That does make sense, it's like making a grocery list before you go grocery shopping, that way you won't forget what you need, and avoid the impulse buying of things you don't need.

That really does make a lot of sense. A lot of times I make plans in my head the day before about stuff like what I'm going to throw and where I'm going to fish and I end up either forgetting or getting distracted and just throwing the same two or three baits I always throw. I will definitely be using this in my next few trips!

I recently picked up a kayak and using this to-do list strategy will help me don’t forget anything and also help me be more organized on the water. Thanks BLat!!!

One RUclipsr made a video that was based around a fishing journal and USING that journal to make a plan for the fishing day. You could make certain factors a focus. If weather is a main factor for your area, have pages set up for heat, cold, wind and clouds. If tides are a factor... If time of day is a factor... Learning a technique... You get the idea. A journal PLUS a "to do" could potentially make us ALL fishing guides in a couple of short years! We have a local guide that has kept a journal on every trip for the past 30 years. He is worth every penny!

I recorded all the conditions and results of trips for years when I was younger and more competitive, and used it to make a checklist before practice and events. It got me a few high finishes in the opens in 98-99. I was getting myself set up to be a B-Lat… lol but I was in a car accident that took my right eye and left me having multiple surgeries and rehabbing for a couple years 99-2000 I kinda missed my window and got pretty depressed and didn’t fish a lot tournaments for a while after that. I have no doubt that I a winning plan based on good research. The real secret is having all of that and still being flexible and creative in the moment you’re out there though.

Fantastic lesson Brian! I’m highly analytical in everything I do and follow this practice when I prep for local weekend derbies. I have to admit that I will follow the list too closely and forget to let the fish and mother nature help guide me to making adjustments. It’s taken several years but I’m slowly finding that “happy medium” between intentional and “gut feel”. I appreciate your channel and the angles you provide to our passion!

I took some of my sons friends fishing about 3 weeks ago and showed them how to catch a big bass in a public pond and that was some advice I gave them was to get a notebook and make notes of the weather, lunar cycle, water clarity, the baits, the speed of fishingand other things that were working . I explained that if they kept notes, they'd figure out the patterns faster so they'll be able to catch more fish anytime they go.

Agree. I actually use an app to go through the weather conditions, where to fish, what to use and then make a plan. I don’t following everything it says but just having an idea of what might work, what time of day is predicted to be better, etc. helps me to get my mind right heading out to the water. Great input B!👊🏻

I can't say I do this every time I go out, but I plan what I want to do when I get on the water. It makes the trip less stressful, especially when I have little ones in the boat or are taking someone fishing for the first time. I also use those as notes for future trips, trying to establish a pattern... summer, bluebird skies, 174 degrees because I am in TX :), and I found them at this part of the lake. This post reminded me of one of my favorite books, "Hyper Focus - Chris Bailey," where he said, "Attention Without Intention Is Wasted Energy". Awesome post!!!

New to fishing don't have a boat or really any gear, but I had fun. My buddy in the same position we both got a baitcaster to learn (In love with it). We saw a nice size bass cruisin the shore, and a huge gar hunting right in front of us! Lots of blow ups and fish chasing out in the open water. No luck with catching, but still had a blast. I believe this is something kayak anglers do well. We are limited in rods and in tackle. We can’t move around as quickly. We need to be organized on the yak and in our mind before we get on the water. Due to limited tackle we have fewer choices to clutter our mind. But we have to be intentional in how we approach our day. And we still come off of a tournament with a “what if I did…” thought 🤪

I've been doing this for 30+ years but I do so the day before by tying up lures the night/day before to cover all 3 facets of the water column, Top/Mid/Bottom, and then I organize my boxes so that I have successive lures to throw for each of the 3 columns.
So for Bottom I'll have my Texas rig box set up with worms, creature baits in the most popular colors up front and lesser used or successful logos towards the back of the boxes. Jigs will usually be towards the back of the box, but once in a while they are what I decide I'll start with.
For Mid water column I'll have suspending jerk baits, spinnerbaits, swimsuits, and everything I can use in the order I think I should start with and work my way back through thew box.
For Top I'll likely begin with an old school tried and true floating Rapala in a Silver or Gold shad in either #9 or #11, or I might go to a spinnerbait and crank it fast enough to barely interrupt the surface tension, I might go to a buzz bait, or a walking bait. Again, go to lures up front with the ones I feel less strongly about working towards the rear of my boxes.

Personally on the water fishing is THE ONLY time i can think straight... At home i am stressed about work... Bills... And all the above. The moment im on the water its all about lure changes... Technique changes... Its all about me and trying different stuff and making a gameplan for that day. Thats whats helped me excel... Adapting and being ready to make changes if your start plan doesnt work. Nothing worse than making a plan and staying focused and it not working. Gotta be open to change... Fish can change at the drop of a pin. If you cant adapt from your plan then you are screwed.

for me its not about FFS being overpowered its the principle of the sport of fishing. if charters want to use it for their customers cool they get paid to take people out to catch fish. However in tournament fishing i truly believe that its going to ruin the sport, its already been proven by TV veiwership that people dont want to watch FFS anglers and its not entertaining at all to watch a person looking at a live image of the fish and their bait swimming in front of the fish. I am also lucky to be in my early 40's and have been able to watch the sport and its progression over the years so I can see both the old boomers and young guns perspective on it. The old guys simply didnt have this tech and think the younger generation are lazy and FFS among other tech gives them an unfair advantage. This can be true yes and im sure alot of the new faces didnt spend a decade learning lakes like the older anglers, but, the gentleman who just won the invitationals AOY is a workhorse. FFS or not he still put in the countless hours of seat time mapping and learning so its not fair to say he took shortcuts. I think tourney payouts vs entry fees should be the main focus instead of FFS, same payouts for the last 30 years and entry fees have just gone up and up. come together and fight corporate greed not tactics!!
