Do you ever use silicone grease on rubber/neoprene gaskets? I use it on my O ring gaskets, etc., when I install NMO mounts for my ham radio antennas. It’ll degrade a little over time due to weather but I have a habit of doing antenna maintenance once a year and check the gaskets for decay, brittleness, etc. The grease seems to help with keeping the gasket pliable and adds additional water proofing.
No I have not seen the need for any kind of grease, NMO, Wilson Roof mount etc. I had my Wilson 5000 roof mount on my Suburban for 20+ years (living next to the ocean and tons of rain) when I took the mount off to clean and inspect I saw no issues, no degrading rubber and no leaks. Back in the day my shop installed Business Band radios and we had to take the systems out of vehicles when they were to be auctioned off and it was very rare to find leaks or corrosion on those NMO style antennas. At times we did see a bit of corrosion on the cheap no name / bulk unity gain antennas and those systems were in the vehicles for many years. NOTE.. we put a dab of Dielectric grease on the center pin of NMO mounts especially when using MaxRad antennas.
Saw this video a year ago iam going to finally Drill hole the my chevy cruse roof . i have a wilson 1000 trunk lip mount and it wouldnt ground right i even ran a ground wire from - on battery and the swrs are high i used copper braided straps too. You Forgot To Put Silicone caulking Under The Rubber ? The Hole Should Be 3/4 Not 1 Inch ?
I may have misspoke on the hole size, I need to re-watch the video. The mount fits properly. I do not use silicone on the roof mount antennas. 1) I installed many antennas in my day and never had one leak, If you take your time all goes well. 2) I don't use silicone on paint, 100% silicone is acidic and can ruin the paint and start rust. There is a non acidic sealant and can be found at auto body supply stores. (One of my sunroof installers showed me the results of 100% silicone back in the day.) Good luck on your install.
I was an Installer for 24 yrs,(High End Car Audio) I drilled holes in other peoples cars for a living. Didn't get paid for this job. Hahaha SRWs are flat on ch 20 and 1:1 on ch1, 1:1 on ch 40. They do rise to 1:2 on 26.915, @ 100w. one of my favorite AM DX freqs
I will do that this next time, I am upgrading the mount and will have to tear everything apart again. Here is a suggestion, if your vehicle has side curtain Air Bags, run the coax behind the bags and all associated tubing.
@@390WagonMaster I'm glad I found this video. Can you say why you upgraded the mount? I have a Toyota and when I put the wilson base secured against the roof, I noticed the roof had flex from being thin. I noticed this with your roof as well when you were tightening the mount. It seems the mount and whip will move back and forth and will crinkle or bend the thin roof. What did you do to fix this possible problem. Thanks for another great video.
As in all my mobiles I carry the cap plug in the glove box. When i need to take the antenna off I grab the plug and screw it on. When I had this on my suburban I would have to take the antenna off when getting on the Washington state ferry, if I left it on they would charge me a overheight fee. On this vehicle I have not taken the antenna off as I hand wash and service my own vehicles.
Not a dumb question... Magnet mounts are not strong enough for some of the antennas I use, and I like having my antenna physically coupled to the vehicle for proper grounding. Cheers my friend.
Ive been using a a10 Stryker mag mount and it seems to be doing a pretty good job I’m just curious if a skipshooter fender mount would be a better option. I know the roof is the best spot to have an antenna so I’m not really sure. I’ve used a 6 foot skip shooter before and I got tons of noise from it. Thanks again !
That mag mount stryker is a bad ass antenna, I worked with one for a while, better than the 5000 IMHO. Same magnet and coax but bigger coil = better Q factor. Better receive The 7ft SS is a outstanding antenna (my fave ) but can be a bugger to mount, I ve never had noise issues on any vehicle Ive put them on. You may have to ground strap your vehicle, hood, fenders, to frame... and on. Roof Mounting the A10 MAY help bring up the TX RX but results will be very small. Worth it?..... eh!
Same here...few months back on my 4runner but with a Sirio 5k.
Bond that frame and body...makes a BIG difference!!!👍🏼
Done, I will show that and charging up grades.... Thanks for watching
@@390WagonMaster Awesome...looking forward to it!!!
I remember doing that not long ago 👍
Made that look easy lol. I’m trying to get the nerve to install a puck mount on the roof on my Chevy truck… Enjoy your content! 73’s
It is easy to do, and when you do get the puck installed the reward is a great signal. Well worth the effort. Now go get that drill....:)
Cheers.
You are an O.G. C.B.er Great to see you here and I'm gonna subscribe just for that keep up the Hobby of C.B.ING THANK YOU
Damn that baby blue old car at 1:50 cool kept me watching for more cool cars lol
55 Chevy 2door hardtop with a post :)
It looked like it was fashioned after the old gasser style drag racers from to 50’s, 60’s, etc.

I could never do that to my Subaru but you sure pulled it off with that Sequoia, looks great, how's that match?

It's a cleaner look than a black cord showing
How about doing one showing inside, routing cable down outside the headliner?

OK, sounds good. Thanks.

do you remove it to go through a carwash or when you take it to the shop for a service?

Sorry for the dumb questing but couldn’t you just use a mag mount? Thank you
