- Brad Dourif discusses meeting David Lynch on the set of Dune, and how Lynch wanted Jürgen Prochnow to have surgery to put a hole in his cheek!
This interview was at Spooky Empire May-Hem in Orlando on 16 May 2015, and uses footage from Brian Townsend's video at
• Video and from Lynch's Dune.
This man doesnt have to play the biggest role in movie, but he's always unforgettable performance
I loved him on Star Trek Voyager
@Sam Bacon precisely.
One could argue he gave the best performance in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," even though Nicholson was great. Just watched recently and it's still so powerful.
His work in Exorcism 3 is the most mindblowing
Thought he was perfect as Grima Wormtongue.
Mr. Dourif is so unbelievably underrated as an actor, its criminal.
This man is one of the most underrated actors, his role as The Gemini Killer in The Exorcist 3 was phenomenal.
He and Bud Cort (probably most famous for "Harold and Maude") are WAY super underrated as actors. Bud has done very few movies but is memorable in all of them, same as Brad. I would have loved to have seen the two of them in the same movie playing off each other. [edit: Actually, I just checked IMDB and Bud has actually done a TON of movies and TV shows but most of them got little fanfare]
It's the smiles that keep us going.
He was in one flew over the cuckoo nest great actor
Brad is one of THE best actors of all time.
Absolutely. Brilliant.
Agree
Totally underrated
He's brilliant. I wonder if he knows this.
I'll watch something just because he's in it.
this man is easily one of the most interesting actors of all time.
"It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion."
@Blasted Heath...you!! ;-x
probably only comes in mimic cherry flavour.
dammit i was gonna say that
I went to see David Lynch's Dune with my sister in the theater when it came out. I had never read the books and she had read all of them. I totally LOVED the movie (still do) and she HATED it. Funny thing is, though, after I read the books I still love the movie AND the books. And when Denis Villeneuve's version comes out I'm sure I will love it as well and continue to love what has come before. It's kind of odd, but I have found every single version of Dune at least "good" and most "great", even the made for TV versions. Can't say that for most adaptations I've seen of other books over the years.
At yes, the Mentat Creed. But we had a slightly different one in college, due to the excessive amount of coffee and caffeine we'd imbibe. "It is by my will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shaking, the shaking becomes a warning. It is with my will alone I set my mind in motion."
He gave a brilliant performance in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
He's the doctor in Deadwood too.
Check out John Huston's Wise Blood. Dourif is fantastic there.
That Deadwood cast was insane, but even then he was a standout
@@Jon.A.Scholt Yes it was. One of my all-time favorite shows. I still cannot get over that they cancelled Deadwood, at least we finally got a movie, some closure is better than none.
NOBODY else could have played Billy Bibbit.
He was a masterful Grima the Wormtongue.
Hashmountain don't forget the Gemini Killer in Exorcist III
Ill News is an Ill Guest...
If you like one dimensional on-the-nose portrayals, he’s your guy. 🙄
I have read all the books and Brad is forever going to be Piter in my head. He played that character better then anyone I could imagine.
". . My plan..."
Baron Harkonnen: "My plan!"
"The plan..."
It was actually the Baron's plan, it was pure evil and aimed at making him Emperor.
"Remember the tooth !" oops
@@cesaru3619 Emperor's plan.
@@cesaru3619 Pretty much only the Atreides of the major houses were shown to be virtuous - both Harkonnen, the Emperor, the Bene Gesserit and the Navigators Guild were all pretty much psychopaths clearing obstacles from their path.
@Jaegar Ultima Cue maniacal Rabban laugh...
Brad Dourif is FANTASTIC in Deadwood. HBO series set on the American frontier in the 1870s. I mean, he's superb in everything really.
Pagan Pilgrim: I agree. His mix of crusty old codger with a magnanimous heart was superb. He was one of my favorite characters in ‘Deadwood’
@@WickedKingLycoan For me it's a toss up between Ian McShane and Powers Booth.
Mark Gillies: That was an excellent HBO series with so many great characters. You really grew to love Ian McShane in that series.
@@WickedKingLycoan First saw Ian on telly was Lovejoy (British tv series).Deadwood was a great show.
my GOD. Doc Cochran... it's the same guy. I never noticed.
Simply an amazing actor. Kills in every part he plays
One of the most underrated actors of all time.
He is great. Everything he does makes the movie memorable. One of the greatest actors. Everytime I see him he nails whatever he does.
The scariest Brad Dourif movie has to be the Excorcist 3,... his part as the Gemini killer is truly scary and I couldn't stop watching him doing it !!! He's AMAZING !!
Brilliant film. I remember being freaked out by it all them years ago.
Yes, Brad is incredible in that film. I love Exorcist III.
Dob't forget he did tge voice over of Chucky.
Absolutely stunning in Exorcist 3
Agreed.
@buymebluepills Agreed.
" Ohhh, some boos from galleries I see."
at last
I'm glad this movie seems to be finally gaining the respect it deserves. Really good film.
His performance as Piter was delightfully nightmarish. In every scene he was a looming, ravenous, sensuous predator. I saw Lynch's Dune at twelve in the theater...Dourif absolutely freaked me out. 🏆
Should have been cast in the exact same role for the 2020 version!
That could have worked but it was a completely different style. Dave Dastmalchian killed it, he's basically a younger Brad anyway. Super talented actor who steals scenes in smaller roles.
great actor. truly terrifying in Mississippi burning, so good.
A lot of horror fans associate him with Chucky, but I found Deputy Clinton Pell to be the most terrifying character he ever played. And sharing scenes with acting heavyweights Hackman and Dafoe, Dourif gave just as good as he got.
@@psytrancedj 100% agree.
Watch him in Exorcist III and see if you still think he was scarier in MB.
Brad Dourif is a bad ass character actor. In addition to Dune, I've enjoyed him in Star Trek Voyager, Amos and Andrew, Alien Ressurection, of course, his role as Chucky in the original Child's Play movies, and as The Gemini Killer in The Exorcist III.
I thought that he did a fantastic job as Grima Wormtounge in the lord of the rings.
@@johndoe-cv8pr I can't believe that one slipped my mind.👍
And the Deputy Sherrif in Mississippi Burning.
Even in the Toto videoclip "Stranger in town"
He is also the ONLY good performance in the oft forgotten Steven King film NightShift.
I'm watching Deadwood for the first time and Brad's doctor is perhaps one of his finest roles. It's so great to see a guy whose given us so many unbalanced creeps play a deeply compassionate, upright, kind and tormented man.
One of the best American screen actors - not always in the best movies ... but always fascinating to watch. Work in Exorcist III is absolutely breathtaking as is his guest role in Star Trek: Voyager.
Brad Dourif is so expressive even when he just talks stuff. It's like he has acting oozing out of his soul 24/7 :D
Oh yes, Brad Dourif from Dune and Lord of the Rings trilogy. Arthur C Clarke said about comparing Dune to Lord of the Rings and Brad was in both.
was he grimas wormtongue?
@@colmcq Yes, also Billy Bibbit in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and the newspaper publisher in Deadwood.
Fuchsia 'tude he played the Doc
@@rustyshackleford4761 Oh right, yes. Jeff Jones was the publisher.
Woulda been a great Joker. Maybe still would.
I wanna see him as Carnage
Brad could do many. Joker, Penguin, Scarecrow, Hugo, Freeze, Ssasz.. He's that good.
Wicked Scott he would be the best Joker easily.
Wicked Scott oh god yes
Yes! Yes!! He could surely pull it off. He does "crazy" AND "creepy" very well.
I love his "It is by will alone I set my mind in motion..." scene
It’s a shame dourif and lynch didn’t do tons of projects together. Dourif has that intensity that would be a great cog in a lynch film or in twin peaks.
Mentat Piter Devries. OMG. I loved this guy in Dune. 'It is by will alone, I set my mind in motion'
His character was excellent and he played it so well.
He did amazing in Lord of the rings as Grima Wormtongue.
I love every performance this man gives. He's astonishing in deadwood and great in everything else.
I love Brad and have for years. He's also good in the episode of X-Files he was in, so creepy and delicious.
'Beyond the Sea', probably one of the best episodes of the entire series and his performance is a large part of why it was.
Dune is a movie I can always watch again. It's just trippy....
I wonder, if Western civilization survives, if in another 80+ years Dune will end up being the most noted David Lynch movie. It really is unforgettable and Lynch's mark is all over it despite his misgivings.
One of those ultra cool actors that does EVERYTHING well. Good guys, bad guys, crazy guys, cool guys......
His performance on Wise Blood was excellent, such an underrated movie... And one of my favorites as well.
Excellent. Just captured Flannery O’Conner better than anyone possible
A truly wonderful character actor. One of the greatest.
Still love the 80s movie far more than the new one. Both are great but the original captured the feeling the books gave, even with the changes.
Braf Dourif and David Lynch. That's beyond all.
Brad is one of my all time favorite actors.
Brad is the best "creep" actor ever. Every time a director says, "I need an actor for this creep role, any suggestions?" The entire room says, "Brad Dourif."
I see your "Brad Dourif" and raise you "Doug Hutchison", who happens to be a creep in real life also. I used to mix up both actors for years.
@@AlanHoey86 ,Haha!! Eugene Tooms? Definitely a creeper.
Check out Brad's performance on the Babylon 5 episode "Passing through Gethsemane". 3rd season, I believe. Awesome.
Dune is one of my all time favorites. This guy played an amazing role.
This guy is a phenomenal actor. He’s killed it in literally every movie he’s been in, for like 40 something years.
LYNCH: How do you feel about actors having surgery done on them for their parts?
ME: Uh... On which parts for what parts?
Probably one of the most underrated actors of all time.
The new Dune has come out and its true to the book. Its done its run in the theatres, made money, critics and fans have been happy but that's it. Nobody is talking about it. Its come and gone and nobody is talking about it. Frank Herbert and Denis Villeneuve Dune is like driving a car down the highway. You stay in your lane, use your indicator, basically do what is right and bring no attention to yourself. Then you have David. He drives a truck straight down the middle of the road with no fucks given. And that's all people talk about. He made Dune his own. He did things Frank Herbert hasn't got the imagination to do. And in 2022, we're still talking about Dune 1984.
I had never heard of David Lynch until Blue Velvet.
Amazing interview, so insightful, in such a short space of time.
This Guy is a Legend. One of my Fav. Actors ever.
He's a brilliant actor. I loved him as Piter and as Dr Gediman in Alien 4 (a pearl amongst the other dross) super sniveling toady in LoTR and Billy Bibbit in OFOtCN
Fantastic actor. Doesn't matter, how good the new Dune movie will be, I will miss Brad Dourif as menthat in it.
seeing as nu dune didnt give nu piter an inch of room to breathe, likely no one will ever hold a candle to brad's piter,. in the 84 movie, they where allowed to be uncomfortable and gross lol nowadays, looking to please the masses, it's not PC to do state anything that we know about the harkonnens, or show anything they might do. i have a new appreciation for dune 84.
Remember him as a young actor in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. He's one of the best character actors of all time.
Brad is a very good character actor
One of the best actors to ever live. From Babylon 5 to Lord of the Rings and Chucky.
the scene with Brad giving the orders to the pair of Harkonnen soldiers on how to handle Paul and Jessika...with the worm...
"the ring. Where is the Duke's ring, Pieter?"
He's in a Toto music video from around the same time as Dune.
Brad, I reread Dune every four or five years. After the movie came out Piter De Vries looked exactly like you every time I reread it.
Still one of my favorite actors.
Dourif is a beast.
I always enjoyed his acting.
He had the best cameo on star trek Voyager and was amazing as the doc in deadwood
Kinda wish he'd stayed on Voyager longer. Characters who have a different mindset, or the characters who have insight into people's mindsets are always fascinating for me to see. Like the psychologists on Law and Order, etc.
No Brad, no Chucky. Incredible and esoteric actor.
His daughter is great too.. and unbelievably stunning.
cant believe he is Chucky and greener wormtongue, dude is just amazing
The Mentat Assassin.
Great actor, loved him in his X-Files episode.
Brad was incredible in Mississippi Burning. Well, he's incredible in pretty much everything he's ever been in.
If you're a fan of Brad Dourif you should check out a movie called Wise Blood (1979) directed by John Huston. Its a weird, intense film, but an amazing performance.
Thank you, never heard of this movie.
My very favourite actor.
for me, he will ALWAYS be the guy from Exorcist 3. The Gemini killer🤩. he's that guy who eats up a scene in any movie hes in😎
Brad is my hero!
Such an underrated actor !!!
I'll watch something just because Brad Dourif is in it.
Jack Dante is his best role for me.
This is one outstanding actor.
I scanned the comments. We all agree. Brad Dourif is a great actor.
The one thing I remember this guy for, because it was the first thing I ever saw him in, was the old video game Myst III: Exile. Such a weird role for him to be in but I guess he was a fan of the series.
One of America's finest character actors of all time
I set my mind in motion...
I like his face, his manner AND I like his voice.
I like him.
Thank you in advance.
The Baron: "HE WHO CONTROLS THE SPICE! CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE!"
If there was ever a Darth Plagueis movie, Brad Dourif would play Palpatine
Brad is a very intelligent smart man and very talented too .loved all of his movies he has done on Chucky
To this day when I read the book I get the mental Image of Brad for Piter.
He was such a badass villain in Dune
Dourif has serious chops. Even a little B-grade film (can't recall the title) he did with Michae Ironside about a severely handicapped guy & and an ex-con (Dourif/Ironside, respectively) was elevated by Dourif's presence.
A unique variety of choices, that's Mr. Dourif's "thing" (see what I did there).
hes amazing playing the character piter de vries .
It is by will alone I set my mind in motion..
This guy would be the Perfect Dr Yueh for Dune 2020
Hey! The guy from Myst 3: Exile!
If you're a Dourif fan, see him in "Scream of Stone".
Never heard?
Even moreso than that, watch Exorcist 3: Legion. Fantastic movie, and Brad is perfectly cast in it.
Also, Wise Blood is incredible.
@@TheRedRedKroovy E-III is a severely underrated film. The real sequel to the original.
Wise Blood on YT right now.
It is by will alone I set my mind in motion, it is by will alone I set my mind in motion
Announcer: Mentat Piter De Vries. Message for Mentat Piter De Vries. The Baron is impatient for Leto's reply.
Piter De Vries: It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.
[drink]
Piter de Vries: My lord.
Baron Harkonnen: Piter!
Piter de Vries: The Atreides will be leaving Caladan soon, Baron, and i have here your answer from Duke Leto.
Baron Harkonnen: What does Leto say, Piter?
Piter De Vries: He wishes to inform you that "Vendetta", as he put it, using the ancient tongue, "the act of Kanly" is still alive in the Universe. He does not wish to meet or speak with you.
Baron Harkonnen: I've made my peace gesture. The forms of Kanly have been obeyed!
Baron Harkonnen: Bring in Feyd and Rabban!
Piter De Vries: As you instructed me, I have enlightened your nephews concerning my plan...
Baron Harkonnen: *My* plan!
Piter De Vries: ...*the* plan... to crush the Atreides.
Piter De Vries: Feyd, Rabban, go quietly. No other great house of the Landsraad must ever know of the Emperor's aid to the Baron. The entire Landsraad would turn against the Baron and the Emperor.
Amazing storytelling.
One of THE actors.
By will alone i set my mind in motion...
Wow, imagine possibly having to have a hole cut in your cheek for a movie. I am glad that Jurgen Prochnow didn't have to have it done.
Douriff, POSTURE!
He was incredible in Star Trek Voyager. I wish they had made the role a longer-lasting one. The show could have only benefitted from it.
A great actor!
Y'all know Brad scored his first Oscar nomination YOUNG in one of John Huston's last movies. If you haven't seen Wise Blood...hoo.
Aiens.... Mississippi burning..... dune......
GREAT ACTOR
