It's like in martial arts where the general public think that black belt is the goal. The truth is that when you reach black belt (or equivalent), THEN the real training begins. Black belt simply means you have mastered the basics. Now the real training begins. And just like a PhD, black belt takes about 3 to 5 years to attain. The upper levels, (5 to 10th level black belt, or dan in some arts) take the rest of your life to attain. A proper scientist, PhD or not, is a continual student...
Thank you so very much for this Dr. Clewett. We really need more of these jouney-following video series. They are inspiring as hell and really show the life and struggles and emotions behinds math and physics. I think if more people saw these they wouldn't think of these subjects as lifeless, equation-ridden monstrosities like many of them unfortunately do now
Congratulations, Dr James Clewett! You are one of my favorite presenters with nottinghamscience, and I've been eagerly anticipating the completion of your doctorate since you started videos in 2011. I'm so glad you finally made it!
The first time I saw the video of James talking about his handwritten thesis I was amazed and I was expecting to see more footage of his work. Now I won a scholarship to study and work on Hungary and then come back and finish my year left to get my BA degree and this is really inspiring, so thanks Dr. Clewett for this inspiration to work hard on science and accomplish my goals.
James is my absolut favorite of Brady's viedos! I wish there were much more viedos with him!! He's just such a calm and interesting speaker! Please more :)
I am starting my PhD in a few months once I've finished my masters. If I manage to muster half of the passion and commitment that James clearly had for his I will be doing something right. Keep on making videos and sharing your passion mate!
Read the video description of the linked video. We were very lucky to have cameras in the room - but there was a "no audio" condition. This is because recording a viva was new territory and there were concerns about affecting the all-important exam. Maybe next time? ;)
Not likely. Since there was no audio for it, it would just be the images and there's really very little we could get out of those since it's all out of context.
I'd really love to hear the details of this, though conveyed in not too jargony terms. Was this about the surface tension paper we got explained? That really got me interested in thermodynamics which I previously thought of as pretty boring, comparatively.
what an utterly totally likeable guy
I cannot think of a more intimidating name for a person to interview with than "Brilliantov".

It's been exciting to follow Dr. Clewett's journey, and I really hope to see more from him! Such a fascinating lad.
Thank you for letting it all be recorded. Helped a random person in this world a lot.
Where can I find the recording of the viva
Dr. James Clewett is very inspirational
I am so happy for him. It must be a fantastic experience to accomplish something like that . Hopefully I might accomplish like that when I'm older.
You are an example and an inspiration Dr. Clewett.
It's an unreal feeling, isn't it? Congrats!
Couldn't have said it better myself. He really is fascinating and I just want to give him a big hug. :D

::Raises Glass:: Cheers to the good Doctor James Clewett... Hear! Hear!
He said in the other video that they agreed to let a camera be in there, but on the condition that there was no sound to be recorded. :(
On the last video Brady said that he wasn't allowed to film with sound, so it's only film apparently :/
Any video about the work he mentioned?
1k likes and 1 dislike!?
Oh well done Dr Clewett!
Doctor in the house!
I wonder if they arranged to record without sound
Qué grande!
inspiring
I'm not sure, but they may not be allowed to post it. It can contain some confidential information.
Grattis igen ;)

I'm in the prosess of doing my bachelor's degree. I just can't wait all the stress that comes later on
How's it been?
It's been 6 years since right?

"Didn't sleep very well"
I think the footage is without audio, because of confidential reasons. No point in posting it on RUclips unfortunately :(
Are you going to upload the entire Viva? That would be awesome.
please use the nickname: Dr. Tetris
Was it the best time of your life? Or at least the most intense?
What was the sub-field of Physics he got his Ph.D. in? Is Particle Physics Brady?
Because it's mentioned that there was no audio for the interview in the other video: Will James get his PhD? - VIVA.
such na nice guy...
Nice
You want all three hours of it...without audio?
Congratulations! When can we read your thesis?
What is Dr. James Clewett going to work on now?
Interesting.
Is this a description of his doctorate? Or "It's a BOY"??
Highly unlikely
Dr Tetris ;)
How do you know there was no audio?
What happens with the recording of the Viva? :)
Do you get your own TARDIS now? Just asking. ;-)
I wan't to like this comment, but it has 42 likes right now. Decisions...
