There's a line or two in the movie that gives away why Rumi might've been that way. The male manager guy tells her in one of the scenes that times have changed since Rumi was a pop idol, and Mima's role in Double Bind is the turning point that decides whether or not she will last in the spotlight as an actress. Rumi then says something along the lines of "well excuse me for not lasting", hinting that Rumi was once a singer who either never made it or did for a very short amount of time and her career never went the way she wanted it to. So I think Rumi was living vicariously through Mima while she was a singer and saw herself in her, almost as if she got to become a pop idol again, but it starts to spiral out of control when she becomes an actress. It makes the scene where she cries during the filming of the rape scene interesting... you think it's because she cares for Mima as a person and she's ruining her career, but the other way to interpret that is that's it's the defining moment that her second shot at pop stardom dies and might even be seeing herself in the scene.

    • @m.syauqiabdurahman2798
      @m.syauqiabdurahman2798 2 года назад +15

Yeah persobally my theory of Rumi see the rape scene
Rumi see the man near Mima when they acted out the rape scene as the man who tarnished Mima's pop idol because like you say
Rumi see herself in Mima and became obsessed to her meaning Rumi is actually a stalker (alias manager) but Mima didn't knew it until the reveal .

    • @davidmeir9348
      @davidmeir9348 2 года назад +16

Most likely because she knows that from that moment on, Mima could never, ever become a pop idol again, thus destroying Rumi's chance to live the pop idol life through mima.
The reason for that as I said in the comment I left above in the comment section, is because pop idol the way it is in Japan, is a specific Japanese concept that has no equivalent in the west.
Normal average girls who have an aptitude at singing and dancing and look nice are scouted by talent agents and groomed to become those perfect creatures that give the image almost of holy and unobtainable angels that teenagers can dream and fantasize on so they succeed and sell records.
Today the J-pop industry is a bit more relaxe and not as popular as it was in the 80's, but even today, these girls are supposed to represent the image of perfection and there are cases of J-pop singers who were found out to have a boyfriend and were berated by angry fans as it destroyed the image of the girl the fans want to be with.
It's kind of crazy and explains why this industry puts a lot of unfair pressure on these girls, something that the movie obviously tries to criticize.
So to become an actress is kind of tarnishing the image, something unacceptable for a J-pop singer, but add a rape scene?
After such a scene, there is no way the fans could have ever accepted her back as a j pop singer now that she was 'spoiled'.
Which is why Rumi was 'crushed' by the decision and decided to go along with her plan to drive mima insane and ultimately kill her through Me-Mania so she could preserve the 'innocent' image of Mima that now, in her delusion' she intended to accaparâtes for herself.
Also for the fact that Rumi was at one time a pop idol.
The movie shows that she is a chubby woman and it's possible that she didn't last long as a J pop singer because she did not represent the image of physical perfection expected from J pop idols whom the managers expected would be the envy of fans ready to spend their money to see them in concert.
So it's not far fetched to think that the chubby Rumi decided to become a manager to live the life of a J-pop idol through her clients and developed an obsession for Mima specifically.

Rumi always appears to be a mother figure to Mima, which is why she cries like that during the rape scene. She can’t bear seeing that be done to her surrogate daughter. It isn't a requirement to understand Japan's idol culture prior to watching this film, but it certainly helps make sense of some of what happens. The concept of graduation and fans being upset about a member leaving the group is portrayed realistically in this film. Idols are seen as pure and innocent and "available" to the fans. Leaving the group usually means leaving that behind. And not all fans take that very well. Idol culture is, in many ways, unhealthy for both the idols and the fans.

One thing a lot of people don’t remember is she cut herself on the teacup and bled quite a bit when Rumi was there. Her bloody blouse in her closet could have been from that incident the whole time. This movie is very good at making things go by so quick you forget the context they add to future scenes which helps make you feel as unsure of reality as Mima. A master class in how good editing can elevate a film beyond the individual scenes to something greater than the sun of its parts.

The movie set it up early on that Rumi used to be a pop idol herself back in the day, so she was definitely living her fantasy through Mima which explains why she was the one most against Mima changing her career.
The rape scene was the inciting incident that sets you up for the rest of the story. That was where Rumi started taking things in her own hands, Mima was psychologically affected, and the stalker started taking action to protect Mima's "identity" due to Rumi's manipulations. That's what the movie is about: the concept of identity and the acceptance of self with Mima. It also details just how easy it is for an outside perspective to distort one's identity.
What's scary is this film is just as relevant today as it was back then. Especially with the modern world and creating online personas through social media (RUclips, Twitch, Twitter etc.) We the audience can just as easily perceive you as something else when in reality how you are with your personal lives behind closed doors may be something completely different or less exaggerated than how you present yourself online. Its this whole concept of identity that's so fascinating.

To make the finale more mysterious a fun fact: rumi’s voice actress is who says “no I’m real” even tho it’s mima who says it soooooo it’s up to your interpretation on what happened.
Edit: also to further make the ending ambiguous the two nurses outside the hospital thought they saw mima but then said no that couldn’t be her. Implying either she is famous and don’t expect her to be visiting a mental hospital or it’s rumi tryna look like mima this plus rumi’s voice in the end is enough to leave the ending ambiguous.

I love when any piece of media messes with my head, this movie was able to show me Mima's degrading psyche perfectly imo. At the beggining when people started dying and we saw the creepy guy watching her I thought I knew where the story was going, it was your classic Psycho bussiness but no, when Mima started having visions I started doubting what I was seeing too since she is the POV character, by the middle of the movie there had been so many dreams and hallucinations thrown at me I felt like I couldn't trust Mima anymore and started considering that she had some real mental problems that made her an unreliable narrator, I was as confused and scared as her cause I didn't know what was real or not anymore.

The hand drawn art style between the late 80's and through the 90s definitely had it's own flare. There are so many small animation techniques that really give a show or movie an identity of it's own that just fell out once they started making all anime with computers.

I like how the movie doesn't cheat you.
There were clues throughout the film.
The fact that Me-Mania said that hegets e-mails from Mima is the only thing that makes sense because he put in the 'diary' things he could not have heard without being given inside info, like private conversations between Mima and Rumi.
For example when in the diary there is a quote of her saying how Eri (the actress on Double Bind) is another person when the camera isn't rolling, only Rumi heard that.
So yes, there were clues. This film is so well constructed, it's insane.
    A true masterpiece.

Fantastic movie and story-wise, one of the greatest anime ever.
What is immediately noticeable in Kon's work is his mastery of the editing.
He is the Edgar Wright of anime. His transitions are so smooth and well done that you truly can't tell when you pass from Mima's reality to her delusions and that helps make the movie like a fever dream.
There is plenty of symbolism and cues given by means of visuals.
Just an example. In the first scene where we are introduced to the stalker, Me-Mania, he is a security guard (he obviously took the job to be closer to Mima), and he looks at her trough his open palm while the space around her is kind of blurred.
We immediately are reminded of a statue or the little ballerinas in music boxes. Point is that he puts her on a pedestal and the blurring shows that he is oblivious of anything else but her.
Then when a can is thrown at her, the blurring disappear and he then goes to confront the troublemakers who 'dissipated' his moment.
Just in one frame, without any dialogue, Kon perfectly conveyed the state of mind of Me-Mania and how he sees Mima.
    Now, that's storytelling.
The song the group sings for most of the movie Ai No Tenshi (an angel watches over) is so great, I've learned the lyrics and it is my ringtone.
Kon's goal was to show the place of women in the entertainment industry and to what pressures they are put in.
The film OBVIOUSLY influenced Daren Aronofsky, you can see it in Requiem for A Dream where the bathtub scene where she plunges underwater to scream: "Bastards" is reproduced frame by frame, and, of course, in Black Swan.
Mima accepts things she doesn't really wants, like the nude pictures or the rape scene, because she can't say no, and that helps destroy and fracture her psyche.
You can do a phd just on the meanings of this movie.
Pls watch the other Kon films: Tokyo Godfathers (one of the greatest Christmas movies ever), Millenium Actress and Paprika (a clear inspiration to Inception, it's basically the same story minus the heist).
His one season anime tv show, Paranoia Agent is also suitably mind fucked.
P.S.: One thing you may have missed, near the beginning of the film, Tadokoro and Rumi talked together and Tadokoro said to Rumi: "You're not a pop idol anymore."
So Rumi was a pop idol in her youth but isn't anymore.
Now to know a bit about the phenomenon of pop idols in Japan, they're supposed to be those perfect, innocent looking girls.
A pop idol in Japan lost her job and was berated by fans when they found she had a boyfriend because girls in that industry are supposed to be this perfect image that fans can fantasize being with as the managers think will increase their popularity and thus: revenue.
You can see how Rumi is depicted in the film, as a chubby woman so it isn't far fetched that in an industry where the looks are so important, Rumi was shown the door out and she became an idol manager, living her dream through Mima and when Mima went into acting, especially after 'soiling' herself by playing the role of a stripper getting raped, destroying any chance to ever be an idol again (idol fans could never accept her back after that), Rumi fragile psyche cracked and she implemented her plan to have her killed and then replaced as Rumi started living the delusion she could be Mima instead of her and she was feeding Me-Mania's own obsession so he could do the job for her.

tthe confusion worked beautifully because it was there intentionally to mirror Mima's own psychological spiral. as the movie goes on, she gets more unhinged and stressed, and the cuts to different times and scenes get even more crazy. and it all builds up to this crazy ass reveal!

I think there's some context needed on Japanese idol culture to help add to the film's interpretation. I'm no expert, but from what I understand, female pop idols in Japan have tightly controlled public images the revolve around cuteness and innocence. Idols can be banned by their agencies or managers from having public romantic relationships because it disappoints fans and damages their "untouchable" images. Idols can also get in trouble for being seen smoking or drinking.
It's not just that Mima is a pop idol transitioning in becoming an actress. Mima is a pop idol transitioning into acting in a violent, sexual drama series. Where she stars in a rape scene in a sleazy club. While partially nude. And then a photographer takes a bunch of sexy pin up of photos of her and publishes them.
I think knowing this adds some important context to understanding the characters: It's why Mima has a crazed fan obsessed with protecting the "real Mima's" purity, why Rumi is so upset at the writer's adding a rape scene for Mima, and Mima's own conflicting feelings about her career shift and self perception. It's the madonna/whore complex cranked up to eleven and made worse by the fact Mima has to deal with the blow back from other people and herself.

They push new talent really hard to maintain a palatable image and connect emotionally with their fanbase. Hence, even people who barely chart will often have a small core of total diehards.

my belief is that early in the movie the animation "looks like" a normal 1990s low budget animation but that's just to disarm you into thinking "it's just another anime" but later on the quality gets better but at the same time the story is so gripping it becomes "real" and you don't realize you've been ensnared "by the film" and now you're in the movie and now you're feeling what Mimarin is feeling. And then slowly reality goes haywire and the events in the film causes you to have a psychotic break and you don't know what is real and what is not real anymore. What an achievement for a film to induce such an effect on the viewer, genius!, everyone stands up applauding but you realize you're still watching the movie... or are you? Did you finish watching or are you still trapped in the movie thinking you just watched a reaction but maybe that's just what they want you to believe? You are watching yourself reading the comments but you can still hear the movie playing, wait is this real?

Paprika a fantasy movie with traces of science fiction ( that by the way, sorta inspired Inception)
Millennium Actress a romance with meta Comment on movies especially old japonese movies
Tokyo Godfathers a drama comedy that is also a christmas movie
And ending with Paranoia Agent, that one is a series with elements of thriller and suspense but is really good, only have 12 eps i guess, talks about the many ways that the human psyche works.
And in a personal note, you guys could watch Gakkou Gurashi, it's not a Satoshi Kon's work, it's more a modern anime but is one mine favorites, but it's better watch not knowing what is about not even read the synopsis because is one of that animes.

This one is, legitimately, a mind-fuck. It is wonderful and yet so horrible all at the same time! Having watched it through a few times, I have a decent idea of what is happening where and when, but it really just jumps ALL over the place! It is very much an old-school no-holds-barred psychological thriller that does everything it can to disorient you as the audience, and it does a spectacular job of it. I also really do get what you are saying about the old-school anime aesthetic of it all. I'm not trying to dismiss modern anime, but I'm (disconcertingly) an oldtaku, myself, having been at the prime of my anime-watching career back in the early to mid 2000's, when I was in college. Heck, I remember attending the Seattle anime convention, Sakuracon, when it was still at the SeaTac Hilton with an attendance of 4745. I still remember when it moved to the Washington State Convention Center the next year... and the year I graduated, it hit 11,000 attendees. In any event, it was a pretty spectacular era in anime.
I from that kind of era, I would recommend Samurai X and Ninja Scroll for movies. I also have a special place in my heart for the series FLCL (or Fooly Cooly as it is called in America). It is only six episodes of concentrated insanity, but it has got a really good heart to it, and the last episode hits pretty hard for me. Another good anime movie would be Paprika. I enjoy that one a lot!

For me the point of the movie is not the all murders around mima. This movie erase the limits of the ficcion inside the ficcion with a lot of grace, some people says satoshi kon is the lynch (david) of the animation, but david is a little to obtuse in his vision of dreams, Satoshi use the dreams and the visual to tell a good history for all the audience, not just for niche. Rest in Peace granmaster
P.D: this movie is still relevant this day more than anytime cause the internet and the media is a hell with our identities like "who is the real me the one in the internet reacting, the one in the social webs, the one who write comments in youtube" and people can create a ilusion of you just with a few clicks and some little malice words ...so a really masterpiece, just ask Darren Aronofsky or Chris Nolan if they are tired to use ideas and visual from Kon films xd
