Awesome Space Cow Damascus great call for naming it yup yup
Thanks to you Alec I have actually gone and bought myself a full face respirator for my grinding and power sanding. Believe it or not, NOT getting sparks in your eyes is quite pleasant when working 😂
Please, please and a twist Damascus katana
You better be making sokka’s space sword with that
yea would be great to see Alecs way of doing it. They made one at Man At Arms
@@Espeque yes!!!!
Yes!
AWE already made it
Agreed
Now we wait and see if this becomes Sokka's space sword.
Please yes 😂
This is needed

This is exactly what I was going to post! Lol.. please make Sokka’s space sword!!!
This would be incredible!
You guys should make this kind of video into a series called “Will it Damascus?”. That would be neat!
I see what you did there!
Ground up blendtech blenders should be next then
Is this GMM?
Or what about: "Will it Forge"?
Why doesn’t anyone like Tungsten ik this is random but I’ve never seen him try using it
"you haven't tried bending space earth have you?"
"Thanks sokka!"
i dont think there's such a thing as space earth. if its from space its not really earth.
@@MegaAudiofile he said "space earth," not "space Earth." Huge difference.

You should recreate Sokka’s Meteorite sword from Avatar the Last Airbender! What better thing to make with a successful meteorite Damascus steel?
SPACE SWORD!!
They exit already, there are seceral in museums in japan
Either that or make stormbreaker axe from Thor
I second the creation of the Space Sword!
SPACE SWORD!
At 12:48 Alec finishes explaining to the guys how the meteorite came to be on this earth with a stunning visual example. The crowd goes wild
Sokka's Mosiac Meteorite Damascus Space Sword would over the top.
This is what sokka watched while making his sword
Awe me or man art arms made sokka's sword
Absolutely! He must make a Jian sword! Lets all get behind this project! I can't imagine the design Alec and Will would come up with the hilt. Talk about a really fancy blade!
There's a Ukrainian knife maker's channel called 'Shurap' that does a fair bit of canister-welded damascus from all kinds of crazy components like bike chains, cables, washers, etc. The trick he uses is to have a canister fully made from stainless steel, combining the mild canister and foil into one, which he then zips off the sides of with an anglegrinder. He also douses the cans, which he puts a little pressure-release hole in the lid, in a mix of kerosene and flux to really help that powder bond. From what I understand, the slag runs into the space between the billet and the canister when it gets hammered on. Might be worth a look? @Alec Steele
This needs further exploration 👍
Sidebar; does "manual" @ / at'ing, work in RUclips comments? Doesn't seem to make a visible tag, so don't really know if there's any effect. And cannot @ myself anyway for testing.
@@pr0xZen Only if i reply to your reply. If I write @pr0xZen it doesn't do anything. I know it works in video descriptions though.
Shurap seems to be at least a decade ahead of Alec. But here we see all the mistakes too, which we all can learn from.
pr0xZen I was just testing it out, seems it doesn't do anything. I know video creators can @ people in the description of their video or something like that, but I guess the spam would be too much if us plebs got access to that.
Yeah that’s the basis of canister damascus as far as I know no one has just popped off the tube before angle grinders if you did canister Damascus you just used a chisel it confused me when tried to just split it
What you did with squarespace is one of the best ways I've seen any youtuber really engage the audience in the product... Well done 👍🏼
I loved the clapping when Alex dropped the piece, like THAT was the biggest fall that metal took...
i love how quick they were with the clap when he dropped it.. those are good friends right there. lol
"3 Montana men dismissed after making fun of their boss",
but indeed, good friends they are. I, luckily, am sure all of my colleagues and both bosses could do this with each other, as should be the case in every relationship
The look on Alec's face when that happens should get this channel flagged and demonetized. That's the most flagrant "f you" face I've ever seen.
Some restaurants have a kind of induction where anytime a new busser or front end staff would drop a dish on the floor, the shattering sound would immediately cue the whole kitchen staff into a round of applause, cheers and whistles to embarrass the new guy.
"F me"
Alec: "This is powdered 1080 steel" *me staring at a container of labeled 1084* Love you Alec!
yhea, that is the commercial name for nVidia 1080ti powder steel
Lol
@@TheSuperMisterious98 Actually, it's the AISI designation that means plain carbon steel with 0.80% carbon, a hypereutectoid composition steel. The reason it is used in poweder is likely because of the formation of cementite along grain boundaries making it relatively less ductile and thus easier to grind into a powder.
kkuhn well i was making a joke but i' m glad that i learned something. thank you so much gentleman.
@@kkuhn r/woooosh
I’d love to see Damascus Damascus where you combine multiple different kinds of Damascus. Or perhaps even Damascus Damascus Damascus?? That would be very cool
I love how when Alec dropped the bar he immediately looked up in utter embarrassment and then the camera cuts to the clapping workshop audience
i love the sound it made almost like a bell ...
Imagine if it just SHATTERED right there.
I also clapped😂❤🐾
I would say you should make the meteorite sword from avatar the last air Bender but I don't know if there will be enough material on the billet
Just make a scaled down one. It would be just as cool
You can always use it as a jacket for a core steel
I'd say he could manage it if used a different steel for the handle
@@Ashmurtagh100 wasn't the handle of the sword made of brass or bronze?
AWEme did it
You should make a copy of the original, King Tutankhamun's meteorite dagger
Excellent idea pharaon’s dagger! And perhaps a Stargate to go with it?
86redferret hell yeah! Hahaha
Wow I’m Egyptian an I didn’t know about that dagger!! Sounds epic
It might be impossible to get a heat treat and make a functional knife since the meteorite is composed of so many different materials, but a purely cosmetic dagger would be epic!
Or the Iron dagger of Alaca Hüyük!
Anyone else waiting for the final thing?
The layering in the meteorite material is really cool. So neat that you can just see that and turn it into something.
Sokka's sword! It's a Jian - a Chinese style straight sword.
I commented this on his squarspace page. It is a great show and very popular on Netflix, so it will bring in new viewers to the channel.
Ground Survival Study Gracie Garage Will made an impromptu Jian from the hook sword failure. That just means he could make this one so much faster. Lol Or Alec could do this one.
Exactly what I was thinking!
I came to comment this i want to see this more than the end of 2020
Can't do Sakkas sword. It was forged in a single day, by a guy who'd never forged a thing in his life. Then it would have to be dropped from a blimp.
So with the popularity of Avatar: The Last Air Bender coming back to life.
Why not give your hand into smelting a meteorite into a solid ingot, then forging that ingot into Saka's 'Space Sword'
Well, practically speaking it wouldn't work all that well to purely use a meteorite as the sole material for the sword since meteorites are mostly mild steel and wont harden.
Maybe if they just use this damascus since he tried forging meteorite and it was mostly rock
It really irritated me that he didn't smelt the first meteorite. And since is a milder steel you get from meteorite, you could layer it with a harder steel. For a badass Damascus.
@@itsecco2585 Not to mention, cast steel for swords is pretty garbo. Melting steel changes it's structural composition, and makes it too brittle to be used for something like a sword. This is why steel tools and weapons have almost always been forged from processed iron.
@@Anino_Makata I figured most people that watch channels like these knew that by now but, I could be wrong haha. I also didnt want to be that guy that just dumped a huge wall of text out of nowhere so I opted out lol.
Been a sub for a few years with notifications on and RUclips decided after 2 years to notify me you put a video up.. Good thing is, I have a lot of vids to watch but I'm not happy, I haven't seen a notification in 2 years and forgot this channel was in existence... Awesome to see so much intelligence in blacksmithing especially these days when the younger generations don't want to work, but what you do isn't easy at all but it just shows your passionate about your work because blacksmithing isn't for everone, its a sweaty and heavy-duty job, but you make it look like so much fun.. I also agree you have tools to make blacksmithing a little easier than it used to be but its still a very laborious time consuming art, so thank you for your love of blacksmithing its really awesome to watch....!!! Much love from the covid states of America...
Colab suggestion: Alec/Will, Colin Furze, Michaelcthulhu; Warhammer 40k Power Armor. Colin can figure out the exoskeleton needed to move while wearing it, Michael can do the armor plating that would be mounted to the exoskeleton, Alex and Will could do the detailed embellishment/ornamentation.
Meteorite Damascus Sokka’s space sword when?
AWE already has a video making sokka's sword
Andrew zamora

Hmm didn't Superman have a sword in a couple comics?

@@silasweaver8268 yea, but they made theirs entirely out of meteorite, like it should be. I say if Alex does it as well, he needs to do the same.
An egyptian dagger like that one found in TUT's burial chamber. It was determined to be made from a meteorite as well.
Because iron and steel had not been discovered in Egypt
@@kkuhn true
Hey now! That's not a bad idea either! Tut's dagger or a Jian sword would totally make this billet into something exotic!
Yes
I was thinking a small dagger myself also, but this idea.. Yes!
I think a replica of the meteorite dagger found on King Tutankhamen would be a fitting project.
A few hundred years a go, Indonesian people has already used meteorite to decorate and made different kind of beautiful patterns on the blade of their weapon. The weapon is called Keris. Beautiful blades.
Alec: drops steel

There definitely was progress since the last "Can you forge a meteorite" video 😊
He's gotten a lot more experience forge welding unreasonable materials since then.
And his last cannister was made with bird shot only, no powdered metal, and the shot was already scaled
Only Alec Steele OG’s know that video
Love how the channel and business as grown. Just waiting for the announcement of sponsorship from a certain hardware store 😉
Try experimenting with chains! Maybe a large Cuban link necklace made out of this Damascus. It will be interesting after the final etch is done and it would be cool to see large links of layered steel!
at 7:50 without going back and watching the video with Steve S., I remember he oxidized the foil with a torch, not an oven. This could be the source of your troubles getting the billet out of the can.
How about Sokka's sword from Avatar: The Last Airbender in that beautiful Han dynasty style?
That is the first thing I thought of whe I heard meteorite.
Thats a really good idea!
That’s exactly what I just submitted on the website!!!
not sure it would make a good blade though, because there's a high chance some meteorite is gonna end up on the edge. Maybe a sword guard, or if they are gonna make a blade, then weld a clean piece of high carbon steel that will become the edge.
Yessss
Make Sokka's sword from The last Airbender or a lightsabre.
A Karambit would look so darn amazing with that Meteorite Damascus pattern
@Alec Steele - your music choices for these videos are top notch. Great work.

Alec! Please do Sokka's space sword from Avatar the last Airbender. It's a Chinese Jian, but the blade is made of meteorite in the show.
The guy i bought my wedding ring from makes damascus and Mokume Gane out of meteorite. I couldnt possibly afford that option so i had my jeweler inset a small piece of meteorite into a stainless damascus ring. Its a very special meteorite that also contains gemstone grade peridot crystals, so my wifes ring contains the gems and mine contains the iron from the exact same meteorite.
@Clayton Cronk thanks! We thought it was a cool way to connect them

the level of excitement that rushes through me to see another blacksmith in montana is insane, definitely a new fan : )
Liquid white out, can be used to coat the inside of your canister to prevent sticking as well

“Airbender” sounds like an endearing term for a flight attendant. (I'm gay, I'm allowed)
rasmis as long as I’m not overstepping my bounds, that’s honestly pretty funny 😄
Honestly that is a great idea Andy. A nice heafty design that will show off the meteors and have enough cross-section to keep it in one piece.

So, basically a jian sword. Maybe they should make Sokka's boomerang, too?
Fancy LED light with a damascus housing/heatsink could be an interesting project
Tip of the day from me: Zip-tie the tool for the angle grinder to the electric cord at the plug. That way you will know where it is and you will unplug the tool when you are changing the grinder disc.
Please make Sokkas Space Sword from Avatar!!!! ☄️🗡
Check out AWE, they made one already
Alec Steele, the stainless foil is a really smart idea on having the canister strip easy from the billot, but I’ve seen other blacksmiths on RUclips and even on the show forged in fire that use white out and then when they get the canister out the press they dip it in water really quick and the canister peels easily off the billot
I have been liking every comment which suggests Sokka's space sword from the last airbender.
Mainly because it is a perfect idea.
I think everyone who has been home with a lockdown, has rewatched this series. So it's fitting tot do one when things look a bit better
I think a chefs knife, or even a sword/dagger made from the “space cow Damascus” would be amazing
i doubt meteorite would keep an edge well
The cutting edge would have to be made from something else
A chef's knife with the "space cow" pattern could be fantastic I think
A space cow boning knife
How about a space cow damascus butter cheese knife?
@@1014p I mean that's probably a better option, I just always tend to think of meat when I think cow
This is a classic case of leveling your smithing skill to unlock new abilities. Before you didn't have a high enough level to forge meteorite, now you do.
Alec you should make a dagger similar to King Tutankhamun's meteor dagger
I’ll be interested to see how this goes being made into something. Iron meteorite is effectively elemental iron/nickel and not steel plus it’s not as homogeneous as you might expect. They often have small silicate inclusions (usually Iron Sulphides) which can cause issues when trying to work it. Canister was definitely the best way to go (only way actually) and the pattern should be awesome. That pattern in an iron meteorite is actually called the Widmanstätten pattern and is totally unique. It can’t be replicated on Earth as it’s the result of iron cooling in the core of an asteroid over millions of years.
That's fascinating
thanks to you my dude I found an awesome ring making video I've watched last year in which some dude made a ring from a meteorite and was also talking about this pattern
i love these long science comments cos then you can hope people actually know what they're talking about lol
I have actually seen a video where it was worked without a canister but it was days and days of work. Forging it out thinner and thinner till it broke along the inclusions then grinding the edges of the pieces to remove whatever impurity caused it to break. Then doing it again with each piece. Then stacking it up on sacrificial steel and doing it all again. Then finally stacking it in pattern with high carbon steel and hoping it was clean enough.

Use the meteorite to recreate a dagger that was found within King Tut's tomb. It was said to have been made from meteoric iron, so this project would be kind of perfect.
This only makes me appreciate those guys and gals that went on Forged in Fire, and attempted canister Damascus for the first time under a time restriction and the pressure of seeing others progress while they struggle.
By now means a professional but I've seen others use the "canoe" method canister to get a more distinctive pattern.
Impressive work.
That's really nice. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get a pair of utility/survival knives for my son and I. I would engrave our names on them and fit the handles to our hands and make sheaths. It would be amazing
Make an Egyptian dagger that like the one found in King tut's tomb cos they were worth more than Gold because they could only get meteorite for steel and weapons
Alex,
There is a very old theory that says the first really high-end iron age weapons were made out of refined meteorite. There's a bunch of really old legends about swords being handed down from the gods.
I think you need to explore this theory by doing a sword of a really really old pattern. A pre-roman Celtic Leaf blade would be a good example of a bronze age patterns that might have been first made in meteorite iron.
that would be absolutely wonderful!
Its not really a theory, its fact.
Atlia the hun's "sword of mars" and king Tut's dagger are both meteorite metal.
There are also suggestions that othe legendary swords such as Excalibur were as well
the big hammer looks FANTASTIC!!!
I would love to see some canister Damascus made out of different chunks and cut-offs of various types of Damascus patterns!
It would be cool if you make a short sword with the meteorite Damascus as the core and 15N20 wrapped as the cutting edge.. that'd be sweet!
I had a similar idea but instead canister damascus made of titanium and steel core and a meteorite damascus cutting-edge.
That's beautiful!
I'd be intrigued to see if you can hammer those meterorite cut outs into wafers, then stack those up to forge weld a new billet.

Do you think smeltering the meteorite would've helped? Melt it down like raw ore and try to get the iron out as pure as possible?
And would you consider a follow-up talking about how the Tutankhamun dagger might've come to be, a dagger supposedly made out of meteorite iron but with Bronze Age tools and knowledge?

Pandora TheClay lol. My bad. I should have been more specific. I didn’t mean I was wondering about Minecraft and terraria cross play. I know that won’t happen, as they are two completely different games. I was wondering about the crossplay-ability of terraria itself on separate consoles... like if I had terraria on my phone and say you (for this example) had it on pc, would we be able to play together.
