The Calif. Zephyr in kinda wet Ft. Morgan on 16AUG2024

- This morning's California Zephyr #5 arrived in wet Fort Morgan at 0547 MDT (3 min. tardy). The train was powered by P42s #71 and #142. They brought the 8-car consist to a single stop - two car passenger service with 2 new fares joining the sleeper car 4 and other passenger work was being conducted at car 7 where 1 party detrained and 2 new fares joined. A third party was denied a ride as she had no correct paperwork. She was denied a ride on #6 last night here. Check out Marne's video from last night.
With the proper people where they safely needed to be, the high ball was given and on a clear signal, the Zephyr rolled west toward Union Station in Denver as its next stop on the way to the bay.
I included a short part about the thunderstorm to the east of Ft. Morgan. It is a rare event to have that here. The Zephyr rolled from McCook to Ft. Morgan thru two distinct thunderstorms in western Nebraska and the other in far eastern Colorado.
My thanks to the operating crew and several in the sightseer/lounge car for their greetings this morning.

I did see # 6 lastĺ night& the woman. She made a scene screaming , dont know how I missed it.👋👋
You did find it! Great. Yep. She had a real screaming time. LOL. When she accosted me this morning after the train had departed, she wasn't in a screaming mood at least. Just seemed very entitled and somewhat demanding. I had to break off the conversation with her and get back home. A family member saw her a couple of hours ago at the main intersection in town. I'll be interested to see if she returns to the depot tonight.

Good evening, Pam; Thanks for stopping by and the comments. We saw and heard some evil lightning and thunder with the first storm that rolled thru just after midnight. There was one "flash-bang" that sat me up and gained my attention. LOL! I do like a thunderstorm out here. Most happen during the late afternoons and evenings. Not early mornings. I remember those from eastern Nebraska and along eastern seaboard.

Good day Mike. Sun still asleep this morning. # 5 coming in hot today. I guess we are all wondering that lady’s story. Maybe she collected enough spare change for a ticket lol. Nice to see a bit more passenger activity though would expect that on a Friday.

It was nice to see the passenger load this morning after a couple of slack days. That's part of the fun I have. I gave up second guessing what I would find on the platform.
It has warmed a bunch. Even warmer tomorrow. But it is August.

Good afternoon, Jeb; Thank you for tuning in along with the comments. I had to back off the zoom to show that thunderstorm out east of Ft. Morgan. I was going to use the trike today until I stepped outside and into rain from that cloud. The lightning in that cloud was what caught my eye. As for the young lady, she was last seen around lunch time at the largest intersection in town. I have no idea where she went from there. It will be of interest to see if she returns to the depot for tonight's #6.
The weather has turned hot again with more 90s. School must be back in session here in Ft. Morgan. It usually is in the mid to upper 90s for that event.

Good morning Mike. I kind of miss the old stations when you could just show up and buy a ticket. Oh well . Rained about 0130 here, not much though. I've been riding the wife's trike. Might have to get me a two wheel version although not giving up my Enfield. Have a great day out there.
Good morning, David; Thanks for stopping by along with the comments. I thought about the trike this morning, but rain pitter-pattered on my wee little head as I stepped out of the house. I am unaware of any of the rural stations that have a ticket agent anymore. The last one I knew of was at Hastings, Nebraska and retired over 10 years ago.
There were 3 different thunderstorms that rolled thru here from about 0030 on. The first two had a lot of lightning and thunder with a little rain and little to no wind. That last on which shows on the video is still visible from here at 1030. Just the top of it but that's enough.
Please don't give up the Enfield! The electrics are fun, but just don't have the range yet. Mine gets me to the depot and then on to Peppy's on the north side and from there, home about 5 times before I have to recharge. Now that some street work has been completed, I will be back on it in the mornings again.

Good afternoon, Jim; I thank you for tuning in along with the comments. Yep. This station hasn't had a ticket agent in more than 40 years. None of the rural stations on the Zephyr line have agents anymore. The last one I am aware of was at Hastings, Nebraska. I did catch that powered scooter. Rather hard to miss. The same gut either didn't have it all lit up or was riding a different one over the past several days. That couldn't be missed though. I had thought about riding the trike this morning until the rain hit me on my wee little head as I stepped out the door. LOL! Sun is shining and the top of that last thunderhead can still be seen to the east. It is warming fast with an expected high in the mod90s followed by upper 90s over the weekend. That will lead to more 90s next week. School must have started here in Fort Morgan.
I think the Roundup will come back into play out here as well.

Good Friday morning Mike! I saw Ken’s video earlier of the denied boarding. This was a little surprising to see that rider attempt to board westbound this morning! She had a cell phone, and I thought she had the proper documentation to make the ride. As I was stowing the camera and gear, she accosted me for some "spare" change. When I asked about last night's problems, she clammed up. Oh well.
I can still see the top of that thunderhead to the east at 1035 MDT. I think radar shows it in Nebraska/Kansas now. I hope that we are done with them for a few days. Need to get back on the trike. I will say we need no more of the early morning thunderstorms. The afternoon and evening ones are still great in my book.

Can’t help but wonder what that woman’s back story is. There was a similar incident regarding a man trying the identical stunt with #5/#6 a few weeks back…same result, no ticket/no ride.

Good morning Mike from suny 85 mid Tenn. Seems that person just wants to ride no matter the direction. What's with people who just decide to ride a train & just show up no matter what or who? Wonder if she ? Will be around for #6 like last night as well. Glad for your rain, it will drift down here tomorrow i think.
Good afternoon, Ben; I thank you for dropping by along with the comments. I am still unclear of her situation. Don't think it mattered which direction. Just wanted out of here. She did accost me later for "spare" change. It is my understanding she is at the main intersection of the busiest streets in town as of 15 minutes ago (its 1045 MT as I write this). I had more fun with the powered scooter with the red clearance light on its edges. First time I have seen that one here.
I have had enough of the nighttime/ early morning thunderstorms for a while. Like them in the afternoon and early evenings. Spoiled, aren't I?? LOL! I can still see the top of that last one I caught on video. It is well east across Nebraska/Kansas area. They need it too.

Yeah good morning Mike I guess you have some people they think they can just sneak a ride on the train. I bet Amtrak deals with that all the time with places outside of the corridor. I'm sure that they try to work as many ride theft attempts all the time. I've seen some of that happen with the CTA and metra. You'll see some people try to sneak onto the metra train. And I've seen it quite a bit on the CTA where a passenger will say their Ventra card was stolen or some other excuse so they can just steal a ride. Sometimes the bus operator will just let him do it because they're not going to sit there and argue with some passenger over their lack of fair payment or they didn't have enough money or anything like that. But Amtrak is different because those rides cost a lot of money. So I'm always glad to see it when those conductors can thwart ride theft.

Good morning. Is the only way to buy a train ticket in Fort Morgan is to use the Amtrak app? I would think the ‘station’ should have some information signs, etc. to inform people. I recall that the waiting room is only open at restricted times which sometimes catches people, too. I hope you have a great weekend.
Good afternoon, Pul; I thank you for stopping by and the comments. There is signage on both doors stating that no tickets agent is present (Hasn't been an agent for over 40 years here). The signs advise to purchase tickets via AMTRAK.com. Passengers must have a credit or debit card in order to pay for that ticket and that is part of the security system AMTRAK uses.
She had a cell phone but didn't have the correct documentation to board. The conductors are not allowed to collect ticket price in cash and that has been in effect since early 2019. Pre-COVID and all.
As I was stowing my camera and equipment to return to the house, she approached me at the pickup asking for "spare" change. I also asked her about why she was denied boarding on last night's train as well. She clammed up. Her prerogative. I hope that she finds a way out of town.
That wasn't the first time I have seen that here and probably won't be the last time.

There were 3 storms that moved thru this morning. The first two merged near the Nebraska boarder and the last one is what I took the video of. The top of it is still visible here at 1005 MDT. Now we dry out up here. High 90s over the weekend. and mid 90s next week.
We are losing 3- or 4-minutes total od sunshine daily right now with sunset now well before 8 PM. Gonna have to mount flood lights on the camera to see what I'm taking video of pretty soon. LOL!

Good morning Mike on what appears to be a blue sky day? Yes, that third party must have hoped that she would be allowed to board #5 after failing to do so on #6? I did see Marne's video from last night - in that one, she became a little more verbal! I suppose she follows the 'if you at first don't succeed try try again". Not sure what the problem is or based on trying to board both trains what her final destination is but rules are rules. Anyway, trust you got to enjoy your coffee (or two) this morning?

I don't think she would figure that out. I do think she made out of town in a trucker's vehicle and not via the Zephyr.
