you cant really blame them, they followed the direction of his son, with his father not helping, to you know, try to get him to create his own work, also it was one of their first time creating 3d only, probably in a new way. The father since came out of retirement after this was released, probably due to shame no doubt, and hes working on a new anime. This is so epic, thank you for sharing this tutorial, i'm currently using Substance Painter for my Videogame Design and Programming carreer. That texture is gorgeous.
Love your tutorials and your 3D coloring book course! I -kind of- like texture painting, but if there is a procedural way to do it I'd rather go that route... saves my wrists/fingers. :) Thanks a bunch.
Thanks to substance I customized my own smart textures. All I need to do to get "my style" is to slap it ok the layer. Add some gradients and mask some bits and voila! Hand painting is now more of a case of "designing" of what textures go where. If you come from 2D like me. Do NOT get married to the idea of hand painting. Do as much via PBR shaders and you'll be surprised how fast you can create stuff.
I haven't painted, drawn, textured, coloured, sketched or done anything like that in decades. I wasn't good at it then, and so I never had interest in learning and it's all been a mystery to me. But you're really tempting me to give it a shot.
Thanks a lot for this tutorial! I would also love to see a step by step tutorial about creating a full stylized (Ghibli) environment in Unreal Engine. Is something like this maybe comeing in the next weeks?
I would love an actual anime style mmorpg (with skill systems like "you were hit x times with poison, now have level 1 poison resist" style, etc) and you can't learn everything and you can't be the master of every skill, you end up unique based on your own playstyle and story. Along with having the art style of studio ghibli, fuck yeha. that would be dope.
Just a tip, press alt + left click on your black mask under layers to change your view mode to mask. It's much easier than selecting mask from the Material dropdown.
Hi, I am starting my 3D artist's Journey recently.. I have been learning Blender, SP, Zbrush with UnrealEngine and I figured out it is never easy to use those tools without basic knowledge. So here is my question. Do you recommend to take the 3D Coloring book course before the 3d environment artist's survival kit ? or can I learn some basic things(like textuering) from the Environment artist's survival kit class as well?
Really cool video! I love ghibli style for 3d stuff. I have a question though. The material created with this process would be a procedural one, like there would be no tilling and etc in a large mesh, or is it a regular 2d tillable texture? Don't know if it's a stupid question but I'm new to this.
It's made with generators that apply to the whole uv space so there wouldn't be any tiling unless scaled and defined to tile. At the end where he makes this a smart material you can drag it to any mesh. you can look at the default smart materials and see how they work. hope that helps
Nice tutorial, but I am missing in 2:55 after you dropped tiny bit of height. How did you get half white and black? i am feeling that you skip the position gradient under mask editor setting generation??? please help.
All you gotta do to replicate that is create a new fill layer, add black mask, add position generator, and add a blur slope filter. then just mess with the colors and sliders to get the look you are going for.
If you really want to use 3d for your 2d environments the best way is to just use projection masking. Then again the Ghibli style is actually a pretty damn easy style to imitate because of the flat cell shaded colouring it mostly just requires stamp brushes so you might as well just paint it entirely in Photoshop, it's actually faster.
@N0D3 Yeah well it depends a lot on your own painting skills of course but it's still a lot faster to paint these type of backgrounds than model them and create cell shaded materials. The only reason to do this is if you have a complex camera movement in your shot which is rarely the case. Would mostly occur in an action scene.
Is it highly recommended to create these textures in substance painter? Or can I still do the same thing in photoshop? Thinking critically about getting this course.
Just a question about your Substance Painter course, does it include other kinds of anime textures? I'm thinking about taking it. Thank you for your time.

This looks great. I have a question, I wanted to get your coloring book and see that it comes with Ghibli Smart Materials. What are the smart materials? would they allow me to convert any texture to ghibli style like this?
Smart Materials can be used to just drag and drop on your object/the part you want it to be on with help of a black mask. For example a metal smart material would already provide you with the right properties which you can adapt to your liking for example Colour, Roughness etc. Hope that helped :)
you need to bake a position map on your mesh. for that, you can go to bake mesh maps, check box the position map, and check "use low poly as high poly mesh" (unless you have a high poly mesh)
All you gotta do to replicate that is create a new fill layer, add black mask, add position generator, and add a blur slope filter. then just mess with the colors and sliders to get the look you are going for.
