Ah...so I discovered the GGD a couple of months after this show. I was living in Ottawa and GGDs came to town in February of '91 opening for The Replacements (who were then my most fave band, and still in my top 5) in a show at the ever-wonderful Barrymore's. GGD totally blew me away...and this song just kicked my ass. I had recorded the gigs with this piece-of-shit tape recorder and I was too close to the stacks to give a crap about sound quality anyway. But the one thing that I always remembered was a little flourish that Johnny added towards the end of his solo (2:15) on There You Are that was missing from the album version and other live versions that I've heard from subsequent years but it is so imprinted in my brain and it is so wonderful to hear it again all these years later...thank you so much for this share!
Whenever I think about the Goo Goo Dolls, I remember this tour (Hold Me Up) and A Boy Named Goo. Both of those shows still rank in my top ten shows (out of what is easily a hundred). On the Boy Named Goo tour, they did 4 encores, and the audience demanded a fifth, but the band just didn't have the energy to do it (Town Pump, Vancouver BC). Never seen that before, never seen anything close to it since. Before they went mainstream, Goo Goo Dolls were nothing short of awesome. As a side note, at the Boy Named Goo concert, Robby broke the top string of his bass guitar, only time I've ever seen that happen.
I was only 27 days old when they did this gig! I've been a fan my whole life, born on October 24th, 1990. Hold me Up had been released 8 days before I was born.
The Lee's Palace! I watched a bunch of shows there... I would never guess the Goo Goo Dolls played there... except that these guys are from Buffalo and it is pretty obvious it would be the first place they would play in case they came to Canada lol I watched Texas is The Reason (which is another Buffalo gem) at Lee's as well.
I guess Metal Blade wasn't considered a "major" label. I actually got meet the guys on the Jed tour. Small club, only about 12 of us there. When they came back to OKC 10 years later the first thing Johnny says is "Look at the f%$3ing people here. The last time we were here was in a little bitty club with twelve f&%#in people" (big arena show with No Doubt and Bush).
The shirt Johnny is wearing was given to him on the "Jed" tour, as it happens. And, Metal Blade fucked the band on tour support, is my recollection....
Here Johnny Boy successfully rips Bob Mould's jet engine guitar sound on There You Are (that's a compliment by the way). The good old days,.

Hold Me Up is their best album! Jed a close second =) And then they sold out.
I'm so glad Goo's music didn't match their wardrobe.
