- AmericanCaesar Salad presents: Brad Dourif has a 45-year-long track of excellence in feature films, beginning with his Oscar-nominated debut in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." I take a look at the possible ways in which Dourif builds his characters, using the vast tapestry of performances as evidence.

Most underrated actor alive!
I would tend to agree!
Why is he underrated? He’s in many big films and given plenty of praise
Word.
What do you mean ? Brad plays one of the greatest horror icons in history. He has had over 3 oscar nominations and and iconic laugh. So when you say he is underrated think again pls 😊.
@@isaacsatar9304 probably meant he's not an actor that has a super high profile. He's kinda like Daniel day Lewis
People are pissed Willem Dafoe hasn’t played the Joker, yet seem to forget Brad Dourif
Yeah, seems obvious in retrospect now, right?
He was Tim Burton’s first choice before Nicholson actually
@@MegaWumba Imagine that? He looks like he was drawn like Bolland in "The Killing Joke."
He could still be Rick Sanchez in a Live Action saga directed by James Gunn.
Now you’ve mentioned it I wish it had happened.
The fact that Dourif has never won an Oscar is just bewildering. The man's an American treasure and has been since the early 70's.
He came SO CLOSE but was robbed by George Burns.
I will not remember any of the movies he acted in except Chucky ( probably) but anyway no hate tho
@@amcaesarAgreed and if I had to pick a role aside from Billy Bibbit he should have gotten a nomination for (let alone win), it'd be as the Gemini Killer in "Exorcist III". Such a terrifying performance and its all dialog based in a single room for just two scenes (and one dubbed over voice bit) alongside George C. Scott. And he came out as the best thing from it.
Keep in mind: this guy was nominated for an Oscar straight out the gate in his career
Skunked by an old man! I’ll never let that go!
I LOVE it when that happens. Like the lead Somali pirate in Captain Phillips for example. He had never acted before, if I remember right he was a taxi driver who went to a casting call for fun and went home with an Oscar. It's absolutely insane.
I'm kind of disappointed that I haven't realized how many films brad is in and how amazing he truly is
Oh sure, hence the reason I wanted to make this -- there's a lot to share.
To be honest I am not disappointed is that okay and I will not remember any of the movies he acted in except Chucky ( probably) but anyway no hate tho
Character acting is by far the best form of acting.
Yes, 1000x agree.
He's so damn talented. It's such a fuck up that the academy has overlooked so many of his performances. Brilliant man. He elevates every film he's in and is absolutely magnetic
He should have won in 1975.
@@amcaesar absolutely
the only reason we let him act, is that we’re afraid of what he’ll do if he doesn’t
Hah! I like that!
@@amcaesar Btw, you missed a film Brad Dourif was in, Death Machine (1994)a Sci-fi/Horror. He plays a deranged creepy hacker villain in that film.
@@michaelwautraets7126 I think I missed a SHITLOAD of worthy Dourif performances. I had to cap it at a manageable amount.
@@amcaesar Amen to that. He takes on so many roles big and small across multiple decades, I'd imagine you'd need a 5 episode docuseries to cover it all. 😆
@@laurajames458 I would watch that! This is my crowd of fellow fans here.
Brad is what people would called a "character actor". Character actors are actors who portray various types of acting roles. They are basically audience would refer to "hey it's that guy" while the more famous name-brand, leading actors are always known as their real names by audiences not the character they're playing while watching the movies. A-listers may bring in the money but character actors are what keeps the viewers focus to the movie.
That's a great way to describe his job.
@@amcaesar Thank you for the reply. Personally I prefer character actors over leading ones.
@@DarksaberForce That has kinda been a shadow-thesis of this essay series, without intending it to be. My attention seems to be focused on those kinds of performers, I guess.
I was guner say exactly what bill said and yeah i somtimes prefer the character actor to A lister
Character actors are the TRUE actors.
Brad's a total natural when it comes to playing the part of psychotic characters, including the voice of Chucky! His daughter Fiona is just as good.
This is a great family legacy.
and Fiona looks like her dad so much lol
He was mostly known just for “Chucky “ but also a great actor True Legend
He was WELL known *LONG* before "Child's Play". He was an Oscar-nominated legend already.
Always will be known as Chucky I love Brad Dourif
Brad Dourif, Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman, Clarence Williams III, Christian Bale, Michael Rooker, Denzel Washington, Brian Dennehy, Forest Whitaker, Michael Ironside, Tony Todd, Leo Dicaprio, Ray Liotta, just a few of some of my favorite character actors. When they lock in, they can be very intense and multi-layered. And your right, it's all about the eyes.
You are speaking pure sense, I love that roster.
💯
@@ivanrenard3153ot always. I mean it's been a while but roles like "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" helped break him out of that supporting role. "Django" was another film he took a step back from being the lead and killed it as a crazy good support. Sure there are other great actors that aren't in that list. For example J.K. Simmons, Oliver Platt, Danny Trejo, hell even Morgan Freeman who very often was the support that held a film together.
Remove Leo and sub in Michael Wincott.
OH HELL YES! I love Brad Dourif!
Oh man! You are luckier than me!
I need to meet him
Brad Dourif is to me, the most incredible actor in history of acting I have ever seen!
I'm in love with him😭 he's so underrated he deserves more attention than he gets
Hopefully we're all here to rectify that!
Brad Dourif has all the attention from me I love him more than anything else in the world
@@orlandoprude3341 same he's amazing and such a great actor I love him so much ❤️
same broooo💔💔💔
I'm jumping on this bandwagon 😭
I think he's a phenomenal actor. Always had. I first really noticed his talent in David Lynchs Dune and his terrific performance in Exorcist 3.
That's among my favorites, for sure.
He single-handedly saved Exorcist III, tbh. That movie was AWFUL outside of Patient X. Even George C Scott, who is usually brilliant and one of my dad's favorite actors, wasn't great in that one, it felt like he phoned it in HARD. But Dourif? Literal art for a low-budget straight-to-video horror sequel after one of the WORST sequels in film history.
@@Usedw0tm8 Exorcist III didn't go straight to video I saw it in the theater but it definitely didn't do well financially. Watch the directors cut with restored footage of him. Its a much improved film. ruclips.net/video/Spm-_1BiTA0/видео.htmlsi=XxMrWfFMQxKD0u3x
His role as Billy on Cuckoo's nest will always be one of my all time favorite characters he has ever portrayed ❤️
My dad is about Brad's age, and he's seen all kinds of movies and he loves character actors, and as a kid when we saw LOTR he without hesitation said "That's Brad Dourif".
Wow, my dad as well!
Brad Dourif also played a character named " Savvaedro" in the point & Click game...Myst 3 Exile...he brought a whole world of awesome aura with him in that game.
Among the inexplicably unrecognized realm of instantly recognizable character actors, Dourif stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Gary Oldman, PSH, and a trio of Christophers: Guest, Meloni, and yes, even the late great Lee himself.
He shall ride forever, shiny and chrome! He is witnessed! HE IS AWAITED IN VALHALLA!!!
I think that is an earned place on that list.
I love Brad's performance in a video game he was actually in called Myst 3. He does an excellent job with his character and it leans in to a lot of vulnerability like he does with a lot of his character acting in movies
We can safely say he never shanked a role, no matter where he was acting or who it was for.
saavedro!
@@0megadwarf Oh, I didn't know that's what the costume was all about!
2 years later but I think he played as piero in dishonored
His emotional acting is simply the best
Thousands of miles of depth.
Out of all the things I love about Dourif's craft is his voice. When he explodes with rage, you can feel the weight of that emotion. It's like gravity. It pulls you in and your attention is solely focused on his performance. Gemini is my all-time favorite of his roles.
That monologue is a showstopper, especially against George C. Scott.
Well said. With a single tear rolling down his eye. That was such a great scene it has stuck with me since I've watched it. Like when DDL has his monologue about fear when speaking to Leonardo DiCaprio in Gangs of New York. Just gripping from the first words. Also very underrated Exorcist movie. People think just because there is hardly any gore it's not a good film. I beg to differ
Bill, this is fantastic. We love it. Dourif always makes a film better. Always.
Thanks! Yes, he does elevate a middling product, and makes a good thing great.
One of the most underrated actors of our time. He has always been amazing
I'm glad that the amount of people who've seen this and commenting feel that way. I've been feeling like we don't celebrate our more obscure heroes enough these days.
Best actor alive in my opinion
I would love to see an Honorary Oscar, to make up for 1976.
Better than Denzel, Sam Jackson?! Josh brolin is very underrated actor
That scene where billy bibbit gets dragged away yelling punctures my heart, it's totally unsettling and unforgettable. He steals the show I'm that film. Truly great acting
It’s brutal, where he goes.
Good to see some brad dourif fans
I've stirred up a lot of enthusiasm from the fans, it's been great to see.
His performance in Exorcist (Legion) would have freaked Chucky!
Today is Brad Dourif Birthday. March 18th 2021. Happy Birthday Brad🥳
Me and Brad Dourif rocks my birthday march 19
Mad respect for this talented individual. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to see him to transform into a character on set. Must be magical. I have a crush on him and I’m only 25 :)
I met him once and got a little tongue-tied, because I was trying not to fanboy out on him.
Dude he was SO cute when he was younger! Billy Bibbitt was adorable! And the personality Dourif infused into such a complex character is absolutely beautiful.
Why doesn’t this have more views? What a fantastic upload. Love this actor!
Thank you kindly! I understand that there's a steep buy-in for pop egghead media content on RUclips, especially at this length.
I love his role as Billy Bibbit in One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest❤❤❤His performance is astounding 😊👏👏👏
I cant agree more, he is uniquely gifted. His performance in the Exorcist scared the crap out of me.
It's a frickin' showstopper!
Such a great film!!
The deliver on the lines how he goes from raging anger straight back to calm and sweet toned in the blink of an eye was beautiful. Exorcist 3 was his most frightening and chilling performance
Our greatest actor working today - Brad's incredible.
Agreed!
Came to this video only knowing this actor from the Child's Play movies... my mind is completely blown to see how well this man can act and how many terrific movies I need to see now!
Some of these are easier to find than others -- but I would suggest you start with "Wise Blood" from 1979.
This is brilliant. Very well done. I saw Brad for the first time in his X-Files episode about 20 years ago and I was instantly mesmerized and have been rather smitten ever since. He had a great turn in an episode of 'Millennium' as well (another of Chris Carter's shows). I've seen him in many things since, but I'll always have a particular fondness for his Jack Dante in 'Death Machine'- as silly and over-the-top as that movie may be, he is a bizarre delight. :)
There were so many things I couldn't get my hands on, this video could have went on for 24 hours if I was able to go as crazy as I would've liked. I never even heard of "Death Machine," the span of his career is amazing.
Beyond the Sea from S1 great episode
i just watched the x files and death machine clips, very interesting. i feel like i had some interest way back when i first saw him in lotr. currently, nu dune made me want to take a look at old dune and he certainly caught my eye for a second time.
him and his daughter are so talented
Can't wait to see more Fiona in the years to come.
Glad you included his role from Exorcist. He had a really great scene in Graveyard Shift as well, though obviously you can’t include every role of his. Fantastic video
My good friend is an evangelist for Graveyard Shift!
Wow Bill you’ve really outdone yourself here. You’ve taken such care with this piece & have me shocked at not only how many roles he’s played where I didn’t rally catch on it was him but his unparalleled gift for acting. Like you say his voice, eyes, mouth, mannerisms, he’s using them all for his craft. Your exploration into his work has yielded caverns of gold. Well done indeed.
Thanks for watching as carefully as you did -- I love showing the nuance and detail off in a new light!
By the juice of Safu this is stellar work! It's a great exploration of his work. More than just a tribute, it's a terrific close reading of his acting.
Thank you, that is exactly what I am going for here! I hope I can repeat this approach in future installments.
Most underrated actor ever
I'm glad people watch this and agree!
@@amcaesar He will forever be ingrain in history as Chucky but he deserves so much more credit. His role in Exorcist 3 is some of the best acting I ever seen.
@@dechefmane3526 Jeez, I love that fucking role. He steals the movie from George C. Scott.
His single-episode role as Brother Edward in Babylon 5 still makes me bawl my eyes out to this day. It’s criminal how unsung he is-he’s one of the most memorable, effective, and boldly talented actors that ever lived BY FAR.
We're a clutch of true-believer fans who celebrate him in his time, and I hope he feels the love come his way.
Yes! I love how you’re in no rush to cut away from the brilliant performances.
So long as the sponsor dollars are in no danger of being lost, I will take my time with the edit.
Absolutely awesome work, Bill, making us appreciate an often underrated actor.
We must write the hagiographies ourselves!
I love this mans work
You are among friends!
Happy B-day Brad Dourif. UR amazing legend, man. Me and my younger brother, we love all movie of Chucky. Child's Play 1, 2, 3, Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky, & Cult of Chucky is awesome. We even seen them, when its Halloween. Not bad. Halloween 1 & 2 is great horror movie... we seen the classic one's. Never seen them in the 70s or 80s. And the last horror movie, is Alien Resurrection. I seen 6 Alien movies. Watching alien movies is super awesome, "Predator" is better, my favorite alien... harecore, man. Also: I can't wait to see the new alien movie, "Alien Romulus." Maybe its part 3. I could be right! Anyway, ur great Brad. Full support. Totally. May the Peace be with u Brad Dourif. From Harlingen Texas. March 18, 1950

Thank you for making such a wonderfull video about such a wonderfully gifted actor. I'm a huge fan of Dourif's work and you hit every detail about him perfectly. I have a theory that his zodiac sign has a lot to do with what he does, he's a Pisces and pisceans are naturally gifted artistically. They are a very imaginative bunch with an otherworldly quality to them, many of them work in the film industry, sometimes in front or behind the camera. Brad has a gift and sadly he's been type-cast as a villain for most of his career, but characters like Doc Cochran on DEADWOOD and Johnny Reynolds from Chaindance stand out and show what he can do when he play's a good guy. :D
Thanks for the high praise! I didn't have a lot of cause to use "Bad Lieutenant," but I think that movie shows off some of those same good characteristics you speak of.
That Exorcist 3 clip near the end is a particular favorite of mine; Dourif's erratic changes in tone and pitch are unsettling. The more popular bits are when he's deep voiced and yelling or growling, (with what sounds like some kind of slight reverb or distortion?) but I love that rant and how his voice lightens and becomes more airy when he describes killing Dyer -- something he does in such detail just to piss Kinderman off. Absolutely mesmerizing performance.
Exactly how I would describe it.
Loved him as Lon Suder on Voyager, and as Grima. Amazing actor.
One of my favorites, and for sure underrated. I love when he is in bad movies, but does 100% anyway. Kind of like Malcolm McDowell, Udo Kier, Tim Curry.
You're speaking magic into my ear, those are some of my favorite actors.
I saw him onstage with Amanda Plummer in Williams' Two Character Play about 10 years ago. It was probably the most memorable play I've ever seen, and I've seen quite a few.
My friend saw it as well, I feel like I missed something my not seeing it. It's been great watching Plummer add to the legacy to Star Trek lately.
He's performance on deadwood is sublime
That was such a great fusion of Easy Riders Hollywood with the Prestige HBO thing.
Refreshing to find intelligent, informed film commentary on YT. Love Dourif's strange performance in Dune.
That was the genesis of Dourif as a topic, for certain.
Wonderful video!
Doc Cochran ranting at God is one of the greatest scenes in the greatest show of all time.
It was one of the prime movers which urged me to do this dive on Dourif... that, and DUNE of course.
He’s a great casting for chucky because as you said he’s very expressive with all his roles when he makes it his own. Like Hamill with animated characters like joker. Very underrated actor. Reminds me of Andy Serkis
I love that they were both in LOTR.
Brad Dourif is one of my favorite actors of all time. I love his craft when he does anger, laughing and voice so uniquely especially the opening scene in Child’s Play (1988) where prior to transferring his soul in the doll, he exacts his revenge to Detective Mike Norris and his accomplice Eddie for shooting and leaving him behind. “You hear this, You SOB! I’m going to get you for it! I’m going to get you and then I’m going to get Eddie, no matter what!”
And I believed him!
Believe love his rage anger he put his all into it
@@orlandoprude3341 It's true, I always buy him no matter who he plays.
@@amcaesar yes sir

Absolutely spot on video! Finally someone who knows about the genius of Brad Dourif.
Enjoyed every minute of it, Brad is one of my favorite actors.
I so appreciate you saying so! This was made by a fan for other fans!
I started playing Myst III recently and was blown away to see Dourif playing the antagonist. His face and voice are able to squeeze so much emotion out of every line. Really enjoyed this tribute, and I think you've hit the nail on the head with so many of his performances being based on some underlying pain (this is certainly true of his Myst III character).
I really missed something back in the CD-ROM days by not digging into Myst III.
Loved him ever since Exorcist 3. Cast stand out and his performance has stayed in my head ever since.
I can't tell you how much I've watched that sick monologue over and over again. It never loses power.
I love his acting.
There are few pleasures more delicious.
Great video; he's such an inspiration to me as an aspiring actress...and to think I first only knew him as Chucky lol but, speaking of which, you mentioned at the beginning of the video how Brad purposely choses these types of dark roles, serial killers and such, while yes I believe he sought out roles like Ragtime, Istanbul, or Wise Blood, but after he became Charles Lee Ray/Chucky, the poor actor was obviously type casted as the villain at least 80% of the time, but that's just Hollywood for ya. If he had won the Oscar for Cuckoo's Nest, we probably wouldn't have a Chucky, at least not as him. Don't get me wrong though, I'm glad he became Chucky and I love his dark roles and you can tell he loves it and puts his all into it, but I sure he loves it more when he's not playing a bad guy for once. He has so many ranges, yet such an obscure fanbase. Love him!
I didn't even cover his return to the stage in Manhattan doing Tennessee Williams' "Two-Character Play" with Amanda Plummer a few years back. People say it was great!

I'm very glad you found your way to it. I think many of us are big fans ready to celebrate his long and brilliant career.
its funny - I went and looked up Dune (1984) for the list of actors, specifically to find Brad Dourif. Funnily enough you mention how enraptured you were by his performance as Piter. I can report in 2021 it still has the same effect. Love the fidgeting and motions with his hands he does.
“My plan… THE plan.”
My most favorite actor of all time! Highly underrated and sadly underused!
I know I always enjoy seeing him!
Brad has always been my absolute favorite actor. I remember seeing his scene in exorcist 3 when I was younger than 10 maybe. (The jump scare with the bone cutter thingy scared the bajesus outta me 😂)BUT I was so enthralled by his voice and the way he speaks. His intensity. Just been obsessed since.
I was lucky enough to meet him once, at a small screening his daughter was showing something at. I tried to choose my praise and gratitude carefully.
@@amcaesar I don't think I'd be able to 😅 id look crazy
Nice little representation of the man's career. Bravo.
Thank you, he's influenced my relationship with movies so much I felt I'd owed it to him.
Excellent essay of a great great actor... May I suggest what I would call one of his best later performances in the (unfairly by my own opinion) much maligned Rob Zombie's Halloween 2, he brings a real heart to his take on Sheriff Brackett and his moment when he discovers the body of daughter is genuinely heartbreaking...
Interesting, I had yet to be recommended that film on the basis of Dourif's performance!
@@amcaesar, I'd say no matter your opinion on the rest of the film Dourif's performance WORKS!
He’s criminally underrated. I loved him as Lon Suder, the murderous Betazoid.
That was one of his big roles I didn't get to watch for this.
Excellent video. Brad is one of my favorite actors. I have gobs of respect for him.
Incredibly credible!
His portrayal of the antagonist in Myst 3 is so good. That era was characterized by campy acting in video games. Brads performance is the only thing I've seen that's actually good. He plays someone who was imprisoned on an island of sorts, and believed his family and entire culture was wiped out. He dreams of revenge and plots an elaborate plan. Slowly he comes to discover that his family is actually still alive. Brad was able to convey all this emotion
That sounds awesome to me!
Never knew his name. Always liked every piece of work he was in.
A good position for an actor to be in, if your goal is to always be working.
In my books…He’s absolutely NUMBER ONE!
He’s incredible!!!

I heard about it through the comments here -- it sounds intriguing, but probably hard to find!
Rhode scholar as well as an amazing actor and a great father and a nice guy.
I became infatuated with his performances after that delivery of "THE plan" line in Lynch's Dune. I can't remember right now if DeVries was an actual Mentat or a Ghola Mentat who had been tailor made for the Harkkonens by the Tleixau, but either way it was incredible. I like Denis Villenueve as a director but for me he stripped a lot of what made Dune unique as a story, the lack of Mentat time being among them.
We've been discussing how Villeneuve took from the Mentat school to give to the Bene Gesserit, and I get there's only so much time in a two part feature... but still.
His scene in Exorcist III is incredible. He deserves so much more recognition than he receives.
Absolutely correct!
He is mesmerizing as the gemini killer and wormtongue. Ughshgsgs such a good actor
You're among friends here!
I'm glad they didn't concentrate on the Childsplay franchise for this. Oddly enough he now gets to perform alongside his daughter in the new Childsplay show. Where she acts as the young version of his character.
He's all but retired now, aside from the Child's Play series. He just wants to play with Fiona.
I just watched The Holdovers and I say Dominic Sessa brought to mind Brad Dourif.
I can see that, a different type of conventional handsomeness but a young intensity.
AN EFFING KING. he is such an absolute monster on screen, nobody can hold a candle when he's around. he's got the whole unhinged thing down pat, but he brings humanity to it. again and again and again. no matter what piece of crap he got cast for. i have SEEN some really bad crap he was involved with, and he gave 100%. anything with brad needs to be reset with him as top billing.
I wish he could have kept up the heat in his 60s, he's been retired in Woodstock NY for quite a while now.
I remember I saw him for the fist time when I was a kid in lord of the rings as grima wormtongue. I thought he was simply great, one of the best performances of the entire trilogy
I often forget that he is in certain movies,
I consider this to be somewhat of a compliment to his acting skills,
I forget that it's Brad, the highly successful artist, i am immersed in his charactors
He's always good, even if the movies aren't.
his performance in the exorsict 3 is just perfect i get chills every time i watch this movie bc of him
One of the reasons I decided to make this video!
Brad in Exorcist III is insanely overlooked.
I'm glad I'm among friends who keep that torch lit.
im very proud of him and his daughter fiona, they are just perfection to me.
He made a great contribution to the next generation.
Imagine this man taught you an acting class 🤩
I would give anything for that DeLorean time machine, to zip back to 1986 Columbia University.
I would love that
Yes, I was fortunate to be one of his students at Columbia University circa 1985-1986. He was a superb teacher who was always a model for being 100% present, attentive, and focused. Watching him critique a scene, and, on more than one occasion, slip into character to show someone an idea...some of my best memories of grad film school. Probably The Person that I learned the most from in a program loaded with "names".
Today is Brad Dourif Birthday.
March 18th 2022.
Happy Birthday, Brad! 🥳
I'm glad people have been posting that!
Omg omg omg... he's like the male version of Jodie foster. I was trying to figure out what his face reminds me of.
Well I guess Jodie Foster pre-dates his career by a few years, technically...
