- Ludwig van Beethoven - Fantasy for piano, choir, and orchestra, in C minor, Op. 80, Jan Lisiecki (piano), Choir of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic, Violetta Bielecka (conductor); Sinfonia Varsovia, Grzegorz Nowak (conductor), live at the 12th International Music Festival CHOPIN AND HIS EUROPE, 2016
As a musical feast, the legendary all-Beethoven concert at the Theater an der Wien on the night of 22 December 1808 was more the Austrian equivalent of a Roman banquet. For a start, there was four hours of music, most of it new or unfamiliar.
This musical marathon - a benefit concert for Beethoven - contained not only the premieres of his now iconic Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, but the first public performances in Vienna of the Piano Concerto No.4, excerpts from his Mass in C, and the concert aria Ah, perfido! And that wasn’t all. Beethoven, utilising the existing forces, including chorus, ran up a new piece, the Choral Fantasy, practically overnight.
Beethoven wrote the piece during the second half of December 1808 in an unusually short time by his standards. He commissioned a poet-whose identity is disputed-to write the words shortly before the performance to fit the already written parts. The large opposite number, 80, of Fantasy, shows that Beethoven rewrote Fantasy after the quasi-improvised premiere. Beethoven was notorious for interpreting scores before they were completed.
Perhaps the most arresting feature of Beethoven's Op. 80, aside from its fanciful construction, which in its free-variations style suggests Beethoven's legendary skills at keyboard improvisation, is its foreshadowing of the Ninth Symphony's "Ode to Joy" theme, whose entry here is unmistakable.
“Graceful, charming and sweet is the sound.
Of our life's harmonies,
and from a sense of beauty arise
Flowers which eternally bloom.
Peace and joy advance in perfect concord,
like the changing play of the waves.
All that was harsh and hostile,
has turned into sublime delight….. “
I think I just found my favorite interpretation! Absolutely beautiful! ❤
Very good video is very useful
I'm waiting for new concerts with this wonderful concert with Jan Lisiecki. It is the best from all interpreters and makes me
addicted.!!!
thanks for listening
I have reached the point where I need to listen to this at least once a day.
I have heard many performances of this work and none of them comes close to this in terms of joyful, effervescent musicality and interpretive brilliance!
I only recently discovered Jan Lisiecki’s recordings and I am devouring them as I find the time, and when I had finished hearing his Beethoven piano concertos, I thought to myself, “I sure hope that he’s done the Choral Fantasy.” I searched and I was not disappointed (I would like to find Yuja Wang doing it, but that must wait for now).
This is some of the most miraculous music-making I have ever heard in my life!
Many thanks! I am very happy that you are listening with delight to this wonderful piece of music in this interpretation... It brings me joy too. No matter how gloomy a day is, this music transforms it miraculously.
II absolutely agree with you. I feel the same way!😍
Thank you very much! You're right, we also need a little "Beethovenian madness" to really enjoy these Holidays, at least when we listen to his music, and to smile when we remember fondly that he, Beethoven, was really great in his "madness".
Thank you again, I wish you a lot of health, a lot of serenity and the fulfillment of all your wishes!
Бетховена можно слушать бесконечно спасибо
Thank you too!
Thank you very much! I agree with you, his music fills our souls because it continues "to float" in the universe.
Remarkable performance. Very unique interpretation. Very different from the thousands I have heard since I was 4 years old.
I've never heard this done remotely as well as this before. Absolutely wonderful.
Thanks for listening. I'm glad you liked it.
This performance is more like a piano concerto which the piano take on a very unique role !
For me is the Choral Fantasy always a joy to listen. In this version to! Is makes this Christmas with stormy weather here
worth the effort. As always thank you very much and have a save New years eve.
Thanks Pieter D., I'm so glad you like Choral Fantasy! I also listen to it with pleasure at this time of year. It brings me joy and hope that the virus will disappear with the end of this year, which has been so strange for all of us.... Happy New Year, my friend!
What a fabulous recording, Sibarit! Many thanks for posting it. Beethoven's brilliance and sense of humanity shine through. And what scope for exuberance for from the pianist !
Yes, the sense of humanity and the hope we will all overcome these problems that the pandemic still creates for us. Thank you very much!
Hello my dear friend.
Merry Christmas.
This apotheosis and beautiful piece of art , that i love very much, is a great tribute for the genius of Bonn in his 250 years of birth
My best wishes and gratitude for you.
I hope you are fine .
Sincerely yours,
Fernando.
Merry Christmas to you and your whole family!
I posted this choral fantasy just because Beethoven first sang it about 2-3 days before Christmas, 212 years ago. I think it was a wonderful atmosphere in that concert hall!
Thank you, my friend!
👌
Unjustly underrated job .... and yes people who know it mostly think of it as sort of preparation of Hymn to the Joy ... only few people appreciate it as such, as a piece of music that exists because of itself ....
I'm not the one who exults for every rare piece of Beethoven just because of it be written by Beethoven. Some of his forgotten jobs are not really worth an effort to resurrect them and energy should be diverted to resurrect many masterworks of obscure composers .... but this you know better than me .... 😄😄😄 ... as it's your mission
But op 80 is a beautiful piece of music and it's good to disseminate its knowledge
Happy Stephan Day (for catholics), happy συναξις υπεραγιας θεοτοκου μαριας (for Orthodox people), happy Kwanzaa (for Afro-American community) and happy Boxing day (for all the others)
Thank you very much, Pietro Landri! I felt like in a concert hall listening to this music and the background noises ... and it made me hope that in a few months I will be able to return to such a hall ...
And yes, I will say together with you: Beautiful Holidays, whatever they are called, for the whole world!
@@sibarit101 thanks, yes, I look forward to attending concert halls events 🙏🙏🙏
