Zone 3 may not have been my favorite zone in OFF, but it was undeniably the zone where the game crossed the metaphorical point of no return. It's the zone where the Batter's true nature is brought into question, where the game's quirky facade is stripped away to reveal nothing but abject horror, and where everything starts to fall apart... for the player, for the Batter, and for the world. Zone 1 introduced the world of OFF and, through the exposition of the four elements, established just how surreal and detached from reality this setting was. The guardian of Zone 1 was presented in such a way that he seemed exaggeratedly, almost cartoonishly evil, keeping the morality of the game simple and ensuring that the player emerged from the zone with no second thoughts or doubts regarding their mission. Zone 2 focused on the atmosphere and tone of the game, aiming to fully immerse the player in this world that they'd set up in Zone 1. The guardian of Zone 2 was a more complex character, both in terms of personality and circumstance; most players will realize that Japhet only wanted what was best for his subjects, making him a more sympathetic figure, and the fact that he has taken over the body of the Judge's brother also makes the act of killing him weigh a bit heavier on the player's conscience. At this point, the player may feel a bit wary about their mission, but will still press on, trusting that the Batter's intentions are just. Then, they enter Zone 3. An area devoid of the game's typical sense of humor, where the music is no longer just quiet and atmospheric but downright _depressing,_ where the previously timid and somewhat adorable Elsens have become volatile addicts devouring the ashes of their own kind, where the resident guardian has absolutely no justification for his reprehensible actions. And not only that, but the truth behind the Batter's holy mission is finally brought to light; the first innocent life is taken, and the real meaning of "purification" is made painfully clear. Onto the Room, then. To bring this sickening quest to a close.
+Tylerkbc and ioBrens Compared to the other Zones, Zone 3 doesn't really have an important purpose. Zone 1 produces Smoke and Meat, Zone 2 is pretty much a place for shopping, reading, entertainment and gives residency to the majority of the Elsen. Zone 3 produces sugar, something that is not only not crucial to the world of OFF like smoke and meat are, but it's very harmful. It's essentially an entire Zone dedicated to producing drugs (which btw, is made of burnt Elsen). All of the Elsen that work there seem to be more unstable emotionally and physically than any of the other Zones, because they're addicted, and only JUST given enough for them to function (I use that word loosely) and do their jobs. What happens when they finally snap? They burn out, and are then used to make more sugar, it's all a vicious cycle. The only one who's benefitting off of all of this is Enoch. He was the one that discovered the element, and I think he uses that to his advantage to get power and wealth. The Elsen may claim that Zone 3 is "heaven in which every Elsen may have a job and feel productive" but in the end, it's not benefitting anyone but Enoch. Everything thing is all hunky dory, thanks to the sugar, but once that runs out, they're done for. And they're just tossed into the fire for more sugar so the cycle can continue. Not to mention the music is the most unsettling in this Zone compared to the others, and the fight against the burnt Elsen on the subway is honestly one of the most unsettling parts to me. Sorry for this essay long reply, but that's just how I see it *shrugs*

This may sound crazy, but I believe it may actually be possible to create sugar by burning bodies. This is because sugar molocules are made of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. These also happen to be common elements in compounds that make up the human body. Maybe, with high enough technology, we could find a way to rearrange the elements in the human body to create some sugar molocules. Although it wouldn't act like a drug like it did in OFF, my idea might work with the right technology.

I think its when the elsen at the station mentions how quiet The Batter is that I really started to out everything together. Not only was Zone 3 giving me more pieces but through the zone I was also realizing how everything was fitting to place. The fact that the Batter has full autonomy & I assumed to be alive yet his character in battle started to seem mindless and destructive. I understand be focused on your goals but he took it in a way that seemed too far. He had no compassion, no remorse, no guilt, and no conscience. He was simply a husk, he didn't need to eat or even breathe to live. So after Enoch I went to the past zones & was horrified. I was horrified with the enemies & music because of what they seemed to be as I forced myself through the oversensitivity & listened to the whispers. They were the souls The Batter- no that I killed. The Batter has no remorse but I did & still do some days. These were the figures of the crimes that I, the entity in charge of The Batter, committed. They were the whispers of the sins I've made. After spending hours there trying to find a remnant of anything, after running away from every fight- from my crimes I snapped. I unloaded all of my skills in anger of what I had done. It wasn't until Zone 3 I was able to realize what I had done. I decided to play my way, no one else's, I was done playing by The Batter's rules, I'm in charge and I decided to make it as hard for him as possible. I found the nearest Zac & gave everyone the worst equipment I could. Afterwards I went forward & only used autobattle when I couldnt escape to make sure I had no part in The Batter's sick games anymore.
but if they follow their orders, if they have a reward, are they not autonomous, and able to see nothing else except what they're doing, unable to see any flaws? enoch truly made the perfect system. so good that none of the elsen even had a problem with being thrown into the system themselves, their very corpses used as fuel to continue everything forward, permanently. but where do the elsen come from, i wonder... and what would have happened if they ran out...? but i imagine it wouldn't be too much of a hindrance to dear enoch. After all. the system worked perfectly. enough for him to sit back and enjoy the fruits of his own labors, eating the remnants of his very own workers that were left behind after they did their job well. what a frightening example of how a workplace could feel, and be seen. JustAnOrdinary User I’ve managed to complete the game 4 times, the game gets easier every time you beat it. However the 3rd maze still puzzles me to this day.
My game theory about the Elsen is that the sugar isn't actually a drug adjacent to cocaine or methamphetamine. Instead, due to the Elsens otherwise extremely low carbohydrate diet (They literally only eat meat, which is just protein and fat) they are very sensitive to spikes in their blood sugar, causing there extreme response to it.
@@dollycheesecakes3658 I’m not really sure tbh. For me, it just plays when I join the game, and sometimes it doesn’t play at all. I think there’s a reason behind it that I can’t remember

@@Hitaru0111 I should probably elaborate a bit, especially on Japhet. Japhet has his own mix of issues. While he necessarily would seem like a well-intentioned extremist, he was definitely much more focused on the extremist part. He was essentially using Valerie's dead body as a puppet and/or costume (which in itself is a big no no). The Elsens point out someone was in a bad mood, but they were nowhere to be seen; only a cat. Japhet was underappreciated because he didn't show himself to the Elsens, and yet punished them for something that was in essence, his fault. Japhet may have had good intentions for the Elsens, but he had made way too many terrible decisions for those intentions to justify his actions. (The reason I only elaborate on Japhet's case is that Dedan and Enoch already are obvious in what they do wrong to the Elsens.)

MrMrsirr Oh, okay, I didn't know this. So yes, it is but the shortened version, without those little choir voices towards the end and I like this version better.
Does anyone else get Lavender Town(e) vibes from this song? Maybe it's just a couple of note patterns that seem similar to me, but right around 0:50 is when I start hearing it. Seems stronger starting at 1:21 when the beat comes in. Ends at 1:53 when the "vocal" takes over.
I once had a dream where Zone 3 was a giant forest, and there was a tribe of primitive Elsens in the forest who worshipped a flying whale god. Presumably, the Batter killed the whale god because it was "impure", even though it did nothing wrong. I'm not sure if I cried in my sleep because the Batter killed the whale god, or because the dream was actually really beautiful. Maybe both? Also, killing a pagan god for existing seems very in-character for the Batter, given he seems to be loosely modeled after Christian fundamentalists.

Why is it that whenever someone uses the phrase "X did nothing wrong", it's always to justify some kind world-ending nutjob?
@@JeanMarceaux lol we got a person who loves generalizing on this thread

...yeah, this one is way more unsettling and grim than Not Safe ._.
Front gate, endless hallway, yesterday was better, not safe, tender sugar, and this are all very unsettling. Zone 3 was one of my favorites because of how dark it was. Like the game wasn't sugar coating it was showing you that everything you were doing was destroying the world

Oh, okay, I didn't know this. So yes, it is but the shortened version, without those little choir voices towards the end and I like this version better.

Yeah I do wish they wouldn't cut the beggining and end off when they extend these tracks.
How the fuck did I listen to this so much? No wonder I got diagnosed with depression.

It is time to purify this zone
I once had a dream where Zone 3 was a giant forest, and there was a tribe of primitive Elsens in the forest who worshipped a flying whale god. Presumably, the Batter killed the whale god because it was "impure", even though it did nothing wrong. I'm not sure if I cried in my sleep because the Batter killed the whale god, or because the dream was actually really beautiful. Maybe both?
Also, killing a pagan god for existing seems very in-character for the Batter, given he seems to be loosely modeled after Christian fundamentalists.
Put it at 2x speed for a cool theme

I’m not sure what the difference is between this version and the extended version you posted. I can easily tell the differences in the music, but where does either version play?
nvm I just remembered that this version (AKA: the really oppressive and moody intro) plays when you get to Zone 3 for the first time
