I remember first learning about HROT through you, Civvie, and Trav Guy, and decided to buy it just from how silly it looked. It became one of my favorite retro shooter throwbacks. I haven't finished Episode 3 yet, but after seeing this I guess I really should go back and do that. Shame you're the only one of the three that covered the full game (to some extent, I sadly missed the streams of you playing it)
For me it's Ion Fury Aftershock. There's just something irresistible about detailed sprawling build engine levels. I did not touch any other game while going through that, which is a rarity. Especially for a classic shooter. Thanks for reminding me of the Amid Evil expansion; although I probably will jump into Boltgun first.
My god I thought the rarity of black labyrinth champion achievement was already gone by this time! The only drawback of this game is its short length, even if I have to admit, Amid Evil is so good that it will be always too short.
As far as Amid Evil, I’d be nice if they’d finally release it on PS5 or Xbox, same with Dusk. Why those games are on the switch and not the other consoles just blows my mind.
I actually didn't like turbo overkill very much! I'm sure it's a wonderful game but at some point I stopped shooting and started cheesing everyone with the unlimited foot and decided I had enough of Foot Eternal
"WhY ArEn'T YoU pLaYiNg ThiS?!" he asks, well ... I'm on an NVIDEA 1030. 'nuff said. I may have to shelf over some cash, my 15 year old rig is falling a bit behind :-/
I think my windows laptop that struggles to run system shock (the remake) without sounding like a jet taking off is keeping me from playing amid evil >.>
I will counter the "Why havent you played Amid evil" argument by using steam metrics by saying I played it through GOG, The devs got a higher percentage of my money and i played a DRM free version by avoiding valve
Should have read the description before I sat here for 15 minutes thinking "I swear I watched this video already" and then spent another 5 minutes looking for said video.
1:41 What's preventing me from playing _Amid Evil_ ? Oh, I don't know, maybe that my 15-year-old laptop with integrate Intel graphics struggles to run NOTEPAD. 😒 3:14 Why am I not playing it? Because of the REQUIREMENTS.
The only reasons to why I think people aren't playing Amid evil, is because 1 Lack of advertisement. 2 The game requires one to use their brain more than other boomer shooters. 3 The flow state isn't given to you, it is earned
I would like suggest a doom mod for you to review/play. it's called "lost in darkness" it is a survival horror mod that will require you to resource manage and stay alert at all times of monstrosity roaming around the levels.
"What is preventing you from playing Amid Evil" simple I got a ton of games for little money, some even free (Thanks Epic) during Xmas and there are only so many hours in the day 🤣 I personally have a soft spot for Build Engine games so have been going nuts trying to find all the secrets in Ion Fury and as soon as I find as many as I can without a walkthrough I'll move on to Aftershock. Amid Evil looks nice but I don't have the reflexes anymore for fast movement-based shooters which is why I'm stuck on the Madhouse level on Postal Brain Damaged, I just can't switch targets while jumping and strafing like in my Quake days. 👴
I want to play Amid Evil dlc but... too many games on my plate right now... Got the urge to play the mass effect trilogy then sometime playing ME 2 I got the urge to play the dot-hack games...
Bets games of 2023: 1. DLC/old game from prior year (actually good) 2. DLC/old game from prior year (actually shit) 3. Babbies first Doom clone parody (it is allowed to look like shit because retro) 4. Reddit the game (shit (but le hecking ironic so it's okay))) 5. DLC/old game from prior year which was just delayed again an again until it was 2023 (decent) 6. DLC/old game from prior year (tired 80's-Neon-Cyberpunk aesthetic we had for what feels like 20 years now but with Zoom Eternal gameplay loop (annoying af)) Seems like a shitty year indeed
I think I was turned off by the Amid Evil expansion when I saw someone play it, and the enemies hardly did any damage, or otherwise posed any threat to the player with their behaviors. The base game had that issue too, except for 2 campaigns that inexplicably had harder enemies (The Forges & The Void). I don't know why an expansion campaign wouldn't at the very least be on the same level of difficulty as those. Expansions are supposed to expand on the good and rectify the flaw.
I played Amid Evil, and I actually liked Black Labyrinth a bit better than the main campaign. My problem is with the game engine, or rather, its visuals. I just don't like Unreal's chunky look. Beat HROT and liked it for the most part, but the ending just ruined it for me. The last couple of levels turned to arena shooter, and the final boss felt entirely out of place. I understand why it was done, and I'm all for kicking that smug bastard's ass, but I still didn't like it.
Very surprised by all of the praise for Turbo Overkill. After actually finishing (something I see many haven't actually done according to the achievement completion rate) it felt more like Turbo Overindulgence as it severely overstayed its welcome. It's fun but only to an extent as by the third and final episode I was completely drained. Level design is never really very interesting either so all you're left with is an, at times garish looking, boomer shooter that spams its enemy encounters over and over again without really engaging the player in any other way (aside from the vehicle sections I suppose). HROT, Viscerafest, INCISION, Cultic, Slayers X, Ion Fury, etc are all far better games imo.
"What is preventing you from playing Amid Evil?" Well, it feels kinda sterile with it's art style and mood. I don't want my arcade shooters to emulate the lack of atmosphere from the past. Also, I don't really like high fantasy settings.
Now compare any of those to the likes of Ashes Afterglow or Hedon. Why do these modern boomer shooter authors automatically assume their game would be OK without having an actual plot? And Ashes has got gun p*rn too. And sound design. And so much more. I'm currently playing AugerZenith with Ashes weapons and monsters plus a bunch of other GZDoom mods, and I gotta tell you even without the plot I get way better experience than Ion Fury with it's boring enemy roster of wall-colored enemies. And neither do I have to suffer the fever dream of Amid Evil's or Turbo Overkill's visual style. I guess I'm just gonna mod the hell out of Supplice next. You know, totally abuse the fact of it being a GZDoom title.
I recently purchased a Steam Deck for only $265 for the 64gig base model and got a 512 gig Samsung Evo plus SD card just for a quick start and I must say it not only played well, IT PLAYS BOOMER SHOOTERS to the point where your thinking its running off an RTX GPU then your wondering How the H@ll is this little device doing this...I'm a 49 year old GamerDad who's been with the Doom,Wolf and Quake since day one and i have multiple Consoles an Imac and 2 PCs and i truly underminded this device... With that being said, those who want these boomer treasures on the go even at the HIGHEST IN-GAME VISUALS I recommend the following---- 🎉❤====PRODEUS(Omgggg its THE BEST .. Its like Final Doom with RTX) , TREPANG is the 2nd(its like the Doom SIREN/FEAR 1 & 2 MOD mimicked) And then theres ULTRAKILL(It's reminds me of Quake 3 Arena) These are my Top3... TURBO OVERDRIVE,WAR HAMMER BOLTGUN,POSTAL BRAINFREEZE,FATHER FORGIVE ME 1&2, CULTIC, DUSK are good as well Grab these just because of insane bundle deals DOOM 2,Doom 2016, and Eternal FEAR1 & 2 Shadow WARRIOR 2(Choose Pixels) GTFO KILLING FLOOR SERIES
Turbo Overkill is so freakin' good! One of my absolute favorites, I discussed it in my very first video. HROT also really speaks to me, because of the Quake-vibes, which is also why Dusk remains one of the absolute bangers in the genre. I should definitely give HROT a shot though... Great content by the way! Subbed.
Thank you for the reminder for me to get through Amid Evil myself lol. I haven't finished yet (stuck on Episode 4 atm) but I've enjoyed the early stuff. Also damn I really gotta try Turbo Overkill out huh?
I wanted to like Amid Evil its got tons of style but I don't know its levels and enemies are so one note. I just got tired of playing by Ep3 and never got around to finishing it.
Yes it's a re-upload. I forgot to put Amid Evil The Black Labyrinth on the list the first time.
good reason for a re-upload
Merry Christmas Icarus!
Herald of havoc is 4$ right now on the winter sale. Sweet
I just finished Amid Evil's VR version and, while it doesn't have Black Labyrinth just yet, what an absolute joy that was. Love the Star of Torment.

You're certainly my favorite boomer shooter man, icarus.

I wish more of these would come out on console. I got all the boom shoots series X has to offer, and it’s not enough.
As far as Amid Evil, I’d be nice if they’d finally release it on PS5 or Xbox, same with Dusk. Why those games are on the switch and not the other consoles just blows my mind.
I need to finish Amid Evil at some point so I can play Black Labyrinth.
mini icarusses awesome congrats! thx for keeping the YT going. love and need it greatly
I actually didn't like turbo overkill very much! I'm sure it's a wonderful game but at some point I stopped shooting and started cheesing everyone with the unlimited foot and decided I had enough of Foot Eternal
Man, Turbo Overkill was so fun, I did not expect it. Genually can't remember when I enjoyed a videogame this much!
You forgot about WRATH: Aeon of Ruin - the best retro shooter of our time!
"WhY ArEn'T YoU pLaYiNg ThiS?!" he asks, well ... I'm on an NVIDEA 1030. 'nuff said. I may have to shelf over some cash, my 15 year old rig is falling a bit behind :-/
Skill Issue.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I’m an old boy who grew up with heretic. Can’t wait to play Amid Evil. Looks amazing.

Nice. Did not know about Herald of Havoc.

Can't disagree. Turbo Overkill's gotta be on top.
I can't beat The Black Labyrinth final boss, THAT'S WHAT
austrian avian association seems to have a lot of diablo 1 vibe
Calcium Contract got my attention.

In my defence, when I first learned of Amid Evil my potato didn't meet the system requirements.
"It shoots planets..."
*cough* Stonekeep *cough*

I watched it again. Where's my cookie?

Did you try out Metroid Prime Remastered on Switch?
Plutonia AND Evolution? You will have it very hard for the next 18 years, mate 😅

I've played Amid Evil and Black Labyrinth but it never holds my interest because it's basically fantasy Serious Sam. Hold S and Mouse1 to win.

I swear, like half the comments on Icarus's videos are just people complaining about the stuff he's playing

I'm glad to see people finally starting to come out and admit that Doom Eternal's combat loop was a bit overtuned
I still need to finish Turbo Overkill but its been great so far

To answer the question what is stoping me from playing Amid Evil: My shitty PC
4 out of 6 are complete garbage.

01:45 Not having crap ton of money needed to buy PC that can handle games like these.
I swear this is a reupload
Amid Evil is the GOAT, I prefer it to dusk. as they often get compared.
Thank you for the reminder for me to get through Amid Evil myself lol. I haven't finished yet (stuck on Episode 4 atm) but I've enjoyed the early stuff.
