This is Why You Suck at Parrying in Rise of The Ronin

  • Over 7 weapons with more than 30 combats styles to choose from. This right there is the reason why people might have felt like parrying (Counterspark) was inconsistent in Rise of the Ronin, because well, It is. But that inconsistency is the result of different counterspark animation with a lot of forward momentum, which in some cases might lead you the player pressing the parry button sooner than later to effectively perform a counterspark. That said, it takes some getting used and the disparity between weapons and combat styles doesn’t make parrying unreliable. After spending a while at the dojo and parrying with confidence every enemy faced, I can tell you that countersparks work if you are willing to put in the time. The question is, with so many different variables, can we blame the game for being overly complex with little to no explanation as to how weapons and combat styles may affect parrying altogether

I feel like later in the game enemies just don't have animations. And then they are either just super delayed or just instant. And then if you do miss a parry you're stuck in an animation that you can not longer continue parrying the incoming attacks

    • @xShinobiXx
      @xShinobiXx 4 месяца назад +10

Yes exactly. They did it this way to make it excessively hard/annoying. For some reason every major enemy I come across has a super fast across the screen dash. Doesn't matter if it's a big fat guy. He will have a red attack that instantly covers the entire arena or just odd delays
What happens is you do a few attacks. The enemy has hyper armor and can hyper armor through any of your attacks even martial arts. So that one hyper armor they do puts your ki in red. Now you are stunned and they keep sending a barrage of attacks

Haven't finished the video yet but it was pretty clear to me that the counterspark system was Team Ninja's way of getting around the "Sekiro wiggle" a.k.a spamming the parry. You can't spam in ROTR, thats one of the first things I noticed about the game. You're not incentivized to parry every swing, just the finishers. If you can parry every swing thats fantastic but it requires a 100% download on your enemy's moveset

Not exactly. You definitely don't want to be blocking too much either. The Ki reduction is very high. And most of your buffs from gear will most often have some form of counterspark ki increases. Meaning they want you to counter spark all attacks not block..second issue is you don't know which attacks will trigger the stun after a counterspark. Sometimes it happens on the first hit. If you always block you'll lose the chance for a stun
Also in sekiro you can't win a boss fight with spamming. You can some what spam a few times and possibly land a parry or two. But the rest will be blocks that will significantly reduce your posture. Not ideal

      @@xShinobiXx This.
My two cents. The blocking of the last strike in a combo works for about 2/3 of the game but then you get to the last chapter and it's completely different. You don't have enough Ki to block every attack in a combo and if you mess up one counterspark the game doesn't let you "repair" your mistake and you'll get hit 2-5 depending on the speed of the combo. That makes the last chunk of bosses so annoying (at least for me). Add the weird flow of combos (delays, fake swings, several red attacks with different timings), different weapons and stances and it's a mess in my opinion

People love simplicity when it comes to combat they want the enemies to be hard but also want the combat very simple to grasp. Which is why I believe Ghost of Tsushima was such a hit. Not only were the graphics amazing but the combat system was very simple it was an easy pick up and play for a lot of people and didnt require much skill to win. Whereas this requires a lot of skill and thought when it comes to builds and how you play. Fighting five enemies at one time in GOT was not something ppl feared (for lack of better word) versus fighting five enemies at one time in rise of ronin is something ppl try to avoid. I for one love everything about this game and combat it makes u think quick on your feet and requires a ton of focus to play. Its not a game that you can just speed run through it and speed run through battles and bosses. High skill high reward and when you finally get the hang of it man is it satisfying pulling of combos and finishers.

It's also worth remembering that the countersparks in certain stances are also supposed to be used offensively as well as a parry. This is also why certain ones have different timings and forward momentum. The counterspark in Mumyo-Ryu for the katana for example can also be used as a guard breaker, while the counterspark in the Tatsumi-Ryu style can be used as a gap-closer and a combo extender.

One thing I have a hard time with is that some many of the attacks have delays that definitely get you if you try to counterspark with any rythm. That second or hald second, combined with their poise will practically have you eating attacks often. Sometimes they are likely doing a charge to an Martial Art which will cause a delayed response, so it always disrupts the flow of many countersparks on my end.
I swear, it is like an ai in a fighting game that is reading inputs and changes the command at the last possible second. Tecmo/Koei loves this style it seems, especially combined with Rock Paper scissors. It is actually one reason I kind of like the Gikei (sp) style with the sword. The counterspark often teleports you behind the enemy, meaning a non-perfect counterspark is less likely to get punished.

Some of the parry moves start working a bit later, you need to press earlier, like for example, Shinto munen ryu's parry(Katana, Odachi and Naginata) These three weapons share the same counterspark move, it feels like try to parry with a shield in dark souls. Once you get used to it, it's actually pretty forgiving, but you are vulnerable for longer time if you whiff.
Next, mumyo ryu, the standard combat style for every weapon. The parry frame starts a bit earlier, the MC swings a big circle, I believe the parry frames is the first half of it.
And there are some styles' counterspark move don't have an attack at all. Like Hayabusa ryu(Katana, naginata) the timing is the last moment before the enemy hits you. This kind of counterspark is the hardest to use since other CS will a least try to stop the enemy by hitting them when you fail to parry. But this costs the least amount of ki to use, and has less recovery time.

The system is fine, though it is unforgiving. But that's the price you pay for using the wrong stance. 🤷‍♂️ I think the problem might come in too, people want to use certain stances because of how they look/feel...well I think they messed with the parry windows for the new stance match up system. If your using a stance when the enemy has a red arrow pointing down...your timing has to he near perfect. But if they're in the blue you will have a MUCH easier time parrying. I'm about 60 hours in and am having a blast playing unarmed with a katana for really tough guys. If you follow the systems, the game does a great job of teaching you how to use them.

To anyone having problems, just put the game on easy (dawn) difficulty and it's a lot of fun and pretty easy (with occasional difficulty spikes. Even on easy, be prepared for the final boss. But as long as you are prepared with a lot of health items (make sure the stats are leveled up enough to carry at least 9 medicals and 3 elixirs by default) and at least 3 paralyze items you can put on the sword and know when to do a temporary tactical retreat when the final boss is going crazy, you will do perfectly fine). No shame in using the easy (Dawn) mode. Just have fun with the game (it's incredibly great).

I found the spear to be the hardest to parry. The Odachi is slow so it messes up your rhythm when facing katanas. I think it’s people who are fast past fighting and are not taking their time with each encounter gets owned. I’ve stayed with katana samurai load out and found myself two hitting enemies. I doubt find the controls messy it’s how you approach each enemy and how you find their rhythm when of attacks. So strategy comes into play into every encounter.

    1. In this game, some of these characters has the same animations at the start or very similar, that's why some people be confused and can't parry it.
    2. On midnight, few characters seem like they be attacking forever, even when you parry it. and if you miss some of it your stamina will drain down a lot.
    3. I don't know if anyone else notice this, but the enemies in this game can keep attacking forever without losing any stamina.
    4. There's a little few moves when you gotta parry it waaaaaay to perfect.
I can understand why this game has a low score, still probably sold well tho.

Team Ninja is not fond of being able to option select block and parry because it makes parrying too safe which means it has to be weaker. If you look at Nioh they had a similar system called burst counter but with only 3 moves, one was a block that acted as a parry, another was a strike that you had to hit when the enemy was red, and the last was a dodge that you had to dodge into the attack at the last possible moment. Here it's kinda similar but you have more counter sparks and the parry mechanics is more similar to DMC where any attack that had parry frames can parry as long as you're hitting it correctly. Is it unnecessarily hard? The game does give you enough room to fail it and try other options so I don't think it's that hard for the purposes of most people to at least win the fights. If we're talking about no damaging I think it's a bit harder.

If games gave more indepth info about how they worked. For example, explicitly showing the player the parry timings described in milliseconds ie "100-300ms into the countermove it has active frames." Then players would be less confused. Most games with timed inputs don't do a better explanation than "press just before attack lands". And don't explicitly show the downsides and benefits of using different defenses, because that's up to the player to figure out. Players however, have come to expect games to work certain ways, and I'd really prefer if gamemakers gave more explicit, highly detailed descriptions of the game mechanics.

Nothing is wrong with the combat.
There are 3 indicators as to when to parry/counterspark. The red aurora lets you know the enemy is gearing up. The red flash after lets you know the enemy is beginning the unblockable attack. There is a white flash just after the red flash and that's when you parry. Realizing this detail opened the game up way more.
The trick is being there are SO MANY fighting styles and patterns as to how the enemy fights you. Even in rematches. It's like you're fighting a real person on the other end of the controller. That's the challenge. You getting stuck in the combo of getting hit is the punishment of the game. The enemy even suffers when they get caught slipping. It's an earn-and-reward game.
Anyway, the fit for your character is DOPE!

I could fight almost any enemy and parry consistently. Ive put over 40hrs in RotR and i still miss more countersparks than i hit. There are so many movesets to memorize, and with most attacks i dont have a fast enough reaction time to parry on reaction. I have to memorize what feels like are 100 movesets. Its pretty frustrating. I learned early on, they dont want you to play this like Sekiro. They want you to primarily block and dodge until youve learned every movesets. I like the Bayonet, and the counterspark animation is SO LONG.

That's because sekiro parry is reaction based. And the way they made it reaction based is your parry can trigger anytime. Even subsequent Parrys have little delay. So that means you can play the game based on reaction.
In rise of the ronin it's more based on memory because if you react wrong you are dead. In sekiro if you react wrong you just block the attack

I'm literally in the same boat as you. How he was able to get those high level and rarity gear was to complete the game, choose to play on the new highest difficulty which becomes "Midnight" when given the choice, then go to the Longhouse, go to Testament of the Soul and replay missions including do Allies battles. Completing all or most sidequests and whatever new public orders may open following game completion (prior to choosing "Midnight" difficulty) also helps to pile on those levels and numbers.

At first I thought that the block and parry (aka counterspark) should have been on the same button too (as in most these type games....R1)....Hold for block, Quick press for parry. But after a while I got accustomed to it and it made sense with regard to how other things work.
And yeah, there's a load of combat styles for various relevant weapons and stances so much so I could hardly memorise what does what in the heat of battle. So I either usually pause the game to pull up the "effective" stance for the enemy to refresh the styles to temporary memory, or just press R1 + whatever and hope for the best.

I feel like parrying is intentionally difficult/brutal because the game is 100+ hours easily. The parrying difficulty always keeps you on your toes. There's a few attacks I can parry well but I constantly get my ass handed to me. Thankfully it's easy to get over-leveled and brute force your way through bosses. The game is difficult but also really forgiving, it rewards you for everything you do. Great game.

I started rise of ronin 4 days ago. I was frustrated cuz for the first time I played a game where there was two diffrent block buttons. I kept dying to low level npcs screaming in my head what genius makes 2 block buttons?
I proceeded to get kicked for the next 3. And adapted fully on the 4th day. Ain't no game finna tell me IM weak.
Literally what I did was just calm tf down and started listening ti the sounds. Having it on high volume helped so I could hear the blade and footsteps. And from there I created a rhythm to counterspark
(The double block mechanism is actually genius. First time playing with such a mechanic but it adds a sense of real danger to the game. If your timing isn't millisecond perfect u can get creamed. And that's 100% your fault not the game. )

I play For Honor Ranked Duels as a Grandmaster player parrying 300 Ms attacks. I have played Nioh, Bloodborne, Demon souls, Dark souls, Lords of the fallen and loved playing them. I've PvPed in these games, and have called players casuals. What I am trying to get at though, is that I don't think it's a skill issue. It took a bit to get the hang of it but I'm now parrying about 70% of attacks and getting better. I think it's a problem with how important parrying is in combat. And once you overcome that, there's no other challenge in combat. The only other obstacles is learning a new NPCs moveset and getting the parry down for them. Combat feels very one-note and stale because of that. So I can say that parrying in this game, sucks. I only start checking these videos out because I was trying to find out, if there was any nuance I was missing.

What I was trying to get at, is that the fact the enemies in the game all have high levels of poise (hyper armor.) And to open them up you need to parry them. Which makes parrying a need and not just a tool/skill to use. In a game where you have find out your weapon's parry frames. Let alone figure out a ton of fighting styles attack timing. Which is so many variables people have to keep track of. So people are trying to find other ways to solve that. One of the ways, is to find broken moves/stances that the NPCs have trouble dealing with. So it makes the combat stiff at first, until you get better combos/moves to work with. That is what is turning people off about this game. It's a problem the first Nioh game had, which they smooth it out in the second game. People have work and family lives, they don't have the time to be a parry god.

Love this game, it is not over complicated, it took me around 10 hours and upgrades to have the combat click, but once it does…..very satisfying, crucial to understand you are using the correct stance against weapons and styles, the bottom right hand corner is your friend to understand what is going on, if the light next to the stance is blue you will be effective and stagger longer, if it is red they will recover almost immediately making fights very hard, also activating blade flash if memory serves rightly recovers your chi like Nioh 1&2 did, yes the weapon timing is different I would of been upset if it wasn’t, makes fights against all the weapons and using different ones fresh, stay with it I believe you will enjoy the pay off
