Everyone should be more like Forrest, I appreciate that you recognized that. To add the scene with him at Jenny's grave was one of the first filmed in the movie, that's a testament to Tom Hanks acting ability. He had barely developed the voice.

The Watergate scandal was a major political scandal in which the administration of President Richard Nixon (which resigned because of it) attempted to cover up a break-in at the Watergate hotel in Washington (To spy on political opponents iirc)
Forrest was invited by Nixon to stay at the Watergate Hotel, where he saw people with flashlights in another room of the complex, outside of his window. Assuming that their lights had gone out due to a loss of power, he called the Watergate office to tell them about it, and security guard Frank Wills responds, implying that Forrest set the stage for the scandal to be discovered.

skimming the comments, it looks like a lot of people already touched on some of the historical events in the movie, so i'll share my favorite fact about the making of this movie instead: the accent adult forrest uses is the same accent as the actor young forrest had in real life. tom hanks sat with the little boy and just asked him questions and talked a lot to get to hear how he spoke and to memorize his mannerisms. he preferred that than some generic movie version southern accent.

I say this every time because it hits me every time. My mom looked exactly like Sally Field when we were kids and were convinced she had a secret movie career. I sincerely cried when she died. And that's all I have to say about that...Tom Hanks is absolutely brilliant, even when playing a local idiot. When LT. Dan comes with his magic legs made from the same material as the space shuttle...the next year they were in Apollo 13th together! Jenny isn't the villain as some suggest to Forrest, she was a victim. One of the most hilarious, clever, heartfelt films ever.

This is the quintessential “American” movie, from the lessons, to the imagery, to the history...
Forrest is basically how I imagined the “American Dream” when I was growing up: You don’t have to be perfect, but if your morals are strong and you fully commit yourself to whatever you do, everything will work itself out. It’s a shame reality isn’t like the movies, but it’s still a beautiful thing to see play out.

Loved your reaction to this one, and still had to watch it again, knowing it was a reupload. Not sure if I got to comment this on the other one, but the floating feather I like to interpret as Jenny's presence, since when they were children, she had that prayer that God turn her into a bird, so she could fly far, far far away from here. The floating feather the proof that she was there with Forrest as he lived his experience and then at the end with little Forrest. Jenny passing was the bird flying away, the feather in his favorite book the direction of his love, first floating down to him on the bench when Jenny decided to stay, and their love together, then when it falls from the book, and floats away, when Forrest vocalizes his love for his son. Thoughts?

George Wallace was a strict segregationist Alabama governor. The assassination attempt when he was running for president left him a paraplegic. Over time his views changed and he no longer supported segregation..
In the late 50's and early 60's there was military conscription in the US. When drafted the term of service was 2yrs.
The man being depicted leading the antiwar protest wearing the American flag shirt is Abbie Hoffman who cofounded the Youth International Party and was a defendant in the Chicago Eight (later Chicago Seven) trial.
The Black Panther Party is responsible for starting public school breakfast programs but were undermined by the head of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, but then it got taken up as a government program, over his objection.
That was the Watergate Hotel and the scandal that forced Nixon to resign was because it came out that he knew members of his reelection campaign broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters with the intent of planting listening devices, and many other crooked dealings by his administration were revealed and that he had lied about his knowledge and involvement.
Sally Field who played Forrest's mother is only 10yrs older than Tom Hanks.
In the long shots of running that is Tom Hank's brother.
Forest Gump is entirely fictional and it's just for fun to attribute all these historic things to his influence.
All of Tom Hanks performances are excellent, but one I don't think anyone else could have pulled off so believably is the character in Big (1988). For really early Tom Hanks see Splash (1984), and some of my favorite movies of his are, Dragnet (1987), The Burbs (1989), Joe Versus the Volcano (1990), Philadelphia (1994), Apollo 13 (1995), That Thing You Do (1996), The Green Mile (1999), Road to Perdition (2002), Catch Me If You Can (2002), The Terminal (2004), Saving Mr. Banks (2013), A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood (2019).

I think part of why jenny was so scared to be with him is because he’s vulnerable and she felt like it would be taking advantage of him, the way her dad did as a child. Plus she didn’t feel worthy of pure love like he had for her. I feel so terrible for jenny.

    1. The music royalties alone must have cost a small fortune🤑🤑🤑🤑
    2. Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis.
    3. Typically, boats/ships need a female name.
    4. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. Not a recruit. His ASVAB kills that.
    5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around.
    6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date.
    5. Jenny did indeed give him the best gift ever (it wasn't the shoes)😈
    8. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony..
    9. It's ironic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he loses his.
    10. At the rally Forrest says, "In Vietnam, sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."
    11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking.
    12. Observation: Bubba's not a small dude. Forrest carries him with a bullet in his ass.
    13. Sometimes, I guess there're just aren't enough rocks"🥺
    14. Haley Joel Osmentt/Forrest Jr. steals the show in "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis.🤩
    15. Often when he's finishing a segment about death, he ends it by saying "That's all I have to say about that"
16 Keep in mind if Jenny wasn't wasting her life seeking men like her father and was with Forrest he/we wouldn't have had this
