LYRICS
Never guess and never know
Losing everything you own
But just before you hit the red
Your best ideas hit your head
The ones you love will call you back
The regulars will treat you bad
A bolt of lightning from the blue
Now it’s really clear to you
Things may not work out how you thought
Things may not work out how you thought
Maybe it is good, maybe it is bad
Either way the only truth we have, is,
Things may not work out how you thought
Use a coin to scratch away
Your desperation on display
A different era starts to show
So different friends will come and go
The one you love will hurt you bad
But a stranger has your back
It’s sunny when it starts to snow
And that is when you really know
Things may not work out how you thought
Things may not work out how you thought
Maybe it is good, maybe it is bad
Either way the only truth we have, is,
Things may not work out how you thought
Things may not work out how you thought

takes me back to 2005 ... cancer diagnosis....mid-college... career.... finances ... ALL gone.... so much pain and destruction... here it is 2024 and I still can't seem to wrap my head around what happened.... omg...
Man. Imagine if this came out before the great music industry dispersal into the corners of the internet.
i dont think i will ever get sick of this song
I just lost my best friend 12 days ago. We were traveling together and a truck hit us. She didn't come home with me. I was planning to have her in my life every step of the way. And coming to terms with her loss is taking a lot out of me. I'll never be the same. The world broke it's promise and I don't know if I'll ever trust it again, I don't think I even should. The power of sudden change and the sudden and awful return to normalcy reflected in the song are cathartic. This song captures something that is hard to talk about and helped me shed some tears that were hard to get to. It's brought me some peace and helped me feel less alone. It has been like a hymn to me that I'm always sort of singing in the background. I sing it when I'm working or alone and need a touchstone. I love it. Thanks.
Mike F man I really don't know what to say but I'm sending you love
Thanks
Hugs brother
Mike F I'm so sorry
Hang in there Mike and try to make the most that you can from your loss.
King of dream pop.
Alex Ball Coming from the Sultan of Synth!
"Sultan of Synth" - that's next album title sorted.
Alex! Fancy seeing you here!
King of Comment Sections
"King of comment sections" is the opening song from my album Sultan of Synth.
I love that this guy who must be 30-35 years younger than me is able to capture so many strands of the favorite music of my life and still make it his own. Some of his stuff reminds me of Zappa. This reminds me of Yes or very early Genesis. Some Miles. Some Shorter. And his funk grooves are so funky my head nearly explodes. I like all of it.
Dude had Todd Rundgren circa '73-'74 down to a science having never heard any of his works, too. Soon as "Bus in These Streets" with Thundercat came out, everyone and their moms were tossing "AWATS" LC's way.
He definitely reminds me of Zappa in spirit; they're the type of artist who does whatever they want, shunning labels and contracts while having the skill to afford to do so.
@@irlShively AFAIK he does have labels and contracts, though
@@NZsaltz ig what i mean is like big mainstream labels. They don't just do it for the money and they don't try to fit the trends. They just make what they want and the people who like it will like it.
Some Lounge Lizards in here as well -- virtuosity! Maybe a little Bryan Wilson/California beach vibe, too...
This makes me feel things.
Things have been felt, certainly.
I think you need to be a BIT more specific.
@@GEMOTO They may not
I really want to see 'Louis Cole & Garrett Williamson' Collaboration album and this gonna be crazy! 😍
Even years later, this song still brings existentialist comfort. We're all here together after all
still here, since when it came out.

I met louis cole pre corona time... interesting times... in Vienna , and he trusted me, my ex boyfriend and me organized a concert then in Vienna.. . 2018ish...
it's just such a beautiful message
@@garretthomson2036 yes, absolutely. Both Things and Let It Happen
That's like listening to a Beatles song. That's just fucking great. Old guy here. Peace.
My 6 year old son Arthur wants to me write the following to Louis: “This song is one of my favourite songs. I like it when you’re lying on the car. I’m learning about the drums and the piano.” I also want to thank you Louis for enriching our lives with your wonderful music.
Arthur sounds like a really cool dude!
what a cool dad
@EmbodiedDespair it probably comes naturally by now. Hope Arthur is still playing.
Your boy has some taste lol
ikr th, 6 year old thinking about hardships and stuff seems reallly mature.
It's my birthday. I'm one year off a battle with cancer. Though my health problems worked out, the lasting impact from that experience was learning that my support network was much more limited than I expected. The so-called friends and family members didn't so much as check in on me when I was dealing with a life-threatening situation; some even sought to take advantage of me. As my birthday approached, I couldn't get myself to find it appropriate to include those who neglected me. It was just me and my wife today; the pain of my loneliness heavy on my mind. This song played loudly in my mind all day. "Different friends will come and go. The ones you love will hurt you bad, then a stranger has your back." This didn't work out how I expected. But I can pick up the pieces and start seeking some new people who are more reliable.
Wow, Louis Cole, " Things" is just pure magic🎉🎶🖖
The world can be cruel and unusual at times, keep trying, keep living. If you cant find love take it from this comment
The perfect fusion of musicianship and art.
^ Agreed. Dude rules
Music is art my friend
@@mysteriousm1 Indeed. That's why I specifically said musicianship, meaning the "know-how" and accumulation of musical knowledge.
This guy is as important as Bob Dylan. Let's treat him as such.
The difference is, is that Louis isn't the worst harmonica player ever. Bob Dylan both sucks and blows.
I don’t understand why he doesn’t have million listeners audience yet. But I believe, this music will became classics someday! So clear , so truthful. My favorite musician of our days !!! Please never stop making music
The music industry is in a bad place now. Hopefully theyll snap outta it
Mainstream music nowadays is bad... really really bad. Louis Cole deserves better than this whole BS industry.
It's too sophisticated. It's that simple I'm afraid :(

Louis Cole is a beast
I hope things work out for this guy.

I hate that this song is only underground. This is a hit.
This song changed my life forever. The talents of Louis Cole are underrated, his work is beyond this world. Yet so close to the heart. Thank you.
0:45 I love the shots of the camera "spinning" around Louis, but he's actually tiptoe-ing in a circle as smoothly as he can 😂
I remember I found this song on my discover weekly as I was chilling by the river in my city. Me and my friends were going to have a fire after the sunset, but right before that this song comes on as the sun is setting over the water. Something about it, I don' t know but we danced an drank and had a great time, but man when it hit the 3 minute mark, that when I knew my life changed. This song is most beautiful thing I have ever heard and I cherish it forever. What seemed like a mynute moment in my life quickly best part of my summer that year. I look forward to doing the same thing once all the snow melts. Your music is legendary and I'll never forget it.
I hate how talented this guy is
I can't help but cry when I listen to this song... Anyone?
There aren't many things in life you can be sure of, except: rain comes from the clouds, sun lights up the sky, hummingbirds fly and music makes me cry. Thank you for making me cry LC.
Life before Louis Cole < Life after Louis Cole
Louis Cole is magic.
I keep coming back to this video, especially recently.
I love how the last part of the song/video seems like Louis Cole lashing out or losing himself to the hurt it seems he is holding onto in the earlier part of the video. Then at the very end, you see the sky change and other people appear for the first time almost like Cole is coming back to reality after he has worked through some things in his mind.
At least that's how I see this piece of art.
Agreed. The video is so well designed it really carries its own story.
Love this interpretation
Mate, I felt exactly the same way. It's poignant to me because I'm coming out of a long, long depression and it really spoke to me. I've listened to it a few times, but it speaks volumes. I suppose there are many interpretations. Love to you friend.
In general, music has helped me get through a lot, but this song and video is just on a whole other level. Its amazing how so many people have interpreted this the same way I have. Amazing to see such a common thread from a single piece of art.
My wife's father died yesterday, and this song is really helping, rn
This track is the fucking meaning of life
Let the world know, Louis.
god bless you, dude.

It's not an ice creeaaam! It's a miiicrooophooone!
This song has a certain kind of beauty that is heartbreaking and comforting at the same time.
All I know is that I want more of it.
My dog just died and the first thing I wanted to do was watch this video. That same lightning is flashing across the sky in Nashville tonight, and I feel less alone now. Thank you, Louis.
Sorry about your dog.

this song is so important to me
I don't know how many times I've listened to this. I bought the album, but I keep coming back to watch this video. It is a masterpiece. It's not often that I hear a piece of music that consistently invokes such a vulnerable emotional response. I feel bigger and more alive inside when I listen to this.
I just divorced my wife of 21 yrs due to her cheating.. the pain is unbearable.. 2kids. But I stood up and won’t allow her damaging ways to destroy me. This song gives me the release of tears to cleanse and move forward.

@@kumingo I’m trying…actually donor do not there is no try. So I’m doing better.
i´m shure you´re probably feeling better by this time, but always remember, the pain can be unbareable, but it´ll go away.
this is my comfort song
This is a beautiful song by one of the most all-around talented musician of this time. He should be HUGE, and he will be. This kind of talent cannot go unnoticed for long. Louis Cole, you're a beautiful soul.
Beautiful, dark, and surreal with the post apocalyptic pop nostalgia of Boards of Canada.
He ain't lying
I think this gem is the song that everyone should be required to listen to when going through a quarter-life crisis..
You know, I was having a pretty shit day, couldn't sleep well, people on my ass, constant headache. This just kinda made me feel better. I'm no poet, I know, but my opinion of this song just rose infinitely.
This song made me cry, it's absolutely beautiful.

The coming of age song. Rock on Dude!!
First time I heard this song it broke my heart. The more I listen to it tho the more it becomes comforting.
Made me cry buckets of tears, thanks Louis. 😢 A beautiful track that succinctly captures how it feels to have your heart crushed into a fine, cold, powder by life. 😢

Stay independent. Your music is beautiful.
This guy really deserves to be more popular.
Champagne Ill brought me here great song and great show
I feel like this could be The Day After The Weird Part Of The Night (Yeah!)
More like 2 years after "I'm here for you for all time"...
This song made me happy
1. Thank you. 2. I haven't seen someone's writing evolve like this in my lifetime. It's, frankly, incredible to watch.
adding this to my music list of videos that should have 10 million views
When I listened to this song my whole life passed in front of my eyes. This is inspiring, gives me goosebumps all over and touches my soul and heart.
Sprained my ankle last summer. Been in pretty much constant pain for the past six months. Whole world seems to be falling apart and I can't even go for a fucking walk... I relate to this clip, freaking out mentally all the time, still trying to keep my cool and composure, living for my music. Things have to work out somehow-someday, right? Thanks Louis Cole, for relating to me...
You don't know me, but you're my bro.
Visuals make me wonder what a vapourwave sitcom intro would look like.
the visuals are sick
Damn son

This was the theme song of my life in 2018. 44 years after I landed on the planet. Glad I lived to hear it.
Thank you Louis.
This song feels like a nice warm hug
Song came out when my ex broke up with me. God damn that hit hard. Now I celebrate it.
Here I am again :)) new ex.
This song personifies melancholy
Just Beautiful...
This song is such a perfect representation of my mood these past couple months and it's about to make me cry.
"Things will not work out" has a similar melodic feel to that song "Crazy Car" by The Naked Brothers Band.. of all things!
Just discovered Louis Cole through his alleged role in clown c0re with Sam Gendel. I wanted to know who the drummer was because the rhythms were just unlike anything I had heard. Then stumbled on Knower and his solo music andnI just think is one of the best musicians around today. Totally unique and a extremely gifted musician. Thanks for the music Mr cole!
I came here looking for the best drum and bass drummer and found it!...and then I discovered the rest! And what a discovery this is!
This song played with my heart so much it made me learn a new word.
"Saudade is a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent somethings or someones that one cares for and/or loves while simultaneously having positive emotions towards the future. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never be had again. It is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places, or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, and well-being, which now trigger the senses and makes one experience pain. However it acknowledges that to long for the past would detract from the excitement you feel towards the future. Saudade describes both happy and sad at the same time and is most closely translated to the English saying ‘bitter sweet’."
Thank you for this.
saudade sounds like sausage

I LOVE U LOUIS COLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
I was listening to this song yesterday casually. Something really surprised me though, a REALLY good friend of mine - someone who I hadn't spoken to for years - messaged me out of blue while I was listening to this. Cheers.
FilezPlays I literally had the same experience!! Except at 4 AM, rekindled a lost friendship but man so weird right?
Well, I guess things didn't work out as you thought... :)
Be careful of pyramid schemes, bros.
Sounds like this track has magical properties
this song is killing me AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH
I don't know how this happened but this is my current life right now, in many ways, it's scary. The raisin bran, the ziploc containers, A stranger is who's house i'm living in, my family and friends have turned on me, i play scratch offs, but things are becoming clearer and i'm willing to accept failure. This song makes me want to show the important people in my life how much I love them.
This hasn't gotten the clicks it deserves.
This song man. The chorus really gets to me. I’m really scared for my future and how unknown it is. I really hope that it does work out but it doesn’t have to be how I thought.
I wish i could like this song every time i listen to it!
Been a while since I've had a song stuck so firmly on repeat. Thanks Louis!
