    First person boomer shooters can be a dime a dozen these days, as welcome a trend as they are. Today's boomer shooter Prodeus, developed by Bounding Box Software and published by Humble Games, is the latest in the the long line of Doom Eternal clones. It's got green and red neon against industrial punk environments, the monsters resemble if the Doom enemy roster got stroggified like Quake. The guns feel great and all that but does the gameplay hold up over its runtime and does the game's movement and combat feel smooth or just the guns? Well, watch the video and find out, goofball!

    I dont like spreading bad info even if unintentional but I need to reframe this video. Prodeus was in early access in 2020, the same year Eternal released so its really not fair to classify it as a clone. It's probably got plenty of DOOM 2016 in its DNA and certainly resembles Eternal quite a bit visually but thats almost got to be incidental.
    Guess seeing it pop up on Gamepass after full release and not really thinking of it as a full game till now had me wrongly mentally categorizing as a later product, especially since it seemed to ape Eternal's color palette. My bad (the rest still stands tho ;)!
    P.S. Sorry to Josh "Dragonfly" Sullivan, who I mistook for his on-stream buddy when I introduced him in this video!

      Brutal! Not gonna lie, I like Prodeus fine but its a nice looking shooting gallery with no real hook in my opinion. Games dont have to explicitly have story but they do need place and some primal sense of agency like youre doing something that the world cares about and i didnt really ever feel that

    As a gamer who enjoys boomer shooters and metroidvanias (and other genres, but these two are the most relevant), I'm starting to see that the saturated indie market is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's great to have more games in a genre you love. I never want to go back to the dry years for metroidvanias. But I think scarcity is one of the magic ingredients that allows a game to become a classic. It's hard to build community and shared memories around a single game when we have so many options. If Prodeus released in 2018 and Dusk released today, would Prodeus be the modern classic and Dusk just the latest retro shooter?

    • @adamluhrs4080
      @adamluhrs4080 Год назад +2

      To be fair, I get the impression that Dusk is the better game. It's not all about the release date. But more games means less limelight and community love for each game. It's a bummer because so many of these games deserve that audience.

    • @HighFunctioningMedium
      @HighFunctioningMedium  Год назад +1

      Me too! I love metroidvanias especially. Yeah, every good idea ultimately spawns a bunch of annoying imitators. Like the Witcher 3 inspired the already bloated nature of AC games into even more a busywork checklist open world structure, there's always some risk that what was pretty decent or great on the first go will get diluted down to its basest components and farmed.
      I'm super burnt out on boomer shooters and funnily enough, I haven't even played that many XD. They just all look like Quake multiplayer with the hyperactive shooting. That kind of thing just sort of desensitizes me to the import of anything I'm doing. I surprisingly didnt enjoy Turbo Overkill as much as I anticipated because I didnt feel like I had enough time to enjoy being in combat because any stopping to smell the roses or marvel at the spectacle meant I was losing ground. But I have enjoyed slower games where each hit seems to mean more and can be processed and corrected for more easily like Cultic and Adaca, for instance. I'm also interested in Wrath and Graven, though they've really kinda gone by the wayside unfortunately.
      But yeah, I've watched Dusk gameplay to death and it's just so sweet. Dusk's still pretty much got the crown for boomer shooters to me from what I've seen and played. Project Warlock's neat but feels pretty gamey and segmented and Ion Fury's kinda stiff and weird to aim, though I anticipate enjoying that one well enough as I go on. Hard to hate the BUILD engine.
      All that to say, boomer shooters have their moments but I'll be damned if there aren't just an oversaturation of them in general and many of them blend together.

    • @radek4634
      @radek4634 Год назад

      Not really. There is a huge difference between these games that remains imperceptible to average players. Dusk was inspired by old games - graphics simulating old titles in a simple form were created, which, despite this simplicity, was used to present the action and leave many things for the player's imagination. The whole gameplay was seemingly like 30 years ago, but the developer tried to improve everything what the games developed over all these years. Not to mention something that is missing in many games - the Dusk developer created his own original game full of his own ideas.
      On the other hand, there is a Prodeus, which at best can be called a doom clone. There are no improvements and gameplay impact, no inspiration - if they did not sell it separately, you might think that it is a mere mod. If you played the first level, you played them all, because they are all identical, only the corridor system changes. Honestly, Prodeus is one of the worst and most boring shooters I have played in recent years.
      For each game such as Cultic, Dusk or Hrat, there are 10 shooters that are only clones like Prodeus, which were created at a cheap intellectual cost, without originality and inspiration.

  • @BrigadoonZyphoon

    Yes, but people can make whatever derivative content they want to and it has a chance of selling due to familiarity alone. The only truly bizarre and unique thing to have come out in awhile is probably Cruelty Squad. Also that super shotgun was weak af, more like "chews-through-bullets-gun." I judge a doom clone solely based on whether it has a good shotgun. The plain shotgun is pretty good, but just doesn't feel visceral. In fact part of this game getting boring is the lack of crowd control weapons and the way enemies spawn in. It also commits the egregious sin of "monster closets" which I thought we had kind of moved on from. Some of the enemies look goofy too, like "Hedon: Bloodrite" goofy in terms of their design. The whole idea of buying abilities and weapons based on an easter egg hunt through level is not for me. I kind of just want to get through a level, not look around it for hidden stuff. Pace-killing should really be a warning on some of these games, I know it sounds stupid, but I'm just not going to hunt for loads of optional stuff in a videogame. Feels like an action RPG or something, and that's not what older first-person shooters were about no matter how arcade-like they were.

    I like Prodeus alot. It's great fun. I just would like it a great deal more if there were more level variety. Like, how many labs are there in this game? There is absolutely zero penalty for dying. That's a problem. In fact it can even be beneficial in some situations. And the shop is wildly unnecessary. Just distributed the guns throughout the levels like any other old school shooter. Don't make me navigate the the Super Mario Bros 3 level select screen, load the shop, walk my ass to the other side of the map just for me to realize I don't have enough currency.

    • @HighFunctioningMedium
      @HighFunctioningMedium  9 месяцев назад

      Good points all around. My basic ass doesnt mind the infinite respawn, mostly because the actions so stiff and its so easy to get clipped. Yeah the shop kinda felt like padding, didnt it?

      @@HighFunctioningMedium it's like you already have secret areas. Just hide the guns there. Like in Doom 1993 you can get your whole arsenal super early if you are familiar with the few levels. The backpack in level 2 is a must have every playthrough. It doubles your ammo capacity.

    To keep it simple: Prodeus is yet another classic ego shooter. You shoot every ugly mug that roams in front of your crosshair and no story elements interrupts you. Each level is like a separate entity you can play as you like. Just rush through or search for secrets. Exactly the way I like it. But let us call is classic ego shooter. Then there is the arena shooter - Unreal Tournament, Quake had this in multiplayer mode, Call of Duty, Fornite. And story shooter like Gears of War and Call of Juarez.
