I FORGOT to add (because I have boys and I'm used to not having one) that you don't necessarily need a wheel, but if you have female rats I highly recommend it (Male rats tend to be less likely to use one but it's worth a try) but you need to make sure the wheel is big enough. 14 inches for females, and 16 inches for males, anything smaller for large adult rats could pose a risk to them. I have a video on my channel talking about wheels for mice and rats if you're interested in learning more but please just make sure they're the right size.
Just curious but would it matter for males if the wheel was 1 inch shorter?
Emiology my boys are wayyyyyy too lazy to get out of their hammock I think it’s because they don’t have an active layout at the moment as we are hopefully getting rats from a breeder Aurora rattery (Lyn hopefully) it was so sad about her kittens 😭 but the boys haven’t gotten an active layout as I’m waiting for the babies to come they haven’t done much around the cage 😂👍❤️
I have 5-month-old girls - is 12 inches okay?? It doesn't seem to bend their back but I'm no expert.
a1exdanvers I think it should be ok when they are small but it might be better to get a bigger one when they get older x
@@coireandtess4124 Thank you! :)

I was ordering everything on amazon and amazon seems very confused as to what kind of pet im getting
I know, I have only looked for rat stuff but it's like *"wOuLd yOu lIeK a rAbBiT hUtCh? hOw aBoUt a tInY hOuSe fOr dWaRf hAmStErS? oR bIrDsEeD?"* lmao
Lmao
@@skye5793 It's not even funny how accurate this is. I'll throw mine in, too: "hOw BoUt sUm RAT kiLLER???" No. No, thank you. Not trying to *kill* any rats. Scrolling through recommended products it's all, "water bottle, water bottle, water bottle, very badly reviewed lava ledge, water bottle, D Con Rat Poison." Thanks Amazon, I guess if making sure they're hydrated isn't going to happen, death is the next best option.
@@MaxflaxBeeblebrax oh my god, this happens all the time! i keep getting rat traps and poison and things like that pop up as well. 🤦♀️
When I've brought from pet shops it's the same. Dog and cat toys and treats, rat food, bird perches and toys. I also have a dwarf hamster so hamster food, reptile sand, coco soil, aquarium stones, small pet bedding... They always think I have a menagerie!
I love the cage, it’s so pretty! Whenever I think of IKEA, I think of animals like rats, hamsters and rabbits, I can’t go to IKEA and see it as a human shop anymore! 😂
Me who knows she'll never own rats because her parents would never let her: *watching and taking notes*
Noted honestly help a lot. If it’s a case of your parents not thinking your responsible enough, try to:
Take notes
Make a PowerPoint
If you have other pets, take really good care of them
Do jobs around the house and don’t expect to get paid
If it’s a case of them not liking rats:
Try to show them lots of videos of rats being sweet to show them how friendly they are
If it’s a case of them just not wanting pets:
Try to get them to understand how it can actually make you more responsible and it’ll give you something to do.
I’m not the best at advice but I really do hope this helps anyone who wants rats 🌻💛🐀
I try to have a rodent but mom said no so yeah but she did let me have a Guinean pig so yeah but she wants nothing to do whith them
@@luvfromrubyy I tried to ask for a dog but she said no so now i'm trying for a rat.
@@jenna7299 yes owning a rat Is like owning a dog
@@catpillow9130 ye that why I'm tryna get 1 and not a mouse because apparently mice never bond with you the same as a rat
My rats don't live in a cage, they live in a freaking kingdom. $850 floor to ceiling massive cage. With several hammocks to choose from, tons of chewing and foraging toys, a few pieces of fleece for burrowing, 8 water bottles scattered throughout, 6 floors to run up and down, more treats than they should probably be having, Tons of playtime outside the cage, and an almost broke owner who spent over $1500 on them.
I truly love my little beans
That's so cute! I'm planning on getting rats, hopefully I can get 3, so I'm doing all the research I can. 😆
@@INT-Jay well if you need any advice from an experienced rat owner, let me know
@@derpious267 what cage brand do you use for your rats?
This video explains perfectly why our first rats (two male adult rescues) we had when I was maybe 9 seemed to always be bored.
I'm getting two male rats of my own in a month or so, and I'm currently crocheting and sewing a lot of things for them, and this video was amazing!
Did you get them?
@@whensfood4934we need to know😭
Every time I try to crochet things for my rats they end up shredding it. 🥲
Our rats love their forage wheel, I find it stopped them hoarding food so much as well. Also I have put aquarium stones in their water bowl, initially just to stop them tipping it over but the stones are just small enough for them to pick up and the love the clacking noise when they pick them up and drop them!
I dont even have interest in owning rats but I still clicked as soon as possible
this could not have come at a more perfect time! I’m getting my first own rats in 2 weeks. although I have pretty much everything I need for them this was so helpful! I got new ideas and I still have time to make them happen. thank you! (I’m getting 3 babygirls I’m toooo excited to be a rat mom❤️)
One year update?
What are they like?
@@STIclinic dead
I hope they lived a good life, you meant everything to them
@@OlTimeyChara I teared up that was so sweet of you :(
My rat’s cage is so filled with bird toys because they work so well for them! Especially the climbing ropes and ladders!
This is such a refreshing gift in the midst of so much chaos. Your video couldn't have come at a better time! Thank you so much
i got my three boys two weeks ago and you’ve been a huge influence and a big help in my adventure into owning rats thank you so much for helping me prepare for my boys❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’m a parrot owner. And I feel like all the pet people just use everything from all stores
(Making sure that the items are safe of course)
When i saw you make that foraging toy my mind was blown, i was like: MUM ARE THERE ANY SPARE TOILET ROLLS??? 😂
Me rewatching this because I’m getting rats soon :)) I want them to have the best life possible
Love the way the white one jumped on the perspex like, “ hey dont forget me in the vid”
I'm not gonna lie I thought you said to avoid substrates that ARE kiln dried and dust extracted and I almost had a heart attack 😂😂
Haha noooo
I hear this to 😂😂😂
This came out literally right after I finished setting up a new cage for my 3 boys. It’s a Deluxe critter nation. It took me awhile to set it up but it’s definitely worth the money and time. It is SO BIG. They love it. The only thing I recommend if anyone gets it in the future is to make sure that you are putting the right things in the right places because there are double of the same things. It seems like it doesn’t matter but trust me, it does. Ily Emi❤️
I just re-did my cage! It feels so good to watch them explore. 🥰
FINALLY. IVE BEEN WAITING FOR ONE OF THESE FOR SO LONG
GamerGoo uwu same
Thanks so much, today is cleaning day for my three girls and this is a great video to give me more ideas for setup.
Me too! 🐀🐀
Weve just managed to buy a cat tree for my rats when they free roam🥰 I’m new to free roaming my babies as I haven’t had space so they’ve been running around on the sofa but I managed to move everything around and blocked all holes and now I have wayyyy more space 🥰❤️
I've recently bought rats and I was so afraid to over crowd the cage but seeing this im goingnto go out and buy everything for my boys
Love this! My 4 girls I have their cage busy and one week I’ll add basket then the next week I’ll take them out then add them again to keep it interesting along with any other goodie I find for them. Look foreward to your next video ❤️
Wispa and Twix have gotten so big! I hope they're doing well
This is so incredibly helpful I can’t stress that enough! Thank you!
Hi I really wanted to say a huge thank you to you!! ❤ we’ve just got baby rats and all of your videos are SO HELPFUL our cage has many of the items you’ve recommended like the ikea tie holder, bridge, hammocks etc and I’ve got the isamu food to give them plus I’m going to make my own now it’s just been so helpful all of your advise and me and my 2 kids really enjoy watching them thank you so much 😊
thank you for setting proper examples!!!!! I love your videos
I’ve been literally bingeing your videos and I clicked as fast as I could! I’m picking up my new female mice in less than an hour!
Okay wait hold up I just found you yesterday but I’ve been binging your videos and only NOW am I hearing you have a store?? This is incredible! You’re a one stop shop for everything I need to know while I prepare to get the rats I’ve dreamed of since high school!
This video is so useful! In doing lots of research before getting rats but I will be revisiting this video just before I get them.
I've been struggling with what I should order for my future rats to fill the cage, so this video helped me a lot ^^
Thank you so much for all the information in your videos. I haven't owned rats since I was a kid so I got very stressed trying to work my way around the best rat environment I can give them, bedding / substrate in particular was a big headache (a lot has changed in 25+years !). You're definitely my "go to" for everything now! 😁
Ps your rats are SO CUTE! 🥰
This video was super helpful! I am currently ordering my supplies and this gave me tons of ideas!
I really appreciate the video, it’s so helpful and fun to watch!
ive been wanting a video like this for so long
Thank you so much! I recently got two dumbo rats for Christmas! I named them Eliza and Peggy. Thank you for helping! 💞
Thank you so so much! I might be getting rats and I want to make sure I can give them the best cage possible. This helped a lot!
I don't know if you'll see this, but I just wanted to thank you so much
Great overview of a cage set up. Really useful hints and tips. Thanks 👍
Yesterday I got 3 new rats and this will be really helpfull, thanks!
Can't wait to set up my new cage. I love your rattos. They are so cute! Great cage ideas, thanks.
This helps so much! I'm looking into getting rats but I have no idea how to set up a cage so this is great. I really hope I can get rats but until then I will keep watching your videos and wishing!
im going to get rats soon so im looking at A LOT of stuff rn to make my cage the best home possible and this video was especially helpful!
Twix and whisper are so adorable and sweet!
Binder clips are great for hanging things too. They are lose version of what you see in a 3 ring binder. I have really big PVC pipe pieces for my rats, a T junction and an elbow. They never chewed them. I have also saved cardboard boxes of various sizes and Dunkin’ Donuts cups and other clean recyclables and made a rat playground maze thing. They loved that.
Even though i already have my rats this is still super helpful, thanks!
I was looking for a video like this! This was really helpful thank u
Omg setting up the rat cage is best thing ever seeing them sniff around all excited cause it is all clean is SOOOO CUTE bye the way love your vids your the person who inspired me to get rats I hope u get really far on this channel love u so much drone Rosie ❤️❤️❤️
I’m getting rats somewhere I’m between July and September and I’m so excited I have probably watched all your videos at least 3 times 😅
THIS IS GREAT BECUASE IM ABOUT TO SET UP MY RAT CAGE
GETTING MY FIRST RATS ON TUESDAY!!!
Good luck!😁
Ooo that’s exciting!! How are they??
How are you finding it? 🐀
I'm glad this exists. Im new to rats and my first one passed at 3-3 1/2 and he acted nothing like a rat from day one. He was super opposite and hated being touched and held. He enjoyed affection with something in-between you. I now have a new one that seems to be more normal and enjoys me petting him and holding him so trying to do things differently with this one. First rat didn't even like toys. He like burrowing some but hated toys. He loved his hammock though.
I’m going to get my first rats in a couple weeks and am setting up their cage now so I’m prepared and this helped so much!
I love Bumbles yawn at 1:22, it is so cute 🥰
I'm in the process of getting rats now! I'm so excited!
I just got 2 baby boys 2 weeks ago and I was wondering if you could make a video on bonding with your rats! I love your videos, they are always great!!!
Love this video, I definitely will be taking inspiration from this ❤
Also you can tell those ikea hangers are new because of how clean and white they are 😂💕
I'm getting rats and this really helped for what I need. I know the basics but finding specific things is quite hard.
You make the most helpful videos for rats and there actually fun
Loved this video! Would love to see more of these!
Just got our first rat yesterday and getting a friend for him tomorrow! Watching all your videos
I just cut up old clothes and tie it up with the fabric to make little diy hammocks, they don’t even need to be sewed!x
The ikea tie holder you can also find on Amazon. If you type in bird climbing toys you’ll find them! It was harder for me to find a normal white or brown color, because I’m doing a cottage theme, which has these colors: pink, brown, green, white, and purple.
Loving the content :) your rats are adorable!
best thing to wake up to!! a new vid from my fav rat youtuber
Awesome cage setup I don’t personally have any but it’s in a vision on mine for the future😎🤓
First!!!!!!!!!! OMG, I am getting new rats in a few weeks and OMG I am so excited. Thank you for posting this video I have been waiting for someone to make a video like this! Thank you so much Emi
Same I’m getting rats is 2 weeks 💜💜💜
Oooo that’s exciting!! How are they??
I'm getting rats on the 3rd so this really helps, thanks!
This video was SO helpful thank you!
i love how you make so much out of a pretty 'plain' cage! I'm watching your video now, getting my first rats saturday and just seeing how i should put in alllll the toys i got hahah
You helped me a lot with my rats, I had them for 5 months, their names are bubbles and blossom.
my rats pee where they sleep, probably WHILE they sleep and that spot just reeks after they wake up :))) at least i can just spot clean that quickly.
hahah same here. sometimes they just climb to the top of the cage (got a really tall bird cage) and pee from the top! once one rat even showered ME as i was reaching under the cage to get some things. I think I need to potty train them...
Thank you so much this was REALLY helpful
I've watched this video a lot to make sure I have a good idea of what my next setup will be.
i’m getting my boys in about 2 weeks!! so you can say i’ve been watching all your vids 😂 and makes me a little more nervous
Thank you so much for this video it really helped me set up my new rat cage u really have helped me so much I just want my rats to live the best life like there in paradise and u have helped me do that you are a amazing pet owner I want to be just as good as you have a great day or night we’re ever u are in the world 😁
Thank you so much!!! This is so helpful!!!! 🤩🤩🤩
I can’t wait to get my rats next month!💕
Such a good idea splitting the cage in half. I have the same cage as you and I’m currently having the cage divided as one of my baby boys has pneumonia unfortunately. I was wondering how you filled the little gap on one of the levels? Honestly loved this video :)
I know you wrote this question a year ago but if anyone else needs the answer just flip the tray around, the wire will fill in the hole. Or you can buy a replacement full tray and it will not have the hole for the bottom layer.
@@charlottesmom can I please ask where can I get the cage? I really need it for my 2 rats
Omg thx I asked for this love u your the best xxxx can't wait to get rats
This cage is so cute!
thank you I'm getting pet rats soon I've been doing research and I have everything I'm buying for them in tabs and I'm trying to make plans on what there beginning cage will look like this helped a lot
Update I got them there so cute
I recommend critter nation cage from Midwest.
You can get deep stainless steel pans for it from Base Equipment that I highly recommend.
Hehe I don’t have any rats but I have a hamster and he’s chilling next to me while I’m watching this and he just gave me the dirtiest look when he heard the word rat 😂😂
I needed this video 😭 tysmm
I got rats 2 days ago and this video is perfect!
Love it so much more without the shelf the CN comes with! Feels more open
Great video love it have a pawtastic day
Them you so much this video is really going to help me 😍🐀🥳
Hey there! I LOVE the idea of scatter feeding, but have a question. How do you know they are eating enough? I've always had the problem of not knowing how much to feed them because if given the chance, they would eat all day 😂 but with scatter feeding in the bedding, how do you know they are eating enough if you can no longer see the food? ❤ thank you!
You’ll know depending on their condition and by weighing them on a regular basis if you’re worried ☺️ depending on the food they need about 12-15g each per day but if you can still see food in the bedding wait until they’ve eaten it to feed the next lot
I was wondering if you were going to post something like this! :)
Edit: I recently had a mouse with either a mild respiratory infection, or a cold. She has since recovered, but I was wondering if you could do a video focusing on how to provide supportive care for rats and mice whist they're on antibiotics.
I thought my mom wouldn't like it but I told her I was thinking of getting a couple of rats, but she said if i'm taking good care of them it doesn't really matter to her
doin my research noww:D
thank you!
nice cage! your rats are so lucky :)
I've had my pet rat midnight for 1 year now his friend moon died about a week ago, today I decided to get him 2 12 week old male friends and everything's going well so far but the cage is very boring with no play toys and stuff so I have just ordered stuff off amazon thankyou for the help I love your channel!! Xx
I also wanted to have a pet that I can talk to and play to everytime Im feeling alone or sad and thinking of a white mice is unexpected for me but white mice is just so cute that I wanted it to be my pet. And Finally My sister told me she have white mice and its pregnant so she's going to give me its children and I am so excited about it... and Thanks Emi for your videos I love it so much!
I watch this every few times I redo my rats cage, what ingredients are in the mix do you make? I'd love a tutorial so I can switch off of feeding them oxbow. :)
If u want to give the corner toilets more support for hanging them mid cage height using bamboo sticks works amazing!!! I use the ones meant for supporting plants they are sooo cheap i get 6-10 120cm ones for less then a Euro. U can just cut them easy to the needed lenght, they are easy cleanable.I cut them and just put them under the toilets corner to corner zip tie them and done. Works also for other things then toilets that needs support. I use way less zip ties like that then with supporting stuff with zip ties themselfes and it makes cleaning so much faster without redoing so many of them.
