- SO AFTER YOU CHANGED OUT YOUR LIGHT BULBS YOU REALIZED YOU FAN LIGHTS STILL DON'T WORK. Yeah thats an issue. Here is why! For details checkout this blog post. the36thlock.blo...
its the limitor t160 in the home depot ceiling fans from Hunter.
thank you so much! wow! worked like a charm!
Thank you!
Everyone can thank our government for this Problem, The DOE (Department Of Energy) had a law passed to have these (power limiters) put on all ceiling fans, Hunter, Harbor Breeze etc, it is a grand scheme to lowery energy usage .Mine went out after about two years of service. With a little head scratching and research i figured it out. Great video, thanks for the help
Almost two years later and you saved me a hundred bucks. Thank you for the video!!!
James Johnson you are welcome
This was SO HELPFUL! My husband was going crazy trying to figure out why the fan would turn on but not the lights. He couldn't believe there could be any problems with a new Hunter ceiling fan!!! He spent a lot of time checking the wiring and wall switches before he watched this video. God Bless You for going out of your way to help other people fix this problem!
Hey man, thanks so much. Same exact model, I actually pulled up this video as my old man drove us to Home Depot, I even had the light fixture in my lap. We literally broke out in a fit of incredulous laughter in the parking lot as we pulled it out, and saw carbonated soot on the wires. Works just fine, saved money, keep up the good work, brother.
glad i could help.
3 yrs later and ur video still helping ppl. Good stuff man tnx.
Thanks for posting this. I have taken the light kit down and had no idea where to start after new bulbs, testing the light switch. You saved me from some very intemperate language and a trip to Home Depot for a new fan. Nice work!
dude for years this has been bugging me with both the units we have! I never found a "fuse" when I originally tried fixing it so i gave up. idk why I had the ambition to rip them apart again today but before I started cutting wires I figured I would search youtube to see if anyone else had the same thing going on and already figured it out, and sure as shit you did! Thanks man!
Hey Mayhem. Thanks for the video. Bought a Hi end Hunter a little over a year ago and bulbs blew out and it never came back on. Glad I found your video and you saved me a lot of money and headaches. Not to mention time. Rock on brother.
Thank you so much!! Had the exact same issue and exact same solution. Would have never been able to solve this without your video. Called Hunter customer service and naturally they were no help so thank you!!
This video saved me a lot of time, frustration and money. This was my exact problem. Thank you for taking the time to share with others!
This fix worked perfectly. I had already replaced one light fixture, but ran across this video before I replaced the other two Hunter units that were doing the same thing. It literally took me 10 minutes to fix both of them. Thank you!!
Absolutely awesome help! I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out this light. I almost scrapped the whole thing. Thanks man....love the real life going on in the background....just like my house
no problem!
Thank You for this video!! My fan has been broke for years and I decided to fix it tonight!! This was the problem!!! Some people call it a “thermal switch.” Idk, but it’s eliminated now and I got lights!! THANKS AGAIN!!
This video was very helpful. Thank you. All the other sources I consulted said to replace the pull switch but I tested it with a continuity tester and knew it was good. Had it not been for your video I would not have discovered the limitor was the problem.
I had this EXACT same problem. This video is the only thing I could find anywhere that was helpful. I bought a hunter fan brand new one week ago. I removed that small piece like you explained and viola now we have light! Also - Hunter included lights that DO NOT fit the sockets. Wish I had a bought a different brand.
Thanks for the fix, we've been in the dark for a couple of weeks. Replaced the wall switch, the toggle and the bulbs only to find your fix worked immed. Thanks for taking the time to put this on youtube - Good Karma to you.
Hi what if the fan light kit does not have that little white wattage limiter ?.
Thank you so much for making this video. Two and half years later I was able to fix my light. I loved the fan so I did without the light for about a year. Once I followed the steps in the video. I now have LIGHTS!!! YAY!!!
Just remember that is only what I did. Not what you should do. If you opt to do it, that's on you. I am not an electrician.
Thank you so much for this video! I was just installing two brand new$269 Hunter Great Room fans and could not figure out why the light wouldn't work. I had resolved to calling our electrician back (newly built house) but thought I would check RUclips first. I am sure glad I did! Thanks again.
Thanks! You saved the day today... I thought I narrowed the issue down to the switch housing assembly, but couldn't order one from Hunter since they're obsolete. So, I searched the web for other options and found your video. I bypassed the limitor and have light again! I'm using LED lights, so hopefully temperature is not going to become an issue, but will look into getting a new limiter in the future.
Wow! Dude! I wish I had found your video BEFORE I went ahead and messed up my ceiling fan! When the light went out with a bright "flash" when I tried turning it on, I assumed it was the light switch that burned out. So I replaced the switch but no avail. Further circuitry testing hinted that something went bad inside the motor housing but I didn't want to poke around further. Meanwhile, by replacing the light switch, I could no longer put the glass bowl back up, so I went ahead and ordered a new one. LESSON LEARNED!! Since the new one is also Hunter, I'll know what to do the next time it conks out on me! MANY THANKS FOR POSTING!
Many , many thanks! I went through so much effort: checking wiring circuits, swapping light kits - Hunter customer service was of no help. I was ready to replace the fans (two with the same problem on a 3-way switch). You saved the day!
you tube is my go to for almost any answer, theres always somebody that has the issue that im dealing with. your my hero of the day. thanks so much, fixed in no time
Lee Boshears you are welcome my friend
You’re the BEST!!! I bought a new light kit and replaced the light switch...neither worked. Thank you so much!
Worked great for me. Changed out a perfectly good pull chain light switch and still no lights before finding this video = problem solved. Thanks again.
THANK YOU!! Like so many others, this has been driving us CRAZY!!!! Your fix worked perfectly, and was well-explained. Thank you!!!
I have a different, no name fan, similar silly switch. That thing has been driving me nuts every time I have tried to figure it out. Thank you!
no problem. be safe. enjoy your light.
Thank you! This was the issue with my fan/light, and with your diagnosis I had quickly bypassed the burnt out limiter. Now the light are LED and maybe pull a total of 22 watts, so the limiter is unnecessary anyways.
Man that is a lot. Mine pull 4.5 watts each.
This is why the internet is flipping awesome. I replaced the pull switch, nothing...was getting ready to order a whole new light kit and then BAM!...I find this gem. Thanks for posting your video...I feel like a master electrician
Why didnt i see this a few hours ago. Just went out and bought a new freaking fan from Lowes! Boy am I glad I just looked at the limiter as you had and cut it the eef out, wired nutted them up and bingo, light working. Thaks a million.... Now I can get back my $160.00 bucks!
Oh BTW we all know you love Captain America. No worries I like the movies too.
thanks man, this worked on my 52106 hunter builder indoor ceiling fan.didnt think i had one, then you pointed out the little label, they had it tucked away hidden. chatted with Hunter for help, they just wanted me to buy more crappy parts.
Thank you! Your video is one of many which mention the same fix, but that made me feel confident this was the right answer before I started taking things apart.
Thanks man. You just saved me from buying a new lamp unit for my Hunter fan. Nothing looked charred and I would not have thought to even check that little device. Mine did have different markings on it, but looked the same. I just unplugged it from the snap connectors and the other 2 ends just snapped together...not that anyone should actually do that.
I am so glad I searched this. I just installed a Hunter fan and I have power going to the sockets, but the lights won't come on. However, before I put it all together, I checked with my voltage meter and my main wires had power but the little wires did not. I was puzzled, but I kept on treading. Now I know. Thanks!!
That was the problem. Thanks so much for the video. I don't normally comment, but it was very helpful and helped saved a good bit of money. I found the replacement part on EBay for $6.75, so I'm going to go ahead and replace it to be on the safe side.
can you post a link to the replacement part, and did it work?
Love the kids doing their thing. Jumping on the bed baby crying. Something fell. Dad doesn't sweat the small stuff
Man after 2 years of the light not working it now works thanks to this video.
OMG... never would've figured that out...awesome! I knew it was some kind of capacitor or something up in the housing. I multi-metered everything below and thanks to you, only blew $5 at Home Depot on what I thought originally was a bad/stuck (WD40) switch...Felt compelled to use the new one anyway...Not sure what that protects from a heat prospective, but I switched from incandescent crappy bulbs to LED's that use virtually no wattage/amps and give off no heat...
steve smirl glad it helpef
The failure of this Limitor device was the fault in my fan light kit, also. I just unscrewed the wire nuts attached to each lead of the Limitor device (my leads were pink and white), and removed it from the circuit. Just like here, I joined together the black leads that were originally attached to the Limitor wattage or current limiting device, using one of the leftover wire nuts. Result: my light kit is working again!
The Limitor device failed due to shorting of the light bulb circuit when I was attempting to change a bulb that was stuck in socket and ended up being twisted off. Poof!
Thanks so much for this very helpful video tip.
Mayhem. Thank you. Fixed the light within a couple minutes. Couldn't find anything online and glad you said it s not replaceable cause I would have kept looking. Thanks again.
I was corrected and found you can replace it and have pinned the link for the replacments in comments
Thanks for this. This thing went and blew two bulbs in the process. Fortunately they were the old Incandescents it came with. Mine was the easier version you menioned in the video. It was hard to find, have to follow the pink wire. It was hidden pretty well. There was no identifiable markings on it.
Wish I would give a 1000 likes. What is with all the downvotes? I mean this video was really helpful.
One suggestion I would have is to detach the power connector on it so you can more easily work on it in a well lit area. Seemed pretty uncomfortable doing it like that.
Looks great, and with a brighter bulb installed that’s all the light you need. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxWF88GpljEn-0o34vtLFazEQ5h5Q33SjU As far as ease of installation- this was my first ceiling fan and it took about 3 hours because I had no idea what I was doing and also it’s helpful to have a second set of hands and a magnetic drill bit. Works great.
Thank you! Saved us a bundle. By the way, while in there, I replaced the curs-ed halogen bulb component with an 11 Watt (but still VERY bright) dimmable LED and mini base for about $12; we will not miss the heat and arc-welder-level power consumption (well almost) of halogen.
Thanks so much, took mine out and light works again. First I went to Lowe's, where I bought the fan, to see if they sell that part and they don't. Thanks again for showing us the problem.
Great family and thanks for the instructional video! You've helped hundreds of people with this info!
Thanks for the video man!!! Solved my problem with hunter fan! I replaced my pull-switch first to no avail, then I found your video and pulled the little doohickey out
2024 and you still helping folks, thank you for your video!
Thanks for the video, mine did the same thing, and I was looking for the one that was in the older fans, didn't even see it hidden in the wire bundle. Just an FYI, you can unplug the harness, and work on the wiring on a bench ;-)
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! This solved my problem immediately. This fan has been driving me crazy!
Too funny! I hooked up the same ceiling fan up 2 weeks ago. I did not attach the light assembly, just the fan. I disconnected the 2 wires to the light assembly and installed the fan. A friend told me to attach the light assembly, since it would look better. I did just now. I hooked up the 2 wires I disconnected. The fan worked, but not the lights. I switched the wires and the same thing. I took the light assembly down and it was wired wrong. I connected the thin white to the thin pink, the thick white to the thick white and the black to blue. Everything is working just fine now. Then I came across your video and laughed. It must have been a friday afternoon when our fans were wired.
Great video! This was my issue. I measured the impedance of the T160 after removing it, and got about 500k Ohms. High but not infinity. I expected if it was the culprit it would be an open circuit, so FYI to others.
OMG! THANK YOU THANK YOU! Removed that energy limiter and wired them together and PRESTO! Works perfectly now!
OMG OMG THANK YOU SOOOOOO FREAKING MUCH we had a light go out and we got two different new light kits that didn't work but your video solved the problem I can't believe it we had been months without a light your awesome and I finally have light thank you!!!!!!!!
i know . the first time we had the problem we actually called them and made them send us a light kit. they don't even know its the problem. We went without light for days. Then i just decided to break into one and see what was up. like i said we have had 5 of these go out. Glad I could help.
It was a simple fix for sure! I did mine this week, Hint! replace your old hot incandescent bulbs with cooler LED bulbs. And take the light fixture off by unplugging unit! Much easier
Good night. Your video helped me today. I took off my breaker and was my own technician and took out that thing that cause problems. Thank you very much
Wow .. it worked. At first I wanted to dislike you video because of the poor quality and the baby screaming in the background. But now that I disconnected the resistor and attached the two wire. Boom ! I have light now. That deserves a big thumbs up.
Thank you for posting this video.
Thanks Bud, just fixed mine using your expert tip. I"m an electrician and have no idea why they out that in there nor why they would need to, other than the obvious .... sell more light kits.
It's so you can limit the energy and prevent a fire hazard.
Cool! Hubby and I had the same issue with our ceiling fan. Thanks for making this video! We'll try this method before we trash that thing. Thanks!!
I called Hunter because of this problem on a 2 month old fan. They said they would send me a replacement capacitor. So I suggest if the fan is not old, you try contacting HUNTER for the part.
Its good that they finally listened. Back when this was filmed they only sent out the light housing because they didnt know why it was doing it. Good to see they listened now if they would just solve the issue.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! This exactly fixed my problem. I would have never figured this would on my own. Replacing the thermal limiter is simple and cheap. This fix worked on my Hunter Type 2 Model ceiling fan.
Thanks for taking the time to make the video. Super helpful!
thanks! worked like a charm, and fixed it in about 10 minutes! If I can find a replacement for that safety switch, I will buy one and put it back in.. who knows, that safety switch was just doing its job, and may have prevented a fire. So if I can, I will replace it. Thanks for the tip!
yeah you never know then again look at all the comments. If hunter has this many fire issues with their products i think there is a greater issue. Like I said I am not an electrician and recommend everyone commenting buy a new fan. I didn't but everyone watching should.
Perfect fix! Thank you! Mine had two pink wires that were quick connected to black and blue. I snipped the two pink and wire-nutted them together. Voila!
Thanks for the info on a newer version of these fans. I did what you suggested and it worked. I did however run into a snag. Did the pink wires as you stated, but didn't realize I had to plug the black and blue with quick connects together. Thanks so much
Glad I could help.
Thank you very much sir! You've save me from buying a new fan. Thanks 😊
Positive temperature coefficient thermistor. It limits the current going to the bulbs by dropping resistance as they get hotter.
It works like you girl friend, the hotter she gets, the lower her resistance is! Easy way to remember. They make NTC thermistors also. They work opposite. No fun there!
Had the same problem after a bulb shorted out. Thanks for the video!!!
Thanks for the video. Saved me from having to replace the whole fan.
Thank you! This worked!! You saved us a lot of headaches.
Fathering done right. Kudos to you for showing your son how to do this.
Looks fantastic, how long is it? I am surprised that even new, there are problems. I was watching a video with a guy that bought a 2 year old Prevost with 6000 miles and he put $15,000 into it the first 6 months. The interviewer said it was common to spend money on even new units in the first year. I was surprised that within 2 years, lots of parts are no longer available. Have fun and follow the sun. Love your videos
Fantastic! Great Fix! Works like a charm now! Just hoping it's a safe fix!
Thanks so much for your advice. I admire how calm you are while filming that and having your little boy helping. :) (I could learn from that too! lol!)
Thanks for this vid! Gonna be removing that little white limitor from my fan today and just bypassing it without replacing it.
I'm going over to a friends house to check this out. Hope it works for us. Thanks for sharing this great information.
let me know how it works for you
Thank you for posting this. Mine actually had a quick connect on it so I simply unhooked it and reconnected the circuit taking the protector out of the line. Easy peazy. I never place over-sized wattage bulbs in my light fixtures so I'm not too concerned with replacing the protector although I probably should replace it.
This video still holds up. Thank you!!!
could not figure out if that was my kid crying upstairs while watching this.... LOL
we've been trying to figure out the issue... thanks so much it works perfectly now!!
Good video, HUNTER screwed up on adding this device as it causes trouble from coast to coast. Like you stated, and I agree, simply unplug the two pink wires where they connect, and take this little thermal device out of circuit. Plug the Black and blue wires together, reassemble and you will have light.
Great advice! Thanks! (P.S. It's easier to work with the wiring in the light part if you disconnect it at the connector and work sitting down somewhere... just saying :-) )
Wow, thank you for the amazing instructional! I was able to get my lights working in less than 5 minutes!
Thanks dude! I was ripping my hair out thinking I was going to have to replace the fan.
Just Want to say thanks!!! This Video really helped a Lot!!! I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out this Problem!! Thanks!!!
I work for one of the big name stores. I won't name names but I had a couple come in today talking about having to buy a new fan because their light quit working. I told them to bring the light assembly in and I could check something on it maybe save them from spending money on a new fan. I was ready for this issue. as soon as I saw that thing in the light, I knew it was the issue. tested it on my meter and sure enough, it was bad. but what really really got me worried was the wires the company used for this light. everything seemed normal but the limiter as he is calling it in the video was wired up with 20 maybe 18 gauge wire way smaller than all the other wire inside. It seemed very undersized for 110ac
Awesome!!!!!!!! problem solved with only $5 light switch; if I would have discovered video sooner, would have lost no money! Thanks!
Thank you. We followed your directions and the light works beautifully.
I am so glad We could help.
OMG. Man. Thank you so much for this video. It was driving me nuts. Simple fix
I was going nuts trying to figure out the problem. thanks for the video very helpful.
dude, that's brilliant... if you are ever in buffalo, ask for dino, i owe you a beer (or x6)
This works! You saved me a bunch of money! Thank-you.
Hi. This "fix" worked perfectly for our 3 year old fan. Thanks.
I just installed d a new hunter, looks like the same one you have in the video. had same issue right out of the box. before I saw the video, It was a simple disconnect the quick connectors, and clip the blue from harness to to the black feeding the light switch, can Wamo! everything work as it should. good video, thanks.
Awesome video saved me from buying a new fan or light fixture!
This worked great, thanks a lot! You just saved me $140 from buying a new similiar ceiling fan.
Sweet! just watch out for the wattage of light bulb you use.
Thank you so much. Me and my son did this in close to 2 minutes
This was my exact problem. Thank you for providing this video. Engineered Obsolescence?
No, Over-Extension and Overreach of Government. A Federal law in 2007 required ceiling fan manufacturers to include a wattage or current limiting device in the circuitry in order to keep consumers from placing bulbs of greater wattage than design specifications, either from a fire safety or energy efficiency standpoint. Kind of like Obama and Democratic-controlled Congress outlawing continued manufacture of 100W incandescent bulbs.
Jazz and Blues Cultural Heritage as
That was the problem for us, you nailed it! Thanks!
thank you so much! I have 200 of these fans, and it's a constant issue. I will now no what to do. ;)
what? 200? Why?
Probably owns a hotel
yeah he wrote that he owns apartments.
Thank you so much for this info. Was gonna go buy a new fan, but now I don't need to.
glad I could help
Thank you sir! You saved me time and money!
