      What makes it neat is that it's made with mostly hand tools and still works. Obviously, you don't want to use it to lock up your bike, but that's not the purpose. I'm sure if Alec wanted to get really acquainted with his milling machine, he could make a much more secure lock, but we don't need a 20 part series of parts breaking and Alec crying in frustration at how legitimately difficult making a really good lock must be.

    Its super satisfying to make a key that fits a lock. Physically, Wonderful to see you replicate the skills that can build these zero standby energy devices. I have a single lever iron case lock , with a brass bolt 250mm x 50 x 20 , single lever with a stub rather than a H window. Similar to church locks often enclosed in wooden shells. It was very decayed on the ward plate but made new parts and put it on a pirates chest. Love the work, . Do what you enjoy.

I fully understand that this isn't meant to be a hardened lock to resist attacks, and its more of an art piece/technical challenge, but it would be interesting. Great project and once again, you're showing you're not just a talented knife maker but a versatile and talented craftsman.
    Stuff made here also did a great video on making a lock, however it was more of a technical execution of precision engineering in order to try to harden a lock, maybe a collab down the line?

    Very cool. Always great to see a lock made from scratch. Next time you do this it might be easier to insert the levers in one at a time, filing them to fit the bitting on the key when the key is at its highest action on the levers in the lock. Also, might be a good idea to have pets not in the workspace as metal splinters can be very painful and horrid to remove from paws. Also pets wont know when and how to protect thier eyes.

    So if the spring steel is what I think it is then it is 1095. I use this on my locomotive springs and this is what I did. I used a file to scribe and brake each section I wanted to use. Then did anneal to red hot and let it cool off. This made it easy to work with and bend to my desired shape. I then preheated some canola/reapseed oil to 250ºF, heated the shaped spring, and did a quench. After they cooled off I put then on a pizza stone in my oven at 400 for 2 hours. They came out perfect and kept their memory.

    "Flexibility" is actually the right term when referring to a spring's "springiness" from a structural engineering aspect. You could also use "stiffness" which is the inverse of flexibility (k = 1/f, k is measured as the amount of force it takes to deflect a unit in length, i.e. force/deflected length).

    • @Merennulli
      @Merennulli Год назад +1

    Be careful teasing a dog with a laser pointer, it screws with your dogs mental health. you can tease cats with them though, it doesn't seem to affect them in the same way.
    Using laser pointers with dogs can cause them anxiety and potential issues with fixation and adverse reactions to light and shadows. Someone I knew used laser pointers with their puppy and it would freak out and bark and try and catch shadows all day. It was seriously messed up.

    Extremely tangential point but: Beware lasers and dogs. They are not like cats and can get kind of screwed up by never being able to take grasp of what it is they are seeing. Gives them long lasting anxiety and such.

    Seems to me, the "kit" for this could be roughly made (all of the sheet pieces punched and roughed out, the key made but not 'keyed' yet, etc.) and shipped out to customers so they can finish it by bending and filing and finishing it up to look and work noice. That'd be quite a fun project. Reminds me of the kind of stuff people could order out of a Popular Mechanics magazine back in the 1950's.

    Very cool build!
    One criticism though: please don't play with laser pointers with dogs! It can lead to canine mental health issues.

    Be carful with dogs and laser pointers. it can give some dogs a laser pointer syndrome. My dog started to sketch out chase and bark at any shadow or light spot. She is ok now. I just make sure not to use a laser pointer with her.

    Alec, the pace in that video is *wayyyy* too fast, it should be at least an hour long. Have you ever considered doing a second channel with longer edits, kind of a director's cut?

    How about a music box that uses acoustic resonance (think tuning forks) instead of a plucked steel comb to generate music .

    While your lock wont be a very secure 1 it would be good for lock out tag out on your various machines if you are working on one and want to make sure no one just turns it on etc lock out locks are never very secure they are just a visual reminder to not use a machine that is being worked on.

    instead of the sledgehammer over the rubber, can he not just put that die punch thingy on the power hammer, and put the rubber on the bottom? Seems easier than dropping the punch every time and possibly denting the formed part of it.
