Man, you are the only person who is talking about the elephant in the room. i am sure, we all appraciate your honesty and wisdom. Once i experienced DJ'ing with some stuff, my friends couldnt even recognize me. I was flying from one track to another because, it sounded well for me but , actually it destroyed all the mood in venue. What i can say about drugs is; using them is stealing happiness from your tomorrow, and if you are okay with that , you will get addicted. We all have such powerful memories to feed us , to boost us behind the decks. We just need to dig deeper and find the true source of our energy. Love you guys!
hear hear ! :) you know he is talking off experience.. that's why he can address it so beautifull and well. you have to been there, done that to know that it's not that what you needed :)
It took me getting off drugs and alcohol to become a DJ. Now, I get to provide the party. I have the opportunity to offer something rather than chasing the party and only taking from the situation. Being able to give instead of take has turned my world upside down in the best possible sense, and it's a gift of sobriety.
I started producing when I quit drinking, and while I absolutely have dependency issues still (weed) it's unrelated to the music. Making music IS the drug now.
@@zachhoy Man, it's been one vice at a time for me. Just got off cigarettes 8 days ago, and I've been sober for two years, so it's a journey. Kudos to you for even acknowledging weed can be like that.
@@bmercer99 happy to hear! It's been 4.5yrs for me and I don't miss alcohol at all. Cigarettes is another hard one I feel that, been there too! Good luck on your journey friend.
I stopped using drugs 25 years ago. Listening to dance music has never sounded the same since I stopped, however, dropping a hooj choon in a full club to a packed floor and watching the crowd erupt gave me a rush that no drug ever could. Controlling the crowd like a puppet master would send tingles down my spine. Playing b2b with Lisa Lashes in my residency was euphoric. My sets without drugs were far better, not because the drugs interfered with my mixing, but because I honed my skills over the years. Drugs were a huge part of my life. I loved them. LSD was my drug of choice, but I would consume any drug at any time. I loved them, and if I'm being honest, I still miss them sometimes. But I can tell you all, you don't need them to play a blinding set. I'm not anti-drugs. I just choose not to take them for fear of losing my sanity.
This is a good share. I keep it to thc and acid these days, and damn... acid makes me have audio experiences like nothing else can, so I respect that you stopped. I can get the sanity angle.
I got trapped in this loop a long time ago and it ended in all of my equipment tables, music , speakers, mixers all stolen because I wasn't aware enough to realize it. Never again the dancefloor is my molly
totally vibe with your experience, for me the music IS the drug, the dancefloor is the expression (or the dancefloor is the drug, that analogy works too)
22yrs sober, started DJing again when I first got sober. Just coming back to in again now and have advanced a ton in a yr. Couldn’t imagine in a million yrs being able to keep focused like I have this yr if I were using again
Your channel just levelled up hugely in my books. Ive recreationally used all sorts for years but my god I stay sober behind the decks as a rule of thumb. Its two hours of being present and for me the joy is watching my results sober. Also lets admit it... if youre doing technical stuff and precise mixing.... substacnes are not your friends they mess with your ears and your eyes. Appreciate your sagely advice - id hate to be navigating thi space at age 18.... (Im 45) id be making some poor life cesisions for sure.
I did some molly last night. It was a wonderful experience, and just as wonderful to listen to what you had to say here about cultivating those feelings while sober. MDMA is love, and you can cultivate that into yourself too! Wise words!
That’s the spirit. The drugs don’t give you anything you don’t already have in you. They do unlock new experiences by taking away inhibitors or mental filters, but they don’t give you anything they only take away. How could love be in a pill, the love was in your heart all along it was just locked in. Once you understand that you can find similar highs without the downsides. And there are downsides, even when used ‚responsibly‘.
Never liked a video as quickly as this. Back in the day every set was fuelled by ecstasy or speed. Now, I experience those frequencies through my own high vibration. Love these wise words.
great advice, first few minutes already capture so well, taking the feeling you experience with drugs or without and expressing those through music is key < 3
dude, you’re a legend and a rockstar for going here with your platform. I love your stuff, but this might be my favorite video because of how you chose to use your voice and power. High five
I love this so much. Thank you for discussing this in a manner that is nothing short of what you described at the end about passion and open-mindedness. I believe you do the best work of helping when people have something to be genuinely passionate about waiting for them on the other side. It sure helped me in this way, haha.
Beautiful sentiment, Andrew. The main idea of using substance experiences as inspiration, as a glimpse of feelings you then seek to cultivate on your own has worked wonders for me and my appreciation of dance music.
wow ! Thank you for this ...seriously so well put . You could speak at festivals ! I have been in the house music scene for 35 years now . Thank you for not being afraid to touch on this topic! 🙏🏼 Been sober from alcohol for 8 months now. It’s taking a bit of time for me to find that same dopamine high from music but now I enjoy DJ’ing again. I tried using 🌳💨 while mixing but it makes my mind slow and I end up overthinking everything and making simple mistakes. 😂 100% sober mixing is the way to go for me 👌🏽 BTW, I took your DJ course about 3 years ago and now I’m a playing regularly at places around my city 🙏🏼 Thank you

You’re just the best. I truly appreciate how grateful and positive you are in your outlook and teaching style. I live in Portland Oregon and people are on drugs so frequently and/or drinking. Great Fantastic advice coming from a Spiritual DJ, my wife is a Reiki Master and I get your every word, I have been a DJ for 41 years, worked large clubs in the North of the UK since 1983, these clubs seen 2500 peeps per week for a good 25 years or so, I am now a producer, remixer and Radio Presenter in Carlisle in the UK. I love this - great message, accepting, authentic. No judgement, as everyone will have a different journey - but I can always tell when a DJ is high during their set. I raved hard through the 90s and 00s and took everything, had experiences that changed me and healed me profoundly and that's permanent. (Let's not lie - the quality of e back then was at spiritual levels!) I learned about myself, connection and music. Been sober for years, and I am v lucky I can re-experience and also recreate these feels for others while DJing. But it's from a clear and grounded place. Andrew's advice is spot on!

You are so real for this! You know when would I hear about this topic from one of those few popular british channels about DJing? Never ever, if even then...
I understand what you are saying. As for me I will NEVER take drugs NOR drink alcohol when I DJ. I don't see this as an issue as a Sufi Muslim I don't do these things anyway. What I do are Sufi Muslim chants and prayers as well as meditation which helps you prepare far better than drugs. Martial arts forms and meditation combined also seems to help as I know 2 karate black belts who are DJ's who do this. My advice to the younger DJ's concerning drugs: forget it and stay clean as well as focused on your gig!
dj'd almost exclusively at the depths of adderall addiction for years. been sober for nearly 3 years and was impossible to get back into it. gonna try and take some courses soon though, thanks for the video!
Veteran here who did the entire scope of drugs behind the decks in the 90s and early 2000. Being straight clean edge sober today, I can`t emphasize how this is the best "drug" to produce or play - This is the most uplifting consciousness - Anything else just makes you think or feel you`re great, but in reality UR doing mediocre, polishing your ego on drugs.-- Btw, Coke was the worst drug to DJ on - It may give a push of energy, but you lose all sensitivity for the music & crowd.
What a great speech you presented there. Very thoughtful and true for everyone who has experienced the magic but also the comedown. Everything you said is correct. Well done to make other Djs aware of this.
Haven't visit your channel in a while since I sold my Pioneer set up and moved onto synths. Noticed the title and had to laugh as I recall someone mention how this can open the mind to positive creativity when mixing genres during their set, this idea motivated me to discover analog synths and create sounds that I am able to tweak and bend with my every mood and mindset for hours on end. I held onto the Technics 1200's, rotary mixer, and a little CDJ-400 for when the DJ nostalgia comes around. And for any and all who have doubts as I did for a long time... this cat you're watching is the dope and worth your time.💯
Appreciate you taking about this and being honest. You didnt mention it but know a lot of DJs who do coke especially when they have to play really late, and coke is something I'll never do - I never want to do harm to myself for the sake of furthering my career. I have yet to DJ at a gig on any recreational drugs (including alcohol) bc I'm still new and want to be confident in my ability to do well every time to impress ppl. But im sure I'll try playing on psychedelics at some point. I always take substances with the goal of learning new things about myself and immersing myself in the experience to better appreciate things i might not have otherwise. My experience taking psychedelics during other kinds of performances is that i will make small mistakes due to losing muscle memory but i will be really intentional about how i do everything and pay attention to the details of the performance more
Never thought I'd see a video about this topic from you, absolutely love your honesty and words of wisdom. Been watching your videos since the beginning of covid, keep up the great work!
Thank you for bringing the truth out there, I'm so happy someone I addressing this in an industry dominated by drugs use... andI wish we could use get to enjoying the music & art in sobriety, it's its own special type of high, I think people get lost and forget that and they seek out fulfilment in other ways that drugs can't fill, so they keep doing it (I was there once, gave my life to Christ and got totally delivered) you can be free and learn to love life as it was meant to be again (:
True words bro. As a side note, what can be experienced with dr*gs and playing a set is the entering into the flow state. However, more importantly is that there are plenty of ways to enter the flow state without illicit substances.... (side note to the side note: music is one!). Being in a vibration of gratitude is a way to enter the flow state. Times I've dj'd completely sober and in the flow state have been my best sets hands down. A good book on the subject of the flow state is Steven Kotler's "Stealing Fire"
i started to learn to mix about 5years ago to help me get clean from a heavy cocaine addiction. cocaine is a parasite that don't like you having hobbies or being in love it takes everything away from you. I miss that rock n roll guy but I'm so glad I'm clean and have been for nearly 5 years now. I have enough memories of being high on the dancefloor that i can easily put myself in that zone without getting high. getting off the gear was the easy bit what I wasn't ready for was reality kicking in and that beat the shit out of me. But I can tell you being clean & sober is a superpower
Due to being too nervous when playing I fell in the trap. It worked in the beginning , Until 1 night it was just too much, totally blew it. Lesson learned,.. the hard way

Thanks for the heartfelt positive advice man 🫶🙏 your content is great!
My man is out here doing the Lord's work🙏🏾🙏🏾
Good for you mate! Nice advice 😊
Yup.. been there 30yrs ago. It was fun as hell for a while. Dj'ing and partying and having lots of fun. Pretty sure it's messed me up long term.
Thank you for your wise words
True words bro. As a side note, what can be experienced with dr*gs and playing a set is the entering into the flow state. However, more importantly is that there are plenty of ways to enter the flow state without illicit substances.... (side note to the side note: music is one!). Being in a vibration of gratitude is a way to enter the flow state. Times I've dj'd completely sober and in the flow state have been my best sets hands down. A good book on the subject of the flow state is Steven Kotler's "Stealing Fire"
well said xoxoxo
That was awesome Andrew! Love to you ❤
Brilliant work mate 👏
Mixing drum and bass when you’re on the level is where it’s at. Drugs and music go hand in hand.
Excelent video bro... this approach has never been over the table in the way you did it🙌🏆❤️🔥
So recognizable
Love this. Thnaks!
Fantastic topic and with heart. Really appreciate this man.
i started to learn to mix about 5years ago to help me get clean from a heavy cocaine addiction. cocaine is a parasite that don't like you having hobbies or being in love it takes everything away from you.
Damn man didn’t expect that, great.
I needed this. God bless.
Awesome vid my friend! This is just what I was looking for. Thank you! 💥👊🏻💥🐉
Dude amazing video!
Due to being too nervous when playing I fell in the trap. It worked in the beginning , Until 1 night it was just too much, totally blew it. Lesson learned,.. the hard way
