  • Puerto Plata or San Felipe de Puerto Plata is a coastal city on the Atlantic coast in the north of Dominican Republic. Although known for its beaches, Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata also offers a sneak peek into the history, art, and culture of Dominican Republic. Here are the things we explored during our stay in Puerto Plata.
    1. Puerto Plata City Center:
Parque Independencia: The city center has the Plaza de la Independencia or Parque Independencia which has the San Felipe Cathedral at one end, a beautiful gazebo at the center, and surrounded by pretty buildings that house restaurants, cafes, ice-cream shops, and government offices. It also remembers Dominican Republic's wars of independence and has the statues of Juan Pablo Duarte and Gregorio Luperon, leaders of Haitian and Spanish wars.
We also explored Pink Street or Paseo de Doña Blanca and Umbrella Street just a couple of blocks from the Parque Independencia.
The Amber museum was an interesting one, it displays a collection of ambers having insect and lizard fossils formed millions of years ago. We did a chocolate and wine sampling tour as well.
    2. Fortaleza de San Felipe: This 16th-century fortress was built by the Spanish to protect the city from pirates and other invaders. This colonial building now houses cannons and weapons from the last several centuries and provides insights into Puerto Plata's and Dominican Republic's history. Also, beautiful panoramic views of the Atlantic ocean can be enjoyed from Fortaleza de San Felipe.
    3. Malecon of Puerto Plata: It is a long stretch of boulevard along the Atlantic ocean with access to the city's beaches, where you can stop for a drink or a meal at one of the sea-facing restaurants.
    4. Teleferico (the first cable car of the Caribbean): The first cable car of the Caribbean was in Puerto Plata, that started in 1975. The cable car took us to the top of the Isabel de Torres hill which had sweeping views of Puerto Plata and the Atlantic Ocean. It also has a 'Christ the Redeemer' statue and cloud forest trails that gave us a chance to see the flora and fauna.
    5. Playa Dorada or Golden Beach: This beach is full of resorts, but when we accessed the long Playa Dorada, we could find a quiet corner for ourselves.
A part of our Puerto Plata stay was with our Couchsurfing host Rosalba. In this video, we also share snippets of our time spent with Rosalba, who showed us her city. We tried a few Merengue dance steps with her and shared a home-cooked meal.

Hi there! In Puerto Plata, we stayed in couple of places - first with our Couchsurfing host and then in an Airbnb apartment, both in the city of San Felipe de Puerto Plata, not too far from the Centro.
