The great Arturo Sandoval sounds like Ricky Ricardo, Jerry Hey is my favorite horn arranger, and love his sound, two great musicians, good interview.

Fantastic interview! Great to see Jerry and Gary Grant. I remember Gary back in the day in Hawaii always wore dark glasses and he was so quiet. Not the case I guess - he is full of personality! Fabulous trumpet player. Jerry Hey also a genius- not sure if people realize just how much music he has written and played for various artists. I once heard Lisa Stansfield say in an interview when talking about an album she was releasing that these musicians were involved and she mentioned Jerry Hey. Arturo - I saw him in concert in Honolulu on a rainy night. He was so humble - during the show he thanked the crowd for braving the weather and he said "thank you - I know there are better things you could do on a Saturday night instead of coming to see me". Then he put on a great performance with the Honolulu symphony.

Two movies have been made about the Wrecking Crew and the Funk Brothers. I would love to see someone make a movie about the Seawind Horns and Jerry Hey before they are gone. Luckily, I used to read record liners and began to see the same names over and over. The sheer volume of horn music that Jerry has written is staggering, and playing of this stuff over the past 40 years has been simply the best there is. I remember sitting in a practice room at university trying to play through a trumpet background he wrote on some pop tune. It sounds so easy...and of course I couldn't come close to playing it.

I loved the work Jerry Hey and the guys performed on Earth, Wind & Fire Raise Album single "Wanna Be With You" which won a Grammy. That was such a powerful love ballad.

Funny thing. During the interview I thought, Jerry must have been the Jacob Collier of the past... Couple of minutes later Arturo says exactly this.
