  • 2022 Complete overview of Puerto Plata and all beaches in town. This is a very incredible place in the north part of the Dominican Republic. You'll see all beaches from Centro Historico to Playa Dorada. In the coming videos I will be exploring Sosua, Cabarete, Samana, Las Terrenas and more. Previously I had been in Punta Cana, Santo Domingo and Catalina Island.
Christopher Columbus came to this part of the world in 1492 to discover Dominican republic that he then called Hispaniola. The Taino people were the indigenous people, but the Europeans enslaved them and also killed them. The indigenous people also died from diseases that the Europeans had brought. The Spanish started building up towns and centro historico is an example of early buildings found here. I will also film the town of Sosua and Cabarete soon.

Many comments saying Christopher Columbus was Italian. He was born in Italy but spent the majority of his life in Spain, and all crew members on his ship were Spanish, so that's why I think he established a Spanish colony and not Italian.

Hello, I see that you are very adventurous. Although climbing a coconut tree is somewhat risky, especially being alone. I grew up in the Dominican Republic. I used to climb almost all the fruit trees except the coconut palms. In the Dominican Republic, many people cannot afford to eat out. On the shores of the street there are many cheap fruit stalls, just ask about the price ( CUANTO CUESTA )beforehand and if you avoid paying tourist prices

Puerto Plata is actually cheap outside the tourist areas way cheaper than Santo Domingo or punta cana

Sugar cane workers are not even remotely representative of the average dominican working class, for starters the minimum wage its around 200 usd a month which i know is not great but still is way more than just 56 usd, futhermore you must consider that a lot of people(the majority i would say) earn more than the minimum wage, most people working in the service sector(tourism, health, education, etc) exceed that pay, some of them by a very large margin.
But again in the historical center, tourist oriented bussines are the norm so it's no surprise that they charge a little bit more than its normal, and no, it's not like some people made you believe, they don't charge different if you are local or tourist, prices are the same for everyone, still though the local middle class will casually show up at those bussiness.

Loved your video, Im dominican and I live in puerto plata, minimum wage here is around 10 to 12 K pesos (180 to 210 USD), the place you ate is one of many places that are specificaly made to cater to tourist and there for are expensive, specialy europeans since euro coin has a bigger exchange rate than any other curensy, but yeah american and canadians too. for example you paid almost 13 usd for a burger and fries, but in any other place that locals visit they are around 150 pesos (around 2.5 UDS), also if you are looking for specific business policemen are trained to help tourist find anything you may need, we have a specific section of the police for tourist or any non dominican visitors called POLITOUR, they are very polite and well trained and the goberment usually send 1 or 2 to many corners in the streets to check you are secured, give directions and deal with any disturbs that may come, the goberment is very focused in making puerto plata a good experience for any visitors and puerto pata people we are usualy very welcoming.

There are small restaurants ALL OVER the Puerto Plata downtown area, but not a lot in the part he was staying. Within a 10 minute walk there are dozens.
Also, there are several supermarkets in POP, including the very large La Sirena (like a WalMart) which he showed in the background of his video while he was walking down the Malecon. That one is a 5-10 minute walk from his hotel.
For a quick bite to eat, there are little Colmados ALL OVER THE PLACE there that have convience foods. A colmado is like a tiny convenience store. I think William just picked a couple of the wrong streets to walk in his search for food.

William we are Spanish mestizo, our ancestros are Tainos, Spaniars, and later Africans.
Actuality is we are the first Americans mestizos, the Taino were not exterminated, but many died from disease brought by Europeans and unknown to indigenous people. Later the French established themselves with African military men, they brought up slaves too.
Pirates like Fracis Drakes tried to sale slaves to the Spanish king and he did not want to.
During the French Revolution slavery was abolished, and the african french military men overtook the Island invading the Spanish side for 22 years to pay France for overtaking their properties, Dominicans paid, and later France inducted it.

You are certainly learning a lot about the world, that is from a tourists perspective. I'm sure it's a great adventure and we enjoy traveling with you. However, after a dozen or so videos they all begin to look the same. Beautiful beaches, sunny skies, nice hotels and delicious food. What about the people and their culture? Maybe a few museums to add to our understanding of all these differences.

William is just showing us an ‘overview ‘ of the countries he visits. The only way ‘you’ can find out about the people and the culture, is by ‘you as a traveller’ investing time living in a country. The country I spend time in and know is Mexico. Only because of William’s videos would I now consider a trip to Dominican Republic.

Actually, Christopher Columbus landed on the other side of the Island of Hispaniola, which was Haiti in 1492. Don't forget, there was NO Dominican side just yet, only the Island of Hispaniola. They put the Tanio Indians to work in the silver mines, and all other labors. Killed off 7 million of them by 1535. Then the French showed up, had a little war, the Spanish lost, and kicked Columbus's ass over to the other side of the Island, known as the Dominican Republic. I lived and worked for Royal Caribbean cruise lines in Labadee Haiti in 2000 for 4 months. Wow, what a difference to the other side of the Island !!
