I first heard Jerry Hey playing his horn during a recording Frank Sinatra was making in the studio with Quincy Jones, and Hey had this little run on the interlude. I queried about who was the trumpeter on that run and was told it was Jerry Hey. I've followed him since, wherever I can find him! He's incredibly talented!
I miss the days when I had the privilege of working with Jerry , Bill and Gary !!! They are the VERY BEST in the business and I'm very grateful Jerry and Bill included this humble French Horn player in a few arrangements . They don't get all the credit they deserve .
The best of the best. Style, control, sound, dialed in trumpet sound, writing, arranging, playing. Flugelhorn or trumpet, no one does it better than Jerry Hey . He is just in my opinion of the best musicians, artists and trumpet players to ever pick up a horn. Gorgeous sound and incredible musician.
GREAT, GREAT GREAT, JUST GREAT! Mr. Jerry Hey in its prime. One of the foremost authorities in the Los Angeles studio scene since the mid 1970s, the range of artists that he worked with is breathtaking, along with his technique, no words. Just like my compatriot, Paulinho da Costa. Another beautiful example that could be in this medley, Al Jarreau - Love is Waiting (1983), without a doubt, a hell of a groove with Hey in it.
What a great trumpet player. I wonder how long he played with Quincy Jones, I watched the Stormy Weather recording by Frank Sinatra and was so impressed with Jerry Hey! As a former professional musician, I know a good trumpet when I hear it, and Jerry is one of the best! When I was young, I accompanied Harry James on the piano for a number when I was in college. I think Hey is just as amazing!
The solos at 1:50 (Seawind/He Loves You) & 3:05 (Seawind/Enchanted Dance) have been my alltime favs. I can still sing along note-for-note with the "He Loves You" solo. It still sounds amazing after more than 35 (omg) yrs. - his solo, not me. Thanks for the post. Nice collection.
Incredible how he does all of that while standing perfectly still...
True efficiency, pro.

Thanks for putting this collection together. Love Jerry Hey. He's an amazing musician.
Absolutely amazing.
That first level lick is from Rocky III vocals by Frank Stallone. Believe the track is called “Push It”.

Nice collection. Much appreciation for introducing me. I've heard many of these before -- and now I know who's responsible...
