    This CAGED series is a revelation. Once again Brian provides the most cogent and connected layout of the Fretboard, while laying out both practical and highly creative ideas. From the full major, to the full Dominant to the full Minor chord list of patterns, shapes, scales and arpeggios one can clearly see the layout and the interconnectedness of the fretboard. Indispensable.

    This series and another CAGED series by 'Hoodrio' have been so helpful when improvising over country blues. Just find the shape and then there are so many possibilities, and harmonising between. This particular lesson really kind of expanded the 'A' shape in a way, I think of it as the outside part of that shape, linking it to the G shape.

    I like your comment that CAGED isn’t just duplicating the open chord. That’s helpful. When I first sat down to learn CAGED I was really frustrated trying to replicate the shapes with a replacement “nut” in the shape too. Breaking the shape into pieces sure is a much more practical way to see them. Nice work!

    • @jeffro.
      @jeffro. 6 месяцев назад

      @tonyfdesign: I don't understand why ppl do that!
      It's yet another case where someone thinks they know everything about a topic because they know the name, in spite of what every teacher explains.
      Brian, especially, has said numerous times that he breaks the chords into "lower" and "upper" regions, because it's TOO HARD to try to get the whole chord at once, and further, there's NO NEED to try to play all 6 strings!
      Glad one time you actually heard it.
      I don't know why "CAGED" is so controversial, it's like trying to argue that guitars do NOT have strings!
      There are actually ppl on YT who "argue against caged."
      What's to argue???!

    Great series, this is how I was working on CAGED for myself, it is nice to be able to watch this on a couch ;) I think working out the connections between neighbouring shapes would be also helpful (essentially connecting scale patterns/arpeggios/chord tones over two shapes). This came out quite well on the G shape, but possibly a bit less on the other ones. And then the common progressions inside each shape (again 1 4 5 popped out on, I think the E or C shape, quite well but maybe a bit less on the others).

    Thanks Brain for this great series on the CAGED system. As always, there were a lot of “aha” moments. I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't found your website and RUclips courses. And you really explain the connections so well and vividly that you understand it really quickly and - after practicing it yourself for a while - you don't forget it. I find myself more and more often trying to read what mode a guitarist is currently playing in when I watch him play.
    I would like to say thank you for all the great work you put into each and every video.

    😮 So G# aolian is B major starting on G#. Light bulb 💡. I've always knew of the major and minor pentatonic relationship but never realized the obvious ( now ) relation between the the full major scale and the relative minor until I saw your graph on the G shape major scale. Love this series ❤

    • @activemelody

      Yes, they are the same scale - just different starting notes (tonal centers) - same notes otherwise. That's essentially how all 7 modes work.

    Absolute great series of videos. Taking each one in slowly so that it sinks in. You asked for suggestions for other series. Have you ever thought of doing videos on technique tips. Things like hammer on, pull off, slides, vibrato , bending notes, etc.... These topics are probably too simple for a full 20 minute video but a series of short 'pointer' videos might be good.

      Thanks a million, Brian! I think it should be GCE. The A shape is not as useful. With the G, C, and E shapes, one should be able to take care most of the things. Brian, please comment on this. Thank you!

  • @some-other-guy

    I never really distingushed between the A and G shape, just like the C and D shape. To me, these are always pairs of the same thing, just with different focus areas i'd be switching between. It just doesn't form a catchy word if you pair these letters too (unless GADCE, EDCAG or CDEGA means something in some language).
    What for some reason never occured to me before, is that flat 7th on the D string. Instead, i'd always play the b7 on the high E string or switch to the A shape to have it on the G string, though your lower 7th is so obvious and easy to reach in the chord. You must have put that note on my fretboard - i'm sure it's never been there before!

    Great lesson, as usual. There’s only one little mistake in the part with BMaj7 arpeggio - on the 7th fret G string is a complementary D note and it should not be here. B Major 7 Arpeggio Notes: B - D# - F# - A#. But it's just a random error.

    G stands for Gold! Great shape, G and E most useful of all, love all the hammer on possibilities.
    Is it that some shapes are better suited for major sounds e.g. G and others more suitable for minor e.g. A?

    • @activemelody
      @activemelody  6 месяцев назад +1

      Not that I'm aware of - although some shapes might make the major chord itself easier to play - like this G shape major triad can be played with 1 finger, and the G major pentatonic pattern 1 is also in this position... so those 2 things alone might be what you're experiencing.

      The examples in this CAGED miniseries are excellent, it's making me wonder how I'd flip the examples, like using minor with the G shape or major with the A shape for example. I'm finding it a rich seam for learning.
