thats how it works. Remember Einstein couldnt really get a proper job in Physics until he published his 3 brilliant papers in 1905. Timing and the topic of your PhD is critical for your first post doctoral positions
The last video James was in was 4 years ago?! Woah, time flies. I'm so glad he's had the chance to continue to work in Science. Congratulations on having a baby too.
Goes from PhD to Max Planck, gets a job working with AI, doesn't know anything about AI but "I'm quite a good programmer" :)) no kidding, he must be a genius.
Hello James. Remember that guy you played Tetris (Atari) against at the Classic Gaming Expo '99? I remember it like it was yesterday. :) I see you're still playing and likewise, I haven't stopped either. I have since lost my WR on the Atari Tetris a few years back, and haven't tried to get it back due to how obscure the game is these days, unless you play it on MAME of course. It's just not the same though. Although some have adjusted to the emulated version and have score close to 4M which is an incredible score in of itself. More than twice the WR on the arcade version. Congrats on accomplishing your PhD in Physics! It's hard to believe when we duked it out on Tetris that weekend, that was almost 20 years ago already!! :) Take care, - Stephen -
I felt this way when I went to Oxford yesterday. I saw Edmond Halley's house and the place he went to college at, and I walked the paths he probably walked. It felt very inspiring because Mr. Halley is my hero.
James is really inspiring! It's nice in a way to hear someone actually speak about his carreer and how passionate he is about it. I'm studying physics at the moment, and I hope I can someday be where this guy is right now.
when I was at university in bristol I lived over the road from paul dirac's house and despite being a biologist Ive always had a fascination for the revolutions in physics a century ago because it must have been such an incredible time with the whole concept of reality been re-written by all those semi-legendary names, schrodinger, rutherford, planck, bohr, lorentz, einstein, dirac, heisenberg, pauli &co so it was strange to walk past where he grew up and think how some of that craziness originated right where I was

James is back!! we love you man! Best of luck with your work, im sure great things will come to such a smart and passionate dude. Also Brady never stop bugging James for more content, we cant get enough of him.
I am a huge fan of James so this was a very welcome surprise today. :-) I think in some of us, we know James even without meeting him and there is a little of him in us and a little of us in him. Pretty cool. Glad to see he is sussing this all out and he is doing well. Please Brady, keep us informed on James as time goes on. Maybe a little on the side collab with the Nottingham folks or something??
Today is my birthday! Thank you Brady for giving me this present! :) I really enjoy watching James and learning about the not so ordinary life of a scientist finding his way in life!
For the first couple of minutes of this video I thought James had died and literally gone to "Physics Heaven;" I couldn't be happier that I was wrong. Keep on doing research and thanks for the update!
Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. It's nerve jangling putting these videos out, I am very pleased that people enjoy them.
The job that you really want is your professor's job... But he is still alive... Damn... I rofled.
I just bingewatched videos about you and I feel just happy seeing how you grew and what you experienced :) Thank you for doing this.
I'm sure Gauss would understand what computers are if you explained it mathematically!
Lol PhD straight to Max Planck Institute. This dude must be primo
Not to take anything from his accomplishments, but it may well have been partially due to them needing someone with his specific expertise
Tetris mastery?
+Dimitsas Markos looool

These are my favourite videos on this channel. Its real life.
Realizing Dr Clewett is in the video, instantly thinking about his stage fright before his Viva and smiling at the memory of his Tetris videos :D
I didn't see any singing bananas in this video.
Oh my bad. I was watching some numberphile vids earlier today which may explain my mistake :)
No worries mate. I just saw a good opportunity for a seemingly non sequitur comment and had to post it.
:)

I enjoyed the update from Dr. Clewett. Congratulaions on the baby. :)
This was great, thanks for being so candid, what a wonderful thing it must be to do what you love and not for the pursuit of money.
James is really inspiring! It's nice in a way to hear someone actually speak about his carreer and how passionate he is about it. I'm studying physics at the moment, and I hope I can someday be where this guy is right now.
Love this videos of James, seeing his progress over the years. He just seems like such a likeable person :)

I love listening to James. He always speaks so passionately and honestly; very inspiring.

The first? Norm MacDonald of course.

Same principle, yes.
absolutely
No, it's much better :p
Awsome James ! Looking forward to more vids !
@8:51 Poor James will never be happy... To paraphrase the late Sir Terry Pratchett - "It's questions and answers all the way down, mate...."
It's called en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber_duck_debugging =)
This talk reminded me of the the book, The Glass Bead Game.

Glad to see James is doing well.

I'm not German, but if I remember correctly from school, "Kann ich ein Eis bitte haben?" Should get you an ice cream. Good luck.

"...the job that you really want is your professor's job, but he's still alive." I mean, there's only one option here, right? ...Right?
Yes, wait for a vacancy.
Permanent magnets, how do they work?
Best person ever
Welcome back.
The title made me think he was dead.
JAMESSSSSSS
I had been wondering lately what happened to James' presence on these channels.
Very cool!
This is the way physicists are getting closer and closer to God.
Geeks are just the best people
SpaceBaby.
Thanks for the video but, perhaps, just a bit discombobulated? Best of luck!
My idea of Heaven, where common sense reigns supreme, and no school shooting b.s.

***** Yup, very proud of it, and rightfully so! Years of hard work finally came to fruition :P
I'm sorry man, but to me this all sounds sooooo lame. And I study physics...
