SUSD has always been a vibes-focused gaming channel. There is a super obvious reason that games they recommend end up with positive reviews and increased sales. SUSD is not trying to sell you a game - rather, they focus on expressing how you’re going to experience a game and how you’ll feel after. 1:25 I come out of everyone video knowing if the game is for me or not, but I never feel sold toward. Curious what others think… I never comment on YT videos but I want to give a massive props to all of the SUSD hosts and contributors, and especially Tom for taking on such a unique situation with such skill, technique, talent, blended with an impressive understanding of legacy and vibe. What a legend. Hope to game with these guys someday!
That’s the joke. James Cameron’s Avatar is different from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Avatar:TLA is not a manga despite being in a similar style. So two jokes for the price of one.
@@AethersPhil It's less that it's the similar style that makes it not a manga and more that a manga is a comic book rather than an animated TV series. A common joke/mistake that many people make. Love the layers.
holy smokes, this seems like they made a Smoothie out of: - 2 Star Wars Rebellions - half a liter of your favourite cardboard Root - the peel of 50 grams of Defenders of the Wild - some serious pinches of Salt - Chess-Zest as preferred a most thorough blend. sounds, looks and seems absolutely delicious to me.
Great review :) I really like the point you make about the spectrum of "thematic / variable" and "tight / dependable". A lot of two player games fit in the "tight" spectrum, which is great - but it's nice to have something that is a bit more fun to explore with that variability - especially when the play time is < 90 mins. A lot of thematic 2 player games - especially area control-style - have very long play times (e.g. War of the Ring). The "three trusty, dependable cards" really helps the balance with Ironwood I think.
I’m so glad you guys chose to highlight this game! It became an instant favourite for me and my friends, but it wasn’t really getting any recognition so we were worried it wouldn’t reach the audiences it should 😭.
0:14 Oh dang! I completely forgot I backed the Septima Kickstarter. I got it, put it on my shelf, and there it remains. It's nice to hear positive word about it, but I should definitely try and get it to the table at some point (or at the very least, open it).
After years of conditioning to Tom’s glorious silliness, the barking street sweeper still caught me off guard and I loved it. Thanks for the fun and thoughtful review! I particularly appreciate the discussion of the abstract/thematic spectrum. Quite insightful!
Tom, man. Just an all round awesome fella. I met him at UKGE and he was just how you would want him to be; welcoming, funny, enthusiastic and gracious. His game preferences align with mine or maybe mine align with his because of him. Or summat. So now I have to buy Iron and Wood Lads
If this seems interesting, I'd recommend checking out A Gest of Robin Hood. No card play, but some hidden movement from both players and a more direct tug of war for victory.
This was by far my favorite game played at PAX Unplugged and I'm glad to see you highlight it here! It's perfect to my taste because I don't like the more abstract, chess-like 2 player games, and prefer the "wow, you can do that?" moments. In this game those moments are earned/paid for with the use of those non-basic cards which are also killer if used instead for battles. If Star Wars: Rebellion has a fling with Kemet that resulted in a child, this would be that child, and I love him.
I wish you would have mentioned that it also has an extremely good solo mode allowing you to play either side, with a bunch of difficulty options to scale the challenge to taste. I probably wouldn't recommend buying it only for the solo mode but it's been fun exploring that part of the game.
And the Root comparisons in the comments remind me of "Getting a lot of Boss Baby vibes from this". There are lots of great point-to-point, card-driven wargames and this is one of them.
This seems like a great game, but I don't think the cover art does it justice. The strength in the game seems to be its assymetry, but the art conveys the opposite. Maybe it would've been cooler if it showed a scene in which the Woodwalkers ambush an Ironclad outpost or something like that?
The Ironclads having an easier time of getting those gems reminds me of how the Empire in Star Wars Rebellion has an easier time of making fleets and armies. And I could this game getting a four player variant where two modern colonizers and two tribal locals all compete.
I thought that was the coolest mechanic. Especially the first game I played when I realized what was happening. Unfortunately I will probably never get it on the table again lol
@@invertedforce3300 you could see stock counting down when they reviewed Arcs 🤣. I've had to do the unthinkable and preorder from one of the two UK suppliers who has this on preorder.
Nice battle! Sorry to hear that cyberpunk is on hold, but I'm looking forward to the new stuff, too. Not too familiar with Warcrow, but Inifinity is pretty awesome, so I wouldn't mind seeing what Warcrow is like. If your players like Infinity, that could be cool, too. Lots of character in this models, which would suite your narrative style really well.
Uuuuh that sound effect from 0:30, that's the sound effect of selecting a menu option in Air Combat for PS1!? That's a heckin deep cut. Or is that somehow found it's way into a stock audio library?
I love when I go to the forums and the first few posts are "I've just played my first game, it's WiLdY UnBaLanCeD!11" Sure dude, you're just such an elite gamer you become an expert after your first game, no need to play more, you got everything figured out.
Its not two player month, its anti-valentines. Two months from the end of the year instead of two months from the start, its just like valentines except everything is reversed. When two people just want to murder and crush each other instead of sweet sweet
Saw this one at the Spiel. Sadly havent played since it was Sunday, 90mins to closing and my friends had already left(weakness disgusts me...). Gladly Susd featured it, may have to buy it now. Btw, although I missed it for 3.9 days apparently, this games publishers booth was one of the best, just because they had little standees with an A4 sized description of their games. A way to instantly know if waiting for a seat could be worth it.
I really like this comment. Except I don't understand how people that 'don't understand binary' are one of the 10 kinds of people that 'understand binary'? 😂
@6:50 [holds up an octagon]
“These hexagonal tokens.”
That’s it, I’m writing a comment.
Literally unwatchable.
Circle the wagons! Tom is a total square.
This Tom fellow must be a pro RUclipsr with that level of bait.

Metal vs wooden pieces is really fun and flavourful flair
6:49 Ah yes, eight-sided hexagonal tokens, my favourite!
He was cooked man, give poor lil' Tommy a break
Technically, all hexagonal tokens have eight sides.
Tom was holding up a ten sided token.
The aesthetic here is almost as strong as Tom's new haircut and scandalously buttoned down shirt.
Two new isometric game - That's the words I love to hear !!
I don't know why but calling the Ironclad "the Lads" really tickled me for some reason
That joke about "James Cameron´s Avatar: The Last Airbender, one of my favourite... mangas" had me laughing out loud. Great review as always!
i dont get it, pls explain! :D I thought that it was an original creation (meaning not adapting from manga)
That’s the joke. James Cameron’s Avatar is different from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Avatar:TLA is not a manga despite being in a similar style. So two jokes for the price of one.
Really? It felt forced and predictable. I know SUSD can do better.

the problem is that it was an incredibly funny joke

Glad to see the return of "A fine move", the Boy Brewster.

Seems like a fun game :) thank you for sharing
If one were so inclined, they might call it the month of OcTWOber.
I love how James Cameron’s Avatar the last Airbender somehow makes some sense here as both portray the struggle he describes.
I like the crystals as mechanic to force confrontation.
This is probably my second favourite OcTwober video from SUSD.
This was worth watching for the avatar joke alone.
damn those new games look so frickin beautiful
I like watching those videos for fun and inspiration, but this is maybe the first time I want to buy the game.
Oh, so that was actually you I saw in Essen, cool
No, that was me. I'm a little taller but smell worse.
"And exactly one other freind.."
Well that rules ME out...
Good news for the lonely: it has a solid solo mode!

1v1 games are always a bit suspect in my eyes, but they really nailed the art on this one.
1 v 1 is the best player count.
Tom mate, that hair cut with that flannel bro. Utter gorgeous! Mans in his hunk era.
So happy to see 2 player games!
This one looks fun
Tom slowly turning into a lumberjack one video at a time

This game would indeed work great with Avatar theme. I bet the licensing cost would be too prohibitive though.
Talking about abstract games and you didn't mention the Hexagons of Hyperspace!
