he started it. Also they didn't show that Wepner was standing on Ali's foot when Ali went down. It wasn't a knock down.
Respect. Shame on this fight to go on letting this man get hit behind the head. Ali later suffered the damages took from this fight. You don't see instant damage but later...is too late
I just can't imagine any other boxer going as many rounds as ali... he was a machine, and I can't avoid the comments he spoke of not following his own personal strength in his religion as a reason he didn't win on the times he wasn't victorious. Never heard excuses only I didn't do my part as a boxer and that's what makes him so great to me.
Maybe a couple might but most boxers simply do not workout nearly enough. Not saying they're not in shape, just not the shape boxer's use to train for.
Wepner was no more than a human punching bag during this entire fight. No defensive boxing skills to speak of, slower than molasses, stationary target, and a dirty fighter. But the man could take a punch, I'll give him that.
