i know that this video is a few years old now, but you really just helped me with a UAP-AC-M that I have been fighting to add to the system as a new device. It came from amazon out of date and would NOT adopt, too old of Firmware. it did not have the admin info on it yet since it was pre adoption so I had to use ubnt/ubnt but once I did that, everything as you explained, it adopted immediately. Thank you so much for the excellent video, I am in your debt Sir.
I tried to understand and try to follow the instruction from official ubiquiti site but I still don't get it until I had to watched this and followed. I was able to update both of my new two WiFi APs and it worked great! This helped me a lot. Thank you!
Thank you ... I spent hours trying to figure out why the AP won't upgrade then finally figured it would have to be done manually. Then bam! This video you posted. Thanks for all you do to help the tech community. You're the best and your team!!
My goodness Tom... YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! I bought a used UAP-LR off ebay to provide wifi in my garage. I didn't care what went out there... I just wanted to be cheap. Unfortunately, I got it stuck in an upgrade loop. It had 2.x firmware on it and here I was trying to get it to upgrade to 4.x. Well... Armed with this video (and a little googling) I was able to get it upgraded. I will add... my only difficulty was I had to add a couple extra arguments to get ssh/scp to work. Things got deprecated since this AP's last update. I had to add `-c aes128-cbc -oKexAlgorithms=+diffie-hellman-group1-sha1` to both commands to make things talk.
Hey man, your video saved me some pain. I was having issues with my AC HD and by following your video, I had it back in business with the new firmware. Thank you always, for making awesome contents and being helpful.
Is there a way to get pfsense to show up as the gateway in the Unifi controller? I am not sure if I am overlooking it or if it's in there. Some googling found some few years old threads about the subject, but nothing new. Back then the best I could find was one from a guy making a plugin for pfsnese, but it looks like it never got finished.
Great video but I have been having an issue of being unable to save the manual/static ip settings on access points when they are unavailable to be accessed via GUI from within the controller. I use ssh to connect successfully to the AP and having set the static ip, upon restarting the device it still comes up with a different ip. Any help please Tom
awesome, thanks for the video. I am fairly new to ssh and command line but want to learn it more and this step by step will be a good example to follow and update my Unifi AC LR AP. great videos on your channel
Can I use the same process in updating my nano station? Can't access the web interface to configure it, show this error: "Unsupported protocol The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite"
I am trying to figure out the relationship of the access point's firmware version and the controllers version compatibility. I have a controller version that is presently 5.7.20 and the AP's are 3.9.42.9152 but I need to update the AP's to 4.0.42.10433, without first upgrading the controller (another story). Where within the release notes do they show a compatibility matrix? Are all AP firmware's backwards compatible?
Interesting. I do remember some issues with a couple of FW versions where upgrade would fail using https link, but it worked if changed to http. Not sure if that would have worked here or not. It's always good to have more than one way to get things done.
Good day day Lawrence. i need to upgrade outdoor AP from 3.8.17.6789 to [FIRMWARE] 4.0.15.9872 since the other one says its unsupported . I've been trying to upgrade on the device itself on manage settings and then try point the link and its still not working. Keep well
Hi I am having a problem logging in to the AP at the scp stage. I have used the site SSH username and password but it is not working. Could this be due to the fact this AP has not been adopted into the controller yet?
@Lawrence - can you help me the Vlans on Ubiquiti ap ? ive created Vlan100 (guest Vlan) {tagged} then also i have configured switch. Controler is laying on QNAP NAS. Im creating new SSID with Vlan100 and it doesnt work :( no address assigments from dhcp. Ofcourse ive check with another device that supports 802.11q and Vlan tagging working on the switch :) But Unify nope. Is there sth addition to do ?
LOL, "rarely happens." Every single time I add a new AP I am forced to do it this way. I really wish Unifi would get their shit together and fix this. Awesome video though.
I have been watching your videos for a couple of weeks and you appear to know what you are talking about. I have gleaned a lot of info from you and decided I needed to learn more. I put my Motorola Surfboard cable modem/router away and bought a Netgear cable modem and an EdgeRouter 6P. I am not using a switch as I do not have but a handful of devices and with each port being its own network, I don't have a need for wireless devices to get to the wired network. Here are what I think are the relevant settings to pertain to my question. Not Bridged and no VLANs (I don't think I need them and no difference when I tried adding them) eth0 is my WAN DHCP and is working fine eth1is 192.168.1.0/24 DHCP is working for my wired PC and I get Internet eth4 is 192.168.0.0/24 DHCP is working for my AP-AC Lite and wireless devices get Internet ROUTES (I'm betting the formatting will fail :-) ) Yes 0.0.0.0/0 xxxx.xxx.xxx.x eth0 static Yes Yes 127.0.0.0/8 lo connected Yes Yes 192.168.0.0/24 eth4 connected Yes Yes 192.168.1.0/24 eth1 connected Yes Yes xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/21 eth0 connected Yes From my PC (192.168.1.10) I can ping the access point (192.168.0.10) and I can also get to the access point with the android app. From my PC, I downloaded the Unifi Controller software, but it cannot find the access point. I don't see a way to point it in the right direction. How would I go about building a route that would allow me to configure the access point, but not have the wireless side see the wired side?
Can you do a video on how to update a UVC NVR 2TB to 3.10.x firmware manually? The 3.9.12 is so buggy and it won’t upgrade the firmware via UniFi video UI
Thanks @lawrence. If only Unifi was that simple. I did all this before I found this video but came here anyway to be sure I wasn't missing something. I did exactly as you did but the UAP never upgrades. Hangs post syswrapper.sh and then never comes back up. Controller won't see it and multiple firmware versions tried with same result on two different UAPs. WTF?
Love your videos man. I'm relatively new to the networking side of computers. Could you do a video on OpenVPN on the edgerouter x? Since it's a low cost option for home networks like mine that I'm redoing while cutting cable. It's also my dad's business so I'd like to set him up remotely so he's not using remote desktop to do work because of a mapped network drive. Also have you tried the Moore's Buffalo sauce? Opinion?

To see the SSH login and password under site you will need to check the advance features box and refresh
Old but good. Thank you for the video, who knew I'd find a friend when searching for these instructions :)
@laurence: I'm using terminal on an iMac.
How did you get to:[lawrencet@tomz ]-[~/Downloads]
What is the cmd before you get to it on an iMac terminal?
Hey man, your video saved me some pain. I was having issues with my AC HD and by following your video, I had it back in business with the new firmware. Thank you always, for making awesome contents and being helpful.
Just inherited a site with 17 APs that haven’t been upgraded in 2 years and getting stuck when upgrading via controller, thanks for this :)
As a visual learner, this helped me immensely. Thank you!

I guess I've always just copied the FW link into the custom upgrade part in the config tab. Is there any advantage to doing your long, hard way?
keyboard is faster than the mouse and that way failed for some reason..lol
Interesting. I do remember some issues with a couple of FW versions where upgrade would fail using https link, but it worked if changed to http. Not sure if that would have worked here or not. It's always good to have more than one way to get things done.
Does the install script get rid of the install file once the update is finished, or do you have to do they yourself when you're done?
Yes, it should clean it up.
Hi, tks for your help. In my case i need to change https for http, because i'm using a oldest version(3.7.28) of UAP.
Can I do SFTP connection to AP to transfer file because I have windows machine and I use winSCP program to transfer files to remote devices.

I downloaded the app (I have Android), went to standalone, registered the device and it upgraded the firmware. So much easier.
Tom, for the Green-IT guys. Would it possible for you to publish a Windows 10 version of this video?
@@rodgerb2645 thanks Rodger
Hey Lawrence. this isn't working for me. I can't seem to login whatever password I set, it will not take it.
Same issue here
Thanks! Our switches are alerting that there disconnected and reconnect but the internet/power never goes off. Hopefully the firmware is the fix.
The only time this has happened to me is when network settings on the AP have a problem, wrong dns or gateway so the AP can not dl the new firmware.

Thank you man! Very Helpful!
Is it possible you could re-do this video, for windows 10?
Just load the Linux Subsystem for Windows.
Hi, Kindly inform me which command prompt platform you used for the SCP ... is it busybox? Thanks and Have a great day ahead!

The router/firewall/switch all need matching VLANs, routing and firewall rules to allow access

There needs to be both routing and rules to allow the traffic between the interfaces.
Thanks for the response. I had been trying just routes and that was failing.
Finally got my freenas jail for Unifi to update. Really like the new UI for Unifi.
Awesome work, appreciate the vid
