That's right folks. Painkiller appeard Just from nowhere but it was a Real gem. Not gonna lie, its greatest polish game before witcher, and one of greatest shooters of all time.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Painkillers were odd choices since they didn't come out in the 1990s. I would have done or added something like Marathon, Unreal, SiN or Shadow Warrior to the mix. The Half-life one though was fucking ingenious and was my favorite one (either that or the Duke Nukem one).
This was originally titled "my favorite shooters", but nobody was watching it with that title. I might make another, but I feel that the meme format might be overstaying its welcome right now
I feel like there's more, but after a certain point, they all added a feature where you were locked in the arena and had to kill everything to proceed, and the classics only did that for the episode bosses. I feel like BLOOD is what DOOM would look like on Build had Id not moved to Quake. Did you know that Quake was actually pretty divisive at Id because the team wanted to make a fantasy game about a powerful wizard with a mighty hammer that would cause earth "Quakes" (hense the name) and didn't like that it became "another DOOM" after a certain point in development?
@@WickedFamix Yeah, the constant arenas turned boomer shooters into something different enough to be its own thing, but it makes sense after a decade of non-stop designing death match arenas, to have singleplayer encounters be more arena-like, too. I can't quite remember, did Painkiller singleplayer also have normal encounter arenas? I should replay it asap. I can see Blood being a logical, artistic and game-mechanical progression forward from Doom, if Id chose to continue that demonic theme. That's very interesting, i heard that Doom was initially a game based on DnD, at least at it's concept phase, almost like a RPG, but since Id never got the license, it turned into it's own, more demonic, slightly more sci-fi thing without any RPG ideas or mechanics holding it back. I didn't know that Quake caused an artistic shake-up at Id, but i can see that having it have space marines, too, could rub artists the wrong way when they were looking to make a fantasy game. And when Quake was a dark fantasy game initially, a lot of designs make more sense, like the countless knights and shamblers, the zombies and especially that the first game with the Quake engine outside of Quake was a straight up Fantasy RPG Shooter in Hexen 2, which felt perfectly natural using the Quake engine for spells, quests and RPG style puzzles.
For some clarification, the "cherry on the top" is me saying Return To Castle Wolfenstein is the best Wolfenstein game. The New Order is also great in a greatest way, but in a different way that makes me come back to Return more.
