I'm placing this comment here too possibly save someone a lot of time maybe. If you have an issue with the device "Not Adopting". Turn off your Anti Virus Software or also your Firewall temporarily and check the software notification for device Adopting. Click it and see if you can now adopt and complete that process. I wasted so much time fumbling with what the hell was wrong until a lot of reading lead me to do that and was later able to complete the process and getting the unit working. Hope this helps someone!
You are my hero! I ordered these eero devices that our internet service provider recommended, and they were not working well so I returned them and while futzing with those, I noticed these round disks on the ceiling in the great room and in our gym and had no idea what they were. I thought they had something to do with the smoke detectors/fire sprinklers LOL. I googled the name and found you, thank goodness. Our Audio-visual guy had installed these a few years back before we moved in and I am not versed on these whatsoever but thanks to you and my 12 ft ladder, they are working like a charm. Thank you soooo much! Turns out I never needed the eero devices and had these all along. You rock!!!
Completely new to this, I completed the setup on my own but somehow managed to miss one important step. Your video helped me identify that step quickly and resolve my issue within seconds. Thank you!
Very informative, I'm thinking of upgrading from Deco to this system, and was worried it would be a nightmare. This video has settled my mind thank you.
Thank you so much! This really helped me setup my home network. Since the pandemic we have been working from home and I needed a solid network. I got and Edge-router 10X with a UAP-AC-PRO, I was not sure how to get it up and running but after watching to of your videos, I was up and running in a couple of hours. I was using the PoE on my Edge router but it was not powering the AC-PRO then i noticed it needed 48V and not 24V, beginners mistake!
Sir, starting 1min. of your video is well done already by demonstrating those network devices , pluggings and etc. thank you for sharing this. I will recommend all of my IT buddies.
Thank you, very much. I was looking for a straight to the point how to on Unify software from scratch, for someone like me that never did a deploy from ground zero with this brand. Great help.
TY Sir. I was a little worried- I bought a UB AP, and the quickstart guide sorta showed all UB gear- switch, router, etc. I thought OH NO , my nighthawk wont work. Following your steps though, things are coming to life.. TY TY
This helps. I've been using an EdgeRouter 6P forever, but I just got a Ubiquiti access point and was wondering about how to get them to play nice. Thanks!
Great video tutorials! I set up my EdgeRouter X and AP a few years back, but a recent internet problem caused me to wipe everything and start over. These videos helped get everything back up and running quickly and it's been more stable than ever since!
Thanks a lot for this tutorial. It helped me to get in to the Unifi Program as I didn't notice you could bypass registration with Unify, so thought it was a dead end until your video popped up in my search. Got finished in 5 mins after that :)
Thank you so much. I’ve watched a few videos and some make is sound so complicated. One thing I wasn’t sure of was whether I have to have the controller running 24 / 7, apparently not unless I want the data Thanks again
thinking of switching my old Cisco lightweight AP's and controller to Ubiquiti. Thanks for showing us around the UI so I know how configurable it is with my network
thank you for the tutorial! It is worth mentioning that some ports should be open on the PC where "controller" is installed. for example 8080 is used for device (e.g. access point) and controller communication. I think it is not possible to adopt the device if the port is closed on the PC where "controller" is installed.
Thanks for all your videos. They're great without fuss. I use an edge router x on synchronous 1gig to 2 engenius AP's. They are cheaper and offer better hardware at each price point but the software and support is lacking compared to ubiquiti AP's. Keep it up, man!
My AP wasn't being recognized by the controller (software on my PC). However, after rebooting the PC it came right up, in case anyone else has a similar issue.
Not changing the default username and password , after awhile you cannot configure the access point because it says you do not have the credentials (wrong username and password) the access point works just fine ,just you cannot log in to it anymore. Not only me, you can find similar problem on forums everywhere
you see the aruba IAP acts as a controller or uses the network. The iap gets its address from network dhcp server and then assigns , via nat, a different address for the wi fi networks you create. So they cannot see any computers on the local lan, different ip or subnet.
Great help. Unfortunately I could not get connected with a local log in. I had the same problem as in the video. Disabled Remote Access and "next" button is inop. It's going back. Overkill for what we needed. Its more of an Enterprise solution. Thank you.
as my current router the EdgeRouter X already has a dedicated PoE port am i able to run the Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-AC-PRO directly off that or will i need to use the poe box thing that comes with it?
Great video! Very helpful. If I have a WiFi enabled modem provided by my ISP, should I still get a Unifi gateway and a switch to connect my UniFi AP AC Pro? Of will UniFi Security Gateway router act as the modem?
Thank you! It's more or less up to you. You done NEED a USG and switch for everything to function properly, but if you want to take advantage of some of the more advanced features a USG offers then go right ahead. It will not act as a modem, however, so you either need to maintain the ISP's gateway or replace it with a modem supported by your ISP. You'd have to contact the ISP to see what your options are as far as modems go.
great videos - how do you make sure if you have more then one AP - that your devices connects to the closest AP? say you have a AP in your livingroom and one in your bedroom - ideally when you walk into your room, your laptop or phone should connect to that...
Typically, the client device should select the strongest AP, but this doesn't always happen. There are a couple things you can do in the controller to help this (I plan on making a video which covers these options soon). The main thing to change is the "Data rate control" values under the WLAN configuration. This is a slider that determines the minimum "speed" a client can connect to an AP with. This will ensure that if a certain speed isn't able to be maintained, the client won't connect to that AP which will force it to always connect to the closet point. This assumes your network is properly laid out and can cause some issues with connectivity in older devices.
Can you please do a step by step video on how to setup via an iPhone as a Controller “ Controller Mode”. All videos I’ve found so far explain setup as a stand-alone mode. Thanks
If you are talking about your laptop (or whatever device you are trying to use on wifi) then it may be that your AP is too far away, too much interference, or too many obstructions between you and the AP. The placement could be too far away, but I can't say for sure. If you are talking about the radio configuration being set to "low" then I'm not sure what would be making this change. You should be able to set it to a different setting or "auto".
Question: When you manage the APs locally on a device (home computer), do you need to have that computer running 24/7 as a server for wifi access? Or using that Rasp Pi that you mentioned? Or can the APs run if that computer is asleep/powered off? Around 18:00 mins you mentioned that you don't need it on at all times so I think this is answered. In other words, it sounds like I would have wifi access through the APs without the controller (could or local) running, but to have real time data and statistics, I would need to have that running?
You are correct. The controller only needs to be running 24/7 if you are using the guest captive portal or want real-time/historical usage data. The controller can be powered off and not affect normal operation. You only "need" the controller when making configuration changes.
Hi, You mention that the Secondary port on the Wifi AC Pro carries the PoE across to any other device that might want it, is that definitely correct that it carries the PoE to the second port as well as needing it itself?
What if my Ethernet connection is pre-wired in a new home ceiling mount ? How would I connect my router (hardwired to my modem, PC, etc.) to the PEO injector ? Recommendations appreciated.
It depends on where your ceiling mount is terminating on the other end. You would want to connect the "LAN" port of the injector to your router and the PoE port to the cable leading to the ceiling mount.
Thank-You for the video, it helped out a lot. I have a few questions and it would be greatly appreciated if you could advise me. General Setup at home currently: I have 3 Apple AirPort Extremes AC - 1 main, 2 bridge (1 is in my room, and the other in my grandparent's apartment next door). The main is hooked up to the Rogers (Canadian ISP) modem. I have disabled all wireless functionality of the modem and solely rely upon my routers. I need 3 because My family and my grandparents live in the adjoining apartment and it made little sense to get them a separate internet service, thus I extend the signal from my apartment. I want to get rid of 2 AirPort Extreme's as they are no longer supported and showing their age now, plus I can still sell them. Questions: 1) Would I connect the Access Point to the ethernet port of my main Apple router or my ISPs modem? 2) Assuming it's to the router, in the end, which Access Point would be best for the signal to traverse two side-by-side apartments? I am thinking between the NanoHD or the UAP-AC-LR? 3) There will be concrete between some of the walls so I want something that can extend the signal for my entire apartment and a good portion of grandparents. My apartment is 1150-1200sqft, with my grandparents probably being around 850sqft or so. Thank-You for taking time to read this.
Thank you! 1) It depends on if your Modem is bridged or not. You mentioned you have the Wifi shut off and already use your other routers so it sounds like everything has already been set up this way for awhile. It might not be an issue for you, but the proper way to set it up would be to have a single router (gateway). This way you avoid a "double-NAT" situation. If your modem isn't bridged, I would hang everything directly off of it as much as possible. Like I said, it it will work off the other routers just fine but it isn't the right way to do it and you may encounter problems in the future if you start trying to do other customizations to the network. 2) Your two choices are what I would recommend, but if budget allows I would try to pick up the Nano-HD. From what I understand, the LR has better 2.4Ghz coverage while the Nano-HD has better 5ghz coverage and higher overall throughput (with the right client devices). However, the "long range" designation isn't really going to help with having more signal throughout the apartments. Your devices have to be able to talk back to the AP so you are limited by the client's capabilities, not the AP's. However, I don't think the AP-LR is a bad idea and I'll explain why in #4. Edit: While the Nano-HD is technically better, it is overkill for apartments so I would try to save some money and look at the AP-AC-Lite or LR since they aren't as hard on the wallet. 3) I wouldn't really try to cover both apartments with a single AP unless you have to. Both units should cover about the same amount of client area. I would think about getting two APs (one for your apartment and another for your grandparents). You can do a "wireless uplink" between the two to extend the signal to the other apartment. The longer range capability actually helps in this situation since both APs can uplink over a bit longer distance.
@@ToastyAnswers Thank-You so much for your advice. I am trying to get the cleanest set up possible without sacrificing performance. So would that mean that I should turn my Rogers Modem Wi-Fi back on and simply get rid of all three AirPort Extremes? Also, I ended up purchasing the NanoHD as I typically stick with my network devices for quite a while (It's been a little over 5y since I got my first AirPort Extreme AC). So I like to get the best my budget allows for at that time, at least when it comes to networking. The NanoHd will arrive in a few days via Amazon, so I'll let you know how it went and/or possibly ask for further advice.
No, you don't need to get rid of the Airport Extremes or even turn your modem's Wifi back on. However, you may only want to run the Airport Extremes in bridged mode (as you said two of them are already running). I'm not really familiar with the Airport devices, so I don't really know how they're normally set up or everything they're capable of. My main point is that you want one single "router". Meaning, one device acting as the gateway to the internet and performing NAT. I'm just assuming that your Rogers modem is routing, and your Airport Base station is also routing (I may be wrong, but that's how I understood it). If you look at your modem's interface IPs (for example, Internet = 200.0.0.1, LAN = 192.168.0.1) and compare that to client IPs hanging off the Airport Extreme, you can see if this is the case. If your Airport devices have an IP of 192.168.0.1-254 (matching the modem's LAN IP network) then you're already golden and you don't need to change anything. If your clients on the Airport have anything different from the modem's LAN network (such as 192.168.1.1-254) then you've got two routers. You can either bridge the modem, (if it supports it) bridge the Airport, or just accept that you've got two points of routing and NAT happening. It will still work, but it isn't recommended. I hope I explained that correctly, I tend to over-complicate things, especially when there are multiple ways to "fix" it and I don't know exactly how it's set up. Good choice on the NanoHD! You should enjoy it pretty well! Let me know how it goes and if you have any more questions!
Toasty Answers thanks for the reply. My apartment is finally almost done renovation, so I’ll be trying out the access point this weekend and will let you know the results. Thanks a lot for all of your help so far.
@@ToastyAnswers Hey, I finally tried it out! Apartment renovations took much longer than expected. I turned the Wi-Fi portion of the main AirPort Extreme to off otherwise I was getting 2 different networks. It's been working great. It's very early morning (4:30am currently) so I cannot go to my grandparent's apartment to test the range, but, I believe it will be much better than my AirPort Extreme ever was. I do have a question though, with the AirPort Extreme now not doing much of anything in the ways of being a router, couldn't I get rid of it and simply connect to my Rogers Modem instead - that way, I'll have 1 more item to sell and more wires I can get rid of. Thanks for all of your help so far. I will update this comment thread in the next day or so after I test its range thoroughly.
hey, can you help? im setting up the uap (not ac or ac pro) and when i try to connect to it in the software it isnt found even though its plugged in and has power. its not found in advanced ip scanner either.
Is the device running the controller software on the same network as the AP? Also, is DHCP enabled on the network for the AP to grab when powering on? Typically, you want the AP and the controller on the same network. It should discover with no issues as long as the AP is able to grab an IP address and communicate back to the controller. If they are on different networks, then some additional configuration is required and you will need to make sure a firewall is not between the controller and AP blocking connections.
Thanks for the great tutorials. I am installing a Nanobeam bridge to connect residential network using a Netgear Nighthawk router. Can I install the UAP-AC-Pro on the client side and still keep the Nighthawk router as the gateway?
Good evening Sir, thanks for your time educating us. Pls, kindly help... I have a unified AP Pro that want to use and extend internet service from groundfloor to 4th floor. pls how do i go about it... I have already run cat6 to 4th floor. Thank you.
Since you already have the cable run, you should be able to plug it into whatever switch you have available. As long as the device can get power and is accessible from the existing controller you should be able to adopt it. Your exact network configuration could impact the specific steps, but this is the overall picture.
1:42 Sorry for being dummy, but do I have to connect it to router ? Main point of getting repeater for me is that I can't drill holes in the floor and can't get ethernet cable dowstairs where signal is weaker... Is it necessary or I can plug LAN to my laptop instead ?
Yes, you have to connect it to the network somehow. You don't necessarily have to connect it directly to the router, but it has to have a connection to the network. This is not the case if you are running a wireless uplink, but this configuration would require two Unifi APs in order to form the uplink.
Hello, Followed this sometime ago, must say your guides are next to perfect! I have question now though, im using a clound key, with the edge router and an AP. Recently I have been losing connection in my bedroom for some reason. It used to work great there but now i need to reconnect to the internet constantly. I tried to look at my controller for the issue but it cant find any of the devices. Do you know the reason for this or do you have a solution? Thanks, keep the great work up!
Without digging through logs or doing a physical wireless assessment, I can't really tell you what could be going on. I've seen issues like this in the past, but they seem to revolve around unrelated issues. Make sure the AP is close enough to provide adequate coverage and if the firmware is older, make sure it is up to date. Aside from that, there could be interference coming into play. Take a look at my "optimization" video for a bit more info. I wish I had a better answer, but intermittent or degraded performance is a bit of a beast to troubleshoot as there are so many factors that can come into play.
Thanks for the video, got my AP lr working but have a question. I have my ap connected like you to my router via lan wire but when I look in the controller under device It says on top Wireless and not wired .... Does that mean that my AP is just catching and repeating my wireless signal from my router ? (basically making it a repeater instead of a real acces point?) Shouldn't it show wired instead of wireless as it is connected via LAN wire to my router ? How can I change this ?
Are you talking about the main "devices" page itself? Where it has three options at the top of the page (All, Wireless, and Wired)? I'm guessing "Wireless" is highlighted and it is showing you all the access-points. If this is the case, when you click on an access-point, it should pop open a menu at the right of the screen. At the top of this menu, you should see the name of the access-point with the word "Connected", in green, immediately to the right of it. This is normal and the "Wireless" menu does not mean they are connected wirelessly. This means they are "wireless devices" since that is their main purpose. The Unifi controller is made to be used with switches and routers as well (Security-Gateway). These would show up under the "wired" section since they have nothing to do with wireless functionality. That being said, if you click on a device (which opens the menu at the right side of the page) and see "Connected (Wireless)" in green next to the access-point name, then you have a wireless uplink. This should not be possible unless you have more than one Unifi access-point and have configured the network for wireless uplinks.

You would want to connect the "LAN" port of the injector to your router and the PoE port to the cable leading to the ceiling mount.
the video is superb... i wanted to know how to set up a controlled guest logging account and be able to allow guest to log in
Thank-You for the video, it helped out a lot.
Questions:
1) Would I connect the Access Point to the ethernet port of my main Apple router or my ISPs modem?
Awesome, thank u. U made the setup a walk in the park.
hey, can you help? im setting up the uap (not ac or ac pro) and when i try to connect to it in the software it isnt found even though its plugged in and has power. its not found in advanced ip scanner either.
Yes, you can still use the Nighthawk as the gateway.
It would be great if you can post a video for Migrating an AP to another instance of the unifi controller.
This is on my list as well as a video on migrating the controller to another host.
thank you for your toasty answer
Good work. Thank you.
@@ToastyAnswers Thank you for the explanation, it is indeed what I meant.
