Damn, trying out the reserves with no obligation to stay is valuable information. Never been told that, honestly think nobody in my shop even knows that. I'm 14 months out before separation and not sure what direction to choose. Thanks for the info.
Just a little note on your vid, in the reserves, they have no (or very very little) combat arms MOS. So you will more than likely have to change mos if your transitioning there as a combat arms active duty.
Very true. For some reason the army reserves gave most combat jobs to the guard. But if you're not in the army or looking for combat jobs, you'll be alright in reserves.
Some states (territory in my case) will provide the state benefits for education if you are a veteran just like a person who’s only been in the guard and is not a veteran. Whereas someone who’s only been in the reserve and isn’t a veteran, will not get the same benefits
Interesting. That kinda makes sense. The state has a relationship with their guard, they want to incentivize people to join their guard and not go reserves maybe?
What is break in service? I’m planning to do 3 and palace chase so I can go back home and be with family. Any advice will be appreciated.. I understand that the military changes year to year and I should see if a slot is open for me in 3 years or so.. thank you in advance
Did exactly that, left active in August 2001. Then 9/11 went down so I enlisted in the Air Guard. Lots of good benefits especially depending on what State you're in. Maryland paid 100% tuition for any state public school. Saving my post 9/11 for graduate or law school.
I’m a month out from basic and I’m the typical “I’m in it for 20” guy. What does leaving AD at let’s say, 8 yr mark. Would joining reserve or ANG disqualify me from pension at 20?
Not at all. Changing to guard or reserves at 4, 8, 12... whatever year is a great way to get a retirement. You just wont be eligible for an active duty retirement if you don't do 20 years of active duty though.
My friend is currently joining the army active duty he leaves for basic training in a few months. They’re waiting for him to finish school so I believe he’s in the DEP but don’t know for sure. he’s already gone to meps sworn in and signed the first half of his paperwork. his recruiter told him to take the first job they offer him which I think was arms combat. He doesn’t want the combat job or to be sent to see real combat and his recruiter told him the only way to amend/change his contract would be if he left school early basically now. since he hasn’t shipped to basic yet what are his options? Can he switch his contract from active duty to reserves or other options before he returns to meps and ships out?
I’ve e been out of active duty for about a year now…in a sick way I kinda miss it. Was thinking about joining the gaurd or reserves. I think politics is keeping me away though. I see some guys not going back in for that reason. Idk though. What’s your take on that? Also Would I loose my benefits like post 9/11 if I did re up part time? Why did you completely get out of the military? (If you don’t mind sharing)
I think we'll always miss parts of it. If you left after your first contract, you can give it a try while you're in the IRR with no additional obligation. I wouldn't jump to the guard until you try that first. It won't impact your benefits at all. However, if you got a rating you will have a debt for the days you drill (you can't get double paid). Not a big deal, that's the only thing I know it'll impact though. I'm going to make a video on my story at some point, but it came down to family. I have a wife and kid now and the juice was no longer worth the squeeze.
It's not really a matter of probability. Do you qualify based on your tests scores? Are there any openings? Then go sign up. If you don't qualify - study harder and take the test again. If there aren't any openings - go with air force reserves or the air/army guard. Go wherever you can get the job you want. Probability for those that qualify, are patient and willing to put in the work to get the job they want - 100%.
Yes. You can be deployed despite other obligations. Only thing that can prevent a mandatory deployment are things like legal trouble or medical trouble
I’m infantry in the army but I want to do the reserves because of the no obligation. How do I go about doing that? I don’t want to join the national guard and be under contract for 6 years. I don’t mind changing my mos to be in the reserves
You can start having a conversation with a career planner (though, they might push you active) or better yet a prior service recruiter. Tell them exactly what you want - to continue drilling while in the IRR and not sign an additional contract with commitment beyond your existing commitment to IRR service. This is something you can/should do 6 months out from eas. If you're earlier than that, you can still chat, but I don't think they can do anything for you that early.
I've separated for 6 months after 10 years from active duty. I received an honorable discharge but was at high year tenure for the air force because of a demotion. Is guard or reserve a viable option for me? Could i even possibly go back active if i made the rank back?
If your reenlistment code is good, you should definitely be able to join the guard of reserves. Give a recruiter a call! You could potentially get yourself an AGR slot. It's always easier to maneuver through the system once you're already in.
Im currently at AIT for 68A as RA in a 6yr contract, my school is a year long, and im realizing that i no longer want to be active, is there a way i can switch to Reserves early?
I'm trying to go from active duty to the reserve. Reserve unit is willing to accept me but wants me to let my chain of command know. I cant find any conditional release info for Active Duty to Reserve anybody else that was successful going AD to Reserve? My ETS is 15 months away but I'm trying to get released in October.
How about transitioning from Reserves to Active Duty? I’m in the process of joining Reserves but do plan on going active in the near future, should I just enlist for active duty anyways?
So, I’m almost out of basic training, and currently there’s some strain on family. Do I have to wait until the end of my active duty contract in order to transfer or are you able to transfer things over now? Or after basic?
If you're in the Army or Air Force, you can take steps to prepare for what's called 'palace chasing'. Look it up - basically can apply to drop active duty for a guard/reserve unit. You won't be eligible until you've completed two thirds of your contract though. So start preparing now by being a complete stud. Out perform everyone and build your reputation. The better your reputation, the more likely you are to get what you ask for.
Can I change my MOS when I want to switch over to reserves? I’m a 35F AD and looking to go 35L in the reserves and want to know if I could go to the schooling and then to my reserve unit.
Can't remember the exact details, but yes. It's called Palace Chasing. I think it's only for Army and Air Force. Would be a good video topic. I'll add it to my list.
I'm conflicted between NG and Reserves (Reserves are giving me a higher rank but rank is just vanity if you are part time). If you served 4 years AD that means you need 16 years of Reserve to retire? And you can start collecting at 56 instead of 60?
Ya, rank doesn't mean a ton. I'd go by job and convenience. Not exactly. The way I understand it is it's still 60 years old unless you bring that down with deployments. Traditional AD doesn't count against that clock.
Towards retirement it's all based on points. Some reserve days count twice as much as active days. Retirement eligibility is based on years in service, size of pension is based on points.

Happy to help! Best of luck.
Definitely considering the reserve after leaving 10 years of AD.
Not a bad option to keep the clock going

I WAS THIS VIDEO LIKE 4 TIMES, SO HELP FULL
Thank you! So happy to hear that!
I'm moving from AD Air Force to Air National Guard. Since I will have no break in service, they're giving me a one-year enlistment option.
I have heard of that! That's an awesome opportunity.

THAK YOU FOR THE VIDEOS... CAN YOU WALK THOUGH THE PROCESS, I AM CURRENTLY DOING SFL TAP AND LOOKING TO TRY RESERVE
That's a pretty open ended question for a comment. Happy to connect one on one or answer specific questions.
I was curious on the benefits… I’m a 25B doing 5 years active… do I keep tri care? What benefits do I keep? And what changes?

WHAT IS THE PROBABILITY OF GETTING A MEDICAL JOB IN THE RESERVES ?
FOR ARMY
It's not really a matter of probability. Do you qualify based on your tests scores? Are there any openings? Then go sign up. If you don't qualify - study harder and take the test again. If there aren't any openings - go with air force reserves or the air/army guard. Go wherever you can get the job you want. Yes. You can be deployed despite other obligations. Only thing that can prevent a mandatory deployment are things like legal trouble or medical trouble

Look into palace chasing
After transitioning from AD to reserves can I still utilize the post 9/11 bill while being in the reserves
For sure. You just can't get double BAH
Best bet is to look into palace chasing. That's the only set path I know of. But that's guard, not reserve as I understand it.
Have your CoC ask your CO. Then route a package to him.
How about transitioning from Reserves to Active Duty? I’m in the process of joining Reserves but do plan on going active in the near future, should I just enlist for active duty anyways?
If you intend to go active anyways, why wait? It's not as easy of a switch from reserves to active as they make it sound...
So, I’m almost out of basic training, and currently there’s some strain on family. Do I have to wait until the end of my active duty contract in order to transfer or are you able to transfer things over now? Or after basic?

wym by 2/3 you mean the 3 years and 24 weeks?
Can I change my MOS when I want to switch over to reserves? I’m a 35F AD and looking to go 35L in the reserves and want to know if I could go to the schooling and then to my reserve unit.
It all depends on the job availability at the time of your transfer. It's doable, but you'll likely have to sign for additional time.
@@jasonburds Active or reserve time? I'm fine with doing the time in reserves.
Can I switch from my 4 years full active contract to reserves after 2 years of service?
Can't remember the exact details, but yes. It's called Palace Chasing. I think it's only for Army and Air Force. Would be a good video topic. I'll add it to my list.

Can a “current” Army officer transfer to the Army Reserves? Have 4 years left on contract at this point.
I'd look into Palace Chasing options. That's the most likely route of doing it before your contract is up from what I know of.
Can you say if you have any information to reenlist from Active to reserve before ETS?
You can do that. Just talk to a career planner or prior service recruiter. I signed my IMA contract before my EAS
Do you know if reserve time counts the same as active or half of it?
Towards retirement it's all based on points. Some reserve days count twice as much as active days. Retirement eligibility is based on years in service, size of pension is based on points.
Is there palace chasing in the army ?
There is. Army and Air Force are the only ones I know of.
@@jasonburds are there any articles where I can read about it that you know of ?
@@auxil3863 not that I know of. It's come up a few times in some podcast interviews I've done. But nothing super specific.
