Hi Jenny, that's so amazing you got to enjoy concerts at The Granada, it would be amazing if you could get in contact with Geoff on his website shown in the description as he would love to know your historical stories about Tooting and the concerts you went to at The Granada.
Big up to Geoff, been on his guided walks and talks at All Saints Tooting, always interesting and so enthusiastic about the area... I'm not from the area but it is so easy to be swept away by the history and diversity of such a vibrant part of South London
Loved this thank you. My nan lived in Mellison Road and we visited often in the late 60's and early 70's. Loved the organ in the cinema! My aunt and cousin lived in Garrett Lane - had no idea they had such famous neighbours :-). Think St George's is where my Grandad died; a fireman in WWII. Thank you.
Thank you Mary for your message, yes it was great to collaborate with local historian Geoff Simmons to film and edit this tour of Tooting. If you are interested in finding out more about the local area you can click on Geoff's website link in the description.
It is a great hospital I too was born there, I'm glad you learnt a few things in this video. Geoff Simmons is a great local historian, if you'd like to know more about the local area you should have a look at his website here: summerstown182.wordpress.com
Many thanks for your time to show us around during lockdown , moved to Tooting for 3 years now but never went into the casino and knowing how amazing it looks inside ! Looking forward to join the walk in the future
When living in a time where going on so called “fancy dates” and “destination weddings”, how cool is it to find a group that are local history buffs and go exploring round town for its past over a weekend? That can be some adventure 😁 Do newspaper ads still work, is that a thing anymore? 😩
I grew up in Tooting and attended many pop concerts at the Granada including the Beatles. It was said at the time that the house in Trevelyan Road was like a rock tour B&B and that the Beatles stayed there? I was at the stage door when they arrived by black taxi and made the short dash into the building.
Thanks for sharing your story Alan, that must have been quite a thrill seeing The Beatles at the Granada. If you are interested in finding out more about the local area you can click on Geoff's website link in the description.
Yes, we have only limited information about The Beatles staying on Trevelyan Rd. Geoff went on local radio a couple of years ago asking if anyone knew more, with a view to placing a Blue Plaque on the house. Yet still, not enough was forthcoming to warrant the plaque. You could be the person to swing it for us. State more of what you know on here and anything's possible.....
@@johnbyrne2756 The word was that a house in Trevelyan Rd was used as "digs" for the many touring artists etc at the time. Every major UK tour included the Tooting Granada. Times were far simpler then and those tours were a rollercoaster, if that was where an artist was booked they just got on with it. Local people must know what house it was, especially if it was on a regular basis, which I believe it was. When I was about 13 Jimmy Saville compered a touring pop show at the Granada. Through a connection between the Streatham Locarno and the boys & girls exhibition in central London, I spent a short time in his dressing room. He was totally normal, nothing happened. I do remember he said, "you do your best and your bollocks".
@@alanmeech69 Thanks a lot for this info Alan. As we stand the actual house is known and one story goes that Macca went to buy fish & chips which was brought back to the others. Geoff has a fair amount of this type of stuff but it's all a bit patchy and possibly unreliable. More 'concrete' facts are needed before he'll act... Thanks again....
Congrats Geoff - Not a local, but thoroughly enjoyed listening and watching to every second of your fabulous local history tour video! Great knowledge and passion for your area, and coverage of its diverse histories. Looking forward to the Marc Bolan's Teenage Dream Zoom meeting on March 25 - hey, we bought a velvet jacket cos of him! And the silly, wide-brimmed hat must have been his doing, or was that Jimi Hendrix's?? :-)
Thank you Jack, Geoff Simmons has so much knowledge of the area, you should check out his website for more historical facts: summerstown182.wordpress.com/
Glad you enjoyed it, Geoff Simmons is a great local historian, if you'd like to know more about the local area you should have a look at his website here: summerstown182.wordpress.com
Greater London has such a rich history. I'd like to see Anerley/Crystal Palace Park area covered; including Gypsie Hill and Dulwhich village. Streatham, Croydon (Purley, Shirley, Addington) Croydon Airport, Beckenham/Bromley, Biggin Hill and so on.
George Cole was born in Tooting at 19 Defoe Road. In 1925 ,when he was born, Defoe Road ran from Gambole Road to the junction with Tooting High Street it was changed in the late 40's to Garratt Lane
Thats really interesting to know, I'll let Geoff know about this. In the meantime if you'd like to know more about the local area you should have a look at his website here: summerstown182.wordpress.com
