- www.electrical-online.com. Step-by-step instruction on how to wiring a ceiling fan with a remote control. Adding a ceiling fan to a room is a simple DIY wiring project, but the addition of a remote control to a ceiling fan adds a greater level of difficulty to the wiring. The Internet Electrician walks you through the additional steps of wiring and installing a ceiling fan with a remote. Here's a link to my new video on this same subject, but more details and far better video and sound quality. • How to Install a Ceili...

Only person to mention what to do with the "red wire" regarding installation. Thank you.
Thanks for watching. Glad it helped you out!
9 year old video still helpful thank you terry!
@Terry Peterman HI Terry, I watched, liked and subscribed. Any chance you might consider responding to my comment/question? I'd sure appreciate it.
How do you determine which one?
Agree 💯
Looks great, and with a brighter bulb installed that’s all the light you need. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxWF88GpljEn-0o34vtLFazEQ5h5Q33SjU As far as ease of installation- this was my first ceiling fan and it took about 3 hours because I had no idea what I was doing and also it’s helpful to have a second set of hands and a magnetic drill bit. Works great.
Saved our day, the first RUclips we opened, and it helped my husband immediately with that red wire!!
Happy to help! And thanks for commenting. It makes my day!
Terry needs to be the spokesman for Harbor Breeze! Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware should have a Terry Presentation Video on flat screens in their Electrical Department! Thanks Terry! 👍🏻
Tremendously helpful!!! Had some trouble figuring out which wires would power the remote and what to do with the leftovers. Total success after watching this video!!!
That's not much different than any of the other ceiling fans and covered
Thank you Terry,
Following your instructions, I was successful in resetting my remote with transmitter. The hardest part was getting the wiring concealed underneath the escutcheon
*Easy install, so far Works great **Fastly.Cool** !*
Good question! Not really sure? That was a while ago and thankfully I didn't have to find out.
Your advice was fantastic I installed my remote control for the fan light combo in less than 30 minutes because of your very well done video THANK YOU
This was one of the best install video's I've come across utilizing the remote. Although you left out the locale of the box, the answer, was stated below. Thank you for making my fan install much easier.
1:40 Thanks. After going through several ceiling fan installation videos, you're the first to mention where the remote receiver goes.
Thanks! That's what I needed!! The remote was not working because I was hooking up both black wires (Instead of the black and a red) respectively to the light and fan wires. Once I hooked up the black on receiver to the black from ceiling and left the other black (red) wire by itself covered with a wire nut, my remote worked!!! I almost cried with my sister ( who was helping me) yay! It works now!!!
Glad to have helped! A happy cry with your sister is OK!
Thanks for this video and for your web page. I was confused about a dual switch (both red and black wire), and this cleared it all up for me. Saved me lots of time.
Amen to the only person that told me what to do with all the wires coming out of the ceiling. Thank you !
Thank God for you....I was going crazy over here trying to set up my new fan
Thanks for watching!
Thank you!!! Your videos helped us install our Harbor Breeze 52 in Indoor Fan w/ Remote
thank you so much for this video. you have no idea how much this helped me. i really appreciate the streamlined presentation of how to install that receiver. took me one try after watching the video! thanks a lot.
WOW!!! What a super nice man! After watching 2 of his videos, I followed up with a couple of additional questions by emailing his website, which he promptly responded to with clear and thorough answers. Thank you so VERY much Terry!!
You are welcome, and thanks for the kind endorsement! I'm attempting to do a RUclips Livestream this afternoon at 4:00 pm PST. I'm going to answer questions during this time (if I can master the technology)! It might be a rough trial for the first time, but we'll see! Join me!
thnx Terry 9 years later your video is still helping people, i just install one today, didnt know how to conceal the box
Thank you Terry, you saved me a bunch of trouble. The instructions that came with my universal remote were terrible. So you saved me alots of time !!! Thanks - RJennings
Thank you fan man! You really helped us with this video :)
Thank you for explaining the red and black on a duel switch.
I've been trying to figure out how to get both of my wall switches to work!!
Thanks for breaking the news to me that only one wall switch can be used and must be left on....that sucks!
Made this girl look like a hero in front of her Dad!!! Thank you so much for the clear instructions, worked perfectly!
Happy to help out!
😂😂
I couldn't figure out how to get the receiver placed and secured. Thanks for showing me how to do that!
Thank you Mr terry this video was a game changer for me, even though it was an older video it helped me out now in 2023👏
The only decent install video i found.
Thanks so much for the kind comment!
Mystery solved. No more ghosts in my home!!! Thank you fan man.
Literally thank you for explain where to put the wires, we spent so long trying to figure out why the little box wouldn’t fit
Oh my goodness, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! Changing the code on the remote following your instructions here made our remote work again! YAY!! 🥳🎉 Thank you!!
Happy to help out!
Thanks for the vid. Helped with the install last weekend...
Excellent help … thank you ! Manufactures instructions never cover all wiring options and your video really helped me out. Thx again.
Thanks for making this video. Very thorough and well done. Just so happened I was looking for a video for a double wall switch 👍
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Same here, thank you so much Terry 🙏
That saved me a lot of time. Thanks for the vid
Thanks. Helped me replace light kit and transmitter.
thank you so much for the video. it helped me out a lot in the installation process.
Good stuff thanks for the video i was having a hard time stuffing in remoter centre. Now i know it will fit :)
Thank you, Terry! Worked like a charm.
It worked great for me!!!!
Thank you for being a great teacher 🙏
Thanks for the nice comments!
Good info never gets old!! Used your video to help hang a ceiling fan. It's been 30 years so we were kinda rusty !
Thanks for the nice comment! That video was shot 10 years ago, and I'd been in the trade for 30 years then! Thanks for putting numbers to the years, and making me feel kinda old! Gunna be 60 in a couple of months!
@@theinternetelectrician Well happy birthday! I've also saved your video and subscribed for more help down the road !
Thanks for the help I needed it with that red red wire
Thank you Terry
you have no idea how much this tips helped me
Thanks for putting "Faith" in my video :-) I hope that you 'like', subscribed, and clicked the bell?
love your tutorial. Thank you.
great video helped me out thanks brother!
Thank you sir you did a excellent job explain the the different between the wires 👍👍👍
thank you very much for your informative video!
Thank you ! Great video. Just installed the same until , different blade system ..Remote control gotta do some adjustments W / wires !
Thanks Terry for such a wonderful video. I am curious about your opinion on Pre Wireless Control Enabled Ceiling Fans and The one you have shown in the video; which one is better?
Thank you for the video. Much appreciated.
Thank you so much the instructions were very clear and I connect my remote
Bought two identical ceiling fans with remote light and power. Wasn't sure about the frequency switch change for the remotes and how that worked. Your video made that process very easy. Thank you.
You saved my day ! Thank you
TY this helped me figure out the wiring on my new fan!
I LOVE Hampton Bay ceiling fans!
Thank you, this was very helpful
Hi there, thank you for your videos. I am hoping there is a way I can install a ceiling fan in my ceiling that has no drywall. My ceiling is only painted beams with a flattop roof so I have no crawlspace. I’m hoping there is a way to run the wiring on the outside of my wall somehow? I would greatly appreciate your advice, thank you advance.
Terry , great video and instruction. This helped me out perfectly!
Thank you for the informative video.
Thank you for that sharing sir, salamat sayong ibinahagi sir, from Philippines.
Thnx for your time and video
very helpful thanks terry.
Where did you get the mounting bracket? I bought a new Hyperikon ceiling fan and that part doesn’t come with. Great video by the way! Thanks
Very helpful. Can you clarify how many ground wires you would have in a situation like this, and where they are coming from? Obviously, you have the main ground coming from the ceiling, and then a ground wire screwed to the mounting bracket. I think there's a third ground, yes? I installed a remote-controlled ceiling fan last week and followed this exact procedure, but my LED lights are humming. I am not using a dimmer switch. Don't know what I did wrong, but I'm pretty sure the lights should not be humming. They hum whether the fan is on or off. It's not the fan motor that is humming, but the lights. Thanks!
finally a working fan, Thanks A plus. I really appreciate your help.
on the receiver I had red and white so I went white to white red to black .

Great video, so easy to follow, but... SHOW ME THE SWITCHES and how it worked before. Thanks Terry!
Very well explained, thanks!
Thanks for watching Alvaro!
Great video but please answer this. My remote controller has 1 green and 1 red wire coming off 1 side. Is the green a ground? and the red a hot that should go to black out of ceiling?
LQQK at the "bridge" style mount that the hanging shaft attaches too, it's a little arch that the receiver is tucked into, i understand how to do it now.
Hey Buddy, if you wanted to use the red wire coming out of the box as well (separate switch to turn fan light off and on) would you connect both BLUE WIRES to the red one?
Thank you great help....
YOu helped me!!!!!! Thank you
Great video. I've been trying to figure out where that stupid receiver is supposed to be mounted and your video clearly showed this. I have a Hampton Bay Windward IV and there is no place in the actual instructions where it actually tells you where the receiver mounts. Thanks much!
love this video..I'm replacing a fan in an old house, the only wires from the original fan was a red and a blue wire. Is the blue wire the same as the blk wire?
Thank you. Fixed!!
Hey Terry,
Got a question or two about ceiling fans with remotes. Quite awhile back I bought four ceiling fans and didn't realize they came with remotes. Didn't want the fans with remotes but I am stuck with them. Is there any way I can convert these fans to operate with manual pull-chain switches for the lights and fan speeds? They are Hunter fans, Lantern Bay Ceiling Fans series. We planned on using the fans for outdoor use. Can I hook them up in parallel and on a 20 amp circuit? Thanks for your excellent videos and the pointers you give us DIYers.
Robert
So, you didn’t really ‘tuck all the wires up into the ceiling receptacle’. I’ve been trying to get all the wires into the receptacle in the ceiling; I even took the bracket down (very difficult with the canopy in the way) and tried to re-sit the wires and then the remote - but it’s IMPOSSIBLE. So I guess I really don’t have to get all the wires into the receptacle, just into the canopy. That’s good to know.
Hello.
Is it possible to make the light option of the fan, to be turned on from a wall switch AS WELL as from the remote control?
Without all the details, no.
Most fanmakers will make a wall control that you can buy separate which will basically be a handheld just put on a wall hence wall control.
Thanks you so much
Helps me to install my control
Blessing
Awesome and great video 🇺🇸🇬🇹
Glad it helped
I have a beige wire coming from the ceiling, not a white wire. Is this the same as a white wire? The black wire was capped off from the ceiling light. There is no blue wire from the ceiling. And the Hunter ceiling fan has a black wire with a white stripes running down the black wire vs a white and black wire? Very different from anywhere else in the home which is the standard colored wires. (Black, White, Blue, Green & Copper/ground). Wall Switch is a duel, one for light one for the fan. I do know which is hot, light, etc. Just never seen this configuration, and can not find anywhere online.
thank you sir ..your the best
Thanks for the video, i had a similar issue and didn't know what to do with the red wire....now i know. Once you install a fan like that how do you take out the second switch that's not being used? or can you convert it to use for something else?
I like to remove the switch and install a blank filler plate. You don't have to do anything with it, but a switch that does nothing can cause aggravation down the road, especially if you sell the house. Someone might spend countless hours trying to figure out what it's for! Converting it for something else would depend on a bunch of things, like how the circuit is wired and what you would want the switch to control. You could install a receptacle in that spot if you had some useful purpose in mind. Wall-mounted TV or picture viewer, charging station for phones / tablets / other devices providing there was a shelf nearby to set them on?
I had an old fan with 2 wall controls, one for the motor and one for the light. I bought a new fan and installed it the same way you did in this video. As the light switch in the wall has become useless, I want to know if there is a way to keep both switches working as before but without losing the ability to control it with the remote.
Good question, but no, the remote needs constant power source and I believe back-feeding the remote circuitry by over-riding the remote with the wall switch wouldn't be a good idea although I've never tried it,...? Maybe I'll test that out next time I'm installing one of these as I've had this question a couple of times now.

Terry Peterman is there a physical capacitor in the remote controlled fan like the one you install here. My fan has been working intermittently but the light is ok. I thought changing the capacitor would solve the problem but I can't find it. Thanks.

I tried to install my fan with remote control, sat in the chair pushed all the buttons on remote, could not install the fan with the remote!
I have a room which does not have any light in the ceiling. The switch on the wall is meant to control one outlet from which i can connect a floor lamp. I wanted to install fan with lights in that room. I found a wire in the attic above which can give me 120v. Would it be possible to control fan/light only with remote or do i still need main switch as you describe in this video?
What tends to go out first? The switch or the antenna? If your switch goes bad, do you need a new antenna as well? Can I just replace the switch and not the antenna?
I have a fan very similar to this with the remote. first it was working great then stopped. i took down re installed it back now cant get the light to work. can someone help me please...C. matura
Nice instructional video. Question is okay to have constant power to the ceiling fan which is only controlled with the remote?
Yes, that's OK. Sometimes electronics need a power down to reset the brains, but that's not common or often at all, but if it does become necessary then you can accomplish that with the circuit breaker.
my question is, would i still be able to turn this kind of setup with a receiver into a 2 switch setup...as in fan on a switch and light on a switch.
Thanks for this video. It looks like we have similar sub counts lol.
Shooting for the 100K milestone!
@@theinternetelectrician Same here but you have me beat lol
Hi there,
I am upgrading my ceiling fan to a newer one with a remote control one. Question my old fan has 4 wires . The wires on the ceiling has 4 wires black, red , white and green. My newer fan wires has 3 wires black, white and green. I know that the black with black, white with white and Greens together. The red gets cap by capping the red will effect any other lights or switches? Please advise thank you sincerely Freddy.
Excellent video
What if you don't have the 3rd option meaning no blue or red wire, will my fan and my light still be functional separately
I just moved into new home my ceiling fan has a remote control module(think is bad)can i bypass remote application, remove it. I have a on/off switch and two knob controls on wall ,im assuming one is fan speed and one is for light dimmer.
What If I want to use second switch. Do I hook up the red wire to the two blue wires? One on receiver and other from fan? So I would tie in all three together? Please help. Thanks
Thanks so much it works but boy it was heavy to hang on ceiling
My original fan was had the light on a 3-way switch. Can I still use a 3-way with the remote control fan?
Thanks for sharing! Great video.
I have this same exact set of cables coming from the ceiling, but I want to use the wall switch too!
Where should I connect the RED cable to if I want the wall switch to also control the fan/lights, in addition to the remote?
The fan color cables are 3 (white, black and green/ground)
I have the same issue.
What did you do?
And no response back. Sigh. I'm going to take a chance and hook the red wire up to the black and blue wires.
“Get Real”: How’d that work for you?
I want to install fan with remote but be able to control fan and light separately with wall switch as well. Not sure exactly how to do that or if it is possible.
Would it work if you connected the red to the blues from fan and controller?
Thank you sir ❤️
Thx for sharing the video. I have a question though. My sister's wall control unit lights up for a second, but no response form the ceiling fan. Control unit came with the fan. I checked the ckt breaker, and power is present from the line wire going to the control unit. Could it be just a bad control unit? thx
Power present - check. Battery in remote replace - ? Double-check connections - ?
Other questions. Is this a new installation and never worked, or was working and then quit? If it's new and is properly wired, battery is good, then get in touch with the manufacturer and the product support division. Let me know what you find out.
I have a fan that was supposed to include a remote black box but didn't. I have all the wires mentioned in this video including pink and gray. I'm trying to find a replacement black box but none seem to have that wiring configuration. Any suggestions?
Having a hard time finding the code on the receiver to make sure it’s set properly, any advice on where exactly on the receiver the code is located to set it properly? Are the dip switches identical with the ones on the controller??
*Update* receive didn’t have a dip switch on my model, it’s older. Called customer service and found the sequence to pair remote. Power fan off, take battery out remote, power fan on, power remote on, point remote at receiver and press and release 3, then 2, then 1, worked like a charm.
Not sure where it would be? It shouldn't be hidden anywhere that you need to remove screws to get at it? The dip switches should be identical on each, just look for indication as to what is up or on with each as sometimes it's hard to tell. I would just throw the question out on a search engine worded exactly how you would ask. "Where are the dip switches located on the receiver for a xxxxxx fan, model number xxxxxx"?
Do you need a wall switch in order for the fan to work?
