Yay! Thank you!
Best reserve video I’ve found, thank you!
I think you should make a video for those of us who are switching from active to reserves!! And possibly hit points when it comes to getting NJPs while in. I’m going reserves and didn’t know that I had to direct convert to a new rate or had to wait 48 months to choose what rate I wanted or was available. I just found this out from the prior service recruiter this past week about this
Thanks for the feedback. Have you got a chance to watch my other videos?
I see u Pope! Great job!
Hey, I see you to. Thank you. 😄
Thanks a lot!
Ma'am, I am so glad I came across your page! I am in the process of applying to commission into the Navy Nurse Corp. I'm realizing I will be taking quite a pay cut by joining and leaving the civilian world. I'm a single Mom with a sm child and a mortgage. I've been considering the reserves now, so I won't lose out on my civilian pay? I would appreciate any input on this! Again, I appreciate the content your putting out!
Your ultimate goal is most important. Keep that in mind when making the decision.
Great video .!!!
Thank you! Any questions or suggestions for a new video?
I was an MM for 4 years then I left but now I miss it and want to go back in. I'm trying to shoot to see if I can go for seabees
If the rate is open, you should be able to
👋🏼 hello, great video.... if I’m a nurse and want to join the reserve do we get paid separately? From the hospital and the other from the navy?
No, you get paid as an officer in the Navy
Great video ,,,, so if my bootcamp and a school was a total of about 6 months I’m eligible for the VA loan ? According to your video it’s seems I am , I taught bootcamp and a school was considered ? .. thanks for your reply in advance
Yes. That’s according to the VA. All you would need to do is contact the VA to get you letter of eligibility.
The Active duty life is what really interests me but due to some responsibilities at home the reserve competent is what would fit best in life for me. With that in mind how likely (or unlikely) would it be for me In the reserves to get selected to go on deployments abroad? My understanding is that it’s voluntary and in my case I would want to do those things. Could I volunteer for deployments or assignments outside of my regular duties and actually stand a chance of getting on a ship? is this a competitive process? Is it even common is for the average reserve Sailor to be selected for those assignments if so.
That was a little unclear to me in this video, Thank you in advance!
You can request a mobilization or regular orders anywhere between a few days and a few years. Going on a ship depends on many factors. Sometimes it’s who you know and other times it’s what unit you are attached to. Due to COVID I can’t say what is normal, slow, or quick. Many things have changed.
In regards to being active of Reserve, think about how the benefits will best fit you.
I just got out 3 years ago, and in the process of going back in as prior service 😂
Can I save my leave that I earned on active duty orders and cash it in another time I go on another active duty orders
I wonder if I’ll be qualified to use my VA benefits being a reservist or be cLassified as a Veteran? I’ve been active since starting bootcamp March 2021, following A school & currently in C school. All together totaling 9 months being active once I grad mid December from my C school. I’d then return to my nosc as a reservist.
For sure. Just call the VA and ask. Doesn't hurt
If you go from Great Lakes to A-School to C-School, technically yes you're a veteran but you won't be able to use the Post 9/11 until 30 months of Reserve Mobilization time. Then the VA will back dated your IDTT time from RTC GL to C-School and you can then use your GI Bill.
Can I attend a university and be on the reserves? I live in Pensacola, so bases are all but lacking around here. I'm getting my degree in Supply Chain Logistics management in hopes of becoming a SUPPO. Would me joining the reserves disqualify me from getting a sign on bonus as an Officer? Thanks for your time!
I'd venture to say yes, but I'm not completely sure if you being an Enlisted reservists would affect you getting a bonus as an officer.
What is the process of switching from inactive reserves to active reserves or active duty?
All inactive reserve or prior service members must first go to the active reserves in order to go active duty again. If you would like to go from inactive to active reserves you will have to go and talk to a local navy recruiter.
I am active duty and I am really considering going reserve and and to convert to HM. I also want to go to school while I am out to apply a DCO program. How long can I hold off going to A-school?
I'm say this. If you desired rate is not available to you, you won't be able to get in until the opportunity comes while you are in the Reserves. I hope that makes sense.
A-school is not usually immediately if you are joking the Reserves as a different rate. It has to be scheduled with the CCC at the NOSC.
I’m almost done with my active duty time. I was thinking of going reserves but I don’t want to ever see a ship again. Can I avoid that being in the reserves? Or should I just go to another branch?
For the most part, unless things change, you will not go on a ship as a reservist. Many reserve sailors would live to go on a ship but it's pretty hard to do so.
In regards to travel, how often are you able to travel to different countries?
It all depends on what is available for orders. If you mobilize you are almost guaranteed to go to a different country.
I'm trying to understand the Early Retirement process. If I have 15 years Active service and want to finish my last 4 years in the Reserves(SELRES), would retirement pay be reduced by 15 years from age 60. So I'd get it at at age 45?
Great question. Unfortunately I do not know and I highly doubt it. The earliest age I've heard is 55ys old. I'm sure you have a reason to want to finish your last 4 years in SELRES but it would be fiscally beneficial to spend that time on active duty so that you can collect retirement pay asap not matter your age. The Reserves won't even allow you to do any type of active drilling or orders once you hit 16 years. Meaning it won't be beneficial to you but for retirement only.
I am a junior sailor, been at my NOSC for two months now and I am having debates about going FTS or Active Duty. How would I go about trying the get the process going for either?
Just talk to your CCCto he'll go active
Go on mobilization then work with that local command Career Counselor to put in a request to go from RC to AC.
Hii I’m interested in joining Reserves as a BM, can you tell me how that will reflect on me being a civilian?
Could I join the navy reserves with no prior military experience as an officer? If so is this accomplished by the 13 week OCS? And then straight to local weekend drills after as an ensign?
For the most part, yes. Talk to a local Navy Recruiter
Hey nice video
But I have a question I made 9 months in total from bootcamp to mos school now I’m just drilling each month
Bout does that time count for a VA loan ??
90 Days is what the VA says.
www.va.gov/housing-assistance/home-loans/eligibility/#:~:text=At%20least%2090%20days%20of%20active%2Dduty%20service%20including%20at,placed%20on%20the%20retired%20list
Is it true that after a certain time in the reserves you can sign up for TAR? Its something about getting full active duty benefits in the reserves
Yes
Got a question and was wondering if you can help. I retired in the naval reserves. My first 8 years was active duty. When I retired I became consumed in my career for years. So when it comes to the military I'm way out of touch. My question is...with my 8 years of active service can I receive retirement pay before age 60?
Great question. However, I'm not sure.
Hi if I join the reserves but coming in with work experience and a bachelors degree will that give me any leverage on jobs? Will I still have to do boot camp?
You should consider becoming an Officer being that you have your bachelor's degree
Wut, they send u to bootcamp and the A-school after right away. NOSC or NRC don't have anything to do with your A-school.
Not everyone's case is the same. Some have to wait.
Can my son re-enlist in the navy he got ELS from submarine. They refund give him his transfer.
I’ve been thinking about joining the reserves but I’m currently working at a hospital and working towards a nursing degree. I don’t wanna lose my job… I love my job but will the navy reserves be a good choice for me. I’m a 34 year old female… idk if I’ll meet the physical requirements since I’m a small woman with a bubbly personality.
You don't have to quit your job. There is an act called the USERRA ACT. It protects your position at your job for u0 to 5yrs. They can not firebyy for military service.
If you volunteer for active duty deployment instead of getting orders to go. Do those days still count as active duty days? For instance if your trying to get Atleast 180 active duty days in the reserves, would those volunteer days count towards that goal?
Yes
Yes
Hello I was interested in joining the reserves as ABF I was wondering on the drill weekends ,would I be doing a more hands on experience or paperwork and if I I volunteer for deployment would that pay me more and another question instead of the the two weekends a month can I choose to do more then two days a month I know is an old vid I was wondering if anyone could answer my questions would be very helpful thank you
Drill weekend is administrative unless your training and drilling unit is the same. Yes to the other questions.
Do you know if my wife and I get medical insurance while I am in bootcamp for navy reserves?
Thanks 😊🙏
Hi, yes. Your wife will have medical coverage while in boot camp as long as your paperwork is updated with her as your dependent. Please talk to your recruiter to ensure she gets covered under Tricare BEFORE you go to boot camp.
Hey I was an Extreme Fisherman that worked in Alaska for exactly 3 months at a time for about six months. Is it possible for me to still join the Navy and have it where my deployment time coincides with my Work overseas so I can go to training when I come back from my voyages?
The Navy Reserves is very flexible however sometimes the unit is not when it comes to their Annual Training. My unit requires the first AT to be complete with them. Anything else is a go. My point here is that it's possible. You just have to schedule properly. You have an entire year to complete the basic requirements.
Ok thanks.
Do you have any tips for prior service switching branches
You must be conditionally released from your current branch.
For Saturday and Sunday drill weekend what's the start time and what time you get off?
Hey, usually 0700 to 1600 aka 7am to 4pm.
@@NavyTransitionCoach thank you and I love your show!
I was active duty air force for 4 years inam trying to join the navy reserves and stay for 16 years the army reserve and guard is wear and tear in the body when I reach old age I rather do the navy.
Are you going to transition?
Why not air force reserve? I have no prior service and considering between navy and air force reserves.
I’m a pre med student in my third year of college. I only want to be a reserve in HM so I can finish college and go into medical school. Can I do that? I know I have boot camp and A school but after that can I just go home as a reservist?
Not all rates, including HM, will be available when apply to join the Navy Reserves. I'd come up with a different plan.
@@NavyTransitionCoach Question for you, when I am a reserve will I come home to the city I live in OR will they pick that state/city for me as a reserve?
@@eddiesalcido2924 You'll go back to hometown.
After bootcamp what happens if I sign as reserve do I go to a school?
After bootcamp you go back home. Then you will go to your first drill. You will talk to your career counselor and schedule a time for you to go to ASchool
sorry i’m late but I have a question,
as a reservist if I get transferred at work from Illinois to Florida, is it possible to relocate? Do I get in trouble for moving?
Thank you
Nope, not at all. You can just tell your CoC and they will help you to submit the necessary paperwork.
@@NavyTransitionCoach thank you so much 🙏🏻
Is all of this supposed to be in the contract or is it as we go along
As you go you will qualify for everything.
I been out for decades after 6yrs Res. I was told i can still file a medical claim...is this true.
Not totally sure but I don't see why not. Just contact your local Veterans Service Office.
So to Qualify for the va loan we have to be in the military for 6 years? I thought it was 4 years!!
You technically need 36 months of active duty time to qualify. So what many Reservist do is go on a set of long term orders like CANREC or DEFINITE RECALL. If you JUST do the basic Reserve requirements, yes you will need to complete the 6 years for the full benefit. You can read more at VA.gov or call and ask them questions to find the exact facts.
do my active duty years count towards my retirement?
Yes
How many years you have to do in the reserves to retire
?
20 qualifying GOOD years
What will the final paycheck look like for a reserve? Is there anything else because my recruiter was telling me about some housing allowance that you get. I’m in San Francisco and he said in that area you get about 6-7K a month? Is there anything I need to know about that because I’m still kinda confused about that one
As a Reservist you will ONLY get BAH if you are on orders 30 days or more. Even your 2 weeks (Annual Training) will not get you any BAH. If you want to join the Reserves don't do it for the money. Have a real reason to join.
@@NavyTransitionCoachas part time reserve do you get va loan?
@@jennifermartinez4928 Only if you do the time requires to qualify According to the VA stipulations.
I left Navy active duty last year and I'm thinking about going reserves now. Will my 8 years of active duty add into my reserves time or will it start me over?
Hey, yes your active time will be converted into points for retirement in the Reserves.
@@NavyTransitionCoach I'm upset right now because BM is closed 😭 I can't imagine doing another job 🤦🏽♀️
@@lashawns6089 go in as an undesignated Seamen (not fireman) then. You will surely be doing BM work. Then you can try and strike BM. This info may have changed slightly so don't hold me to it. Also, why BM? What do you like so much about it?
@@NavyTransitionCoach I was a BM for 8 years. I love the lifestyle, the history, the family, everything about it.
@@NavyTransitionCoach btw, I don't believe I could go in undesignated if I'm already a E5
Hey just fact checking! My recruiter told me the deployments on the reserves are completely voluntary. Is this true? Really considering joining and this is something I’m curious about! Hmm 🤔
For the most part. Yes. Mobilizations are changing as well. I personally wouldn't worry too much about deploying or Mobilizations.
I’m starting NYS corrections in October 2021. I’m interested in becoming a reservist for the Navy. My question is will my agency legally have to excuse me when I’m ready to go to boot camp as well as any additional training and or duty?
@@trigmassyes they will due to a federal ACT / LAW
do reserves deploy tho because that's the determining factor for me
You can put in for deployment I think
@@williamgoodwin6719 ah. I wouldn't want to that's the thing
@@mcbins1993 I’m considering navy reserves, and I do not want to deploy away from my family for months on end.
@@notroutaboutitfishing9361 I'm thinking about it also. And like you I don't wanna deploy
@@notroutaboutitfishing9361 and also by the time I join the navy reserves I'd be a active duty army EOD vet so I don't wanna deploy anywhere
Can we pass the GI bill to our children? If we already have our education as a registered nurse reservist? If so, is there a timeframe of serve time that needs to pass before we get this option?
Great question! Unfortunately I don't know the full answer.
It’s okay, thank you for your honesty and time 😊
Can you switch job after boot camp (reserve)? Or when can you switch/transfer? No military background.
You can request to switch rates when you get to your final command. However, it will likely be denied because they literally just spent thousands on you with boot camp, A school, and even getting you to the correct command. Once you are in your 12 to 15 month window for the end of your contract, you can request whatever rate you qualify for.
Is it true you can get your college degree in the Navy Reserves while on orders
without using your GI Bill?
Yes, take 3yr orders, use TA.
I'm a retired HM. For about 11 months, I was put on ADT orders to fill a gapped billet at the NOSC. I did accrue leave, but they never let me take it. They would only pay it out to me at the end of my orders. Were they in the wrong for not letting me use leave days?
If I'm not mistaken you have to be on orser for a certain amount of time in order to accrue and use leave. Not totally sure those dates. Personally, I would have pushed to use it.
What's is the best advice you have for a single mom thinking of joining the reserves. An avoid deployment
There is no avoiding deployments. Lol However, things are changing with how sailors deploy. One weekend a month and 2 weeks a year is the bare minimum for childcare. Many sailors spouses at the NOSC watch one another children.
Can’t avoid it sweedie
Apply to be a recruiter in the reserves if you want to “avoid” deployment. But it’s a full time job so take that into consideration. You can also volunteer for active time and you choose those orders and location.
@@wendymcgill7357 the only problem is, the US Navy is seeing this
Hey, will I truly need a civilian job serving in the navy reserves?
Yes. The Reserves is part time Navy. However you can go on orders for years at a time. So it’s kinda like active.
Great 👍🏾 thank you and thanks for the quick response.
Which reserve branch is best for a 40 year old with wife and kids working in healthcare ?
Whichever meets your age. I think Navy might have the highest age limit.
Can I transfer my GI bill to my step daughter ?
Hmm, not sure. If you adopted her then yes....I'd believe
Hey there, joining the reserves. I wanted to know if you knew any reserves enlisted getting VA disability rating?
@Nicholas Nevares, hundreds of Reservist serve with a disability rating. The main factor is the type of disability, because some will disqualify you from serving. Note that a few years ago the military was granted access to VA medical records, which resulted in a lot of Reservist and National Guard members being forced out.
Active duty with a spouse and kids please make video
Gotcha, thanks for the request.
@@NavyTransitionCoach thank you so much my wife is thinking about joining the Navy but we're debating whether it should be active or reserve we do have two small kids what would you recommend are closest naval Base is San Diego
@@edwardkareem6446 If she goes active, you guys could move anywhere in the world. If she goes Reserves, yall will stay local but she would travel atleast 2 weeks a year plus have the possibility to mobilize at any point in time. Why is she considering the Navy?
@@NavyTransitionCoach we're just tired of being limited she wants a better future I was going to join the Marines but then I got a back surgery so plans have changed she wants to become a teacher for school age
@@edwardkareem6446 I see. Sounds like Active Dutt is the better option. What do you do for work? I ask because your family will need 2 incomes to live comfortable. Does she have a degree?
Sooo is it 90 days AND 6 years? Or 90 days OR 6 years
Something that wasn’t very clear for me lol. But I already went to MEPS, I’m just waiting for my waiver to come back
How Hard is it to Switch from Reserve to Fts?
It all depends on what's available at the time you are requesting and what you are willing to take.
@@NavyTransitionCoach what’s usually the time frame It usually takes to switch over ?
@@luisvillasenor490 I'm not really sure. I can't say 12 months or 6 months or 4 weeks. It all depends.
Well you have to request a letter to the command to get a VA loan and they don’t give you one usually.
That's completely false and whoever told you that is wrong. Most of the times you need your orders only BUT a letter from the command is easy to obtain. Just simply goto Admin and request it.
I want to do reserve to get va loan benefits but I can’t commit for 6 years
Why not? You actually only need 180 days of actually duty time. You know this out in the first year of service mist of the times.
@@NavyTransitionCoach I did more research and I could do 90 days active duty and then transition to reserve. I was looking as the national guard too
@@jessicauribe2866 Please don't do that. That sounds VERY wrong and unwise. Either join the Reserves or go Active.
@@NavyTransitionCoach is that not aloud ?
@@NavyTransitionCoach what about the air national guard? I spoke to the navy and the Air Force reserves. They told me to get my bsn and have a year experience of work. The guard could take me right away. I don’t know much about the guard
Not with these Covid conditions you guys are not traveling anywhere. If you get sent abroad you will be limited severely.
This is very true. Especially in places like Japan.
