Daniel Mustard was a nyc homeless guy who was on O and A often. Look up Grey Wolf singing "Shelter Me". Grey Wolf also homeless. Song was done in 1 take and they never could Grey Wolf to get it right again. Only a partial song but 1 of the O and A guys added some production to it. powerful stuff. Onl..y 50 seconds... trust me

I remember it was the same story with Mustard. They caught lightning in a bottle with this magical performance. And Opie wanted to finance an album for this guy so they invited him back to lay down some tracks in the studio but he was drunk as usual and developed an ego, and brought in an entourage. He ending up not being able to produce and then everyone lost interest. Last I heard, he’s now sober

Dude. I know this man’s brother. He told me of his brother’s struggles in New York City and that he covered this song on a local New York radio show on Thanksgiving after which, it blew up. I think of Johnny Cash covering 9 inch nails but ‘Homeless Mustard’ is there! I work with the homeless and their stories are not far removed from everybody else’s. This man is a genius if you ask me and so is his brother!

If I remember correctly because it’s been so long ago Mustard was there to be invited to O&A’s homeless shopping spree. He wasn’t a street performer of any kind. Through conversation it came up that he liked to play guitar so somebody said get him a guitar and this is came out.

I've been watching that for over 10 years. First of all, it was a great review or analysis (I don't know how to say it, lol). The fact that he's homeless and everyone would assume he's a creep is, like you said, it's like he wrote the song. And he knows how people probably look at him and so when he sings "I want me one of those; brand new perfect souls ... " it's like he thinks that may be the solution to changing how people see him. And lastly, you can tell that knows he shouldn't be in the position he's in when he says "What the F am I doing here?" .... just so real. It's magic. I think his life improved a bit from this btw. Which is actually the most important thing obviously.

I think what you’re trying to say it’s the difference between Trent Reznor singing Hurt versus Johnny Cash. Iirc Trent once said that in a way he was mad the way Johnny sang Hurt because it was a very personal song to him, but Johnny made it his.
When someone says they’re going to cover the song Creep I tend to wonder which one, Radiohead or Stone Temple Pilots. One element the Radiohead song has to have is vulnerability to sell it. The song is about not feeling worthy of another person and if you don’t feel like the singer has that pain, it just doesn’t work.

Luckily this reaction doesn't have too many comments, at least not yet.....so hopefully you'll see this post.... To his credit, he has does have decent guitar playing skills, but the best cover? Nah...
Hopefully, one day, you'll get to Billy Strings, arguably one of the best young guitarists and songwriters on the current scene... His band has a lot of original material, but they do a lot of covers too.... From the Grateful Dead (IMO, they cover Dead songs better than anyone....including Dead and Co...), to the Beatles, to Led Zep, to Black Sabbath to traditional Bluegrass to various jam bands....
Here's a cover of All time Low (Widespread Panic), featuring another guitar prodigy, Taz Niederauer....
