A breakdown of my recent short film "DARKSIDE".
In this video, I'll take you behind the scenes of my recent short film. I’ll breakdown the cinematography and lighting for this short film and show you the process of how I made a short film with no budget and made it look like an A24 quality short film.
If you’re wondering how to make a no budget short film then I’ve got a few tips in this video just for you. But there is also a lot of information about cinematic lighting and behind the scenes cinematography here.
I made this as a cinematic short film tutorial and to help you improve your cinematic filmmaking. If that is something you’re into this behind the scenes short film breakdown is just the thing for you! I hope you enjoy it!
As you might notice this short film was inspired by the JOKER, which has to be one of my favorite films when it comes to cinematography.

Thanks for the great collab, was awesome to work with you guys! Also really like the Behind The Scenes, you can learn a lot from Stijn, curios for upcoming projects!
Thanks Simon! Looking forward to our next collab 🙌
I am a big fan of the Joker and this gave off that vibe very well.
Great performance Simon. I'm sure we will see you in some feature project in the future.
Thank you!
@@cichy8386 Thank you so much!
It's unbelievable how much work there is in a short movie
Yes, can you imagine a full length feature film?! 😅
We want more short films like this man😊
Thanks 👍
This video is so underrated. :o Thanks for the great information it helped me a lot!
@@loovider really glad to hear you liked the video 🙏
And ladies and gents, welcome to the 16:24 long super learning curve.
Brilliantly informative and awesome BTS view.
I wish I have that many lights 😂
Keep the good content coming, it is very useful for beginners like me 🔥🔥🔥
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video and that it was helpful to you! 🙌👋
Thank you for sharing your color grading techniques as well... Beautifully done.... Amazing job and amazing acting...
Glad you enjoyed it man! ✌️
Nice work ❤, Keep it up, can u film a emotional short film .
Thanks a lot! 🙌
This short film looks very nice, was wondering what codec you used for the Sony a73? HS, S, or S-I?
Inspiring Christian filmmaker here! 🙏🏾🔥this is amazinf
Where did you find the refrence photos?
There are a bunch of websites for movie stills like Frameset, Filmgrab, Film Vibes, Shot Cafe, Shot Deck, ...
Thank you so much for this! Truly inspiring keep working hard and God bless you in everything you do🙏🏾🙌🏾
Really appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed it 🙌
just wanted to say i came here from another video, and was thinking man this footage is heavy on the joker vibes
Yea, there is no hiding it! Hope you enjoyed it nonetheless!
very beauiful video
Thank you very much
Thanks Stan. That was a helpful insight into multiple aspects of film making. I'm a long term photographer trying to get up to speed with video production. I liked and subscribed - this makes me realise I still have lots to learn. You may downplay your colour grading capabilities but although I recently bought a Studio license for DaVinvi I still have lots to learn. As a photographer perhaps I understand composition, framing and lighting most, but really need to get out, practicing, shooting, editing.
Thanks for watching and subbing, glad you liked the video! I guess there's always new stuff to learn, which in itself makes all of this so exciting! 😃🙌
when BHS is better then the actual film ! amazing thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks 🙏
@12:26 i actually think it looks better without the edge light. The contrast on his face is really good. Maybe flagging it and having it just touch the chair would make a really yummy sandwich.
Could have definitely also been an option!
Thank you times infinity for the behind the scenes and jewels you dropped in this video!! I can't wait to see what you do next! The short film was insanely good!.
Really appreciate it and I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it so much!
Great vid. One request. Links to the lights, or just their names listed here? You use many. It would be great to figure out which were which. Thanks.
So from the looks of it the scene at 6:45 was really lit up but you made it look moody in post? Bring down exposure, etc?
You are correct. When shooting SLog 3, it's best not to expose to dark but then make it dark in post
@@SightseeingStan I use a canon R6 with clog3 and a smallhd 7 touch and still underexpose my image. I know I still have things to learn about lighting but man every time I shoot my video i feel its too bright but then i get into post and its completely underexposed... so frustrating
@@joshrathbun1 just keep in mind that any Log profile looks "brighter" but when converted or graded it will be darker. That's why should shoot brighter then "correct" exposure. Just keep an eye on your histogram or scopes and expose brighter than what you would but without anything clipping.
@@SightseeingStan on the 600c what did you set the intensity to? Sorry if I missed that but not sure it was said
The code isn’t working
Did you select a "Pro" subscription? What did it say then?
Super cool, thanks
Glad you liked it!
BUT where is the shortfilm?
It is linked in the description. Or here: ruclips.net/video/JzujzHI0qLo/видео.html
It's not a film tho. There's no story, it's just a guy being weird
💀💀💀
Bro plz tell me wich camera is good for night cinematic videos for reels 💥
Depends on your budget!
@@SightseeingStan 4000 dollar
@@jpj903 i'd recommend a Sony a7siii or FX3
Thank you very much for sharing this
Glad you enjoyed it Mike! 🙌
